Calling All Volunteers: Highland Day 2013This fall, New Hope Seventh-day Adventist Church will once again mingle with its neighbors during the annual Highland Day, a family festival here in Howard County. The Oct. 5 event takes place just a mile from the church, at the intersection of routes 216 and 108, and celebrates the Highland, Md., community. The festivities will include a parade and costume contest, among other attractions. There's also plenty of activity for kids (some of which we'll be providing!), who can enjoy games, face painting, a fishing hole and a visit from the fire department.

New Hope will be one of dozens of exhibitors participating in the day, joining local businesses, artists and community groups. We plan to return to this year's Highland Day with our Olympic-style contests, bounce houses, an information booth and live music.

Our involvement presents a unique opportunity to introduce the community to our church, letting people know we are in the neighborhood — and that they are welcome anytime. Help us make the day a success by volunteering for the event! We need helping hands for before, during and after the festival. Please consider participating in this effort to reach out to those in our own backyard.

The DetailsWhat: Highland DayWhen: Saturday, Oct. 5, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.Where: intersection of routes 216 and 108Why: to be an irresistible influence in our community, of course!

What We NeedYOU. Contact Laura Krause at [email protected] to find out how you can sign up to volunteer!

Weekly ChallengeEach time you feel worried, write it down. Look at the list and pray over it at the end of your day and at the beginning of each new day. Watch how God answers.

The Back Page follows the Bible lessons that children and youth are studying and serves to help kids and adults continue the spiritual discussion at home and establish patterns of a devotional life.

It was the first day of college classes. My new roommate and I were in our room, looking over the syllabus for the classes we had. We were excited and nervous at the same time. The amount of classwork we would have to do overwhelmed us. Yet we felt up to the challenge.

Later that night after we turned off the lights, my roommate became restless, tossing and turning in her bed. She suddenly sat up with a sigh and began to cry. She was anxious and worried. Her worries were many, ranging from fear of not having friends to concerns about a difficult class she would have to take in her junior year. She worried that a professor would not like her and that the library would not have a book she needed. She worried that college would not be the experience she anticipated and that we would not get along as roommates. She even worried about worrying. Needless to say, it was a challenging relationship and difficult semester.

Rick Warren, author of The Purpose-Driven Life, wrote: “Worry is playing God. It's assuming responsibility for something that God has said He will take care of.” In

Philippians 4:19, Paul reminds us, “You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need, his generosity exceeding even yours in the glory that pours from Jesus” (The Message). God knows all the details of our lives. He knows our worries even before we worry about them. He already has taken care of them! That’s how much God loves and cares for us.

“Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life” (Philippians 4:6-7).
