PENR ITH PANTHERS VS GOLD COAST T I TANS

KICKOFF: SUNDAY 3PM | REFEREES: JASON ROBINSON & GAVIN MORRIS | VIDEO REFEREES: STEVE CHIDDY & JARED MAXWELL | TV: CHANNEL NINE 4PM | RADIO: TRIPLE M 3PM

IT MAY ONLY BE round four, but this Sunday’s clash between the Panthers and Titans at Penrith Stadium could very well

be a defi ning one for the home side. With just one win from their opening

three matches, the Panthers enter an awful fortnight on the road after this weekend’s game, facing the Cowboys in Townsville and the Knights at Hunter Stadium. Should the side lose on Sunday and come back from those two road trips winless, the statistic “one from six” does not sound sweet at all.

The big question mark hanging over Penrith this weekend is how much they take from the second half performance against Souths last weekend, in which thanks to a vocal home crowd they almost produced the upset of the season so far via a remarkable comeback.

Fans can only hope that the 35 minutes of brilliant football inspires such performances for the rest of the season, or at least such spirit and belief.

BELIEVING IN THEMSELVESWhilst last weekend’s game against Souths showed just how far Penrith still has to go to be a competitive force in the NRL, it also showed how far they have come under coach Ivan Cleary.

Much of what Cleary has tried to instil at Penrith is a “believe in yourself” attitude. There is no doubt that during the fi ghtback last Sunday, Penrith suddenly believed. The power, dominance and force of Souths simply didn’t matter, and the result was

falling just painstakingly short of taking the lead into the fi nal minutes of the game.

“Like everybody, we’re just trying to get consistency,” Cleary said post-match.

As well as consistency in terms of the basics of the game, Cleary is also hoping to get consistency in the players’ belief.

Despite criticism, Luke Walsh must believe he can match it with any halfback in the game. Dean Whare must believe that nobody has a chance of getting past him, and that he

can chase anyone down – no matter how fast or strong they may be.

The list goes on.Self-belief plays a big part in attitude, and

in the way teams perform as a unit. We saw last Sunday what self-belief can do, but Penrith must dig much deeper to fi nd it for 80 minutes and not just when adversity rears its head.

Find the self belief, fi nd the confi dence, and you fi nd victories. It is the type of attitude that builds successful teams.

PROBLEMS ON THE RIGHTPenrith’s biggest problem on the park at the moment is the right side defence, with David Simmons and Wes Naiqama providing little fi ght. Both Simmons and Naiqama will continue to score points and hence will stay out of the spotlight as far as their week-to-week performances are concerned, but coach Cleary would surely be worried about teams targeting the right side.

Naiqama missed four tackles against the

Rabbitohs, and Simmons missed two, but the ease in which Souths scored on that edge of the fi eld put up the red danger lights for future weeks and invited future oppositions to try the same tactic. Surely the Titans will fi nd their way down that right side a few times this weekend.

Fans were this week left confused as to why Simmons and Naiqama stayed in the side, but Nathan Smith found himself back to an extended bench to make way for Cameron Ciraldo.

THE FINAL WORDMake no mistake, this is a crucial game

of footy for the Panthers and a potentially season-defi ning 80 minutes.

Whilst Souths were always going to be tough, the Titans provide a slightly easier opposition, and it’s a big test for Penrith’s attitude, ability and, as mentioned earlier, the self-belief of the players.

It’s far from make or break, but a loss could have big consequences.

Titanic struggle loomsPREVIEW BYTROY DODDS

NEW PENRITH PANTHERS FIVE-EIGHTH Tom Humble knows he’s got big boots to fi ll in the halves but

is confi dent his pairing with Luke Walsh will last the rest of the season.

Humble got the surprise call-up from Panthers coach Ivan Cleary last week after Lachlan Coote went down with a season-ending pectoral injury.

The former Tigers and Eels star played his

fi rst game in the number six jumper against the Rabbitohs on Sunday, making a name for himself with a spectacular chase and tackle on Rabbitohs superstar Greg Inglis.

Speaking with Extra Time before last Sunday’s loss to South Sydney, the 24-year-old said he was excited and somewhat surprised to get the opportunity to play fi rst grade so early on.

“It’s something I’m looking forward to

especially at a club like the Penrith Panthers, who have such a rich history,” he said.

“I defi nitely think I’m up to the task. It defi nitely makes it easier that Luke Walsh is a great organiser and we’ve got a good structure at the moment, and that gives me every opportunity to step straight into the role and take it on without too much diffi culty.”

With other halves prospects like Blake Austin and Isaac John eagerly waiting to swoop on Humble’s position should he fail, the Brisbane-born playmaker said Cleary hadn’t set any expectations for him as yet.

“There hasn’t been anything outlined like

you’ve got one or two games to perform, there’s been no limit or expectation put on when I’m to perform,” Humble said.

“But for me, my personal goal is to go out there, step straight into the position and take it on. I need to take on responsibility within the team and hopefully that will continue to improve throughout the year.”

After playing a number of positions including hooker and fullback at his former clubs, Humble said, for the fi rst time in his career, he trained the full pre-season in the halves whilst under the guidance of one of his favourite players growing up, Trent Barrett.

PR IDDO ’S PO INT W ITH LUKE PR IDD IS

2003 2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith PanthersNational Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

SO WE HAVE JUST two unbeaten sides this early in the competition with the Bunnies almost gifting the game back

to the Panthers on Sunday which would have made it one.

The shoulder charge has been banned and based on what we saw from Richie Faoso on the weekend, it’s probably a good thing.

Whether a clash of heads or not, as I haven’t seen it again to know, the fact that it was a blind side shot and possibly late wasn’t good. I am all for the game being tough, players are playing a contact sport after all, but when you start to read about the eff ects former players of NFL and NRL are having from concussions you have to believe that it is in the best interests of the players.

To the coaching merry-go-round now, and Shane Flanagan returned to offi cially take the reins for his fi rst game of the season and what a display from the Sharks.

I said in previous weeks that this whole episode had the makings to cement this side together and kick them on to greater things this season and from what we have seen in the opening rounds it has done just that.

There are a few coaches under pressure already, I would say none more than Matt Elliott (pictured) at the Warriors.

This club has high expectations not only from its owner but also a nation and must be questioning what is going on. In successful sides the coach is as one with his players and staff .

Yes sometimes hard decisions need to be made but if the coach is upfront and honest players usually can accept disappointing decisions.

When players are questioning the coach even before their appointment you would think there may be an issue.

Clearly watching their games this is the case but is Elliott good enough to turn things around?

To wrap it up this week, I just want to say how great it is to see Ben Barba named for the Bulldogs.

Regardless of how he plays, the Bulldogs v Rabbitohs game is shaping up as a big game that could possibly draw the crowds out of the Easter Show come Friday night.

IT’S ONLY BEEN FIVE months since exciting Panthers hooker James Segeyaro made the move from Townsville to Penrith but

his instant passion for his newfound home is uplifting and infectious.

While the 22-year-old has fi tted in perfectly on the fi eld, there’s no doubt he’s feeling pretty comfortable off it too, fast-becoming one of the much-loved characters around the Penrith area.

“I just love Penrith mate, I love the Penrith RSL especially, it’s outstanding,” Segeyaro told Extra Time.

“The Star Buff et is my favourite restaurant spot, it’s becoming a weekly thing for me. It’s probably both good and dangerous at the same time.”

Segeyaro said it isn’t just the ‘all-you-can-eat’ restaurants that tickle his fancy, he also loves a quiet meal with mates down by the beautiful Nepean River.

“Cootey and I go down there a fair bit. Same with my room-mate Adam Docker and Wes Naiqama, even though Wes is a bit of a pest,” he joked.

“I think what’s best about Penrith is everything is close by and the Panthers club across the road is just outstanding too. I’m really excited about this indoor sky diving centre (iFly Down Under) opening as well. I may have to hit up Uncle Gus for some free passes.”

Segeyaro is working hard to make a name for himself at Penrith in the long-term.

“There’s so much heritage that’s gone through the Panthers jumper, great players have played in that jumper and it’s exciting at the same time because I feel like I’m forging my own future and being a player for the fans,” he said.

IF YOU’RE A PANTHERS fan, you’ve got to love his optimism.

New Penrith second-rower and premiership winner, Sika Manu, believes the new-look Panthers, with the right attitude, can be as good as his former club, defending premiers the Melbourne Storm.

“There’s not much diff erence between the two clubs,” Manu told Extra Time.

“All the boys here are a good bunch of

blokes , everyone is really disciplined and everyone works hard, which is very similar to Melbourne.”

Despite Penrith not quite boasting “the big three” like the Storm, 26-year-old Manu still believes they have the make-up of a side that can contend for a title.

“We’ve got the right players here, it’s just about everyone doing their job on the fi eld,” he said.

“We train really well but we just need to transfer that onto the fi eld.

“We’ve got the right coaching staff as well. Most of our coaches have played and all know the game. We are not really far off .”

After coming from a Melbourne Storm side that only lost 12 games over the past two seasons, Manu thinks it won’t be too hard to handle a loss in Penrith colours, if the club does struggle during the season.

“We lose games but we come off the fi eld knowing we could have won them, so I think it’s just better execution in everything we do,” he said.

“Everyone’s got a good attitude and we

fi ght to the last whistle.”And it seems Manu is leading the way

already with that attitude on the paddock. His early form for the Panthers has been

nothing short of sensational, instilling all those devastating qualities that made him a superstar at the Storm.

With the 2013 Rugby League World Cup looming and the annual Test match against Australia just around the corner, the 14-time Kiwi international says he’d rather focus all his energy on Penrith fi rst and foremost.

“I haven’t really thought about playing for New Zealand, for me it’s just about playing consistent football for Penrith,” he said.

AFTER SIX YEARS WITH THE MELBOURNE STORM, SIKA MANU KNOWS ALL ABOUT WINNING. NOW, HE’S PART OF A NEW-LOOK PANTHERS TRYING TO DEVELOP A CULTURE SIMILAR TO HIS FORMER CLUB...

PANTHER RUMBL INGS W ITH THE MASKED PANTHER

ADDING FUEL TO THE speculative fi re over Todd Carney being a potential target of Penrith, his partner Lauryn

Eagle was spotted at Centrebet Stadium on Sunday, watching the clash between the Panthers and Rabbitohs. All of this while Todd was sweating it out for the Sharks over at “Insert name here” Stadium. Sadly, we’re told that Lauryn was in Penrith on duty with Centrebet, and not checking out the facilities to report back to Carney. However, she did fi nd the time to read The Masked Panther’s column in Extra Time (pictured) and rumour has it she’s taken a copy home for Todd to read. Great to have you as a fan, Loz.

One former NRL player to be surprisingly linked with the Panthers this week is Craig Wing. I’m hearing from a few sources that Wing, a former Rooster, is in the sights of the Panthers for the 2014 season. If the story is true, you do have to wonder why

the Panthers feel a 33-year-old who hasn’t played top fl ight rugby league since 2009 would be on Phil Gould’s hit list. That said, Wing was a tremendous talent and is still playing professional rugby union in the lucrative Japanese market.

The Panthers this week announced the signing of Manly forward Brent Kite for two seasons, starting in 2014.

Now I think Ivan Cleary is as safe as houses at Penrith for the rest of this year and probably next year too, but I can reveal that former Tigers coach Tim Sheens – a target of former Panthers CEO Mick Leary – was spotted in the Penrith area earlier this month. In fact, he was at Penrith’s newest restaurant, Hanks Seafood. My digging has come up with nothing thus far, but given they do a mighty seafood platter, it might all mean nothing in terms of football.

KEVIN KINGSTON’S RISE TO skipper at Penrith hasn’t been an easy one.

After all, he got the job mid-way through last season in the most controversial of circumstances, with Luke Lewis stripped of the captaincy during the Origin period by coach Ivan Cleary.

Lewis would ultimately leave the club and far from the huge publicity that surrounded his captaincy appointment a year earlier, Kingston was given the “c” next to his name with very little fuss during the pre-season.

The hooker has taken the role in his stride, leading the Panthers into 2013 knowing that at times, it’ll be a rough ride.

He’s also got his own issues to worry about, with James Segeyaro breathing down

his neck and fi ghting him for his beloved number nine jumper.

However, coach Cleary has managed to have both Kingston and Segeyaro on the fi eld at the same time during the 2013 season thus far, proving the team is big enough for two number nines.

Kingston and Segeyaro couldn’t be more diff erent.

Kingston, 29, is a quiet achiever, tackling his heart out and showing tremendous determination in defence.

Segeyaro, on the other hand, is so dynamite in attack that it’s impossible not to notice him on the fi eld.

Kingston continues to lead the side with passion, commitment and dedication.

Kev keeps his cool

THE FOOTY SHOW INS IDER

EXCLUSIVE EXCLUSIVE to to Extra TimeExtra Time, our secret insider drops all the goss and information from behind the scenes of one , our secret insider drops all the goss and information from behind the scenes of one of the most popular rugby league shows on television, Channel Nine’s ‘The Footy Show’of the most popular rugby league shows on television, Channel Nine’s ‘The Footy Show’

THIS WEEK THE INSIDER caught up with mercurial host Paul ‘Fatty’ Vautin to talk about leading

‘The Footy Show’ into its debut in a new timeslot at 8.30pm Thursdays on Channel Nine.

In the show’s 20th year ‘Fatty’ admits there’s no slowing down.

“I am powering. I feel as fresh as ever, it’s my favourite two hours of the week,” he said.

2013 started off with a bang; KISS performed live and Fatty fulfi lled his dream of introducing the legendary rockers.

“It’s one of the greatest things to happen on the show,” he said.

“KISS opening the 2013 season with their anthem ‘Rock and Roll All Night’ will defi nitely remain a highlight for years to come.”

In a fi rst for Channel Nine, ‘The Footy

Show’ will be coming to you LIVE at 8.30pm. But is it dangerous to put the boys to air earlier?

“Of course we’re not trying to put the channel off air,” Fatty joked.

“It will be exciting to have more kids and families watching. Hosts like Beau Ryan and Slats are doing wonders for our female audience, but there’s still room for ugly blokes like myself and Darryl. We have a great production crew that do a great job each week. At 8.30pm we’ll have a lot of fun stuff , with a strong rugby league background.

“The most important thing about our show is the great rapport we have with players and clubs of the NRL, that’s what we’re all about.”

In the show’s anniversary year we have been revisiting some of the greatest moments from the vault, and Fatty spoke about some his fondest

memories of the past 20 seasons. “I always loved working with Steve

Irwin; he was a great man. Whether it was myself and Sterlo impersonating Steve and his wife Terri, or the infamous snake pooing incident; those were great moments from the show and some of my favourites,” he said.

When asked about what the loyal fans from Sydney’s rugby league heartland can expect from ‘The Footy Show’ this year Fatty declared: “‘The Footy Show’ is the place to be. It is the place to catch a few laughs before a hard hitting round of footy. It’s also where you see the stars of our game in the fl esh.”

To see more of ‘The Fat’ tune into The Footy Show LIVE at 8.30pm on Channel Nine from next Thursday.
