The owners of Hashi are originally from Venezuela, so it may
come as a surprise that they specialise in Japanese fusion food at
this unassuming spot in Linden. But they do it very well, and it
must stem in part from their experience working with fusion
Japanese restaurants in their home country and the Caribbean.
Hashi is small and low-key with the focus squarely on the food.
The menu blends Japanese techniques with exotic South American
flavours, giving patrons a unique dining experience. On the night
we visited, the restaurant was filled with couples and small groups
of friends having a quick mid-week bite to eat. Grab a table on the
pavement if the weather is balmy, or head inside on cooler nights
and get a seat at one of the comfy high tables on the left-hand
side.
We started with the sushi pizza, which was the definite
highlight of the meal. Sushi and pizza may not seem like natural
cuisine companions, but the crunchy rice base topped with slices of
salmon and avocado, all topped off with spicy Hashi sauce and
sprinkled with
spring onions, was absolutely delicious we should have ordered
two of them. We also had some fried dumplings (gyozas) filled with
mince and vegetables, which were served in a fragrant broth.
For mains we chose from the collection of 40 or so sushi
variations, snacking on spicy crunch salmon hand rolls, prawn
nigiri and crispy chicken rolls. We finished off with the soup of
the day, which was chicken and sweetcorn, as well as a bowl of
warming miso soup.
The menu also features dishes for non-sushi lovers such as
Japanese udon noodles, kingklip with lemon butter, and teriyaki
pork fillet, making Hashi a great all-round option offering
delicious food and quick service in an uncomplicated setting.
If youre looking to eat out and still save cash, Hashi runs
various food specials and three-course set menus for celebrations.
Having recently moved from its former location in Rosebank, Hashi
is yet another addition to Lindens thriving pavement foodie scene,
and a welcome one at that.

childrens homes, charity centres and church feeding schemes. Now

When taking your team to a Design Thinking workshop with MOAD,

A s the industrial trend continues to gain popularity, were
seeing an increasing focus on exposed hardware in product design.
Rather than trying to create furniture with a slick appearance,
designers are drawing attention to the details that hold everything
together. Often, this also plays with the contrast between everyday
materials and very considered fixtures and fittings for added
appeal.
At the more conceptual end of the spectrum, designers like the
Dutch studio Droog are selling fixtures that allow people to either
build or update existing pieces. This appeals to people with a DIY
spirit and those who want to get a high-design piece at a
relatively lower cost. The Construct Me hardware collection
includes distinctive hinges, nails and even screws that smile at
you.
Locally, this trend is often seen in flatpack, DIY furniture.
Designers like Raw Studios appeal to this low-tech aesthetic with
products like the Klik storage system. An update on pegboard
shelving, Klik features modular shelving and storage that can be
reconfigured to fit a number of needs. By keeping the structure of
the system visible, it becomes a feature rather than something
purely functional.
This trend has definite appeal in the local market where we dont
have stores like IKEA that really democratise design. The ability
to personalise and add a special touch to ordinary pieces of
furniture is compelling, and hopefully well see more brands
introducing products like this in the future.

O ccupational therapy practice GrowFully was established by
Eloise du Plooy and Janka Poggenpoel. Its main area of interest is
in the field of paediatrics. They offer group-based therapy to
children of various ages. Two core needs were identified and their
group sessions, Senso-Art and Baby Bump, were
developed to address these needs.Senso-Art provides a platform
for multisensory exploration. It consists of various art, craft and
messy play activities that are aimed at stimulating development as
well as creativity. Baby Bump is a collection of sessions aimed at
new parents and their bundles of joy. The vision of these antenatal
groups is to teach little hands to do great things.
Q: How did your business start?A: GrowFully was born out of love
for
children. The name was chosen to reflect not only the vision but
also the purpose of the practice, which is to guide children to
grow to their full potential. Our goal is to empower parents to
create an environment for their children in which growth and
learning can flourish.
Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
A: Moreleta Park is a residential area boasting various small
home industries. As it is an established neighbourhood, there are
many preschools and childcare centres in the vicinity which provide
us with a vast client base while being conveniently located for
parents.
Q: How did you find your premises?A: Fortunately one of the
therapists is
a homeowner in Moreleta Park. The property is ideally located
and had previously housed a daycare centre which made the premises
perfect.
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?
A: The premises are situated in a family-friendly neighbourhood
with lush gardens and varioustrees,

therapeutic equipment and activities.

want to
create an interactive educational platform for parents in

Q: Whats your most popular item/service?
A: Our most popular occupational therapy service is the early
childhood stimulation Senso-Art groups. These groups are 90 minutes
in duration and offer a wide variety of stimulation activities that
were carefully selected and planned to optimise creativity and
play. The most popular item in The Grow Shop is the Baby Floater.
This device offers a unique water-based exercise for infants.
Research has shown that baby floating improves muscle tone, balance
and early left/right brain development.

The infrastructure challengeOne of the ironies of South Africas
current economic problems is that the government has already mapped
out many of the solutions. The National Development Plan (NDP) sets
out all the most important things that need to be done to return
this country to a path of prosperity.
For complex reasons, however, implementation of the NDP is
lacking. And unfortunately we dont have the leadership to drive
it.
One of the most critical issues identified by the NDP is that
infrastructure development is key to economic growth. Building
schools, roads, hospitals and communications infrastructure will
unlock more of this countrys potential.
Developing infrastructure is also recognised as one of the most
effective ways of fighting poverty and inequality. Giving people
better access to education, health care and commercial
opportunities, immediately improves their chances of being
economically productive.
A big part of the challenge facing South Africa is that the
government is not short on plans for building infrastructure. The
question is whether these plans are appropriate, how they will be
implemented, and whether they address the right concerns.
These issues make the environment more difficult for business,
but perhaps they also present an opportunity. In the modern world
it is increasingly understood that the private sector can play a
significant, and very profitable, role in developing and running
infrastructure.
There are already a number of pertinent examples in South
Africa. The highly successful renewable energy programme, which has
seen the majority of projects funded and built by private
enterprises, is one of them. The enormously successful Curro
private school group is another, and of course the countrys private
hospital groups have been a key part of the healthcare landscape
for years.
These examples should make every South African business think.
Currently local companies have huge amounts of unspent cash on
their balance sheets because they are wary of investing in an
uncertain environment.

gardens of up to 53m2. Areas like Sandton and Bryanston are known
for these types of properties, but this is a first for
Lynnwood.
An already desirable neigh-bourhood, Lynnwood is undergoing a
face-lift as a result of the many new developments taking place in
the area. Gerhard van der Linde, MD, Seeff Pretoria East, says
current developments will make the
Gautrain Sandton Station, its outer face connecting a vibrant
street-fronted retail area with those on foot the station pavement
has been expanded to a wider pedestrian zone of 5,2m in some areas
and a new pavement design includes trees and balustrades.
West Streets pavements were improved for the City of
Johannesburgs EcoMobility World Festival 2015. They are now getting
an additional makeover to improve pedestrian access. Situated above
and adjacent to the Gautrain station, Kgoro Central is a new
mixed-use green development that will create a pedestrian- and
bicycle-friendly urban environment using wide, demarcated
walkways,
cycle paths and facilities. SandtonCity has added a
pedestrian-friendly entrance with its Protea Court expansion. In
2018, Discovery moves to a new resource-efficient, sustainable
87,000m2 global head office building.
Improved walkability makes a city more appealing to residents
and businesses, according to Elaine Jack, city improvement district
manager, Sandton Central Management District. Much of Sandtons road
infrastructure was developed with only vehicles in mind, typical of
the development of its time. Today it is increasingly recognised
that walkability is an important part of sustainable urban design,
says Jack.
Bantry Bay luxury apartments on trackG lobal property investment
company DaRealty is set to transform the Bantry Bay residential
coastline. On the site of the former Ambassador Hotel, new
apartments in The Aurum development have price tags of up to R115m
apiece.
Plans were approved in April for the landmark property to be
developed into eight presidential residences, each occupying its
own floor with private lift access. The building on the mountain
side of Victoria Road will also be transformed into 15luxurious
apartments, capped by a four-bedroom 530m penthouse.
Ahsan Hassan Darvesh, president of the 107-year-old,
family-owned Darvesh organisation, bought the hotel after a lengthy
stay when he realised the potential of the spectacular cliff-face
site above the Atlantic Ocean.
Lily Eskandari, chief operating officer, DaRealty, and an
interior architect, said construction was scheduled to start in
June. Occupation is set for September 2017.
DaRealty has appointed Fabian Architects, engineering and
construction group Murray & Roberts, and luxury home specialist
Metle to maximise the potential of this
exclusive address. The apartments will include Armani Dada
kitchens, dressing room fixtures, and fittings by Molteni&C,
Gessi sanitary ware, sound and visual systems by Bang &
Olufsen, and designer appliances by Gaggenau.
Aurum will redefine the concept of limited-edition living in SA,
says Basil Moraitis, area manager, Pam Golding Properties Atlantic
Seaboard. It has an exclusive agency sales mandate, and 60% of
development sales are already secured. Darvesh says Aurum will be
followed by a development in Clifton, with a goal of one niche
boutique project being rolled out annually in SA.
The stable repo rate offers assurance to property owners
The pause in the repo rate will provide aspirant and existing
homeowners with a further assurance of the sound medium- to
long-term investment potential in property. Homebuyers
demonstrate an increasing desire to own their own homes, while
other trends reflect a continued high demand for rental
accommodation, secure estate living, convenient urban apartments in
commercial hubs, and family homes with access to good schooling.
