Quirky funT he folks over at Parliament Restaurant know exactly
what theyre about. When climbing the spiral staircase up to
Benmores newest and cheekiest spot, Parliaments tongue-in-cheek
rules dictate that customers behave themselves (but not too much)
and, above all, that everyone has a good time.
Situated above Eatery JHB on 11thStreet, Parliament boasts an
open deck offering epic views across the suburbs. Come evening, its
the perfect place to visit with friends to watch the sunset while
you sip on delicious craft beers or local wines. The attitude
behind this chic gastropub is summed up in the manifesto: Much like
the traditional inception of Parliament, our restaurant stands as a
bastion of free speech, an outpost for moral debate, and a place
for members to get a little rowdy.
Making the most of its raised position and open space,
Parliaments balcony seating wraps around two sides of the
restaurant, with a long bar in the centre making up the heart of
the space and ensuring that you dont have to wait too long to get a
drink. The simple rustic decor and the Parliamentary buffalo
painting (complete with wig) looking down over the room, make for a
classy, fun, and relaxed atmosphere.
Though Parliament shines as a pub in even the strictest drinkers
book, the real highlight of an evening on the deck is the food.
Taking its dishes very seriously, theres a distinct focus on
ensuring that everything that leaves the kitchen is unique,
filling, and delicious. The menu is
divided into Mains for you and Mains for the table, giving you
the chance to get a little social and share something tasty with a
friend. The 1kg T-bone is a favourite, especially when paired with
the beef fat fries and aioli Parliaments signature.
But make sure that you get there soon, as the menu changes
regularly and theres no way to know how long a menu item will be
available for. Grab some friends and a few beers, and end your
evening off with the unforgettable caramel macaroon and hazelnut
ice-cream sandwich.

The global coffee chain Starbucks fi nally opens its doors on
our shores
Hot on the heels of brands like Burger King, H&M, and Krispy
Kreme, Starbucks is the latest international super brand to arrive
in South Africa.
Adding to its global network of premier co ee shops, Starbucks
opened its fi rst two stores at the Rosebank Mall and the Mall of
Africa in Midrand in April. The 485m2 Starbucks Rosebank store is
located at the corner of Cradock and Tyrwhitt Avenues, and the
Starbucks Mall of Africa store, located on the centres upper level,
is 289m2. Both locations will allow customers to connect in an
urban oasis, hosting community tables, sofas and a Starbucks
Reserve co ee bar.
Taste Holdings, a local licensor of global brands in the
Southern Africa region, has been given the exclusive rights to
develop, own and operate the South African Starbucks retail

As more and more young creatives move into the bustling suburb
of Linden, an art scene is developing that celebrates and explores
some of Joburgs most exciting new artists. At the centre of all of
this, No End Contemporary Art Space has taken up residence on 4th
Avenue, giving Joburgers the chance to discover the citys best
up-and-coming artists.
Opened last year by Maaike Bakker, Jayne Crawshay-Hall, and
Dalene Victor Meyer, No End Contemporary Art Space aims to showcase
the work of contemporary artists working and living in South
Africa. As artists themselves, they identifi ed the need to have
more exhibition platforms in Joburg, especially for newer artists.
Rather than fi ghting for limited space at current venues, they
decided to create their own venue, with the main aim of supporting
young artists and curators by providing a platform to showcase
their work. Realising that areas such as Maboneng and Braamfontein
were already saturated with smaller spaces like this one, they
decided to look further afi eld, and found their dream home in
Linden.
In deciding to set up their exhibition space here, the trio were
excited by the prospect of helping to energise the arts in a new
area. With the infl ux of young creatives in Linden, it was
a no-brainer to provide an already present audience with the
exhibitions that they were looking for. At this point, No End
Contemporary Art Space focuses on curated group exhibitions that
feature di erent artists and mediums, experimenting with the
limited space available to them.
Going forward, the team have big plans for more focused
exhibitions, and have already seen the benefi t of their space in
the quality of the artists looking to exhibit in No End
Contemporary.
While showcasing young artists, the space also sets out to
expand on the art-buying pool in South Africa. By encouraging
established and emerging buyers to invest in successful art pieces,
the No End Contemporary team hope to assist in creating a more
self-sustainable, contemporary art cycle.

Holdings, theres a possibility for 150 stores in South Africa in
the coming years. In terms of product positioning, Carlo says that
pricing will be competitive with other premium co ee o erings in
the South African market.
But how will the chain compete with the rise of the artisanal co
ee industry in the country? Weve seen in other markets where co ee
consumption is growing that brands and independent co ee shops grow
in line with one another, showing there is room for everyone, he
says. What were focused on is delivering quality handcrafted
beverages with world-class customer service in beautiful stores to
customers in South Africa.
Carlo says that the South African stores will be an example of
the Starbucks third place concept, where communities can connect
outside of home and work. As well as being able to buy the range of
drinks Starbucks has to o er, customers will have access to

community tables, neighbourhood noticeboards and free Wi-Fi.
For its South African stores, Starbucks will use local
contractors, artists and artisans wherever possible. Both the
Rosebank and Mall of Africa stores have been designed with the
local neighbourhood in mind and to refl ect the communities they
serve, says Carlo.
Besides co ee, Starbucks will also o er a selection of
sandwiches, baked o erings and pastries. However, stores will also
be localised to suit the South African taste profi les. For
example, there will be a rooibos tea o ering thats been developed
in conjunction with Rooibos which is a fi rst in Starbucks stores
across the globe.

Research has shown that humans have a tendency to recognise
animal and human forms in all kinds of places. Called pareidolia by
scientists, its the reason we spot everything from the Virgin Mary
in burnt toast, and a rabbit in the moon, to facial expressions in
cars. In design, however, actively appealing to this instinct is
often seen as the worst kind of kitsch. Objects are supposed to be
as neutral as possible and people are supposed to be the ones with
personalities. But some designers disagree.
Jaime Hayon is one of these designers. From his monkey side
table for BDBarcelona Design to his menagerie of crystal vessels
for Baccarat, he believes that theres nothing wrong with having a
bit of fun with interiors. Atthe recent Design Indaba conference,
he explained how he wanted to create

objects with personality. His Catch Chair for &Tradition,
for example, looks like its reaching out to hug you as you sit down
engaging with the user even as a static object.
Locally, were seeing this trend show up in all kinds of pieces.
The LittleMan Lamp series from David Krynauw, for example, appears
to be sitting back and resting tired legs. The Goggo Bench by Frank
Bohm, on the other hand, is designed so that, according to the
designer, its scale and irregular legs mimic the goggos swift
motion.
This trend comes and goes as people either try to create more
serious or light-hearted interiors. While its sometimes obvious and
sometimes more subconsciously appealing, its easy to see the joy
people get out of objects that look at least a little bit friendly
in a sometimes stressful world.

bakery has now become a popular restaurant group with 12 branches

S tephanie Fassler is a stained glass artist who has been
designing and creating stained glass works from her studio in
Melville since 1984.
Q: How did your business start?A: I did an apprenticeship with
one
of Englands leading stained glass artists in the early 1960s. I
then started taking my own commissions, working between South
Africa and the UK for a number of years, before fi nally settling
here in 1972.
Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
A: I work out of a studio in my home. Melville is lovely because
it is elevated and near the Koppies, which connect us to our
ancient origins. Its also like a village with smaller properties
that are close to the street, which makes you feel less isolated.
We have lovely cafes and bookshops and there is a wonderful
community of artists, writers and actors.
Q: How did you fi nd your premises?A: I found my property
through an
estate agent, and it was my second attempt to buy a house in
Melville. Thank goodness my fi rst attempt fell through because
there wasnt really a suitable work space.
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?
A: Well, the garage was initially in a shocking state, but it
had the potential to be converted into a functional workspace with
a kiln. Then in the 1980s I built a studio above the garage to
function as my own exhibition and retail space.
Q: Who are your neighbours?A: Over the road is 27Boxes, and
half
a block away youll fi nd Melvilles 4th Street. I have
residential neighbours on either side of me.
Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?
A: Im not really in that market, but I know that 27Boxes has
very a ordable retail spaces.
Q: How many people go through your store each day?
A: I work mostly by appointment, and participate in exhibitions
and markets from time to time. But I do host an annual open studio
at Christmas time, and then we get lots of people coming through to
have a look.
Q: Do you have any expansion plans?
A: No. I take part in exhibitions and markets as they come up,
but my work and studio spaces are perfectly suited to my needs.
Q: Do you operate online as well?A: I dont have a website, but I
do
have a Facebook page. Its not really an online kind of a
business, although I do ship pieces all over the world when I
receive international commissions.
Q: Whats your most popular item?A: At the moment, our most
popular
items are the angels that my assistant and I make out of
recycled glass. Were also getting quite a bit of interest in our
stepping stones with glass inlays.

The incredible story of Curro
S ince listing on the JSE in July 2011 Curro has been one of the
most talked about shares in the country. The company, which runs
affordable private schools across South Africa, has grown its share
price by more than 700% over this time.
It has been a remarkable growth story, not only because of how
incredibly lucrative it has been for investors, but because of what
the company does. Schooling hardly seems like a sexy business, but
led by a passionate CEO, Chris van der Merwe, Curro has proved to
be the right idea at the right time.
Providing affordable, high-quality education is without doubt
South Africas biggest challenge, and Curro has shown that its not
simply a problem that should be left up to the state to solve.
There are real opportunities for the private sector to become
involved, not simply out of charity, but because it makes good
business sense.
Curros story, however, began long before it became a listed
company. Van der Merwe started Curro as a school of 28 learners in
the hall of the NG Kerk Bergsig in Durbanville. The experiment
nearly didnt survive because he failed to meet his targets for
growing learner numbers and he was paying teachers out of his bond.
But he had a vision and he refused to be told that it wouldnt
work.
He later built the first Curro school himself with 10
bricklayers and 30 labourers, and that began the journey which led
his company to now own 115 schools across South Africa at which it
educates around 42,000 children.
It is a remarkable example of how a business can be enormously
profitable and serve society at the same time. Consider that around
30,000 of Curros 42,000 learners come from previously disadvantaged
communities. Across all its schools, it maintains a matric pass
rate of over 99%.
Curro employs 5,000 staff members, of which 2,700 are educators,
and 38% of those are black. It also assists the state in the
professional development of teachers.
Those are what Van der Merwe calls the untold stories the
meaningful way in which the company is contributing to the future
of this country. The telling thing is that these cannot be
separated from the success of Curro as a business. It is such a
great company precisely because of what it does. And that is a
great lesson to all entrepreneurs.

Curro shares in 2011 was at R5,50 per share. They now change
hands at around R40 per share

The national average cost for a property in South Africa is
R700,000, whereas the average price of a property within an estate
is R2m nearly three times the national average, says Paul-Roux de
Kock, analytics director, Lightstone.
But where are the most expensive estates? Lightstone analysed
the median value for a property within estates:

Despite several years of rapid development there are still some
200,000m2 of commercial office space at various stages of

Increase in residential building activity driven by apartments
and townhousesYear-on-year growth in the volume of building
activity in the planning phase of the South African market for new
housing, remained in the low single digits in the first two months
of 2016, according to Absas latest Residential Building Statistics
report.
The volume of activity in the construction phase of new housing
showed relatively strong growth compared with a year ago, which was
the result of a sharp improvement in one segment of the market on

which is prompting some buyers to look further afield to areas like
Midrand, which is equidistant from Pretoria and Joburg. With an
easy commute via the Gautrain, Midrand is appealing for many

densely populated areas in South Africa within the next 30
years.
While the housing markets in Gautengs mining and manufacturing
towns experienced subdued growth last year, the markets in major
metro areas which are more reliant on the more diverse and
resilient services industries have continued to flourish. This is
according to Andrew Golding, CEO, Pam Golding.
A prime example is Sandton, he says, which remains the
financial
year-on-year basis since the start of the year. These trends are
based on data published by Statistics South Africa in respect of
building activity related to private sector-financed housing.
From January to February this year the number of new housing
units for which building plans were approved increased by 3,2% year
on year (y/y), or 271 units, to 8,806 units over this two-month
period.
The construction phase saw the number of new housing units built
increasing by 28,1% y/y, or 1,443 units, to 6,575 units
in the first two months of the year.This growth, however, was
the result of strong growth in the segment for apartments and
townhouses.
The number of apartments and townhouses reported as being built
increased by around 122% y/y, or 1,507 units, to a cumulative 2,739
units in January and February.
The sharp increase in housing units built in this segment of the
market compared with a year ago, may be attributed to reporting
trends.

The Somerset Lakes adventure lifestyle estate in Somerset West
