K-THERAPYintroduction

K-Therapy is the complete family of LAKMÉ’s treatments thatdeals with the main problems of the hair and scalp as well asproviding a feeling of comfort and well-being thanks to itsSPA components and the perfumes chosen for each product.

The combination of the most effective ingredients availablefrom botanical sources, and the properties of the water fromthe Zermatt glacier, restores the health of the hair and scalp.

It is known that water has been used for therapeutic purposessince as long ago as the Assyrian, Sumerian and Egyptiancivilisations. Later on, the Japanese, Chinese, Greeks andRomans recognised the properties of thermal baths fortherapeutic purposes.

The entire K-Therapy has been formulated with water fromthe Zermatt glacier, containing minerals and oligoelementswith natural properties that soften and protect the skin, aspart of its active ingredients. This water, with its uniquecombination of minerals, is encapsulated in lecithin liposomesso that they can be released into the deepest layers of theskin and so increase its moisturising power.

HAIR LOSSdefinition and causes

Alopecia -hair loss- is defined as the temporary or permanentloss of hair caused by physiological or pathological mechanismsthat alter the normal evolution of the hair cycle.

Signs that warn of its gradual appearance include, amongothers, increased fallout with washing and combing and thereplacement of terminal hair -usually fully developed- byanother, finer and less developed type.

This process usually appears around 20 in men and 25 inwomen.

Considerations:• Healthy hair: 25 hairs/day.• Slight temporary loss: between 25-50 hairs/day.• Persistent normal loss: up to 100 hairs/day.• Excessive persistent loss: over 100 hairs/day.

The number of hairs in the telogen phase (fallout phase)increases and the number of hairs in the anagen phase (growthphase) decreases. The duration of each phase also varies:

• Anagen phase: lasts between 2 and 3 years in healthy hairand 12-18 months in hair showing signs of loss (decreases).

• Catagen phase: lasts 2 to 3 weeks in both healthy hair andhair with fallout.

• Telogen phase: lasts 2 to 3 months in healthy hair and 6months in hair with fallout (increases).

The causes involved in progressive hair loss are many anddiverse leading to, in its final phase, definitive alopecia(common baldness).

Current theories have reached the conclusion that we face amultifactorial physiological phenomenon in which, amongother, the main triggers are: hereditary genetic factors, hormonal changes, blood circulation problems, excessivesebaceous secretion, chronic or temporary nervous illness, seasonal changes, environmental pollution, deficient diets, etc.

Reasons which, separately or combined, produce abnormalalterations in the usual development process of the hair follicleand hair growth.

TYPES OF ALOPECIA

PERMANENT ALOPECIA

Congenital and hereditary in origin, it is caused by importantinternal changes which are hard to resolve and require specificand controlled medical treatment.

This type of alopecia is also known as common baldness, malebaldness (androgenic alopecia) and seborrheic alopecia (giventhe association between seborrhea and alopecia).

It begins in puberty and intensifies in the 30’s. Although it ismore commonly found in men, it also occurs in women dueto psychological causes (depression, emotional shock, etc.).

It tends to begin in the forehead and crown, intensifyingtowards the central area which ends up with fine, colourlesshair. The back and sides of the scalp do not suffer alopecia.

TEMPORARY ALOPECIA

Physiological in nature, these are the types not caused byhereditary reasons, and a cosmetic solution can prevent andfight the problem to restore the hair’s vitality.

We can differentiate, in turn, between:

• Aerata alopecia: sudden loss of all or part of hair producedin very localised areas in the shape of round sections. It canoccur at any time of the year and in both sexes, and isnormally associated with emotional factors (depression, stress, anxiety, etc.).

• Diffuse alopecia: generalised loss of hair that affects thewhole scalp. Causes include pregnancy, childbirth, febrileillnesses, emotional factors, some drugs, radiotherapy, etc.

K-THERAPY ACTIVEthe active range

The ACTIVE range, formulated to treat hair loss problems, incorporates a complex of Procapil™ and olive leaf extract. These components in combination with a multivitamin complexstimulate the cell metabolism to delay hair loss, a new conceptfor global action.

To slow hair loss, it is necessary to achieve three objectives:

1) Reduce the production of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), thehormone responsible for the atrophy of the hair follicleand excess sebacious secretion.

2) Improve blood flow of the hair follicle.

3) Stimulate the production of molecules for enhacedadhesion of the hair.

OLEANOLIC ACIDExtracted from olive leaves.

It has the property of inhibiting 5-alpha-reductase, the enzymeresponsible for speeding up or shortening the hair cycle, asit acts on the hormone DHT.

The oleanolic acid acts directly on the enzyme, stimulatinghair growth and prolonging the anagen phase of the haircycle.

PROCAPIL™A complex of apigenine,a flavanoid extracted from citrus fruits.

It favours peripheral vasodilatation and increases local bloodflow, which improves the supply of vital elements to the hairfollicle, stimulating the adhesion protein of the root sheathand dermal papilla, thereby strengthening the adhesion ofthe follicle in the dermis.

PROCAPIL™EFFICIENCY TEST:

In vivo clinical test 35 volunteerssignificant 67% increase in anagen phase.

In vitro test58% growth in folliclessimilar to monoxydil at the same dose (2 ppm).

MULTIVITAMIN SUPPLY

Vitamins are nutrients that are essential for the normaldevelopment and growth of the hair. A lack of vitamins, A, H,E or B2 manifests itself in the form of brittle and devitalisedhair. The supply of vitamins, especially biotin, has a protectiveand reparative effect on the different parts of the hair follicle.

The formulations of the ACTIVE line incorporate a calmingfragrance with notes of water and chords of geranium andorange blossom.

For fragile, weak and brittle hair, the line has a specificFORTIFYING MASK. This mask incorporates a fortifyingCERAMIDE STRENGTH complex that increases the thicknessand strength of fine and devitalised hair.

This complex enhances the cohesion of the cuticle scales andpenetrates inside the hair to revolumise the fibre.

It has been shown that heat significantly increases the degreeof penetration of the active ingredient.

The end result is an increase in the hair's strength, resistanceand shine. Integral repair of the fibre.

what should you do beforebeginning a treatment?

Before beginning a treatment, there are five steps to take intoconsideration:

1) Diagnosis.2) Duration.3) In-Salon Treatment (therapy sessions).4) Home Treatment.5) Maintenance.

K-THERAPY ACTIVE

1) Diagnosis.

You should first make a diagnosis of the person to be treated. Most cases are men ho suffer from alopecia. In such cases wewould recommend carrying out a treatment twice a year, tryingto make sure that it coincides with the spring and autumn(April - May and October - November).

Then you find people who suffer from stress, poor diet, womenwho have recently given birth, problems of seborrhoea, etc.In cases such as those mentioned here, we recommend startingthe treatment right away.

2) Duration of the treatment: 6 to 9 weeks.

3) In-Salon Treatment (Therapy Active Session).

Recommended products:• Prevention Shampoo.• Fortifying Mask.• Shock Concentrate.

Cleanse the hair with Prevention Shampoo and massage.Repeat if necessary. Leave to act for a few minutes and rinse.Prevention Shampoo will leave the scalp ready for thesubsequent treatment.

Once you have rinsed and towel-dried the hair, apply FortifyingMask, spreading it all over the hair. Cover with a cap andapply heat or a hot towel. It is advisable to use heat withFortifying Mask, as this helps the Ceramide Strength complexto penetrate more deeply and reach the cortex. Heat enhancesits fibre-fortifying and thickening action. Exposure time, 10min.

Once you have rinsed off the mask and towel-dried the hair, apply an ampoule of Shock Concentrate, spreading it lineby line all over the scalp. Once this has been done, give thescalp an activating massage with your fingertips.

Activating massage.

The massage provides well-being and relaxation, as it allwaysdoes, but in addition there is a real treatment action, as itenergises the scalp. It simulates the circulation of the bloodat this level and also flavours the penetration of the products.

The combination of the massage and the sensory pleasure ofthe fragrances (notes of water, chords of geranium and orangeblossom) reinforces the effectiveness of the treatment.

• The first step is designed to stimulatethe circulation and enhance thepenetration of the active ingredients.Begin with both hands open and yourthumbs in the middle of the back ofthe neck. Start with circular move-ments upwards until you reach theforehead.

• Hold the person's head with one handbehind their neck and place yourother hand in the middle of theirforehead. Using all your fingertips, run this hand all over the head fromfront to back, finishing at the nape, opening and closing your hand asyou do so.

• Place both your closed hands in themiddle of the nape and make circularmotions with your knuckles workingyour way forwards over the ears andcovering the whole head.

• To finish, give small pinches all overthe head with your thumbs andforefingers.

It is recommended that the client be sitting comfortably andrelaxed in the chair. Once you have applied the ampoule ofShock Concentrate, start this massage.

It should last about 5 minutes.

DEHYDRATIONand devitalisation of hair

definition and causes

Alipia is a lack of oiliness in scalp and hair caused both byinternal disorders and aggression by external agents that alterits structure.

Among the causes that determine its appearance we find: adecrease in sebaceous gland activity, abnormal alterations ofthe hydrolipidic balance (water and oil), constant applicationof chemical perming and colouring processes, atmosphericagents, chlorine in pools and salt water and brushing hairwhen it is damp, this factors contribute towards damagingand drying out the hair fibre until it breaks and scales off, becoming dehydrated and lifeless.

The scalp becomes sensitive and easily irritated. Dry damagedhair looks porous, rough, dull, fragile and is difficult to style. It also has split ends.

For all these reasons, it is vital to treat both hair and scalpwith products that protect, moisturise, nourish and repair indepth, restoring an optimal state of beauty and health.

Repairing conditioners and masks have become essential inhair treatments as they improve appearance, texture, shineand manageability.

DANDRUFFdefinition and causes

Dandruff manifests itself as irregular scaling of the scalp’s mostsuperficial corneous layer.

The causes behind this malfunction can be several, but itgenerally arises due to an abnormal imbalance in the hairsbacterial flora. The presence of funghi in larger amounts thanusual causes alterations in the epidermal layer, triggering theproduction of excess corneous cells in the scalp. The excesscorneous cells slough off quickly as white flakes. They arewhat we know as dandruff.

Under normal conditions, there is an imperceptible scaling ofcorneous cells as part of a cycle that lasts approximately 28days. However, when this cycle changes, the cells startmultiplying quickly, even doubling in some cases.

The scalp gets irritated and becomes sensitive while hair startslooking dull and rough.

Whenever dandruff appears, it is always linked to a fungus(pityrosporum ovale). It is hard to determine if fungus is thecause or a consequence of dandruff. The truth is that anycosmetic treatment aimed at fighting dandruff must includean anti-fungal agent in its formula to regulate the bacterialflora (i.e. Octopirox™).

TYPES OF DANDRUFF

Common or Dry Dandruff.

Flakes are fine, pearly white, dry and come off easily.

Esteatoid or Oily Dandruff.

Flakes are larger and yellowish-white. They appear oily anddo not come off as easily. It is usually associated with notablealopecia processes.

SEBORRHEAdefinition and causes

Seborrhea is the excess production and secretion of fat bythe sebaceous glands.

There are between 400 and 900 sebaceous glands per squarecentimetre of skin. They produce and excrete the fat thatprotects hair. If hypertrophy, an increase in size, leads to anabnormal amount of sebum in the scalp we have a seborrheaproblem.

Of all the alterations the sebaceous gland can suffer, this oneprobably causes the most serious and unpleasant hair healthproblems. It must not be forgotten that sebaceousoverproduction can trigger an increase in skin flaking (oilydandruff) and possible excessive hair loss (seborrheic alopecia).

The malfunction has effects on two levels: the aestheticappearance of hair and physiologically on the scalp.

Hair looks sticky, matted, limp and gets dirty quickly as dustadheres to the oiliness. Styling and keeping a style becomesdifficult and lasts very little because sebum makes hair heavy. The scalp shows an increase of sweat secretions, redness insome areas and annoying irritation and itching.

The causes that originate this series of alterations are variedand include, among others, hereditary factors, sex, age, race, hormonal imbalance, organic disorders, even inappropriatediets, temporary nervous states, climate, etc.

Seborrhea can be treated occasionally and carefully withgentle products that normalise and regulate sebaceoussecretions to prevent the notorious “ rebound effect” frequentwashing and energetic de-lipidising caused by somedetergents can induce the sebaceous gland to actually increaseproduction and accumulate even larger amounts of fat on thescalp.

K-THERAPY PURIFYINGthe active range

Range specifically for greasy hair. It incorporates SEBARYL™,a molecule of proven effectiveness in regulating sebumcomplemented by the astringent properties of BAMBOO andBURDOCK extracts.

The formulations of the Purifying line incorporate arefreshing fragrance inspired by the search for freshness, purity and nature.

BURDOCK EXTRACT

The success of this medicinal plant dates from the MiddleAges. To make the extract, the roots of the plants are gatheredin the spring before they flower so they have a greaterproportion of active ingredients. Its leaves have a bactericidal, antiseptic and anti-seborrhoeic action, so their extract isspecially recommended for greasy scalps.

BAMBOO EXTRACT

Native to India, bamboo is considered one of the most beautifulplants on Earth. It can grow to a height of 40 metres. Bambooleaves have traditionally been used in India and Chile as ananti-inflammatory.

The leaves contain flavanoids with anti-oxidant properties thatact to neutralise free radicals. Bamboo also possesses antisepticproperties.

SEBARYL™

A biotechnological complex formulated with aminoacids, sulphurated peptides, liquorice extract and zinc salts.

The activity of the sebaceous gland is controlled by the sexualhormones, such as DHT (dihydrotestosterone).

Sebaryl™, a complex that regulates sebaceous secretion, actsenyzmatically to inhibit production of DHT. The liquoriceextract in it gives it anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been proven not to cause a rebound effect.

ABSORBENT CLAYS

Its natural clays absorb and regulate excess grease, producingan immediate mattifying effect on the scalp.

SENSITIVE SCALPdefinition and causes

More and more men and women suffer from a sensitive scalp.

The number of people with allergies and sensitive skin isgrowing year by year.

Whereas cleansing the hair too often with aggressive shampoosis the main cause of this in men, chemical treatments, changingcolour, decolouring, perms and so on are what causes mostdamage to women's scalp.

Other causes include the chlorine in swimming pool water, excessive heat from hair dryers, external aggressions, stress, poor diet, air conditioning and pollution.

The effects of all these phenomena build up and causealterations that irritate the scalp and upset its balance. Theresult are symptoms such as dryness, redness, erithematightness; in a word, permanent discomfort. To solve suchproblems, the scalp needs to be rebalanced, recover itsoptimum moisture level, its bacterial flora, its hydrolipic filmand its physiological pH.
