The last two weeks would have been agonising for Penrith coach Anthony Griffin and his players.

When you produce a perfor-mance as poor as what the Panthers did against Gold Coast in Round 11, the first thing you

want to do is get back out on the field and apply a bit of course correction.

The scoreboard showed a tight game against the Titans but the truth is it was a performance that is best forgotten. A team considered a premiership chance should not be dropping games like that mid-way through the season.

With that game behind them, the Panthers face one of the toughest road trips in the NRL – a visit to AAMI Park to take on the Melbourne Storm.

Penrith’s efforts against the Storm in recent years haven’t been too bad, but the fact remains that they are Penrith’s bogey team. The Panthers have won just 23.3 per cent of their all-time matches against Melbourne, their lowest winning percent-age against any team in the NRL.

That’s just seven wins from 30 matches, and while history does not always govern the future, there is no doubt that it is an added pressure on the Panthers this week.

Origin does play a role in this game with Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy not naming Queensland stars Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith in his side for Satur-day night’s contest. However, if they back-up OK from Wednesday night’s match, expect them to be late inclusions.

Panthers coach Anthony Griffin has named both Matt Moylan and Josh Mansour to back-up but has players on stand-by should all not go to plan.

The Panthers have shown this year that they can match it with the league’s best teams, coming from behind to beat the

Broncos, almost grabbing victory over the Sharks and taking the Cowboys to the last few minutes.

On paper, the Panthers have the team to take down the high flying Storm on Satur-day night. However, one thing that has let the Panthers down this season is their inability to control the game. On too many occasions they have allowed their opposi-tion to dictate the terms of the match and while they’ve still often been able to claim victory, it has resulted in far too many close games – and you’re simply not going to win all of them when you’re inviting your opponents to steal the points.

Melbourne love controlling games. They love getting down and dirty in the wrestle, they love making the most of a kick to touch and they command field position better than any side in the competition.

The Panthers need to find a way to take control away from the Storm, and a strong start will be the first step. If the Panthers are 12-0 down after 15 or 20 minutes, the game will be as good as gone.

With Peta Hiku and Dean Whare both out for the season, Griffin has named Waqa Blake and Isaah Yeo in the centres for the game, while Tyrone Peachey partners Jamie Soward in the halves.

The most talked about team news of the week was the demotion of hooker James Segeyaro, with Peter Wallace to now wear the number 9 jersey permanently.

» What an incredible fall from grace it’s been for Penrith hooker James Segeyaro. The 25-year-old has gone from win-ning the Dally M Hooker of the Year two years ago to being in reserve grade this weekend and without a club for 2017. Phil Gould confirmed on Wednesday that ‘Chicko’ wouldn’t be offered a new deal at Penrith next season, just a day after he was dumped from the first grade side by coach Anthony Griffin. I’m told that Segeyaro and Griffin have had several run-ins this year, dating all the way back to the pre-season. Last week’s photo controversy, which resulted in Segeyaro receiving a warning from the police, was the last straw for a frustrated Griffin.

» Will Smith hasn’t seen first grade since the return of Matt Moylan from injury, but he may get a chance when the Panthers skipper is unavailable for the game against Cronulla before Origin III. It might be Smith’s last chance to impress in first grade, as I’m told it’s unlikely he’ll get a new deal at the foot of the Moun-tains next season. Smith wouldn’t be a bad pick-up for a team in need of a utility player but his best chance of a deal with good cash may be in England.

» I’m hearing that negotiations between Panthers and Josh Mansour are going to be long and difficult. Mansour’s manage-ment wants a big figure for the 25-year-old, particularly now that he’s a State of Origin player. The Panthers aren’t willing to pay the price tag that has been sug-gested but are still very keen to re-sign the winger.

» There’s speculation the Panthers are speaking to former Eel Ken Sio, who is currently playing in England.

» The Panthers have launched a new membership initiative ahead of some big games at Pepper Stadium at the back end of the season. If you’re a current member and get five mates to sign up as members, you score a free 2016 Panthers jersey, an exclusive invitation to a BBQ with the team, plus your own copy of Men in Black signed by your favourite player. » Penrith looks certain to lose Tupou Sopoaga with the forward in negotia-tions to switch codes to rugby union next season. Sopoaga has been linked to the NSW Waratahs in what would be a return to the 15-a-side code after the 23-year-old played for the New Zealand Schoolboys as a youngster. Sopoaga, by the way, celebrates a birthday this weekend.

» Former Panther Trent Waterhouse sold his house in the local area last weekend. The agents in charge? None other than Trent’s brother Lee and former Panther Brad Drew, who both work at Property Central.

» The Panthers will soon officially con-firm Phil Gould’s new role with the club, which will mainly be focused on consul-tancy and recruitment. Gus is stepping back from his huge commitment at the Panthers, confident that Brian Fletcher and Corey Payne have what it takes to look after the club’s day-to-day opera-tions. On Twitter this week, Gould told a fan: “I’m slowing down very soon. Time for some long lunches!”

» The NRL is under growing pressure to address the impact State of Origin has on clubs. While all accept that it presents an

issue, the fact that the Broncos, Cow-boys and Bulldogs all lost last weekend shows what a huge shadow Origin casts on week-to-week club games. Personally, I don’t see any issue with stand-alone weekends for Origin.

» NSW VB Blues fans now have the op-portunity to support their team all year round as well as strengthening the Blues into the future, with NSW Rugby League offering a limited number of member-ships for the first time. Starting from just $4.95, passionate Blues supporters can become a Blatchys Loyal member; while young fans (aged 6-16) can become a Junior Blatchys Blue; and for those who don’t live in NSW or simply can’t

» The NRL looks set to introduce periods of extra time for finals matches and the Grand Final from this season. Two five minute halves would be played in the event of a draw, with golden point com-ing into force if the game is still level.

It was a bittersweet feeling for young Penrith star Bryce Cartwright on Wednesday night, who watched the State of Origin opener with fellow Panther and Blues discard Trent Merrin.

Bittersweet because Cartwright could’ve been at ANZ Stadium last

night, sitting with Blues officials, after he was chosen as a NSW Blues Development Player for Origin I.

Less than an hour after the 21-year-old’s name was read out at The Star casino function last week, Cartwright was forced to pull out of the unique honour almost immediately through injury.

Speaking with Extra Time on Tuesday afternoon, Cartwright revealed the

reasoning behind his quick withdrawal from the Blues squad.

“I was having a bit of trouble with my thumb, I hurt it against Gold Coast the day before, and I was having some trouble with my knee as well, so the doctor said I wouldn’t be able to train all week and there was pretty much no point going into camp if I couldn’t train,” he said.

“The main reason for me being selected was to train and getting used to what happens in a camp like that.”

The second-rower’s name had been tossed around all season as a guaranteed Origin bolter but after a mixed perfor-mance in Penrith’s loss to the Titans the day before the team announcement, coach Laurie Daley chose Manly’s Dylan Walker as the Blues’ spark off the bench.

Cartwright is still hopeful he’ll finally get to experience Blues camp for Origin II or III.

“That would be nice to go in there and experience it, so fingers crossed that happens,” he said.

“I didn’t even think I was going to be in the team to be honest, when it happened I was really pumped and excited but I sort of knew that I wouldn’t be going in with the way my thumb and knee was.

“It was an honour to be named in that

role and fingers crossed that I get to go back in sooner rather than later.”

With Penrith enjoying the bye last round, Cartwright’s minor niggles have now healed with the backrower saying he’s ready to rip into the Melbourne Storm this Saturday night.

“I’m feeling good now and the body’s feeling fresh and ready to go,” he said.

The debate about when and where State of Origin should be played raises its head every year and while every media expert, football administrator and NRL fan has an opinion about the topic it seems to be forgotten about fairly quickly once the Origin series is over.

The constant debate comes mainly from the coaches during this period and revolves mostly around the availability of their players and the impact it has on their clubs during the Origin series.

It certainly does have a negative effect on some clubs at this time of the year but unfortunately for the coaches and for the clubs while the game continues to earn millions of dollars in revenue off the back of the Origin series, nothing is likely to change.

Channel Nine also play a big role here as they strongly want the game on Wednesday nights, and they pay plenty of money for the rights. This would make stand-alone weekends almost

impossible under the current television rights agreement.

I understand the coaches’ point of view on this matter and if I was an NRL coach I would want my best players available for every match.

But while I am just a supporter I must admit I love the tradition of a Wednesday night State of Origin clash.

Penrith travel to Melbourne this week and in recent years this has been a very tough assignment.

In fact, the Panthers have struggled against the Storm ever since they en-tered the competition back in 1998.

While the Panthers will be eager to atone their last round loss to the under-rated Gold Coast Titans, the Storm will be hoping that their key players get through Origin unscathed and are able to back-up for the clash against the Pan-thers on Saturday night.

Until next week, go the Blues and the Panthers.
