This constitutional mandate has given rise to an annual presidential speech known, appropri- ately enough, as the State of the Union Address. The State of the Union is partly a ritual, partly a listing of presidential programs and priorities, and partly a bit of politi- cal theatre. This year's speech -- to be delivered tonight at 9pm -- comes at a time of growing worldwide crisis, with Eu- rope still reeling from terrorist attacks, world markets on edge from recent economic developments, and growing tensions across the Middle East and Africa. Tonight's speech has one more important element -- it comes amidst the earliest signs of the 2016 presidential race, which seemed to begin all of a sudden at the turn of the new year. It is thus an opportunity for President Obama to lay out what might become next year's Democratic platform and campaign strategy. Join us tonight at 9:00pm for Pizza and Politics as we watch, discuss, and dissect the State of the Union. Professors Jeff Fi- ne and Vladimir Matic of the Political Science Department will join us in the Holmes basement for what promises to be a lively and interesting conversation. See you there! The Constitution of the United States requires that the Presi-

dent "shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union." This constitutional mandate has given rise to an annual presidential speech known, appropri-ately enough, as the State of the Union Address.

The State of the Union is partly a ritual, partly a listing of

presidential programs and priorities, and partly a bit of politi-cal theatre. This year's speech -- to be delivered tonight at 9pm -- comes at a time of growing worldwide crisis, with Eu-rope still reeling from terrorist attacks, world markets on edge from recent economic developments, and growing tensions across the Middle East and Africa.

Tonight's speech has one more important element -- it comes amidst the earliest signs of the 2016 presidential race, which seemed to begin all of a sudden at the turn of the new year. It is thus an opportunity for President Obama to lay out what might become next year's Democratic platform and campaign strategy.

The Astronaut Scholarship was created in 1984 “to aid the United States in retaining world leadership

in science and technology by providing scholarships to the very best and brightest college students pursuing these degrees.” Universities must be invited to participate in the Astronaut Scholarship program; Clemson has been par-ticipating since 2010. The scholarship covers expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board in the amount of $10,000 annually, and opens doors of opportunity for the recipients in admissions to top graduate programs and success in obtaining NSF grants for graduate study and research.

Clemson must nominate two students for the Astronaut Scholarship. If you are majoring in Mathematics, the Sci-ences, and Engineering, are a current sophomore or junior who will graduate no sooner than May 2016 but no later than May 2017, have a GPA of 3.8 or above, have significant research experience, and are a U.S. citizen, you should consider applying.

Application packages consist of: a one-page statement by the nominee discussing his/her personal interests, activ-ities, and career goals; a resume; and 2 letters of recommendation from Clemson faculty members. Application packages may be emailed or delivered to me. The application deadline is January 23, 2015 and a faculty committee will select Clemson’s nominees in early February.

Please note: Astronaut Scholarships are not awarded for pre-medical studies, so clinical research is not considered in the research selection criteria. However, biomedical research is included.

You may visit their website here http://astronautscholarship.org/. If you have any questions about the Astronaut Scholarship or any major fellowship program, please do not hesitate to contact me at 656-2428 or [email protected].
