BRYCEIS RIGHT

with the Masked Panther

» Matt Moylan and Josh Mansour have retained their spots in the New South Wales team for State of Origin II at Sun-corp Stadium next week. Bryce Cart-wright (pictured), who withdrew from an extended Origin I squad due to injury, was named as a Development Player for Origin II, alongside Cronulla’s young superstar Jack Bird. Both Cartwright and Bird will share the Origin experience in the lead-up to next Wednesday night’s game, preparing them for likely Blues selection next year. The uncertainty over Wade Graham’s spot in the game also sparked suggestions Cartwright may get his debut earlier than expected.

» James Segeyaro’s future may be decided within the next week with the 2014 Dally M Hooker of the Year tipped to be in the sights of the Wests Tigers. Segeyaro only has until June 30 to switch clubs this season and with no future at the Panthers, his management is working on getting him a new deal elsewhere. The 25-year-old has had significant inter-est from England and in fact could have signed a deal to head overseas some weeks ago, but still believes he has plenty to offer in the NRL. It’s also no secret Segeyaro has a dream of playing State of Origin for Queensland down the track.

» Young gun Te Maire Martin was set to be out for the rest of the season after suf-fering a bad shoulder injury in April, but I’m hearing he could be back sooner than expected. In fact, there’s some specula-tion that Martin could be available for Penrith’s clash with the Wests Tigers on July 2.

» There is a little whisper around town that both major political parties have

looked at upgrades to Pepper Stadium as a possible election sweetener. Both the Liberals and the ALP have promised mon-ey to 1300Smiles Stadium in Townsville, so investing in sporting infrastructure during the campaign is certainly not out of the question. I wouldn’t be surprised if at least one of the parties made a stadium-related announcement in the local area in the coming weeks.

» Phil Gould offers better insight into the game than perhaps any other commenta-tor but it was still very strange having him in the broadcast box for Sunday’s game between Penrith and Manly on Channel Nine. It was about as awkward as a date with your sister.

» New Panthers CEO Corey Payne has wasted no time in getting to know the Penrith area, even asking fans on Twitter for their local cafe suggestions. Payne is extremely active on social media and is aiming to make a solid connection with fans, who are definitely warming to him. The Masked Panther did spot the main man at Krispy Kreme last week though – a potentially dangerous choice as a new regular haunt.

» It’s been fantastic to watch the emer-gence of young Nathan Cleary in recent weeks but even better has been the cameo appearances by his dad Ivan. The former Panthers coach was in Melbourne to see his teenage son make his first grade debut earlier this month, and was spotted on the Brookvale Oval hill last Sunday with friends and family. Next week the Panthers return home to play South Syd-ney at Pepper Stadium – I’m campaigning for Ivan to find a spot on ‘beer hill’ to watch the game.

» Jamie Soward’s future in the game may depend on what media deals he can se-cure for next year. If Soward was to head to England to finish his career, it may kill the momentum he has built within the media, where he wants to have a future. The 31-year-old makes regular appearanc-es on ‘The Back Page’ on Fox Sports and on Triple M’s commentary team. If he can secure strong deals within the media next year, I’m told he may consider hanging up the boots. In truth, Soward is in the box seat – he has a lucrative contract with Penrith for next year and whether he’s in reserve grade or not, can force the club to honour it.

» The NRL has announced that for the

first time in history, all NRL clubs have se-cured more than 10,000 members. At the commencement of round 14, NRL clubs had registered a combined total of close to 290,000 members, which is a 13 per cent increase on the same time in 2015. Despite all the talk of the A-League and AFL taking over rugby league in Sydney, the NRL not only remains strong but is growing.

» Monday night’s match between Cronul-la and the Cowboys attracted a huge audience on Fox Sports, even toppling ‘Game of Thrones’. 352,000 tuned in to watch the top of the table blockbuster. All games across the long weekend earned mega ratings for Fox.

Penrith delivered the greatest comeback of the season so far last Sunday evening when they fought back from 20 points down to shock the Manly Sea Eagles and keep their finals hopes alive.

In a game which many predicted Penrith to win rather comfort-ably, the decimated Sea Eagles surprised everyone last weekend at Brookie when they skipped away to a 24-4 lead early in the second half.

After looking lacklustre for the major-ity of the opening 50 minutes, Penrith managed to score the next five tries unanswered to pull off the NRL’s biggest comeback to date in 2016 and win 31-24.

Without the experience of Jamie Soward and James Segeyaro in the side, the second half resurgence was led by captain Matt Moylan and unsung hero Peter Wallace, who orchestrated a number of Penrith’s tries to get them back into the game.

NSW Development Player Bryce Cart-wright and 18-year-old newcomer Nathan Cleary also did some fine work in the back-end to help earn Penrith their sixth win of the season.

Speaking after the game, Panthers coach Anthony Griffin was thrilled at his side’s eagerness to stay in the contest and not give up.

“I thought if we got some ball we were in with a chance – they have a lot of belief, the boys,” he said.

“Manly scored some freakish tries on last plays but I thought if we got a bit of ball we were a rough chance.”

Griffin praised his young troops’ char-

acter under adversity and was obviously over the moon with the two points.

“We had a very young side out there too, under pressure, and it was as a bad as it gets – down 20 on a Sunday at Manly. I was very happy with the character they showed,” he said.

“That game could’ve spiralled way out of control when it got to 24-4 if we didn’t

show the character and belief that we did, so that’s the thing that pleased me most.”

Panthers fullback Matt Moylan admitted he always felt the game was winnable.

“There was a feeling out there that if we fixed up our errors we were making in the first half and we got a fair share of ball, that we’d be able to play good footy and get ourselves back in the game,” he said.

TIME FOR A BLACK OUT!

with Panthers CEO Corey Payne

It was certainly a memorable come-back victory over Manly last Sunday.

Anthony Griffin has helped instil resilience and self-belief in this talented group of players and in the end that was what allowed them to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. That said, we know we are a better team than what was put on display for the majority of that contest.

The players are determined to rectify that moving forward, starting with next week’s clash with South Sydney.

After a number of weeks on the road, we’re back home next Friday night against the Rabbitohs. It’s going to be a huge night at Pepper Stadium! The theme is ‘Black Out’ and with the play-ers wearing the black 2016 Home Jersey, we’re calling on all Panthers fans to join them by donning their black jerseys, polos, t-shirts and jackets. There will be 20 per cent off all black-coloured Panthers merchandise sold at the game, a pre-match show from AC/DC trib-

ute band Thunderstruck and a dance extravaganza featuring more than 500 local children at half-time.

Off the field, our new membership referral program has seen dozens of Panthers fans become members and existing members rewarded with free jerseys and invites to a team BBQ.

If you’re not a member, you’re missing out.

A $30 Starter Membership will get you a ticket to the game against Souths, a members card, lanyard and a $30 merchandise voucher. There is no better time to get on board, so give our mem-bership team a call on 1300 PANTHERS.

Finally it’s great to see our Panthers Josh Mansour and Matt Moylan back in the NSW Origin camp, and joined this time by Bryce Cartwright as a Develop-ment Player.

The experience they will each gain in that environment is invaluable as they continue to grow and improve as footy players and as young men.

PAYNE’S POINT

with Brad Drew

My phone was going mad with mes-sages from my old Manly-loving mate Cameron Faico during the first half of the match between the Panthers and Sea Eagles on Sunday and, I must admit, I almost turned the television off after watching Penrith’s first half performance (but my only alternative was to watch the AFL so I decided to stick it out and I am so glad I did).

Within 10 minutes of the second half my phone went silent, which enabled me to enjoy the performance of young Nathan Cleary, who was fantastic and displayed a level of maturity beyond his years.

Bryce Cartwright again showed his class and must consider himself extremely un-lucky not to be named in the NSW 17. Le-lani Latu was superb while Josh Mansour again put in a powerhouse performance.

I also must admit I was a little surprised when I heard the news that Jamie Soward was not selected for the clash against Manly, and I thought the Panthers may struggle without his kicking game.

In my opinion I think Soward has been very solid for the Panthers this season but, having said that, I must also com-mend Anthony Griffin on making the tough decision to dump him.

It is a mentality that needs to be instilled throughout the entire club filtering all the way down to the junior level.

The Blues will travel to Brisbane for Origin II and will face a tough task against the Queenslanders who will have the ad-vantage of a hostile home crowd behind them. Nothing but a win will be good enough for Laurie Daley and the NSW team with the series on the line.

FITTLER WENT ON TO BE A

A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK

FLASHBACK

These days Brad Fittler is known best for his work on television, and probably next best for his time at the Sydney Roosters as both a player and coach.

But out west, we know where the Brad ‘Freddy’ Fittler story truly began, and where his

heart really lies. It was in the mid-1980’s when Penrith ensured that a 14-year-old Fittler would later debut with the club.

Coach Tim Sheens did the hard yards to sign Fittler for five years on a scholarship, knowing that by 19 the talented youngster would have worked his way through the grades and be playing top flight football. What happened from then would be the admin-istration of the day’s issues to sort out.

Fittler would eventually make his debut for the Panthers in 1989, while still attend-ing high school at McCarthy Senior High School.

As soon as he stepped foot on the big stage, it was certain that Fittler would be a star. His fancy footwork and raw ability on the football field

was there for all to see.His debut came late in the 1989 season.

The 17-year-old made his entrance to first grade at Orana Park in Campbelltown, with Penrith already having the match in their keeping by the time he came off the bench. The Panthers won 37-0 that day, and Fittler set up two tries.

Proving just how much belief

the club had that Fittler would emerge a superstar, coach Ron Willey took the extraordinary step of playing him in the place of Chris Mortimer for a semi-final against Balmain at the Sydney Football Stadium.

But nobody knew it was coming – the Panthers had filed a team by the deadline

on match-day that included Fittler on the bench and Mortimer at five-eighth. When the Panthers ran out, Mortimer was nowhere to be seen.

The Panthers were later fined by the NSWRL for changing their team prior to

t h e

dead-line.

It has still never been

confirmed, but some say that the decision by Penrith to

part ways with Ron Willey at the end of the 1989 season – despite re-signing him during the year for 1990 – was partly about the decision he made that day in relation to playing Fittler in the starting side. They say he lost the respect of some of the play-ers, who had been making noise at Board level.

Fittler would go on to play 119 games for the Panthers, including the 1991 Grand Final.

While at Penrith, he represented at the highest level with both New South

Wales and Australia and by the time he left, he was one of the

highest paid players in the game.

Penrith’s decision to join the Super League

competition led to Fittler’s ultimate decision to leave the Panthers in 1995.

He signed with Eastern Suburbs, and went on to play more than 200 games for the club.Brad Fittler is

without doubt a rugby league legend – perhaps

one of the greatest play-ers to ever strap on a boot.

And it all started right here in Penrith.

The record books will show that Nathan Cleary made his first grade debut against the Melbourne Storm in Round 13 of the 2016 NRL competition.

But it’ll be Penrith’s following game, against the Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval last weekend, that most will remember.

And it’s a much better story, anyway, given Brookie is where his father, Ivan, played some of his first top grade matches back in the early 1990s.

Ivan had a stellar career at the Sea Eagles, Bears, Roosters and Warriors before turn-ing his hand to coaching, but it’s a new Cleary that everyone is talking about.

18-year-old Nathan was sensational in the second half against the Sea Eagles last Sunday, and even bagged his first try in the top grade.

Ivan was watching on from the famous Brookvale Oval hill.

For Nathan, being involved in his first top grade win was another sensational memory in what has unexpectedly emerged as his breakout season.

As for that first try, he’ll have to catch it on video.

“I actually can’t really member it, I’m just stoked to get the win and getting the try was a bonus,” he told Panthers TV.

In his first two games Cleary has expe-rienced the highs and the lows of NRL football, losing to the Storm but beating the Sea Eagles.

“The important thing is that we always had faith,” he said.

“Even at half-time we just backed each other and it showed in that second half. It’s an amazing feeling.”

Cleary is hoping he retains his spot in the top grade so he can play his first match at Pepper Stadium.

“I haven’t played at home yet so I’d love to be playing out there in front of a big crowd,” he said.

New South Wales Rugby League has announced the partnership renewal of the Official Ball of Holden State of Origin, Steeden, until the end of 2018.

Steeden will remain the Official and Exclusive

NSWRL Chief Executive Officer David Trodden was delighted with the new partnership extension.

“It’s great to be associated with a rugby league brand such as successful and well-known as Steeden for another lengthy period,” Mr Trodden said.

“NSWRL has had a long-lasting rela-tionship with Steeden and we are thrilled

to have them on board once again.”Steeden Commercial Manager, Jon

Clarke, was also happy with the news. “We are thrilled to have extended our

long term partnership with NSWRL. The fact that the NSWRL have chosen to reappoint Steeden as their exclusive football supplier is a testament to the performance of the footballs and we look forward to seeing players of all grades continuing to use Steedens,” he said.

“In a first we have released a range of exclusive NSWRL branded footballs which the clubs can purchase through their local retailers or our website www.steeden.com.au.”

» Intrust Super Premiership NSW: Panthers reserve grade captain Will Smith has outshone his higher profile teammates in Jamie Soward and James Segeyaro to deliver Penrith their third straight win last Saturday afternoon against the Manly Sea Eagles. The part-time first grader, who played in the centres at Pepper Stadium last weekend, scored a hat-trick of tries in the 24-6 victory. In what can only be described as one of the worst games of the year so far, Pen-rith just managed to defeat the lowly Sea Eagles after a late flurry of tries in the final 10 minutes.A decent crowd turned out to support Soward and Segeyaro in their ISP debuts but overall Penrith were awful for most of the match, with error after error resulting in a very close contest. The game was locked up at 6-6 at half-time and it stayed that way until the 71st minute when Smith bagged his second try of the afternoon. Five minutes later Smith crossed again before five-eighth Zach Dockar-Clay wrapped up proceedings with a try of his own in the final minute. With winger Josh Hall given the day off from kicking duties, Jamie Soward kicked four from four.Penrith will once again return to Pepper Stadium this Saturday afternoon to take on the Newcastle Knights.Panthers coach Steve Georgallis has named the same line-up to take on the Knights with the inclusion of Corey Waddell and Oliver Clark (18th man).

» Holden Cup: Penrith’s unstoppable NYC side have notched up their 11th straight win following a 60-6 thrashing of the bottom-placed Manly Sea Eagles.Young guns Sean O’Sullivan and Dean Blore made their NYC debuts in the em-phatic win while prop Oliver Clark and hooker Reed Izzard returned from their respective injuries.Surprisingly the Sea Eagles opened the scoring after five minutes with a close range try, but that’s where the points ended for the home side and the after-noon turned ugly. Try scorers for the Panthers included: Braidon Burns (3), Ratu Tuisese (2), Kaide Ellis (2), Daniel Brown (2), Oliver Clark and Liam Martin. The Panthers will enjoy a well earned bye this weekend.

» Ron Massey Cup: After last weekend’s Queen’s Birthday holiday, St Marys will finally return to action this Saturday against Mounties in Round 15 of the Ron Massey Cup competition. It’s been a while since St Marys last played with their last scheduled game against Blacktown Workers called off due to the recent Sydney storms.St Marys coach Brad Drew has named a strong side for this weekend’s clash with Alan Eisenhuth at fullback, Tom Eisenhuth and Geoff Daniela in the cen-tres, and Jake Butfield and Adrian Davis in the halves. Workhorse Nathan Smith will captain the side at lock.St Marys take on Mounties at Aubrey Keech Reserve this Saturday at 3pm.
