Imam’s Corner: by Mufti Nayef Patel - In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

With the month of Shawwal beginning, people are still in fasting mode. Habits can form in thirty days, and due to Ramadaan, our bodies have been programmed to wake up for Sehri, not eat anything in between, and then await Iftar. Before we break this pattern and change to our pre-Ramadaan habit, let us try to observe the six optional (nafl) fasts of Ramadaan.

It’s another easy method of gaining rewards. Although these six fasts are not compulsory (fardh), it is strongly recommended for a Muslim to observe them – either consecutively (one after the other), or broken up over the entire month. Indeed, there are great virtues in doing so. Whoever fasts these six days will have recorded for him a reward as if he had fasted a whole year, as was reported in an authentic Hadith..

Sayyadina Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (Radiyallahu ‘Anhu) reported that our noble Prophet (Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam) said: “Whoever fasts Ramadhan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime.” (Muslim, Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nisa’i and Ibn Majah). Our noble Prophet (Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam) further explained the word “lifetime” in the above hadith when he said: “Whoever fasts for six days after (‘Eid) al-Fitr has completed the year (i.e whoever does a good deed (hasanah) will have ten hasanah like it).” According to another report: “Allah has made for each hasanah ten like it, so a month is like fasting ten months, and fasting six days completes the year.” (Sahih at-Targhib wa’t-Tarhib, 1/421).

Another benefits of fasting six days of Shawwal is that is makes up for any shortfall in a person’s obligatory Ramadhan fasts, because no one is free of shortcomings or sins that have a negative effect on his fasting.

On the Day of Resurrection, some of one’s optional (nafl) deeds will be taken to make up the shortcomings in his obligatory deeds, as our noble Prophet (Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam) said: “The first thing for which people will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection will be their salah (prayer). Our Lord, may He be glorified and exalted, will say to His angels – although He knows best – ‘Look at the salah of My slave, whether it is complete or incomplete.’ If it is perfect, it will be recorded as perfect, and if something is lacking, He will say, ‘Look and see whether My slave did any voluntary (nafil) prayers.’ If he did some voluntary prayers, [Allah] will say, Complete the obligatory actions of My slave from his voluntary actions.’ Then all his actions will be dealt with in a similar manner.” (Abu Dawud)

Question: When should a Muslim start fasting six days of Shawwal? Answer: One can start fasting from the second day of Shawwal, because it is haraam (forbidden) to fast on the day of ‘Eid. You can fast the six days at any time during Shawwal, although the best of good deeds are those which are done soonest. Unnecessarily delaying may cause a person difficulty in readjusting, and by saying “tomorrow, tomorrow,” the entire month may just fly pass you without even realizing.

Question: Can a person start fasting the six days of Shawwal when he still has days (Qadha) to make up from Ramadhan? Answer: If someone has missed some of the days of Ramadhan, he should fast them first, then fast the six days of Shawwal.

Question: Does one have to fast the six days of Shawwal every year if one did it on one year? Answer: Observing the six days of Shawwal after the day of ‘Eid is not obligatory on the person who does this once or more often, to continue doing it forever. He is not guilty of a sin if he skipped a year or a few in between. However, we should try to upkeep all our good deeds as Allah Ta’ala loves constancy in good deeds.

And Allah Ta’ala is our Source of strength. May Allah Ta’ala grant us all the ability of increasing in our good deeds and being steadfast on them – Ameen.

Sister’s Corner by Laiba Husain

Masjid Umar bin Khattab has recently commenced upon its second successful year of holding its Sisters’ Workout Class at the local masjid gym. The class caught momentum last summer and is now at full swing with up to twenty participants. Currently, the class is taught by a former YMCA trainer and incorporates both cardio and kickboxing whilst also focusing on physical therapy and muscular rehab for older sisters facing problems such as obesity, arthritis, and diabetes. In light of the fact that many sisters cannot go elsewhere to seek treatment for their health concerns, the class has propelled itself into a necessary means of rehabilitation.

One of the girls from the class echoes, “The MUBK Workout Class has pushed me to lead a healthier lifestyle and I am so grateful for the changes I’ve made in my life because of it.” Her statement embodies how most of the class feels. Not only has this class served as a beacon for physical and mental wellness at a time when it is truly needed, but perhaps more so than that- it has cultivated both a sense of prosperity and unity to our masjid through the activism of our community sisters.

Masjid Umar bin Khattab prides itself on bringing together our Muslim brothers and sisters in the hopes of instilling positive values on our younger generation through programs that integrate Islamic education and enjoyable activities for every age group. Recently the Sisters’ Workout Class has served as a foundational stepping stone towards bringing sisters to the masjid for programs including monthly masjid dinners, Mommy and Me programs, as well as fundraising fairs and Eid/Ramadan events that help raise money for our masjid while simultaneously encouraging active participation from the women in our community- which in turn sets an example for the coming generations of the importance surrounding the Masjid in our Islamic society.

We hope that with the dedicated support and activism of our community members, we can continue to offer beneficial programs such as the MUBK Sisters’ Workout Class in the near future.

Kid’s Corner - KIDS ARE US --- By Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Mehboob

As indicated in the important Hadeeth narrated by Kaab bin Ujrah (R.A), we are told that the Prophet Mohammad (SAW) told an Asahab to come close to the pulpit. The Asahab followed the orders. When the Prophet ascended the first step, he said “Ameen.”, when he ascended the second step, he said “Ameen”, when he ascended the third step, he said “Ameen.” The Asahab stated that we have never heard anything like this before.

Prophet Mohammad (SAW) told them when he was on the first step, Jibrail came to him and said…Despair upon him who found the blessed month of Ramadan and did not find forgiveness. Upon that, the Prophet Mohammad (SAW) said “Ameen.” When he was on the second step, Jibrail said…Despair upon him who does not say Durood upon hearing your (Prophet Mohammad) name. Again, the Prophet Mohammad (SAW) said “Ameen.” When he was on the third step, Jibrail said…Despair upon him whose parents obtain old age and (due to failure to serve them), he is unable to enter Jannah. Again, the Prophet Mohammad (SAW) said, “Ameen.”

We should take this valuable lesson and teach our children that the month of Ramadan is for forgiveness and prayers. During this month, we should do everything possible to fulfill our prayers and seek forgiveness. We should recite the name of Prophet Mohammad (SAW). Finally, if you are lucky to have living parents, respect, honor and love them and teach your children to do the same.

2017 Newsletter MUBK Sisters Janaza Committee

[Every soul shall have a taste of death.] [29:57] Alhamudu-lillah, Masjid Umar Bin Khattab’s (MUBK) vision is to provide a system for the Muslim communities by which they would be completely cared for at the time of a funeral for themselves or their loved ones. Primarily, to make sure no Muslim is left behind or buried without a proper Janazah according to the Quran and Sunnah, and more so, to provide this service without the expensive costs of funeral homes and cemeteries. When a Muslim dies, it is the responsibility of his family or other Muslims within the local community to wash him according to the Islamic rites of washing the deceased (Fard Kifaya). Usually at least three to five people will be involved with the actual ghusl (washing and shrouding). MUBK has a Sister’s Janazah committee for community support. The Sister have arranged multiple workshops for volunteers to understand the proceedings. Janazah kits are prepared, which are assembled packages of components to prepare the deceased for burial. A practice of the Salaf (pious predecessors of Islam) to keep ready their Shroud (Kafan) so that when death approaches, families will be prepared for the ghusl and burial. This is a reminder and admonition that we are going to die, and meet our Master and be held accountable for all of our deeds. A few weeks ago, MUBK conducted its first ghusal for our community. Alhumdo liilah we had volunteers and family members present to perform the Ghusal.

As a Muslim, we are taught respect towards the deceased. Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) taught us: do not hasten in a manner where you may be causing discomfort to the deceased. According to our theology, the deceased is able to hear and feel what’s happening. So they have moved on to another realm, but there’s still some sort of attachment. Sister Volunteers along with Family were able to perform the Ghusal and Shrouding in one hour keeping the prophetic teachings in mind. MUBK Sisters also organized a fund raising event for funeral funds. Loss of an individual is not just regarded as a loss to the family but to the whole Muslim community as well. For this reason, it is common for people who may not know an individual personally to attend his/her funeral. In fact Muslims are encouraged to attend any Muslim’s funeral due to the profound personal, social and spiritual significance of such an event. Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) said in an authentic Hadith: “Be in this world as a stranger or a traveler”. (Bukhari). A poet has said: “When you were born, you were crying while other people were very happy. So make sure that when you die, you will be very happy, while others cry.” May Allah accept all our sincere efforts to please Him. Ameen.
