COLLECTIONS INTEGRATED INTO INTERIOR DESIGN OF MID‑CENTURY MODERN SUBURBAN HOME
NESTLED IN NORTH DaLLaS, Carlos Cardoza’s textbook mid-century Modern suburban model home – an important house in a neighborhood of quietly important Modern houses – is a sprawling, flat-roofed beauty with beams running the length of the home, and exposed clerestory, maximizing space and light.
It prominently features a massive freestanding fireplace, with built-in gas grill, tying the central room together. Over the years, Cardoza, a graphic de-signer at Heritage Auctions, has compiled a spot-on inventory of authentic period-specific furnishings that reads like a guest list at a design awards show: Arne Jacobsen, Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi, George Nelson, Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Philippe Starck and numerous others.
Why the fascination with the 1950s? “It was the Atomic Age,” Cardoza says. “We were going to live on the moon and everything was going to be easy and beautiful. This came along with an explosion of design, the colors, the materi-als that came after the end of World War II.”
Each room has a theme and color scheme that coordinates with the pieces in the room. The pieces, though, are constantly being rearranged and the walls change colors, boldly, with the seasons.

Southampton Haven
FOR RICK FRIEDMAN, PRESIDENT OF HAMPTONS EXPO GROUP,
A HOME IS A CANVAS FOR A COLLECTOR TO PLAY ON
By Hector Cantú / Photographs by Erik Freeland
RICK FRIEDMAN NOT only lives with his art, he lives in the community his favorite artists called home.
Over the decades, New York’s Suffolk County has been home to some of the world’s most notable artists,
from Willem de Kooning and Fairfield Porter to Roy Lichtenstein and Larry Rivers. They’ve been lured by
“the golden dunes, refreshing breezes, radiant landscapes and frequent visits from the Muse,” notes the
book Hamptons Bohemia: Two Centuries of Artists and Writers on the Beach by Helen Harrison and Con-
stance Ayers Denne.
For Friedman, Southampton was a natural choice when he began searching for a home seven years ago.
“That book was inspirational to me,” says Friedman, president and founder of Hamptons Expo Group, which
produces fine art fairs across the country. “It defined the history of art in the Hamptons, and a big part of the
Abstract Expressionism movement was linked to the Hamptons. These artists lived and vacationed here.”
In addition to location, his five-bedroom contemporary home is ideal because it has lots of walls, Fried-
man says with a smile. “The great Larry Rivers said homes should not have windows, just walls to hang
paintings. We have something on every floor.”
Friedman owns about 180 pieces of art, with a focus on Abstract Expressionism from the 1950s, 1960s
and 1970s (“I’ve never met a painting from the ’50s I didn’t like,” he says, “and that can get you in trouble”).
If there’s a theme, it’s all about connections. “I try to have some kind of relationship between an artist and
