Be careful if you fi nd yourself exposed to rodents in the wild. Health offi cials have confi rmed one death in west central Saskatchewan from complications resulting from hantavirus. The deceased person was an adult male in the Heartland Health Region. A second death in the same health re-gion is being investigated to determine if it was also caused by hantavirus. Offi cials do not believe the cases are connected. No other identifying de-tails are being released. Hantavirus infection is a rare but potentially fatal illness, typically asso-ciated with exposure to contaminated airborne particles from the droppings, urine, and saliva of infected rodents, like deer mice. Exposure can hap-pen when sweeping or vacuuming out buildings (such as cottages and sheds) that were infested by rodents. It can also be contracted by rodent bite, if the skin is broken. “Symptoms of hantavirus include fe-ver, muscle aches, cough, headaches, nausea, and vomiting,” Saskatch-ewan’s Chief Medical Health Offi cer Dr. Saqib Shahab details. “If a person develops a fever, coughing and short-ness of breath within one to six weeks of exposure to mouse-infested areas, they need to seek immediate medical attention.” In rare cases, symptoms may get worse and lead to Hantavirus Pulmo-nary Syndrome (HPS), a rare but often fatal illness. HPS can progress rapidly into serious lung complications.

Sask. children’s hospital to become reality The University of Saskatchewan Board of Governors has granted its ap-proval of the fi nal project location at Royal University Hospital, program and schedule for Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan. The decision was the last approval needed from the Board of Governors related to the hospital’s design and location. Ministry of Health approved the design in April 2013 and Meewasin

Valley Authority granted its approval in March 2013. “We are very pleased to be involved in the planning and believe the proj-ect fulfi lls the University of Saskatch-ewan’s guiding principles for develop-ment of this new hospital,” says Susan Milburn, chair of the university’s board of governors. “The University worked with the project team to create a unique identity for the new hospital while en-

suring it stays true to the university’s identity. We look forward to continu-ing this collaboration as the hospital becomes a reality.” The U of S approval allows Saska-toon Health Region to complete the blueprints and prepare for construc-tion of the new maternal and children’s hospital.

“The people who are most often exposed are farmers, grain handlers, cottagers, campers and home owners,” Ministry of Health Zoonotic Dis-eases Consultant Phil Curry says. “Everyone should take precautions when cleaning rodent-infested areas to prevent direct contact and inha-lation of air particles that may be contaminated.” Exposure to hantavi-rus can be reduced by: • Ventilating the build-ing by opening doors and windows for at least 30 minutes before cleaning, using wet mopping meth-ods and wearing gloves; • Blocking openings that might allow rodents to enter a building; • Storing human and animal food, water and garbage in containers with tightly-fi tted lids; • Keeping yards clean, and storing woodpiles above the ground and away from the home; • Being aware of animal droppings and nesting materials when cleaning a home or com-

munity and taking ap-propriate precautions to avoid exposure; and • Dampening areas contaminated with ro-dent droppings with bleach disinfectant and removing droppings with a damp mop or cloth to reduce the chance the vi-rus may become airborne. Avoid using dry cleaning methods such as dusting, sweeping, vacuuming or air-hosing. Including the most re-cent confi rmed case this year, there have been 24 cases of hantavirus and seven deaths reported in Saskatchewan since 1994. “Today marks the completion of a signifi cant milestone for the hospital and all those who have been working to make it a reality,” adds Jackie Mann, Saskatoon Health Region’s vice-president Integrated Health Services and Executive Sponsor of Children’s Hospital of Saskatch-ewan. “The team has worked hard to ensure the design meets the needs of Saskatchewan families and our care providers. At the same time, the team has created an exterior design that refl ects the colours and textures of our province, feels a little like home for our children and teenagers and respects the university campus.” Saskatoon Health Region expects to complete con-struction documents by the end of 2013 with construc-tion starting in spring of 2014. The hospital is scheduled to be built by end of 2016.

Ag. trade boosted Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart, along with agriculture industry representatives, lead a trade mission to the midwestern United States June 23-26, focused on advancing Saskatchewan grain and livestock interests in these markets. “This mission provides a valuable opportunity to pro-mote Saskatchewan as a leading exporter of agri-food products in the midwest, particularly in states such as Minnesota, Colorado and North Dakota,” Stewart says. “We also want to promote Saskatchewan as a place to invest in agriculture and value-added processing.” Highlights of the trip include meetings with key agri-businesses in order to promote and strengthen business relationships and attract investment. Stewart was to address more than 200 industry rep-resentatives from the midwest region under the theme – ‘NAFTA after 20’ and the increased benefi ts Canadi-an-U.S. trade integration has brought to the agricul-ture industry in both regions. Saskatchewan’s agricul-ture industry in particular has benefi tted from NAFTA, as agri-food exports from the province to the U.S. grew from $720 million in 1995 to $3.2 billion in 2012. The Saskatchewan Plan for Growth includes goals to increase exports of agriculture products from $10 billion in 2011 to $15 billion by 2020, and promote investment in the province’s value-added sector to take advantage of growing global demand for food, feed, fuel and fi bre. The Canada-U.S. trade relationship is especially strong in agriculture. In 2012, total two-way agricul-ture trade was almost $42 billion, and Canada is the top export market for 38 states. Trade between the two nations supports an estimated eight million American jobs. Saskatchewan exports more than half a billion dollars in agri-food products to the states of North Da-kota, Minnesota and Colorado.

Throw in bad weather like hail, add machinery problems and it’s time to find extra courage and wisdom. Problem is that no one has any courage or wisdom to spare when a person is all out of them. I told Ed this isn’t just a problem for farm-ers. Every one runs out of courage and wisdom, just like running out of milk and eggs. Living our lives can demand more courage and wisdom than we have stockpiled. A trip to the doctor can take more courage than we may have. When we are

facing tests and treat-ments, or physical ther-apy with no cure in sight, we can find our-selves without the cour-age and wisdom to keep going. Situations and problems come along where nothing we do makes a bit of differ-ence. It is like driving on a treacherously icy road and control of the car slips away from us. Then we spin around and are heading in the wrong lane at oncoming traffic. Our best-planned lives get out of control and leave us at the bottom, rather than at the top. We want to be first in line, but are last. Perhaps we do tend to snarl and storm our way

through life like a wol-verine. We attack our days with an attitude that we will do what needs to be done. We thoughtlessly do what we have done before, as if repetition is always wise. Change trips us up and most of us resist major changes unless we have no choice. It is hard to have humility and put our faith in God to remedy a problem that we are set on fixing ourselves. In the Bible, there was a woman who was sub-ject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead

of getting better, she grew worse. When she heard of Jesus, she was totally humbled at her own efforts to heal her bleeding. She was wise enough to believe that if Jesus could heal others, he could heal her. She thought, if I have the courage to come up behind him and touch his cloak, I’ll be healed. That is what she did and immediately her bleed-ing stopped and she was freed from her years of suffering.

In the wisdom of God, Jesus realized power to heal had gone out from him and stopped, turned around and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” The woman came and told him the truth - that she had touched him for healing. Jesus said, “Your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” It takes courage and wisdom to ask God for help after we have the humility to admit that we need help from Him.

PHILLIPSDorothy Hazel

1929-2013Dorothy passed away peacefully at Lethbridge Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday February 25, 2013. She was born in Elkhorn, Manitoba, April 11, 1929. Her schooling began in Yorkton at the Simpson Public School. At York-ton Collegiate Dorothy was active-ly involved in the school paper, year book, and was a publicist for the renown Hobby Fair. As a dili-gent student she was awarded a scholarship. Dorothy was honored to be chosen as Valedictorian for the Class of 1947. She attended the University of Saskatchewan graduating with Bachelor of Arts (English major) with Distinction in 1951. She took positions as a clerk, typist, receptionist and sec-retary at the Prairie Christian Training Centre in Ft. Qu'Appelle, Sask. Later Dorothy moved to Ha-waii, accepting a secretarial posi-tion with the Central Union Con-gregational Church in Honolulu. Soon after she relocated to Van-couver, to work for the United Church of Canada, B.C. Confer-ence Centre Office, as secretary to Executive Secretary and as secretarial support to Home Mis-sions. In 1971, to escape the smog she moved to Lethbridge, AB, where she was employed at the University of Lethbridge as Senior Academic Secretary in the Departments of English and Histo-ry until her retirement in 1984. A lover of music, Dorothy joined church choirs wherever she lived. In Lethbridge she was a member of the Southminster Church Choir. She was also a wordsmith, ama-teur poet, prolific letter writer, avid reader and current events follow-er. Dorothy clipped, enclosed and sent selected information, adding intelligent, thoughtful commentar-ies and observations on current world and local events. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Blake and Helen, her sister Olga and brother Howard. By Dorothy's request her ashes will be interred in her parent's lot in Yorkton, 2:30 p.m. on July 4, 2013 in the York-ton City CemeterySend condolences at www.mbfu-nerals.com.
