Another level
Joburg is often bemoaned for its lack of fi ne-dining options
surprising for a city of its style and stature. But this might well
be because patrons are looking in all the wrong places.
Level Four restaurant at 54 On Bath in Rosebank, one of the
Tsogo Sun groups premium boutique destinations, is a surprising
discovery tucked discretely away in the elegant corner hotel. The
cosy dining room (on the fourth fl oor, as the name suggests) is a
homey space with rich claret-coloured wallpaper and
gingham-upholstered tub chairs like home, only smarter.
In keeping with the feeling of the restaurant, and the tone of
the hotel overall, which is elegant, but warm and welcoming,
executive chef Phil de Villiers serves classically inspired dishes
like beef fi llet, pork belly and creamy gnocchi.
Substantial though they may be, this is no rustic pub fare and
these traditional favourites are given a sophisticated spin via
their presentation the gnocchi was especially lovely in a beautiful
miniature copper saucepan with a mix of wild mushrooms. If youre
looking for something more lavish, the menu also has a variety of
indulgent options that include a lobster bisque with crme frache
and Saldanha mussels and an Asian-infl uenced seared duck breast
with ginger and plum sauce and miso carrots.
Its fi ne dining but with heart, and the seamless service
follows suit your jacket gets taken at the door and hung on a coat
rack, and the sta are meticulous without ever hovering. An
especially nice touch is the credit next to each item on the menu
the restaurant believes in acknowledging the creators of your
dishes and so youll fi nd a chefs name next to each, which makes
the experience that much more personal.
Try and time your visit so that you can fi t in a leisurely
drink next door at the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bar a plush and
intimate lounge that looks onto the terrace garden. Its a perfect
spot for pre-dinner drinks.

A t the start of the year I mentioned that one of my goals was
to improve my garden space. Well, I had no idea what I was getting
myself into! The ElNio-style weather patterns have not made it
easy. If its not the raging heat threatening to make my new plants
wither, then its the wild wind trying to lift them o the ground.
Gardening has tested my patience and endurance to keep things

When it comes to cocktails, we all know the old classics. Cuban
mojitos and daiquiris are common in any good cocktail bar, English
Pimms jugs and mint juleps are popular at summer events, and the
American cosmopolitan can often be found in the hands of trendy
partygoers. But as Joburg embraces the increasingly popular
cocktail bar, theres a defi nite move towards championing the South
African cocktail

The fi lm Singin in the Rain is generally considered Hollywoods
greatest screen musical. Since its release in 1952, audiences have
fallen in love with the charm of Gene Kelly, Donald OConnor and
Debbie Reynolds. Creating a stage version that lives up to the fi
lms prestige is no mean feat, yet thats exactly what UK artistic
director Jonathan Church has done.
Fresh from touring New Zealand, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and
Singapore, the cast of Singin in the Rain are slick, energetic and
delightful to watch. From the minute the fi rst clothing rack rolls
onto stage, the audience is transported back to the wonder of 1920s
Hollywood, complete with dancing make-up girls, singing stage
sweepers, frustrated directors, and the now iconic trio of Don
Lockwood, Cosmo Brown, and Kathy Selden.
Filling the shoes of Gene Kelly in his most famous role must be
intimidating, yet Grant Almirall takes on the role with calm
strength and magnetism that make it hard to take your eyes o him
and why would you want to? His dancing and singing are mesmerising,
the highlight of the show coming in the fl awless recreation of the
iconic Singin in the Rain scene where water is recycled down to
rain on the stage, and the fi rst few rows of the audience get a
little drenched (pack a raincoat if youre planning on sitting up
front).
Bethany Dickson also makes a fantastic Kathy Selden. Just as Don
Lockwood cant help falling in love with Kathy, its hard not to
become a little smitten with Dickson, whose singing and dancing
carry the weight of such a famous role perfectly. Paired with
Steven van Wyk playing Cosmo Brown, whose rendition of Make em
Laugh is unforgettable, and Taryn-Lee Hudson, who makes a perfect
Lina Lamont, the cast ensure that youll be singing and skipping all
the way home rain optional.
If you love big musicals and old-time, feel-good classics, this
is defi nitely a show that you shouldnt miss. With its combination
of uplifting music, enchanting choreography, and fl awless
costumes, Singin in the Rain will shower you with everything an
epic musical should be.

African cocktails for The Landmark, a spot already teeming with
South African history.
Luckily for Wainwright, AA Badenhorst Family Wines had been
working to recreate such an ingredient, and when they were ready to
release the revival to the world, The Landmark was fi rst in line.
Named Caperitif, like its original inspiration, this is a Chenin
Blanc fortifi ed with spirit, gently sweetened by the sugar of the
grapes, bittered by Quinchona bark and fl avoured with some 35
truly Cape ingredients such as fynbos, kalmoes, and naartjies and

Adi Badehorst brought this purely South African aromatised wine

Owners of The Bamboo Palace, Kevin Collins and Nicholas de Beer,
say its a studio and workshop for the rejuvenation of people and
furniture.
Q: How did your business start?A: Nicholas was a kitchen
renovator,
and I (Kevin) work in advertising and Im also a painter. I had
been running a student digs, and when I closed it down, I was left
with a pile of ghastly furniture. When Nicholas refreshed it with
some paint and fi ller e ects, we realised that we were on to
something, and decided to see if we could share our skills and our
wares with the public. The Bamboo Palace was opened 18 months
ago.
Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
A: We were always fascinated by the space down by the river at
the bottom of Delta Park. It is agricultural land in the heart of
the city, administered by the Rand Epilepsy Employment Association
(REEA), and we just
believe that theres something magical about this
juxtaposition.
Q: How did you fi nd your premises?A: We took in a proposal to
negotiate
with the REEA board to open our shop there. They looked at their
land and o ered us a space with a broken slab and asked us if we
could use it and build there, and we did.
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?
A: The premises have a large outside space surrounded by
beautiful trees. Painting is a messy business, and we can have the
joy of splashing without worrying about carpets. The premises are
also airy and have patches of shade, so we can move around with the
sun, fi nding the perfect spaces to paint. The shop we built is
ideal for showcasing our furniture, and the outdoor space is also
great for the workshops we run.
Q: Who are your neighbours?A: We have the Colorful Splendour
Nursery, the REEA vegetable garden, a second-hand bookshop,
the Delta Cafe, and the horse stables where people take riding
lessons.
Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?
A: The rates are R120 to R160/m2, but negotiable depending on
what the tenant brings to the community.
Q: What is your shop footprint?A: During the week, we get 10 to
20
people a day. On Saturday we can get up to 50 people marching
through. Once weve been discovered, people almost always come back,
bringing a friend and a piece of furniture. We do restorations for
them, but for us, the fi rst prize is to get them to feel that they
can do it themselves.
Q: Do you have any expansion plans?A: We would like to get our
workshops
up to full capacity, running weekly or twice weekly events for
the same groups of people like a book club. Wed provide wine and a
snack, and theyd provide the community to support each other
through theprocess of restoration. Its heart-warming to see people
all leaping in, getting dirty and helping each other.
Q: Do you operate online as well?A: We respond to queries,
take
bookings and interact a lot on our Facebook page.
Q: Whats your most popular item?A: Our fastest-selling items are
bedside
pedestals in matching pairs. People dont really think about them
until they need them and then have to fork out R4,000 or even
R6,000 for a new or antique pair. We can paint repurposed dressing
tables or desks, or original pieces, for around R600 to R1,400 a
pair. People also like clever packing spaces because of the
decreasing size of living spaces.

AConstruction of the R3,5bn Clairwood Logistics Park will
commence soon, creating employment and business opportunities
within the South Durban Basin.
KwaZulu-Natals MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and
Environmental A airs Michael Mabuyakhulu gave the project the
go-ahead after his department found that the amended Environmental
Impact Report (EIR) received from the Capital Property Fund in
September2014, complied with stringent regulations and adequately
addressed concerns raised during an appeal.

Rate hike means a bumpy ride for property
The recent repo rate hike of 50 basis points comes as no
surprise, says Samuel See , chairman, See group. Consumers should
be aware that this is the fi rst of more hikes to follow. According
to him, a ordability will be the key theme for the property market.
Buyers will be looking closely at prices and driving a hard
bargain, See adds.
Looking at the rate hike pragmatically, Andrew Golding, CEO, Pam
Golding Property Group, says that although house price growth has
slowed, nominal prices are currently at record highs of about
R1,386m, while the real price, which takes infl ation into account,
is just 10% o its record highs before the 2007 crisis. We have a

Life insurance is a di cult subject. Not only does it require
you to consider your own mortality, but it also means having to put
some sort of a value on what you are worth.
It can be di cult to think about your family carrying on without
you, but that is exactly what has to be done when thinking about
whether you need life insurance and how much you might need.
If you have anyone who depends on you fi nancially, whether that
is children, a spouse, parents or siblings, then life insurance is
critical.
Life insurance guarantees that your death wont leave your
dependants in fi nancial trouble. Its not about paying for your
funeral or having some money to buy something nice to cheer them
up, but about ensuring that they can meet all their fi nancial
obligations without your income.
Particularly if you are paying o signifi cant debts, such as a
home loan or a car, it is worth making sure that those are covered
by an insurance policy that can remove that burden. You might also
need life insurance to cover the expenses of your estate.
When working out how much life insurance you need, consider:
1 How much would I need to pay o all my debt?2 What are my
monthly expenses, and how much would I need to
create that income for my family at a drawdown rate of 5% a
year?
3 Will I need to provide funding for my childrens future
education?4 Do I need to provide for the expenses in my
estate?However, life insurance is not something that you
necessarily need to hang on to
forever. Just as you dont need to insure a car that you no
longer own, you can outlive your need for life insurance. This
would be the case if you satisfy three criteria:
1 You and your spouse are independently wealthy enough and each
has enough income to meet your debt obligations and sustain your
standard of living. If either of you passed away, the other would
therefore still be in a stable fi nancial position.
2 You have no other dependants. If your children are self-su
cient adults, and you are not responsible for any other family
members, then your death would not leave anyone fi nancially
vulnerable.
3 Your estate is either too small to attract estate duties, or
has enough liquid assets to meet the taxes and executors fees. In
South Africa the fi rst R3,5m of your estate is currently exempt
from tax.
