When Pastor Gary Patterson first appeared before New Hopeʼs congregation, he told the story of a family trip to the Atlanta symphony that was almost thwarted by a flat tire, until a benevolent AAA employee helped replace it with a spare.

It wasnʼt clear where the winding tale he shared that August morning was going. Then Patterson delivered the punch line: “This is spare tire time. We probably wonʼt be able to go as fast as we would at other times. We probably wonʼt be able to go as far. But weʼre going to get — together — from Point A to Point B.”

The metaphor has proven far from apt in describing all that Patterson has been to New Hope during his 10 months as interim senior pastor.

“It seems to me that spare tires of this quality are exceedingly rare,” said Timothy Atolagbe, former chair of the churchʼs executive committee. “Pastor Gary's tenure has been one of the most effective leadership transitions in my memory.”

Indeed, Patterson provided “a sense of stability” during a time of change in the church, said Ann Roda, New Hopeʼs pastor for families. “Pastor Gary is a calm, sure and steady presence who provided us with leadership born from a depth of experience and wisdom.”

New Hope is one of several congregations Patterson has temporarily helmed over the past several years; heʼs also worked in Beltsville, Md., Forest Lake, Fla., and Marietta, Ga.

Gratitude for his service over the past year extends beyond New Hope. Chesapeake Conference President Rick Remmers praised the strong preaching and leadership skills that he brought to the church for nearly a year.

“We appreciate very much the significant transitional role he has provided in meeting the needs of the congregation and preparing them for the next chapter of their ministry,” Remmers said.

Patterson said he and wife Rae would leave the church with fond memories — of people and of food shared Saturday afternoons. “We shall miss the wonderful spirit of fellowship that is unique in this congregation,” he said. “New Hope is a young congregation, which we clearly are not. But you have made us feel young and at least acted like there is no age separation at all.”

We may have taken a long and winding road, but New Hope has finally reached Point B — together, as promised — with the help of a one-of-a-kind spare tire to steady us along the way.

Many thanks, Pastor Patterson, for such a smooth ride.

New Hope bids a fond — and appreciative — farewell to Pastor Gary Patterson

Perhaps not surprising for a man who has spent his “retirement” serving as an interim pastor a dozen times and in different states, Pastor Patterson wonʼt be putting his feet up anytime soon. He is next bound for Takoma Park Seventh-day Adventist Church (not far for a visit!).

Weekly ChallengeHave you thought about how God has created you the way you are — unique, different from everyone else? This means God has a specific and unique purpose and mission for your life. Do you know what that purpose is? Do you know your mission?

The Back Page follows the Bible lessons that children and youth are studying and serves to help kids and adults continue the spiritual discussion at home and establish patterns of a devotional life.

The mountain bike (MTB) was created for unpaved roads. Typical terrain for the bike includes rocks, roots, sand and loose gravel. A steep grade, both incline and decline, make mountain bike riding particularly exhilarating. The MTB differs from a typical bike in various ways — the most obvious being the presence of suspension on the frame, a larger and more durable wheel rim and thick, knobby tires.

A few years ago, a group of us decided to do a four-day camping road trip on our bikes. We followed an off-road trail along the C&O Canal. Because were taking a modified route, a small portion of the trip was to be on a paved road before catching the trail again some miles down the Potomac River. The trip was hard and the trail quite bumpy. If it were not for the bikes’ strong suspension, we would have been much sorer than we were. I looked forward to a break from the rough trail.

When we finally got on the paved road, I was relieved. My body could rest on the smooth surface. However, less than one hour, I found myself really tired and fatigued. Riding on the paved road took more effort because our bicycles were created specifically for bumpier ground. The large, wide, knobby tires produced resistance on the paved road. We had to use more effort, energy and muscle, and our speed decreased

considerably. It was uncomfortable and unnatural. The MTB was not created for riding on smooth roads. As someone once said, remarking on the difference between the MTB and a road bike: “They were created for two totally different missions, though they are from the same family.”

We are all created uniquely and given different gifts for different purposes. Our God-given gifts were given to us for a special God-ordained, God-chosen mission. That is where we are to serve and minister. However, when we function in an environment that is opposite of what we were created for, things are not as smooth, it takes more energy and more effort; it becomes uncomfortable and unnatural.

We were created for a specific purpose to fulfill a particular mission. Will you be what you were created for or would you rather live a life of resistance?

For the FamilySet aside a time when family members can use their God-given gifts in fun ways. You could bake a cake from scratch, write a poem, sing a song or think of other creative ways based on what seems natural to that individual.
