year to plan together, to have 5 year plans that support and
coincide with each other and look down the road to keep good things going. Part of the plan is to learn what works and duplicate that as well as learn what doesn’t work and don’t
do it again. I also challenge you to
participate in as many activ-ities as you can at the Temple.
Participation and attendance is kind of like voting for public offices. Each of us has an opportunity to vote and we have a right to be able to do all the things our nation offers to us. It is the same at the Shrine---be there and know what is happening. If you don’t come you will not know what is happening and planned for YOUR organization. I plan on participating for many years to come so I know all the good things Kerbela is doing. I look forward to seeing all of you right there along side myself---forever being an active Kerbela Shriner. I love each and every one of you.
May God Bless America, May God Bless Kerbela,
May God Bless Shriners Hospitals for Children, and May God Bless You.

The glorious and never to be forgotten year of 2017 is rap-idly drawing to a close. I will never forget it or forget any one of you. Nor will I forget the good times, the hard work, the best friends, the privilege of serving the Children. I will certainly never forget the honor of being your Potentate. You trusted me to be your leader for this year and to do what I could for our Fraternity and do what I could for our Philanthropy. All of YOU have been the ones who made this year a success for you and for those we serve. I knew before I was elected that it was the ef-forts of all of you, not me, that would make it work. You have worked hard to do the things that Kerbela is known for throughout the realm of Shrinedom. You are simply the best and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. But we are not done by any means. December 31 is only the start. We still have a lifetime to do even more to cel-ebrate our success and our friendship. We still have time to continue our efforts to show worthy Brothers just how much fun we have being Shriners serving kids. I do not believe a man can resist joining us once he visits a hospital or meets a Poster Child. This is not the end of a year, but rather the start of even more chances to set goals and answer opportunities. We need to make our projects and goals one continuous effort from year to year. I implore each of you to not slow down a bit. Instead work continuously and seamlessly to keep our Fraternity and Temple alive and thriving into the future. Your Divan has worked this

Greetings Nobles and Ladies I am in hopes that this correspon-dence finds you warm and well. I think we may be seeing Ole Man Winter move in to stay for a while. It is hard to be-lieve that December is here and another year is coming to a close. December brings many activities for the Nobles of Kerbela with many Christmas parties, parades, and celebrations, all glorifying the most important event, the birth of our Savior which is truly the reason for the season. It has been a busy year for Kerbela and the Nobles. The Temple has seen many improvements with the building of some new rooms, the brick paving project, landscaping, and the paint/lighting project. Nobles, most all of this was completed by the members during the Temple work days. This speaks well of the Nobles support and commitment to make Kerbela #1. 2018 is just around the corner and will bring us many more opportunities to increase membership into our great fraternity. New members bring new ideas, financial support, networking opportunities, friendships and most importantly support for the World’s Greatest Philanthropy, “Shriners Hospitals for Children.” Nobles, please continue to seek out new members in your lodges and any other social settings that you may be a part of.

Kerbela PatrolGreetings to everyone from Kerbela Patrol. I hope this article finds you doing well. We had a great time at the circus; we sure did miss you if you were not there. We are fast approaching the end of the year and with that comes the election of officers for the Patrol. Mike Smith will remain as your captain, Carl Boling is 1st LT, and Barry Trainor, PP will be Secretary/Treasurer for 2018. The Patrol participated in the Shrine Circus at Thompson Boling Arena, we paraded in our jeeps and manned the tickets; and I wish to give a BIG THANK YOU for all who worked so hard. December brings Hanukkah and Christmas and that means there will be a lot of different parades to participate in. We are looking forward to these and do hope you will try and make as many Christmas Parades as possible. It’s a blessing to watch everyone cheer us on. If you would like to join an active group give us a try. Our meetings are on the first Tuesday of the month at the Temple at 7pm. If anyone needs help repairing your jeep, I’ll be happy to help, give ma a call (865) 256-4831. Happy Birthday and/or Happy An-niversary to all Nobles and Ladies that have one in the month of December. May the warm tidings of the season bring wonderful peace and joy with God’s love to everyone.

Kerbela Go-Karts The Go-Kart Unit turned out in force for the 2017 Circus at Thompson-Boling arena in October. We had a blast getting those kids on and off the ponies and sell-ing ride tickets as well. As is custom, the Unit held a brief meeting and elected the 2018 officers. Dallas Rapier was elected Captain, Howard Farrington, 1ST. Lieu-tenant and Wayne Rivers, 2nd. Lieuten-ant. The ever faithful T.G. Ramsey was elected to serve as Secretary/Treasurer for another year.
Our returning Drill Captain Wayne Rivers promised to get the Unit in top shape for the upcoming schedule of parades. During the show, our 2017 Captain, Randall Martin, learned that his brother, Charles Martin had passed. We sin-cerely regret his passing and wish the Martin family our deepest sympathy.
Respectfully submitted,Howard Farrington

Legion of Honor The LOH is needing more members and we have a very special deal. It has been decided that for any eligible Shrine veteran that wants to become a LOH member is now very easy to do. If any eligible veteran who joins right now only pays the initiation fee of $10 and will not pay any dues until 2019. We have many uniforms available for new members which can be bought for a very reasonable price. Under the upcoming changes the uniform cost will be addressed. Right now the youngest LOH mem-ber is 53 and the oldest is 92. We only have one or two that carry a flag or rifle in a parade; the rest have to ride the trailer. At one time we had enough
members that we could carry the four national flags, two rifles and the five service flags. Since then we have lost several members or those that used to march can no longer do it due to health problems (bad hips, knees, etc.) You do not have to be in uniform to participate in parades (riding the trailer can be done in regular clothes) and we can get quite a few on the trailer. We are in a desperate need for new young Shriners who have served in any of the branches of our military and have a “honorable” discharge on their DD214. I know we have young men who have served duty during Iraq, Afghanistan and in peacetime. We are a proud unit with a pride in our past service to our country. We have pride for Kerbela and Shrinedom in general and what we do
for Shriners Hospitals for Children. I have heard it said that we parade so the children can have a fuller life. It is such a heart-warming feeling to be leading a parade and when you pass by people and they say; “Thank you for your service.” It is also gratify-ing to see the many veterans watching a parade who always stand and salute as the Colors pass; knowing that their chest swells with pride and the little children who also watch them and also salute (sometimes with the wrong hand, but it is the gesture and dedication that count.) If you have served honorably in the military and would like to become a member of the Legion of Honor call me at: 865-992-2922 or 865-591-4392.

Kerbela Corvette Unit I think everyone will agree that No-vember has started the parade season off with a bang. The Corvettes began the season by participating in the UT Home-coming parade. We managed to finish and get loaded up before the rain came. Of course, since it was on a Friday, we followed the parade up by having dinner together. Veteran’s Day kept the parade units busy parading in Clinton and then moving on to LaFollette. I sure hope we all took time to thank a Veteran for his service to our country. Thanksgiving is going to be here and gone and “some of us” are already busy Christmas shopping. As you know, stores have had Christmas decorations up since before Halloween. The first Christmas parade of the year was NewTazewell (this article is being written prior to the parade but we are hopeful that Kerbela will be well represented). It is always a fun parade. As you know December is packed with parades that will keep us all running and having fun. The December calendar is packed so be sure to check your Knews so you won’t miss out on any of the fun. Of
course December events start with the Ceremonial and the Christmas dinner and dance then the Election. I think most units have their own Christmas dinners and there are also Christmas parties for the children, and of course, don’t forget all the parades – there are a lot of them. The parades are fun and the communities put a lot of work into planning them. Most of all, the kids love them, and that is an easy way for us to
repay the communities for their support during the Paper Sale. During this season, take a minute to look at the list of Sick and Shut-Ins in our Kerbela Knews. Chances are, you will know some of them. Keep them and their families in your prayers and maybe even take 30 minutes out of your busy day to go by and visit with them.
Hope to see you at the parades.Carl Huckaby

evaluation of potential candidates by the voting members.1. He should have good business
judgment.2. He should have the ability to
express himself clearly, in lan-guage that will make us proud of him, rather than apologetic.
3. He should present an imposing personal appearance.
4 He should be able to hold his own and advance the interest of his Temple and Freemasonry, in high places as well as among the humble.
5. He should be a devoted Mason, and constantly promote the in-terest of Freemasonry, in high places as well as among the humble.
6. He should be proud, yet humble.7. He should have good character
and a past open to investigation.8. He should be a leader, have
good standing in his commu-nity, and be influential in its affairs.
9. He should be financially secure.10. He should be in good health, full
of energy and vitality.11. He should be able to devote
ample time to his Shrine duties.12. He should be a man who, when
he appears anywhere in public, you will be proud of, not apolo-getic for his short comings.
13. His wife should be able to un-derstand his devotion to duty; realize that he will become a Potentate and not she; be able to dress and wear appropriate clothing, and be familiar with the social amenities. Remem-ber, she is destine to become first Lady.
Nominations for Oriental Guide should be based upon thorough and ac-curate evaluation of character, ability and interest. Remember, you are electing your spokesman and standard bearer, the one who will represent you and your Temple. We have great talent in our Temple. Let us seek out the best man we can find who is willing to make the sacrifice. And it requires great sacrifice! Many Temples have suffered from inferior Potentates because of hasty judgment and oversight of qualifications when selecting Oriental Guides.
When the members of a Shrine Temple elect a Noble to the office of Oriental Guide, they are virtually start-ing that Noble through the Divan line on the assumption that he will prove quali-fied for and worthy of advancement to the high office of Illustrious Potentate. Hence, it is quite evident that the nomination for Oriental Guide should be based upon thorough and accurate evaluation of character, ability, prestige, interest and experience. A Noble can be a good fellow, a hard worker, and a loyal Shriner...and yet lack the basic qualifications which make a good Potentate. Unless a Noble is fully qualified for the job, he is unfair both to himself and his Temple in seeking the office or in permitting his fellow Nobles to support and promote his candidacy. Each Shrine Temple needs and requires able, quality leadership. The normal starting point of that leadership is the office of Oriental Guide The fol-lowing check list may prove helpful in evaluating potential candidates for the office of Oriental Guide. However, no thinking man would be naive or pre-sumptuous as to believe that any one Noble could possibly embody all of the virtues, talents, and qualifications which are set forth in this check list. Never-theless, the list has practical value...for self-evaluation by the Noble whose ultimate aspiration is the office of Il-lustrious Potentate...and for the advance

Daughters of the NileAbdiel Temple No. 147Fellow Officers, Past Queens and Ladies of the household; I hope this finds you doing well. Please lets remember Pr. Jennifer Doane’s family in your prayers and thoughts. It was a shock to them and they are taking it hard. Thank you to everyone that showed your Nile love in their time of need. The Queen’s Ball was a good time for the ones that showed up. The band was great and or own PQ Sherry was on stage with them singing. (Queen’s son and mother-in-law had a great time on the dance floor.) December 14th we are having our Holiday Party and Potluck. Bring a covered dish, gift cards for hospital and a $10-$15 gift to exchange. Hope to see you there. 6:30pm at the Temple.Remember our Temple is Dark so no stated meeting. Kerbela Cabiri The Past Potentates continue to press forward with their unit. We elected Ill Sir Burkett as our new President and finished our room. We would not have been successful without the aid of many Nobles at the Temple Work Day. In addition to moving the Director Staff’s equipment from the trailer, we still found time to furnish the Cabiri Room and put our bricks in the front of the Temple. If you have not purchased a brick, there is no better way to honor someone that to have a brick placed at the Temple. Please do not forget the Ceremonial on December 2nd, and we could still use a few more candidates. The Divan has done a marvelous job in arranging for a one-time $100.00 petition for the Shrine. All of us should take advantage of this and encourage a Mason to join. Pray for our service members and pray for our country.
