The 41st meeting of the 19th term of
the Rotary Club of Point West was brought to order among the
picturesque gardens, lawns and pool area of the Sac-ramento Inn. It
was the first club meeting for this humble reporter as a PWR
mem-ber (so please excuse all typos, miscon-ceptions and
misinformation). The rotary theme of “Lend a Hand” was somehow
transformed into the Point West Rotary theme of “Have Fun, Even If
(and espe-cially if) It May be Slightly Illegal.” There are enough
lawyers and judges in the club to address all problems the mem-bers
may get themselves into.
Guest Steve Shiflet led the club in the pledge of allegiance and
Guy Heilman whipped the crowd into a frenzy with the singing of
“This Land is your Land, this Land is my land….” Candy Dahl related
the observance by her grandfather (a for-mer Corning Rotary
President) of the pro-ceedings of the men and women founding the
United Nations in San Francisco in 1945; which was evidently, in
part, the brain child of numerous ‘45 Rotarians then

in attendance.
Editor in Chief Randy Bechtel is recuperating nicely (subject to
suffering through a procedure involving the entry of a medical
device into his body through his groin.) Randy should have Prez
Drewz News newsletter ink on his hands in a few weeks. Additional
volunteers are needed to cover the club reporting until Randy’s
return. Please call (488-4420) or e-mail ([email protected])
Doug Weill if you can help out.
AUSSIES INVADE PWR
The meeting featured the members hearing tales about the trip of
a lifetime to Australia by the District GSE team led by member
Roger Andriesse. Team mem-bers Alesia Roger, James Ortega and Jim
Sigl provided insight into the eating habits of Roger Andriesse and
the team’s viola-tions of the no-fly zone in what sounded like a
wonderful trip down under (literally, based on the very graphic
account of what a body looks like when it is being cremated
provided by team member Alesia----chucky peanut butter and the
sound of a wood chipper will never seem the same). Dick Garner, the
team leader from Dis-trict 9180 out of Melbourne, Australia
in-troduced the visiting Australian GSE team. Accompanied by the
invisible slide show, the very witty Aussie GSE Team of Dick
Garner, Libby Christie, Glenn Taylor, Kirstin Coote and Simon Torok
(aka the juggler) provided some of their thoughts and observations
about Northern California (e.g. that we are all ignorant about the
sig-nificance of the star on the California flag, that our lawns
are very green, that tattooed

PWR’s Newest Members: John, “the juice”, di Giusto; Sue, “I’m at
the gym”, Redding; and Mike, “no ‘s”, Stephen. Not pictured is
Richard Gallagher from the Red Lion. John is guest writing this
issue of Prez Drewz Newz as Randy Bechtel recovers from his heart
attack. Sue is doing residential real estate, “Redding and
Associates” at Keller Williams. Mike is in office equipment sales

butts in San Francisco are in vogue and that Americans do not
fit the Hollywood stereotype.)
Roger strongly encourages mem-bers to consider becoming a GSE
Team Leader for the upcoming trip to Japan in September. Interviews
occur next week. Roger claims that the trip to Australia was the
best Rotary experience he has ever had (i.e. they have more fun in
Australia than the club members do here?!)
NEWS IN BRIEF:
District Conference. The most important aspects of the report
about the District Conference seemed to involve: (1) Presi-dent
Drew providing shelter for homeless member Maria O’Neil (who
designed the GSE brochure for our District Team); (2) in an
apparently completely unrelated event, the discovery by Drew of a
thong in this bed the morning after---- at least it appeared to
this reporter to be a thong (this was later confirmed by Todd
Murray-- evidently being his brand of
thong). (Tom Knox and other club lawyers—am I covered by the
looser libel standard afforded the real press here???) More to come
in the Star In-quirer; and (3) the Club captured third place at the
District Conference in the vocational services category and
gar-nered a first place award in the interna-tional service
category. Congratulations PWR.
Stacy Schuman Departure. Member Stacy Schuman showed up with new
son Nathan and husband Mike in tow. Stacy is moving to beautiful
Antioch and therefore will be resigning as a member of the Point
West Rotary—the club bid her a warm adieu.
Golf Tournament. Bob Porter re-minded everyone about the
upcoming club golf tournament on June 4 at Tur-key Creek. Get your
four together for play and do not miss out on remaining sponsorship
opportunities (as the fund-raisers refer to them.) Please
