FAMILY MINISTRIES www.newhopelovesfamilies.com!

In today’s lesson, children will learn that God helps us in our trouble. The story of Jehoshaphat is found in 2 Chronicles 20:1-30, “Jehoshaphat Trusts God for Victory.” Today’s lesson concludes the fourth-quarter Bible study curriculum on the Old Testament. Next month, the lessons shift to the New Testament, as children learn of Jesus’ birth, life and ministry.

Kingdom Kids Sabbath School celebrates Fifth Sabbath TODAY! All children's Sabbath School classes will combine into one family group for a special morning of fun, 9-10:30 a.m. in the upstairs hallway. Fifth Sabbath gives our teachers a well-deserved break and is a wonderful opportunity for families to spend time together doing crafts, games and other activities. Don't miss it!

Where are you from originally? I grew up in Fountain Valley, Calif., and attended Orangewood Academy in Garden Grove, Calif., for 12 years.

Tell us about yourself. When did your pastoral career begin, and where else have you worked? I started as the assistant pastor at the Chico Seventh-day Adventist Church (2002-2004), then served as associate/interim pastor at the Escondido Seventh-day Adventist Church (2004-2010) before coming to PUC Church.

Tell us about your family. I’ve been married to Heidi since January 2003 — almost 11 years. We have two sons: Luke (8) and Aidan (5).

What do you enjoy about being a pastor? Pastoring for me has been sitting on the front row watching God work in people's lives. Can't believe I get paid to do this.

What's your favorite verse in scripture? Why? Psalm 27:4 [“One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.”]

I like to think that if God ever asked me if there was one thing that He could give me, I would have David's response in that verse: to be in His presence all the days of my life.

You're coming from quite far to join our church. What will you miss most from the West Coast and PUC Church?

The people, especially PUC students. The investment that we've made into them is the safest investment that I

can think of. These guys will go all over the world (maybe we can talk a few of them into landing

near D.C.) and make an impact for the kingdom. We will watch them with expectancy. And, of course, if they read this, they have a place to stay if they ever visit D.C. They're family now.

Giugni's sandwiches are a close second.!What are you most looking forward to in

joining New Hope next year? Looking forward to meeting all of you! We've been

collecting incredible, lifelong friends at every stop in our journey.

What's the first thing you hope to do when you officially start here? Learn everyone's name. I'm really bad at names. Really bad.

!The Back Page follows the Bible lessons that children and youth are studying and serves to help kids and adults continue the spiritual discussion at home and establish patterns of a devotional life.

Immediately after the Boston Red Sox won the World Series, I received a text message from a friend who is an ardent Boston fan. His message, in capital letters, simply stated, “WE WON!!” On Twitter, other Red Sox fans voiced their jubilation by writing, “We’re #1” and “We did it.” The following day, most of the major news organizations featured Boston fans, frenzied from the joy of victory, screaming, “We’re the champs!”

The irony here is that not one fan directly contributed to the Red Sox winning the pennant. Yes, fans cheer and support the team. They buy tickets and wear team T-shirts and caps. But the fans did not swing a bat or catch a fly ball. They did not hit a doubleheader or steal one base. Most fans never meet the players personally. Yet every fan will happily take ownership of a team’s success and unabashedly proclaim, “WE won!”

In a recent article in Psychology Today, Ed Hirt, a professor of psychological studies at Indiana University, explains that when a fan is so focused and obsessed on a game, it triggers certain neurons in his brain. The fan vicariously becomes the athlete. “The die-hard fan experiences the same hormonal surges as the athlete. He feels like he is the one hitting a home run,” Hirt says. That is why the team’s success becomes the fan’s success. The fan is unable to differentiate himself from the team; thus it becomes “we.”

In the Bible, we are reminded that “victory comes from the Lord” (Psalm 3:8). In John

16:33, Jesus reminds us, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” In Deuteronomy 20:4, we are told that it is “God who goes with us to fight against our enemies to give us victory.”

When Jesus died on the cross, He claimed victory over sin. When we believe in Jesus Christ, we can experience that victory in our lives. Do you claim that victory? Do you take ownership of Jesus’ success and victory and unabashedly proclaim, “We won?” Most of us usually do not make that kind of claim. Why not? Because, for many of us, we feel that we need to do something, our part, to claim that victory. But that is not how God works.

God stands and fights for us and gives us the victory. God died for us and gives us the victory. God wants us to take owner-ship of His victory. Because He loves you like crazy, He would have it no other way.

What is stopping you from claiming that which has already been won?
