    UNIT 2

    LIFE IN THE FUTURE

What will life be like in 100 years time? By then, the population of the world will have

doubled. We will have run out of many essestial materials like oil and coal. We may even

have run out of water to drink. Some experts believe that we will be living like these

chickens. We will be living in little boxes and eating artificial food.

    Questions

Imagine you are interviewing an expert about the future. Find out:

    1. How much larger the population of the world will be2. If we will have run out of some materials3. If there are other things we may have run out of4. How we may be living5. What we may be eating

Some experts are pessimistic. Others are far more optimistic. They say life will be far better

than it is today. We may be living in cities like this. We may be getting far more sunlight,

breathing fresher air, living in better buildings and leading far better lives than we are today.

    Questions

    A. Now imagine you are interviewing a more optimistic expert.Notice the questions and answers.

Ask a questions with the words better than it is today.

YOU : Do you think life will be better than it is today?THE EXPERT: Yes, I think it will or Yes, I think it may.

    B. Now ask questions ending with the words:1. In cities like this?2. Getting more sunlight?3. Breathing fresher air?4. In better buildings?5. Leading better lives?

Life will certainly have become far more mechanised. It may even have become too

mechanised. Mechanisation hs already caused quite a few problems and will cause still more.

For example, many jobs will have been automated. That is, machines will be doing manya

jobs that people do today. People will no longer be able to learn not only one job in their

lifetimes. They will have to learn several. Many of the jobs that young people are doing today

will have become unneccessary by the time they are forty. This problem will have grown in

    100 yaerss time.

    Questions

Ask the expert questions beginning, Do you think ...? using these words

    1. Life more mechanised in the future?2. Too mechanised?3. Mechanisation already caused problems?4. Cause still more?5. Will machines jobs that people do today?6. Only one job in their lifetimes?7. Some jobs become unneccessary?8. This problem grown in 100 years time?

    Discussion

    1. In a hundred years time, all sort things will or may have happened. What are some ofthem? For example, think of such things as:

A cure for cancer Space travel; the other planet Atomic power

    2. What are some of the things you think robots may be doing for us in 100 years time?

    UNIT 5

    EXPRESSING SYMPATHY

    Some Sympathy Sayings

He who has gone, so we but cherish his memory, abides with us, more potent, nay, more present than the living man.

Hold tight to memories for comfort. Lean on your friends for strength, and always remember how much you are cared

    about.

As you comprehend this profound loss, let yourself cry knowing each tear is a note oflove rising to the heavens.

Like a bird singing in the rain, let grateful memories survive in time of sorrow. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Peace, prayers and blessings. And you should always know, wherever you may go, No matter where you are, I will

    never be far away

Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lostones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.

In the night of death, hope sees a star, and listening love can hear the rustle of a wing. May you take comfort in knowing an angel is watching over you. Words cannot even begin to express our sorrow. You are in our prayers. May your memories give you strength. Whom the heart of man shuts out, Sometimes the heart of God takes in, And fences

them all round about, With silence mid the worlds loud din.

Remember that we love and care about you. May the love of those around you help you through the days ahead.

    Condolence Messages

May the peace which comes from the memories of love shared, comfort you now andin the days ahead.

May the comfort of God help you during this difficult time.

  • 8/12/2019 Modul Social Conversation

    14/31

We are thinking of you during this difficult time. Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel. Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are

very close in every thought and prayer.

You have my deepest sympathies on the death of your uncle. Oh heart, if one should say to you that the soul perishes like the body, answer that the

flower withers, but the seed remains.

Our hearts go out to you in your time of sorrow. I was deeply saddened to hear of your loss. My thoughts are with you. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family.

    Some More Messages of sympathy

When we lose someone we love, it seems that time stands still. What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one

more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon,

or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to

remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us

    memories too beautiful to forget.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy on the passing of your grandmother. To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around you

and whispered "come to me." With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass

away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart

stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He

    only takes the best.

You have my sincere condolences on the loss of your father. We are deeply saddened by your loss. We will cherish the memories of the times we

spent together. We are with you during this time of grief.

Although it's difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, May looking back in memoryhelp comfort you tomorrow.

Life is eternal, and love is immortal, and death is only a horizon; and a horizon isnothing save the limit of our sight.

    27/31

    EVERYDAY LIFE

DIVIDE YOUR CLASS INTO TEN GROUPS. DISCUSS THE TOPICS.

PRESENT IN FRONT OF THE CLASSROOM.

Once you realize that, you'll see that for interesting topics of conversation come from

everyday life and things that we all have in common. Then you'll realize it's not so difficult to

    think of them.

Don't think you have to be controversial and go for risky topics like politics and religion; you

don't. In fact, to do so would be a mistake. Whatever topic you choose should make peoplerelaxed and happy to talk; controversial subjects don't do that.

Think instead about what all people share: families, hopes, dreams, expereinces etc.

    1. Who is the most interesting person you ever met?

You can see how this would easily lead people to voice opinions and ask 'why?'.

    2. Where in the world would you most like to vist?

This dream location may be shared by others and so it makes people feel solidarity, but also,

people will be itching to ask 'why?' and keep the conversation flowing.

    3. What has been the most life-changing experience you've

    ever had?

Here, people can share funny and touching stories if they want to, which will help you get a

deeper understanding of them. Likewise, if people don't feel relaxed enough to give a heart-

felt reply they can answer in a funny way and it all adds to the conversation.

    4. What is the most spontaneous thing you've you ever done?

That opens the door to all sorts of funny and romantic stories.

  • 8/12/2019 Modul Social Conversation

    28/31

    5. Who's had the biggest influence on your life?

Because this person has influenced the person you're asking, they must view them positively

and have strong ideas about them. That means they're likely to enjoy talking about them.

    6. What thing that you haven't yet done would you most like

    to do?

This kind of inspirational question always gets people talking and everyone's usually happy

to chip in with comments about people's hopes and wishes. Just be careful when commenting

that you don't rain on their parade. It's their right to have whatever hopes they want.

    7. What is the best quality you've inherited from either of your parents?

This is particularly interesting at a family gathering when people know the parents you're

talking about. It's also a bit of a bonding experience, speaking favourably about your parents.

    8. From which person have you learned most in your life?

This is another uplifting, positive yopic of conversation that usually gets people talking.

    9. What historical figure do you most identify with?

This lets you know something about the other people around you; it also opens up discussion

of the events these historical figures were involved in. Yes, potentially it

takes you into dangerous waters of politics and religion, but people usually take this question

in the spirit of fun in which it's meant, so potentially awkward moments are easily averted.

    10. What kind of music do you like?

You could then go on to talk of CDs you've bought or gigs you've been too. You might even

ask - 'what's the most embarrassing album in your collection?' That's usually met with all-

    Round hilarity!
