VOLUME 02 FALL/WINTER 2014 ISSUE NO. 01
In October, the LEACY Youth Project received a very special
invitation from the University of Davis, School of Education
Department. More about that in a moment! What was really great is
that with the support of the Napa Valley Unified School District we
were able to take this opportunity to take all of our students for
an all day College Tour field trip! It was quite
an eventful day. From leaving VHS at 9AM to arrival and an
inspiring presentation at the UC Davis Welcome Center by Dr. Blas
Guerrero. It was an engaging and inspiring presentation about
college access. We then took a 2 hour tour of the campus. We did
not tell the students that this was the biggest campus in
California, as we did some serious walking! (continued, pg. 2)

Of course a big highlight for the students was the "all you can
eat" cafeteria lunch and the arcade/bowling ally before our
presentation. Finally we made it to our last stop, the School
of
Education. As you can recal l , the initial reason for the trip
is that the LEGACY Youth P r o j e c t w a s i n v i t e d b y
Professor Rebecca Rosa, lead Social Studies professor at the School
of Education to present to her class titled "Cultural Diversity
in
Education." Part of her course curriculum is to bring in
concentric cultures within public schools that are often
misunderstood or where there is limited understanding. The goal is
to help pre-service teachers (graduate students earning credentials
to teach in grades 6-12) gain insights on some of the
issues, problems, possible solutions faced by adolescents as
culturally responsive educators. We presented to over 80 college
graduate pre-
service teachers! Our panel consisted of 4 current students, 1
alum and 2 coaches. While our students were nervous, their
confidence in their ability and purpose was evident while they
shared their stories a n d a n s w e r e d questions from the
graduate students. The rest of the LEGACY students sat in the
audience to support. However, once we were done presenting, some of
our other
students passed out the In Lak'ech poem (see page 4 for more
info.) and facilitated an entire close out with the unity clap that
we do each day in LEGACY. It was really inspiring! Each of our
student panelist received a letter of recommendation from Professor
Rosa with UC Davis letterhead! It was beautiful day!

OUR ALUMS: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?!?! Life After High School
When our youth founders came up with the name LEGACY, they
visioned what it meant to leave a legacy. An important value of the
LEGACY Youth Project is to continue to support our young men and
women after they have graduated high school. Today you can find our
alums/class of 2014 enrolled as college students at Napa Valley
College and Santa Rosa Junior College.
In addition, our founders/Class of 2014 have returned to the
LEGACY
Youth Project as guest speakers for o u r c u r r e n t
cohort/high school student members, s h a r i n g t h e i r
experiences, what l i f e a f t e r h i g h school is like and the
challenges and i m p o r t a n c e o f college life.
You can also find us having dinner, catching up and checking in
with each other. We are very proud of the continued legacy that our
founders a n d a l u m s a r e b u i l d i n g f o r themselves,
their families and our community.

Two major components to the LEGACY Youth Project is our Academic
