R E G O L E D ’ A M P E Z Z OThe Regole d’Ampezzo are Mountain Fa-mily Communities whose origin can be traced back to the first settlers of the valley with their need for a collective management and use of forests and pastures. The hardships of living in a mountain environment favoured the col-lective and undivided use of the territory.Regolieri, the family heads descending from the original inhabitants of the Ampezzo valley, manage the collective heritage in accordance with the Laudi, the ancient rules. The properties of the common heritage are inalienable and indivisible. The Regole currently manage about 16,000 ha of forests, with tree cutting and wood selling activities and natural sylviculture of the forests. A few herdsman’s huts are still used for pasturing activities, so that they help preserving their original function. While the management of pastures was once a life necessity, today it is mainly per-formed to preserve the environmental and tourist resources. The Italian State acknowledges the legal status of the Regole through specific laws especially made in order to preserve its peculia-rity. Since 1990 the Regole have been entrusted with the management of the Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites

“in consideration of the specificity of the ancient forms of environmental ma-nagement, which have preserved and protected the Ampezzo natural heritage for centuries”. The Regole see as their scope the conservation and the promo-tion of the language, the culture and the traditions of the Ampezzo valley and own three museums.

The Natural Parkof the Ampezzo Dolomites

It encompasses an area of 11,500 hecta-res in the heart of the Western Dolomites on the ancient and jointly owned lands of the Regole d’Ampezzo, which lie entirely in the Municipality of Cortina. The pro-tected area takes the shape of a wedge and borders with the Upper Adige Park

of Fanes, Senes, and Braies to the North. Dwellings are not found on the whole area. The protected area includes the mountain groups of Tofana, Fanes, Col Bechei, Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo and Cristallo, separated by the Travenanzes, Fanes, upper Boite, and Felizon valleys, respectively. All the valleys, narrow and deeply embanked, are set towards the common confluence, whe-

re the main entrance to the Park is located, while higher up they open out into vast pasturelands. The highest peaks soar over 3,200 metres of altitude; the Tofane and Cristallo are characterised by high rocky walls, which get as low as the forests of the sub-alpine level; the massifs of Fanes and Croda Rossa have lower vertical drops, spaced by vast karst plateaux and high

altitude grasslands. The symbol of the Park is the Sempervivum dolomiticum, en-demic species which is found only in the Dolomites. The peat bogs of Foses lakes are a biotope of community importance.

The Modern Art Museum“Mario Rimoldi”

The museum hosts over 800 works by the most important artists of the 20th Century. The Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities has recognized the cultural interest of the collection which spans over a period of fifty years and is noted as one of the most significant collections of the 20th century Italian art for the presence of masterpieces by painters like Savinio, Garbari, Depero, Guttuso de Pisis, Sironi, De Chirico, Semeghini, Tomea, Tosi, Campigli.

The Ethographic Museum “Regole d’Ampezzo”

The Museum, housed in a renovated sawmill, focusses on the Regole d’Am-pezzo, the century old common heritage of the Cortina d’Ampezzo valley. The museum documents important cultural aspects of the Ampezzo community: the heritage of traditions and customs, the management of forests and pasture-lands, and the century-old relationship of Man with the natural environment. Visitors can also appreciate precious collections of traditional arts and crafts: tarsia works, silver filigree, wrought iron.

The Palaeontological Museum “Rinaldo ZardiniIts glass showcases contain millions of years of history of life on earth. A history that can be imagined by looking upon the thousands of different shapes of marine life, petrified by time, that testify to the geological and morpho-logical evolution of this area. This is one of the largest collections of fossils in existence today: shells of marine invertebrates, corals, sponges and the fossils of numerous animals collected throu-ghout the Dolomite area that surrounds Cortina. The collection has aroused the interest of experts from all over the world.
