If you’re planning on travelling Saskatch- ewan over the upcoming long weekend you might want to check the pro- vincial highway hotline before heading out. Although the spring melt is over, a number of Saskatchewan commu- nities are still dealing with flood-related issues due to the above normal runoff. The situation, says a recent report is- sued by the province, has been made worse by heavy rainfall in certain areas. The Water Secu- rity Agency (WSA) in col- laboration with various government ministries, agencies, Crown corpo- rations and stakeholder groups will be providing a weekly update on the areas of most concern until the flood-related threats have subsided. Over the past week- end, the Anglin Lake area received 125 mm of rain which pushed the lake to a new record lev- el of 515.97 m. This was due to the above normal spring runoff combined with the recent rainfall; WSA officials have been monitoring Anglin Lake and have been trying to balance the situation upstream and down- stream in order to miti- gate flooding as much as possible but some out-of-bank flooding and flooding of municipal in- frastructure like bridge crossings and roads is expected; The following munici- palities and First Na- tions that may be affect- ed are: • Little Red River Park (a park located five minutes north of Prince Albert) RM of Buckland; RM of Paddockwood; and Little Red River Re- serve. The water covering Highway 2 in the Rural Municipality of Prince Albert rose three inches due to the heavy rainfall in the area. There is also currently 28 inches of water on the highway that needs to be pumped off, down from 40 inches at its highest peak. Summer is in full force and that means being on the lookout for rare bird species spending their summers here! The endan-gered Burrowing Owl, Pip-ing Plover, and the threat-ened Prairie Loggerhead Shrike pairs are “incubat-ing their eggs that should be hatching over the next two weeks” says Rebecca Magnus, Habitat Steward-ship Coordinator. Burrowing Owls stand about nine inches tall, with mottled brown and white feathers, bushy white “eyebrows”, large yellow eyes, and long featherless legs. The Burrowing Owl can be observed around grasslands often fl ying low to the ground or perched on a fence post. Piping Plovers are small, thrush-sized shorebirds that can be diffi cult to spot because they blend in very well with their surround-
ings, with their backs the colour of dry sand. Piping Plovers have distinctive black markings: a single black neck band, a black band on the forehead, and a short black-tipped or-ange bill. Magnus explains “although a commonly ob-served behaviour for their cousin, the Killdeer, the plover will also display a broken wing action to de-ter predators away from its nest”. Loggerhead Shrikes are most recognizable by their black eye “mask” that ex-tends back from the black bill through and past their eyes. They have a grey back, white under parts, black wings, and white markings on the wings and tail that are clearly visible
in fl ight. A shrike is slight-ly smaller than a robin and emits a high-pitched “shriek” when alarmed. Nature Saskatchewan is asking residents of south-ern Saskatchewan to re-port sightings and also sightings of impalements on barbed wire or shrubs by calling toll-free at 1-800-667-4668. By report-ing a sighting to Nature Saskatchewan’s Stewards of Saskatchewan pro-grams, you are helping to monitor the species’ popu-lation, and providing valu-able information for the conservation of these en-dangered and threatened prairie birds. Information provided is never shared without permission.

Ed, my neighbor next door, doesn’t believe in being thankful for much. Ed says, “Best to keep a person’s mouth shut even when you’re thankful for something. Situations, crops, people and the opin-ions of politicians change faster than light travels from the sun. If I’m thank-ful for my crop today, it could be destroyed by hail tomorrow, so being thank-ful today accomplished nothing. There is no need to be saying thanks for endless things in this life.” The whole thankful thing got started because I said that I was sure thank-ful for all the blossoms on my fruit trees this year. Ed said disgustedly that I could probably gush on like a sap about a bunch of silly stuff for which I was thankful. I said, “Well, being thankful kind of multiplies itself. The great thing about fruit trees is getting fruit from them. There won’t be fruit with-
out blossoms. The blos-soms need bees so being thankful means saying thanks for blossoms and bees on the fruit trees.” Ed told me I talk in rhyme like I’m in kindergarten. Ed said that I probably say thanks or grace before every meal, to which I had to confess that I haven’t been nearly as good at it as my dad was. “That makes no sense to me, because there must have been some food at meals you were not thank-ful for on the table,” Ed stated. I told Ed that I didn’t like fried fish on Fridays, but it wasn’t the only food on the table. I
was thankful for the pota-toes and bread. Ed doesn’t give God much credit. The way Ed sees it, if God gets thanks for good weather, he should also get blame for bad weather. If God causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous, why thank him, since God doesn’t play favorites. Ed wants a God who will be good to him, but not to others - especially if Ed doesn’t like them. Long story short, Ed isn’t sure it is worth his bother thanking God for stuff. Ed wonders why he should thank God
if God won’t bless him extra for being thankful. Ed summed it up this way – if I had told God thanks for my neighbors I would have had to say except for the nut-case next door. He says thanks for blossoms that grow naturally on his fruit trees. I understand Ed’s way of thinking because we approach God with differ-ent perspectives. For me, my entire life and that of everyone else depends on God. I believe that God has made me and all crea-tures and He takes care of me and all others. I thank God, for He gives both physical and spiritual blessings. He makes the earth fruitful and blesses us with the ability to work for our daily bread and say thank you to Him for it. I asked Ed, “Do you resent it if someone says ‘thank you’ to you?” “Of course not,” he said.“Neither is God offended when I say thanks to Him,” I told Ed.

Before the weekend rain-fall, WSA was moving two additional and larger pumps to help with the situation because levels in McFarlene Creek subsided enough that it could handle more water. Getting these pumps into the area has been a challenge because of the weather but
they are expected to be in place this week. Motorists are advised to check the Highway Hotline before travelling in the re-gion. The Ministry of Govern-ment Relations has been in contact with communities, First Nations and agencies responsible for management of fl ooding.
The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre in Regina is actively monitoring the situation and will provide advice and assistance where needed. Emergency response teams and equipment are on alert and ready to respond if required. Residents who have experi-enced damage to their homes due to fl ooding should visit
www.gr.gov.sk.ca/PDAP or call 1-866-632-4033 for more information on the Provin-cial Disaster Assistance Pro-gram. PDAP staff have visited and provided information to the following communities af-fected by the heavy rains last weekend: • RMs of Buckland, Pad-dockwood and Fish Creek
and the City of Prince Albert. Staff have also visited the First Nations communities of Montreal Lake, James Smith Cree Nation and Little Red River Reserve. Currently 65 communities across Saskatchewan have received PDAP designation for spring fl ooding and eight other are in the process of designating.
