The Chamber & Visitor Center

Location! Location! Location! The publication you are reading reflects the work we’ve been doing to unite the Kelso

Longview Chamber of Commerce with the Visitor Center – one stop shopping for visitors’ infor-

mational needs. The recently-erected building at 105 N Minor Road in Kelso now serves as our

home, too.

It made sense. Both venues provide visitors with information about the great things

there are to do and see in our area, why not save time and money by melding them into one

location? In the past, the Visitor Center has provided information to more than 12,000 people

each year. When Starbucks opened nearby we noticed about a 20 percent increase in the num-

ber of people coming into the Visitor Center on the weekends. I expect that number to grow

considerably with our newer, modern building and more visible signs. It would not surprise me

to see close to 20,000 people stop by in 2014.

For the past 30-plus years, the Visitor Center served mainly as a Volcano Center. The

new center will have a Mount St. Helens display area, since it is one of our biggest tourist draws;

however, the main function of the Visitor Center is to help our tourists see the value of our area

and direct them to our local events, businesses and treasures.

With help from the cities of of Longview and Kelso, Cowlitz County Tourism and the

Cowlitz Indian Tribe we’re decorating the Visitor Center with exciting graphics, art work and

photographs showing visitors why we love living in this

area. Just another reason why you should drop in on us,

say “Hi” and let us give you an insider’s perspective on

things to do, see, taste and try in this fabulous place

we call home!

The Chamber’s Education Foundation Committee develops, implements and supports programs that promote relationships between business and education. The Committee coordinates the Business and Education Awards each May, recognizing employer organi-zations and individuals that provide continuing education, including technology, for their employees. The event also recognizes excellence in education, specifically among teach-ers, administrators and support staff. Coordinating the Chamber’s Scholarship Program by setting criteria, selecting recipients and determining ways to help fund the program is also part of the Committee’s role, as is assisting in maintaining and strengthening the Chamber’s relationship with area education boards.

Longview

Longview is often called the Gateway to the Pacific. A small city of 36,000 it traces its roots back to founder R.A. Long, president of the Long-Bell Timber Company, who built a mill along the Columbia River and the city of Longview to accommodate its workers.

Rather than allow housing to spring up randomly, Long decided to build a city for the estimated 14,000 workers he would bring to the area to operate the mill. It is noted the city was completely planned down to the last sidewalk and the last street name before construction began allowing for designated areas for business, industrial and residential areas.

Longview was dedicated in July 1923. In February 1924, it was incorporated and a mu-nicipal government was established. Designed as a hub for business and travel routes, the town’s Civic Center features R. A. Long Park, Longview Public Library, the Monticello Hotel, and the post office and city hall.

Mr. Long’s influence and dedication to create a modern city to meet the needs of his em-ployees remain evident today, and a bronze statue of him wearing his traditional straw hat, as well as the name of a park and local high school, are a constant reminder of that vision decades later.

Today, Longview is the largest city in Cowlitz County with a strong economic base and a variety of recreational, educational and cultural offerings. Ideally situated on Interstate 5,

Longview is approximately 47 miles north of Portland and 135 miles south of Seattle, resting between the banks of the Columbia and Cowlitz rivers and just 90-minutes from the Pacific Ocean or the Cascade Mountains. And, even with its diminished size, Mount St. Helens still looms large in the area and can be easily seen from the city on a clear day.

Walk This Way for HistoryLace up your walking shoes and start your stroll through his-tory in downtown Longview. RA Long Park and Civic Center Circle go hand in hand. Originally named Jefferson Square and later named for the city founder, it is a National Register Historic District. The park was designed to be the center of the city. Its roads extend out from the circle with governmental and cultural anchors like the Monticello Hotel, Longview Public Library, and the United States Post Office. Each building showcasing its original architecture and character from the 1920s. Surprise! Surprise! Inside Civic Circle is a piece of Plymouth Rock, a sundial and a number of memorials. Don’t forget to check out the Chief Le-looska totem pole that welcomes visitors as well. A few blocks in any direction and there’s more to see like the Monticello Convention Site on Tennant Way where settlers petitioned Congress to separate from Oregon at the Columbia River forming the Washington Territory, later Washington State. Wander off between Kessler Boulevard and the Hotel Monticello toward the Old West Side to view English Tudor, Dutch Colonial and Spanish Revival homes designed by world-renown architects for the movers and shakers during the birth of Longview. Also on Kessler at Washington Way sits the grand Community Church, on the city’s historic register. Built in 1926, it resembles a Gothic revival castle right down to the gargoyles that keep watch from their perches and the beautiful stained glass.

That’s Nuts!Built in 1963 by local builder, the late Amos Peters, the Nutty Narrows Bridge is a lo-cal landmark and listed on the city’s historic register. Peters constructed the original struc-ture, which stretches across Olympia Way near Civic Center circle, to give squirrels a safe way to cross the busy thor-oughfare. The original 60-foot bridge was built from aluminum and fire hose. In 1983, the bridge was spruced up and rededicated. After Peters’ death, a 10-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in his memory. Recently, two more squirrel bridges have been installed above Kessler and Nichols boulevards. A fourth bridge is expected soon at the Longview Civic Center Circle.

Lake Sacajawea

Lake Sacajawea Longview’s crown jewelThe crown jewel of Longview, Lake Sacajawea Park is a respite for locals and visitors alike. Developed in 1924, Lake Sacajawea Park has had its share of ebb and flow, but to-day it serves as the centerpiece for the city, offering something for everyone. Those with an active lifestyle flock to it to walk, jog and bike on the 3.5 miles of trails which mean-der across landscaped bridges, through gardens with trees, flowers and rhododendrons and the lake’s two spectacular fountains. The park offers an arboretum, solar system walk and Japanese garden. There’s kayaking, fishing, canoeing and picnicking. Children or those young at heart can enjoy two playgrounds. There are concerts at the lake on sum-mer evenings. Relax during lunch time, bring a book or just watch the activities.

Gerhart Gardens ParkLocated one mile off Interstate 5, take Exit 36, Gerhart Gardens Park is easy to find and easy on the mind. After exiting, it’s the first turn off after crossing the Cowlitz River on Tennent Way. The river plays a key role in the park’s popularity. Soak in the beautiful scenery by boat, there’s a convenient launch, walk along the shore, or set up a picnic under a shady tree. Cast a line, either by land or water, both are quite acceptable. Need more action? The 14 acres also includes basketball courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts and a playground. And don’t forget Rover, let the pooch out of the car to stretch his legs too at the, fenced, off-leash dog park.

Roy Morse Sports ComplexSports enthusiasts can get their fill at Roy Morse Sports Complex where there are 60 acres of fields for baseball, softball and soccer, plus a

basketball hoop and playground. But wait, there’s more – additional fields can be found on the 29-acre 7th Avenue Park, Archie Ander-

son Park and John Null Park.

Willow Grove ParkJust five miles west of Longview is a mile of

sandy beach along the Columbia River and

Willow Grove Park. This is a popular location

to enjoy a number of outdoor activities. The

60-acre park features a mile long barrier-

free, asphalt walking trail, picnic areas with

barbecue pits, boat launch, a playground

and plenty of parking. With an emphasis

on safety, the park maintains a “life jacket

loaner” program. Willow Grove Park is a day-

use park open year round. It’s reported to be

a good spot to fly a kite, and did we men-

tion, rumor has it there’s a pirate festival that

takes place there.

Back on TrackIn 1997, John Chilson and Jeff Wilson be-gan restoring the Shay locomotive outside the Longview Public Library. It took the two volunteers and a host of others from ILWU Local No. 21 more than 2,000 hours to steam the 40-ton engine back to life. The Shay locomotive hauled timber from 1924 to 1956, when logging trucks became the preferred method of movement. The Long-Bell Lumber Co., which founded Longview in the 1920s, donated the locomotive to the city in 1956. Over time it became rusted and vandalized, but thanks to the volunteer effort and funding from businesses, grants and personal donations it has been restored and a pavilion to protect the precious piece of history is on its way.

Kelso

Known as the City of Friendly People, Kelso is a thriving and growing community of about 12,000 in the city and another 85,000 in Cowlitz County. Another 20,000 residents reside in Wahkiakum and south Lewis counties in Washington and Columbia County in Oregon, who are part of the Kelso com-munity.

Surveyor Peter Crawford named the city after his homeland in Kelso, Scotland. In honor, Kelso also has an official tartan and hosts the Highlander Festival each year.

The city’s Scottish heritage can also be found at Tam O’Shanter Park, which hosts the Highlander Festival each year. Kelso serves as base camp for Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and is also home to an airport serviced by charter flights and private jets.

Kelso is 48 miles north of Portland, Oregon, 125 miles south of Seattle and 80 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Its location and proximity to the Cowlitz, Coweeman and Columbia rivers also draw people to it for business, recreation and tourism.

Planes and TrainsKelso is the area’s transportation hub.

Conveniently located only a half mile to Interstate 5, the Southwest Washington Region-al Airport has 70 hangers and 46 tie down spaces. The airport started as a grass landing strip on a dairy farm, approxi-mately 109 acres of land that is now owned by the City of Kelso. In 1950 improvements were made and the landing strip became a paved runway. Then in the 1960s material

and labor were donated to build an admin-istration building. In 1980 there were major improvements on construction of a parallel taxiway and the reconstruction and realign-ment of the runway.

Downtown Kelso is also home to an Amtrak station. The Kelso Train Depot, origi-nally built around 1912 for the Pacific Northern Railroad, was renovated to become the region’s first multimodal transportation. Fancy words meaning it serves as a center for several

modes of transportation like passenger rail

and bus. Amtrak riders take note, there’s no

ticket office, but there is access to a Quik-Trak

kiosk on site and there is also short term and

long term parking.

Part of the “multi” modal transportation

service includes bus. Kelso is

served by Greyhound Bus Lines,

which provides bus service all

around the nation. RiverCities

Transit provides local service for Longview

and Kelso, check it out at rctransit.org

The year-round recreational opportuni-ties at Tam O’Shanter Park are endless with 38 acres of playgrounds, picnic areas, hiking paths and sports fields (baseball, softball and soccer). Located near Kelso High School and the Coweeman River, Tam O’Shanter has become a regional and national destination for tournament team sports, bringing thousands to compete at the complex each year at Rister Stadium for baseball, Heerensperger Field for softball, as well as the parks eight other fields, bas-ketball court, horseshoe pits, trail system that edges the river and 30 picnic areas.

Tam O’Shanter also welcomes clans and caber tossers as the host site for Kelso’s annual Highlander Festival.

Rister StadiumRister Stadium is located at Tam O’Shanter Park. The stadium is named after Stan Rister, a passionate volunteer with Cowlitz Little League and Kelso Babe Ruth Leagues. He was the father of Jolene McCaw, Seattle philanthropist who, along with her husband Bruce, made a major donation to the project. The completed 500-seat stadium inspired addi-tional local giving and in-kind support in addition to a Community Foundation grant for the project. Hall of Fame baseball player Reggie Jackson, Seattle Mariners players Jeremy Reed and Willie Bloomquist, and ex-M’s Dave Valle and Bret Boone were part of the dedi-cation ceremonies. The stadium is said to be on the short list for a future youth World Series event.

Heerensperger Girls Softball ComplexThe Heerensperger Girl’s Softball Complex is located at Tam O’Shanter Park. David Heerensperger, a successful businessman and Kelso native, once played Little League baseball at Tam O’Shanter Park and wanted to do something in memory of his mother. Through he and his wife Jill’s, and others’, generous donation Heerensperger Field was built and serves the local community, hosts numerous tournaments and is the home field for the Lower Columbia College Lady Red Devils softball squad. A sculpture at the field’s entrance named “A Mother’s Love” was a gift to David from his wife Jill of Heerensperger’s mother and a young ball player.

The Rose Center for the Arts at Lower Columbia College offers a full program of events and features a 500-seat auditorium considered the best hall for music performance in southwest Washington, rehearsal hall, art gallery, smaller theater, lecture hall and class-rooms. Fir and cherry wood paneling enhance the aesthetics and acoustics, along with state of the art variable acoustics, sound systems and lighting enhance the experience. The Columbia TheatreThe historic Columbia Theatre opened as a vaudeville venue and movie house in 1925. After years of decline, the theater escaped what would have been a tragic ending in 1980 when excavation and demolition equipment heading toward the theater was diverted to help with the cleanup following the Mount St. Helens eruption. In the inter-im, a group of visionaries saved and restored the historic building. Today, the vibrant 1,000-seat theater hosts musicals, concerts, comedy and children’s theatre. The theater earned a Historical Preservation Officers Award from Washington state for outstand-ing achievement in historic preservation.

The Broadway Gallery is a mecca for one-of-a-kind pieces representing a wide range of media – oil, watercolor, acrylics mixed media, photography, pottery, fused glass and jewelry. In addition to local creations, you will find dis-plays of work from England, Cuba and South America at The Broderick Gallery. Lord & Mc-Cord Art Works features a regular exhibit and also showcases textile art next door. Comple-menting its design work, Teaque’s Interiors also has art for viewing. Lower Columbia College’s art gallery is busting with regular exhibits, as are the halls and lobbies of many of the campus’ buildings.

Public ArtThe people of Longview are great art sup-porters and it’s evident in many community buildings and public places – in businesses like St. John Medical Center and the Mon-ticello Hotel, the city of Longview’s Parks and Recreation Building and City Hall, and at parks like Lake Sacajawea and RA Long.

MusicThe Longview-based Southwest Washington Symphony, Kelso’s Columbia River Chamber Orchestra, as well as Lower Columbia Col-lege’s many bands and vocal ensembles provide a variety of concerts throughout the year. The Longview-Kelso Community Concert Association, returns with endowment sup-port and a new home for its 2014-15 five-concert series, the Wollenberg Auditorium in the Rose Center for the Arts on the Lower Columbia College campus.

Longview Outdoor GalleryThe two-year rotating gallery of sculptures is supported entirely by local patrons, donors and businesses. The first exhibit, 11 sculptures, went up in 2011. The second exhibit was installed last year. The next exhibit is scheduled for 2015. Art is on display outside between Hemlock and Maple Avenues. For more information, go to longviewlog.org

FL-ASHY MOVEThree Rivers lures a crowd during wet weather. Why? Because it is built on a base of silt and sand from the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, which makes it drain well.

FRESH IDEAMint Valley draws its name from the 130 acres of mint fields that once stood where todays greens are located.

Two years after the 1980 eruption, Mount St. Helens was left to recover naturally and the National Volcanic Monument was created for research, recreation and education. Decades later the gray, barren landscape flourishes and visitors can spend days hiking, studying at visitor centers and enjoying the scenery.

Go Fourth FestivalLongview’s Go Fourth Festival is the largest annual, family-oriented festival in the greater Cowlitz County area, celebrating the nation’s independence over three days – July 2-4 at Lake Sacajawea. Started in the 1960s and still going strong, the festival’s activities include a Timbersport competi-tion, entertainment, cardboard boat regatta, arts and craft booths, parade, food and culminates with a spectacular fireworks display. It takes a small army of volunteers and sponsors to make the event happen each year, all working under the nonprofit umbrella of the Go Fourth Festival Association. For a schedule of events go to www.gofourthfestival.org

Highlander FestivalThe City of Kelso honors its roots each year with Scottish and Celtic culture, clan displays, games and events at the Highlander Festival. Tam O’Shanter Park serves as the backdrop for the festivities, which include a fun run/walk, Highland Dance Competition, Highland Games and Piping Competition and a Parade of Clans. The weekend, this year Sept. 13-14, also includes the Avenue of Clans, Scottish craft and food vendors, Scottish music and competitions, Scottish Shortbread Competi-tion, the Kilted Klassic Golf Tournament and the Kirkin O’ The Tartan Sunday morning. CROWD PLEASERThe Go Forth Festival draws more than 30,000 people and boosts an average annual growth rate of 12 percent in the past five years.

KIRKIN’ O’ TARTANThe ceremony is based on Scottish history and legend following the defeat of the Scots by the English in the Battle of Culloden they were forbidden to wear the kilt, plaid or any other tartan garment. This prompted the Scots to secretly carry with them a piece of their tartan as they went to the Kirk (church). The minister would slip a blessing (a Kirkin’) into the service for the tartans.

GO NUTS!Visit the Squirrel Fest website, lvsquirrelfest.com, and you can see the Bruce Kamp Memorial Squirrel Bridge as a squirrel sees it through your own eyes. With some help from Cascade Networks, a camera lets you watch the squirrels romp across.

Squirrel FestFUN! That sums up Longview’s Squirrel Fest in a nutshell. Dreamed up by a local group called The Sandbaggers, the premise behind the festival was fun for all ages. Growing attendance, more shows from great local musicians and children’s entertainers, a lot of red and white stripes, a giant squirrel, food and a lengthy list of nutty activities make it a fun day for the entire family. Ape Cave Lava TubesThe kids will go ape over these lava tubes. Formed about 2,000 years ago from a volcanic eruption, Ape Cave is the longest known lava tube in the continental United States, 12,810 feet. The operative word here is cave, please wear sturdy shoes, bring a jacket and carry a flashlight. Opt for either the easier route or head uphill for the longer adventure, a mile-plus climb over large boulders. Infor-mation, lantern rentals and guided tours are available at the Ape Cave headquarters from mid June through Labor Day.

Other OutingsThere’s always hiking, biking and fishing for outdoor adventure, but have you tried geocaching? It’s a treasure hunt using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Speaking of hidden treasure, why not spend the day prospecting. Take a chance at striking it rich by panning for gold in a local river and creek. Many in the area have varying amounts of gold, platinum, and other minerals. Bob’s Sporting Goods in Longview can outfit you with the basics. Like most things, there are rules and regulations, please do your research before heading out. Zippity-do-da – try a zip line. Zip lines are a pulley suspended on a cable that zip you from the top of a hill to the bottom. Treehouse Island Zip Line Adventures http://www.thetreehouseisland.com Mount St. Helens is a popular climb for both beginning and experienced moun-taineers. Although people are able to climb Mount St. Helens year-round, late spring through early fall is the most popular season. Climbers must have a permit. It is recommended that reservations be made well in advance. For information visit Mount St. Helens Institute, www.mshinstitute.org

And...Falling under the category things you can’t see, but sure are interesting are the Oregon Primate Rescue Sanctuary and Big Foot. The Oregon Primate Rescue Sanctuary is located on 28 acres of land in Longview and serves as a place of rest and peace for, well, primates. That’s why its not open to the public, but definitely worth noting. The latest sasquatch, a.k.a. Big Foot, sighting in this area recorded on the Big Foot Research Organization website is 2009. Interested in how many there have been and where, check out the map and information at www.visitmtsthelens.com

Thunder Mountain Pro Rodeo Bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, team roping, tie down roping, steer wrestling, break away roping, barrel racing, and bull riding –whew! That’s a whole lot of excitement and enter-tainment in one arena, but that’s what you’ll find at Thunder Mountain Pro Rodeo July 25-26. CAMPINGThere are dozens of places in the area to pitch a tent or pull in an RV in the Cowlitz, Pacific, Wahkiakum, Lewis, Clark and Skamania county areas. But three are very close to Longview and Kelso. County Line Park on Ocean Beach Highway, just west of Longview, is one, with 5.5 acres on the Columbia River. In Kel-so, both not far from I-5, try Brook-hollow RV Park and Cedars RV Park. Brookhollow is on Allen Street and despite it’s location, the park is in a quiet area. Cedars RV Park is also just off I-5 on Beauvais Road. It’s more intimate, but has all the amenitites of the larger facilities.

Go Fish

The Columbia River and other local tributaries and lakes offer numerous opportunities for anglers. If you’re a fisherman, Southwest Washington is paradise, with streams, rivers and lakes holding a staggering array of fish stocks. No matter the time of year, there’s always a fish biting somewhere. The Cowlitz, Lewis, Toutle and Kalama rivers are among the most revered steelhead streams in the Northwest. The Columbia offers reliable salmon and sturgeon runs. Try your luck with kokanee at Yale Reservoir, tiger muskies and coho at Merwin Reservoir, and rainbow trout at Swift Reservoir. Silver Lake delivers excellent fishing for large mouth bass and is also a great spot to go after perch, bluegill and crappie. Department of fish and wildlife plants rainbow and brown trout in Lake Sacajawea in the spring and early summer. Lake Sacajawea, historically known as Fowlers Slough, is located in a 67-acre park in the middle of the city of Longview. It is a former channel of the Cowlitz River that was dredged in 1924. Silver Lake has bass. Best in spring but open year around. Crappie, bluegill, catfish and perch. Rainbow trout are planted in the spring. This lake also provides good fishing for yellow perch, bluegill sunfish, brown bullhead, and both black crappie and white crappie. Check the Fishing in Washington regulations pamphlet for limits and size requirements. Need more information, drop by Bob’s Sporting Goods or log on to the state website at www.wdfw.wa.gov
