THE STOREHOUSE OF NATURE

The marvelous scenes of Lake Tisza and the

Tisza Valley that had remained hidden until

recently are now displayed on 4 floors over

2,600 sq.m, irrespective of the season and the

weather conditions. The main attraction is Eu-

ropes largest freshwater aquarium used simul-

taneously as Hungarys first water zoo designed

and built to display autochthonous species.

Both its dimensions and its complexitymakes this system of aquaria of more than 1million cubic metre capacity a unique facility.

Each locality along the shores of Lake Tisza has its harbourbut you should know, as well, that the most abounding natural

environment can be found in the middle and northern section

of the lake. The harbours of Lake Tisza can not be compared to

you should not miss visiting halszi Island and the northernareas of the lake. In this latter case, you can choose from two

optional routes. One of them crosses a several hectare fieldembellished with a thick carpet of fringed water-lilies and theexotic rowing path that crosses a forest along the Aponyhti

Canal. The other route runs along the perimeter of the area,passing along canals, watercourses and the River Tisza. In ad-dition to the route directions, the diversity of the trips depend

on the timing and the destinations to be visited. You can opt

to make photos of the hazy glimmer of water surfaces at dawnor the romantic sunset views or observing the evening bust-ling of beavers.

A PECULIAR FEATURE OF LAKE TISZA:

ISLANDS ABOUND

IN EVERY SIZE

You should not expect to see the scenery is-lands of the South Seas adventure moviesand they do not resemble Margaret Islandin Budapest, either. Some of them are toosmall to accommodate two people, whileothers are covered by awe-inspiring forestsinterlaced with tendrils of grape ivy. How-

ever, it is true almost in every case that theirshores tend to evanesce behind the curtainof reed-beds, thus they offer only a few butromantic mooring spots. The only exception

is provided by the coasts of the sluice-ways,which border the route of the roaming wa-ter-borne wanderer.

The halszi Island is the most peculiarof all the large islands. The one-time pros-perous fishing village had been destroyed byfloods of River Tisza squeezed between dykes

built in the second half of the 1800s ratherthan the formation of Lake Tisza. Today,a memorial site, a bird-watching tower anda labyrinth await tourists to this islandand the descendants of earlier inhabitantsliving in jlrincfalva preserve the memoryof Tiszahalsz.

People unfamiliar with Lake Tisza would

not presume that the numerous touristicattractions around the lake can also befound on islands, like our educational trails.

The natural landscape of Lake Tisza chang-

es continuously. Quite frequently, moorlands,

reed-beds and large clusters of bulrush deve-

lop from one year to the next. While there are

vast open water surfaces with no vege tation.

This makes tourism around and over the lake

a thrilling and romantic experience.

The most romantic island of Lake Tisza is Bulti

Island located on the lakes northern segment

and whose shape is characteristic to islands

developing in rivers. It is several hundred

metres long coupled with a mere 50 metre

in width. If you happen to pass by Sluice-way

No. IX, you should cast anchor for a short time

just opposite to the influx.

The Lake Tisza Water Trail and Educational Path can bereached from both Poroszl and the Lake Tisza EcoCenter.It is the longest and at present the most visited planked pathsystem is Hungary designed to exhibit the waterworld froma new perspective, by means of guaranteed guided trips. One

can walk above the water along the 1,500 metre long plankedpath system to reach birdwatching posts, resting islands andlookout towers. In addition, qualified tour guides and infor-mation signs make the 90 to 120-minute program a complete

experience.

The term educational trail got a new

meaning at Lake Tisza where the trail is not

a simple row of informative signs put down

The Mayfly Flood-Plain Promenade can be reachedfrom Tiszafred-rvny and, in addition to exhibiting theflora and fauna of the flood-plain forests, it demonstrates the

critical phase of the life of mayflies, one of the most peculiarcreatures of the fauna of River Tisza.

On the backwater of Tisza at Tiszafred a unique parkcan be found. The 18-hectare ground of the Robin Adven-ture Island has a 140-obstacle course including a zip wireline, a 15-meter high wall for hobby and competition climb-ing, 300-400 metre long rope-slides, forest gym course andplayground, minigolf, archery field, zorb, water kangaroo and

many other interesting games. The chain of adventures is

supplemented by two educational trails where one can getacquainted with the secret life of beavers or the birds livingin nests hidden in the foliage.

The approx. 4 metre high dykes of Lake Tisza

run around the lake crossing the boundaries

of 4 counties, acting as a continuous natural

lookout post for observing the peerless bea-

uty of this magical waterworld, Lake Tisza.

This is an exceptional route because the bicycle track runsaround the lake with practically no altitude difference and isclosed to public traffic. It is ideal for beginners, elderly people

and for families with small children. In addition to the excep-

Members of the Lake Tisza Tourism Centre Network lo-cated in almost every lakeside locality between Tiszajvrosand Karcag are glad to offer their assistance.

The most favoured route includes crossing the lake byriding on Highway No.33. Until the completion of a separate

cyclist track that is being built to increase safety of the riders,it is safe, comfortable and enjoyable to cross the lake by ferryoperated at Tiszadorogma, Tiszacsege, Nagykr and Tiszaroff

where restaurants, bars and buffets await tired cyclists.The very sight of the lake induces relaxation, but the re-

al pleasure comes when immersing in the water for refresh-ment and a coolling sensation.

Free beaches have been installed at six locations aroundLake Tisza. Each has its own exciting specialty or interesting

feature. Abdszalk is a classic place for the young who canenjoy their time at Tiszafred until late evening. At Kiskre,

the campsite co-operates with the local beach and turbo-slide park to offer numerous programs. Families may preferthe quieter beach of Poroszl where the bottom of the lakedeepens slowly. The popular summer camps for children are

considered a real paradise in Sarud, while Tiszanna devel-oped a romantic Dream Beach for people preferring quietseclusion.

ROUTES

Riding around Lake Tisza provides a specialexperience.

One should recognise, however, the mul-

titude of marvelous natural scenery, nation-

al parks, nature and landscape conservationregions and cheerful villages that are here tobe explored. The maps provided in the tourcentres suggest two types of routes for thecyclists. Either you ride along public roads of

moderately dense traffic, connecting smalllocalities to be discovered or, more frequent-ly, along dirt roads or the top of dikes forpeople wanting to discover real off-the-beat-en-track nature. We recommend these lat-ter routes only to experienced cyclists ridingtrek bicycles, in dry weather.

RIDING ON HORSEBACK ALONG THE SHORE,

FOR ROOKIES AND

FOR THE EXPERIENCED

In addition, we have several arguments to say

that horse riding really must be tried in thisenvironment.

There are only a few equestrian farms inthis region, but they offer ideal riding pro-grams for everyone, such as riding camps forchildren or lead riding for novice adults. One

thing is certain: anyone sufficiently experi-

enced for participating in a short ride shouldnot miss out on joining a lakeshore hoofwetting or a trip organised to discover thenearby marshlands. A trip like this gives you

the feeling of unrestricted freedom and youcan fall in love, for ever, with the steppe andthe shore of the lake.

In Hungary, there are not many options to take

part in riding trips in more remote parts of the

country. However at Lake Tisza, this is possible

and visitors can enjoy being part of exciting horse

riding events, which can not be experienced

in riding centres in the suburbs of big cities.

A trip like this gives you

the feeling of unrestricted

freedom and you can

fall in love, for ever,

with the steppe and

the shore of the lake.

Lake Tisza is contiguous

to Hortobgy, Europes largest

steppe. This fact, in itself,

is sufficient to remind us of the

possibilities for horse riding.

Advanced riders can ride on horsebackaround the lake. The 100 km route can easi-ly be covered in three days. Unlike the prog-rams offered at other places, here you canenjoy breaking into a gallop neck and neckwith eight to ten other horses, occupying the

greensward that stretche beside the dikes,crossing the river by ferry or taking a bathin the river.

We can feel the overlapping of vari-ous ages when the hoofs of our horses thudagainst the bridge of the Stepped Weir atKiskre, riding on Hungarys largest hydro-electric facility, while using one of the mostancient means of transport.

In connection with the organization of the

tour accomodation options include nomadiccampings or hotels of either quality categories.

The equestrian farms can be found around

the lake and among the members of the LakeTisza Tourism Centre Network, in Tiszafred,

Tiszarvny and Tiszaszls.

One can startle giant catfish lying in the mud of Tisza asdeep as 20 metres out of their early dawn slumber. One can

spin asps twirling in the water of the sluice-ways or can checkthe result of having thrown food in the water for feedingcommon carps near the edge of reed-beds or can try catch-ing some of the big tenches swarming in the lake.

Even young and novice fishermen can successfully catchsome of the billions of breams and that experience can en-thrall them to become fervent fans of this sport and to learnto restore their peace of mind this way. To remain on the safe

side, hire a local fishing guide in the ports.

Lake Tisza offers superior opportunities for making a good

catch, including during winter time because of the higher den-

sity of fish below the decreased water level and the presence of

countless pikes and walleyes of large size. Ice fishing is a spe-cial experience if you remembet to adhere to the safety rules.The ice-covered Lake Tisza offers beautiful landscapes but can
