get excited about the crowds, long lines, limited parking,

and aggressive behaviors, we turn to other passions to occupy our time - sports, movies, golf, hunting, etc. One passion which I have observed which is reflected in our mem-bership is the increased

involvement in the efforts of our Temple in pursuing

our work.Well, Mother Nature

was in control of the weather again this year which resulted in the cancella-tion of SASA. the fury of the wind and rain was felt across many states and the recovery efforts will take a long time. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected.

The Circus held on October is our major fund raiser for the year. Although we don't have the final tally, it appears it was highly successful. THANKS to everyone who contributed in any way toward this effort as your participation is imperative in making this happen.

Illustrious Sir Bobby Vann and his committee provided another fun and exciting night with the Halloween Party. As usual, the kids were the benefactors of food-fun-frights-fellowship. Great Job!

I close by calling your attention to four scheduled calendar events:

Greetings Nobles and Ladies: November bring several events that many look for-ward to. On Nov. 4, we regain the hour we lost as we reset our clocks to end Daylight Savings Time. So, if you haven't had enough time to adjust to the loss of that hour, hopefully you will adjust when we fall back. Just prepare for shorter daylight hours. The next event we observe in November is Veterans' Day. Monday, Nov. 12, will be celebrated as a time to honor and thank those who are serving or have served in the military and are still with us. I encourage you to show a veteran your appreciation by attending a parade, visiting a VA hospital, and/or displaying our flag. We are truly thankful for their service. Let's let them know it! Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks for the family we love, the friends we cherish, and the blessings we have received. It is especially a time for me to express my appreciation for you. I really appreciate your hard work, high standards, persistence, and support in our efforts. I sincerely hope that as you spend this time with those close to you it helps you to make sense of the past, brings peace for the present, and creates a vision for tomorrow. Then, the day after Thanksgiving, it's READY-SET-GO! Black Friday! Even though some stores attempt to get a head start on shopping for the begin-ning of the holiday season, most people rise early on Friday morning to venture out hoping to find that "special" deal on merchandise. Some people can't imag-ine being anywhere else except in the shopping malls. While some of us can't

Nobles and Ladies,I hope this cor-

respondence finds you all well. It looks as though our fall weather may be here to stay and with that comes the beauti-ful fall colors and brings us close to the Holiday season. Once again, our Circus has come and gone and as usual it was a HUGE success. MANY, MANY THANKS to all of the Nobles and La-dies who come out to help and support the Circus. This could not happen with-out each and every one of you.

Now is that time of year and we be-gin the holiday season with a full agenda of parties, parades, and may festivities that lend us the opportunity to get NEW nobles to join the greatest fraternity in the world. Talk to your brothers at your lodge, work, church or any event to which you gather and simply ask them to join our brotherhood. You may be surprised with your efforts. New nobles bring new abilities, ideas, manpower, finances, enthusiasm, and support for units, clubs, the Temple, but most impor-tantly the world’s greatest philanthropy, “Shriners Hospitals for Children.”

Membership renewal forms have been mailed from Imperial so please check your card out and ensure you are current.

evaluation of potential candidates by the voting members.1. He should have good business

judgment.2. He should have the ability to

express himself clearly, in lan-guage that will make us proud of him, rather than apologetic.

3. He should present an imposing personal appearance.

4 He should be able to hold his own and advance the interest of his Temple and Freemasonry, in high places as well as among the humble.

5. He should be a devoted Mason, and constantly promote the in-terest of Freemasonry, in high places as well as among the humble.

6. He should be proud, yet humble.7. He should have good character

and a past open to investigation.8. He should be a leader, have

good standing in his commu-nity, and be influential in its affairs.

9. He should be financially secure.10. He should be in good health, full

of energy and vitality.11. He should be able to devote

ample time to his Shrine duties.12. He should be a man who, when

he appears anywhere in public, you will be proud of, not apolo-getic for his short comings.

13. His wife should be able to un-derstand his devotion to duty; realize that he will become a Potentate and not she; be able to dress and wear appropriate clothing, and be familiar with the social amenities. Remem-ber, she is destine to become first Lady.

Nominations for Oriental Guide should be based upon thorough and ac-curate evaluation of character, ability and interest. Remember, you are electing your spokesman and standard bearer, the one who will represent you and your Temple. We have great talent in our Temple. Let us seek out the best man we can find who is willing to make the sacrifice. And it requires great sacrifice! Many Temples have suffered from inferior Potentates because of hasty judgment and oversight of qualifications when selecting Oriental Guides.

When the members of a Shrine Temple elect a Noble to the office of Oriental Guide, they are virtually start-ing that Noble through the Divan line on the assumption that he will prove quali-fied for and worthy of advancement to the high office of Illustrious Potentate. Hence, it is quite evident that the nomination for Oriental Guide should be based upon thorough and accurate evaluation of character, ability, prestige, interest and experience. A Noble can be a good fellow, a hard worker, and a loyal Shriner...and yet lack the basic qualifications which make a good Potentate. Unless a Noble is fully qualified for the job, he is unfair both to himself and his Temple in seeking the office or in permitting his fellow Nobles to support and promote his candidacy. Each Shrine Temple needs and requires able, quality leadership. The normal starting point of that leadership is the office of Oriental Guide The fol-lowing check list may prove helpful in evaluating potential candidates for the office of Oriental Guide. However, no thinking man would be naive or pre-sumptuous as to believe that any one Noble could possibly embody all of the virtues, talents, and qualifications which are set forth in this check list. Never-theless, the list has practical value...for self-evaluation by the Noble whose ultimate aspiration is the office of Il-lustrious Potentate...and for the advance

Kerbela EngineersOn July 28th and July 29th, the Ker-

bela Engineers took Elmo The Train to the Grainger County Tomato Festival to give train rides to all wanting to ride. Lots of children enjoyed riding Elmo, and the Engineers had a blast seeing all the smiling faces. This year at the festival we did a special drawing for a boy’s and a girl’s bicycle. We had 100 boy’s sign up, and 99 girl’s signed up for a chance to win this special prize. The prize’s consisted of $100.00 gift cards donated by our friends from Walmart.

We held the drawing on Sunday at 3:30pm, and two winners were chosen at random. President Couch drew for the boy’s and Treasurer Sheffield drew for the girl’s. Lane Hall won the boy’s bicycle, while Mila Merritt won the girl’s bicycle. Each were presented with their gift card and went to Walmart to pick out a bicycle.

We at the Engineers would like to say special thanks to our friends at the Grainger County Tomato Festival for having us again this year, and to Walmart for donating the gift cards for the bicycles.the bicycles.

SASA was a bust thanks to the un-invited hurricane, prayers to all those affected by that terrible storm.

The dog days of summer stayed longer than we wanted them to and will be around for a bit longer. However, that heat didn’t stop the unit from exploring the great state of Tennessee. The Motor-cycle Unit took a trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway, a day trip on the Cherohala and a day trip to Murphy, NC we have the best times! We want to see you on our next trip.

Think Membership - our next Ker-bela Ceremonial is Saturday, December 1st and we have a goal to create 75 new Nobles this year - WE can achieve this goal, get those petitions!

Kerbela Chaplain“ Believe in something or fall for anything”, I first heard this phrase from a priest at a chapel where we were sta-tioned. This brings to mind the impor-tance of our moral and masonic values that keep us rooted and upright.

Properly grounded or rooted lives will not be moved. We are all aware of a deep-rooted plant, the acacia. Because of its environment its roots go deep be-low the surface to obtain life-supporting water and nourishment. We also know that the ungrounded sprig, lacking roots, is easily plucked, plundered and ulti-mately destroyed.

This is a lesson for our lives for if it is deep-rooted, built on the founda-tion from that first lecture, that sustains our spiritual and moral lives. We must have deep-rooted beliefs and values, not superficial surface ideals to sustain us or we wither away. “Believe in something or fall for anything.

MembershipGreetings Nobles,

Our Fall Ceremonial will be held on Saturday, December 1st at Kerbela Temple. Howard Farrington and Illustri-ous Sir Bart Iddins along with the cast have been working hard to perform an outstanding degree.

At a very recent stated meeting we voted to support a resolution that shows our commitment to membership this resolution focuses on the three R’s of membership: Recruitment, Retention and Restoration. Here’s how each of us can help in these areas:

Recruitment: Have you asked your fellow Mason if he wishes to join the Shrine? Have you spoken to his lady about what they can gain by being a member? Have you asked non-Masons your friends, neighbors, colleagues if they would be interested?

Retention: Once a member how do we keep them engaged? Have you been a top line signer and if so after the cer-emonial did you invite your candidate and their lady to Unit Night, your local Shrine Club; what about the new Noble to a stated meeting, or did you leave them alone? If you left them alone have you seen your candidate since they were initiated? Do you know a Shriner who has let his dues lapse due to unforeseeable cir-cumstances, have you brought that to the attention of our Recorder, so they could be remitted? Restoration: Do you know of a Shriner who left our organization and has mentioned about coming back? Did you encourage them? Did you give them the phone number to the Temple? Membership in my opinion can be summed up on one word: Relationship! By having a relationship with others, we are able to recruit, retain and restore. Let’s focus on all of these areas be-tween now and the end of the year.

“Beef Jerky Outlet on The Island” collects $6500 for Shriner’s Children’s Hospital

The Beef Jerky Outlet on The Island in Pigeon Forge has been collecting money for the Shriner’s Children’s Hos-pitals over the past 3 years. But, for the past year, owner Bruce Parker changed things up slightly. He started asking for a dollar donation in exchange for a Beef Jerky Outlet P.E.T.A. (People Eating Tasty Animals) sticker. Contributions soared to the point that he had to empty the Shriner donation box every week so others could get money in the slot.

Parker said, “Our business buys the bumper stickers, keeping a stack at the

register. Customers love them and they also love supporting the Shriner’s Chil-dren’s Hospitals. These hospitals help so many kids.” Parker, a Mason and Shriner himself, just contributed those proceeds, $6500 this time, to his local Great Smoky Mountain Shrine Club that will go directly to help in all aspects of the child’s transportation and treatment. “If we can keep getting this amount of money for these kids, I will keep this going forever. People that visit us here are wonderful”.

When a child becomes a patient at a Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, the fam-ily pays nothing for the services, food or lodging accommodations. Volunteer Shriner’s transport the children and fam-ilies back and forth from Sevier County to the hospitals, usually in Lexington, KY, Greenville, SC or Cincinnati, OH.

In Memoriam

“Es Selamu Aleikum”Life is a story in volumes three the past the present the yet to be.The first we’ve written and laid away. The second we’re reading day by day.The third and last of the volumes three..Is locked from our sight and God keepeth the key.
