Even though-XXYYXX

The video for Even Though by XXYYXX, is set outside in a forest. The shots include lots of disjointed images of the forest, using a quick crabbing shot- this creates a ‘trippy’ feel, which correlates with the genre of music- Chillwave. The camera follows a path through the forest, so as a viewer it feels like we are going on the journey with them. This is reinforced by the kaleidoscope effect which creates confusion. The colours XXYYXX use are very surreal as they use different hues and saturations, e.g. the sky is pink, this fits in with the running theme of disarray. The colours are also very pale, and contrast with each other. We also noticed that when the beat drops within the song that the colours change, it makes the video feel very hallucinogenic, and allows you to appreciate the simplicity of the music.I have pulled this shot from the video , as I feel this is the sort of idea we are trying to create. Hopefully we will be able to do something similar to this, by doing simple shots of the surroundings and edit them using different filters and hues. Unlike this video though we are intending to have more of a story line, including a young girl and her trip through the forest. This story line goes against traditional and typical fables of girls in a wood, e.g. Red Riding Hood, our modern spin on this fits in to our genre, which has become big since 2013.

Never Leave- XXYYXX

This video is very psychedelic and shows jellyfish. Similar to all the other XXYYXX videos there is no real characters shown and instead there is something natural, e.g. trees. We will be part taking on this aspect as ours will be set in nature, but it will have people in it.The colours used are extremely bright, and they contrast a lot with each other, which catches the audience’s eye. This goes with the song as it is fairly upbeat. The movement of the jelly fish also resembles the beat of the song.

Cirrus- Bonobo

The video for Cirrus by Bonobo also has a very surreal feel. The video has strongly contrasting themes of vintage and very modern aspects, shown in the image above of the 60s housewives. The story line of the video is that all the small things in life, join to together to make a large robot that wants to trample down earth. The video has a ‘trippy’ feel of disillusion as the video doesn’t follow basic conventions of shots, as they use lots of images all on top of one another. This creates the feel that we are trying to achieve in our video-disarray and confusion. Also, again the video doesn’t really have a strong narrative and instead is just a number of events which don’t necessarily correlate, which is similar to other music in this genre. The video has a strong rhythmic feel to it, which matches the idea of the robot being made of lots of little elements working as clock work.

M83- Wait

This video is a over exaggerated version of the video we are trying to create. It has all the aspects that we are trying to achieve, e.g. It is set outside in nature, it has a narrative, and a surreal feel. The video doesn’t necessarily follow the conventions of the genre in every way, as this video is more detailed and looks like it has had more a budget to it.We plan to use an attractive female protagonist in our video, whereas in this video they have used children that appear to be on drugs. In some parts of the video we can see a psychedelic elements, as when the boy is in side the pyramid he looks as though he is having a seizure.

Giving it All- Bondax

The video for Giving it all by Bondax, shows a story between a young couple and their adventures, which is quite common for Chillwave music style. The lyrics of the chorus in the song relate back to the couple and their relationship as he is ‘giving it all’ to be with her.The colours of the video also match the lyrics, as they are bright and exciting, which is similar to the couples care- free lifestyles in the video.Unlike this video there is no disillusion, as it just tells a chronological story of a regular day, whereas the other videos are extremely surreal and unlikely. Our video aims to be in the middle of these two spectrums, as there will be confusion but it will be fairly realistic.
