  • Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

    January 13, 2019

Christ’s One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church – Part 2 The Apostles were nothing more than group of fisherman who had no training in public speaking or ministry or even church planting, all of which they would eventually do. Christ is present with them and in them. He accomplishes His will through them. And so we see from the very beginning that the Church is all about cooperation between us and God, and with each other. The Apostles were sent out to do their missionary work equipped with nothing but walking sticks and sandals. They must have been fed. They must have found places to sleep, to rest. Some of the people they met welcomed them into their homes and fed them and gave them a bed for the night. Others didn’t. Wherever the disciples were met with rejection, they were instructed by Jesus to shake the dust off their feet in testimony against those people. That may sound odd to us, but to the Jewish people, land was a precious thing. It was a gift from God after all. He gave them the promised land. They belonged to that land as much as it belonged to them. That’s partly why the Babylonian exile was so hard on them. They were taken away from their Temple, their King and their land. When the Apostles shook the dust from their feet as they left a place where they were not welcomed, where the Gospel was rejected, it was a sign to the people in that place were not part of the nation of Israel. From the Apostles, obediently following the Lord’s instructions, we get the Church and the sacraments. We get the Body and Blood of Christ through them, in the priesthood and the Holy Eucharist. Those people who welcomed and accepted the Apostles, who listened to them and repented and came to believe in Christ, those who were healed by them – those people remembered the Apostles. And when Jesus was crucified and then was risen, when Pentecost came, the Apostles went out again and planted churches, and Christianity grew. And here we are today. Mark’s message to us is not self-reliance, but total dependence on the Lord. He who created out of nothing can provide for all our needs, either directly, or through others. But especially, the Lord provides the thing we need most: His love, forgiveness and salvation. Amen. BlessingsBlessingsBlessingsBlessings In Jesus,In Jesus,In Jesus,In Jesus, Fr. DavidFr. DavidFr.

  • On the Way – Andale! Capital Campaign

We would like to express our personal gratitude for everyone who has generously pledged and given to the Capital Campaign.

Our Parish goal is to raise $1,273,000 for the Archdiocesan Capital Campaign, On the Way – Andale! The Campaign is designed to fund specific projects for the Archdiocese and specific projects for our Parish. To date we have received $185,382.00 in pledges.

The Campaign kick-off began in November. As a registered parishioner, all of you should have received a letter in the mail and some were contacted by volunteers about the Capital Campaign. If you did not receive a letter, please let us know.

The Capital Campaign will run for three years. Notre Dame Church will receive 35% of the donations made which will enable us to address the most pressing needs in our community. You will find a Thermometer in the Narthex reflecting our ongoing success.

The weekend of January 19-20 will mark the official wrap up of the campaign - “Commitment Weekend”. Pledge cards will be available for those who have not yet had the opportunity to make a gift or pledge. In order for the Campaign to be a success, we ask that you prayerfully consider what you can give over the next three years.

  • Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration.

This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from.

    An adorer is needed for:

    Friday 12:00 midnight—1:00 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

    viernes 12:00 media noche—1:00 a.m.

Please pray for those who have died, and have gone to their eternal rest with the Lord, especially for Maria Calderon. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. The new librarians, Doug and Deborah Harris, are putting our collection of books by Fulton Sheen in the narthex to start 2019, and gave me an interesting article by Joseph Pronechen. Here is the first installment:

Archbishop Sheen’s Warning of a Crisis in Christendom

With a saintly long-ranging spiritual vision, Bishop Sheen saw the roots of today’s crisis firmly planted and growing in 1974, but gave us an antidote. “First of all, we are at the end of Christen-dom,” Bishop Fulton Sheen solemnly said during a television show in 1974. “Now not Christianity, not the Church. Remember what I am saying.” Then he defined what he meant. “Christendom is economic, political, social life as inspired by Christian principles. That is ending — we’ve seen it die. Look at the symptoms: the breakup of the family, divorce, abortion, immorality, general dishonesty.” That was 1974. Today we know it’s even worse with the definition of marriage and gender drawn into the picture. And the crisis within the Church. He reminded that of 22 civilizations that have decayed since the beginning of the world, 19 rotted and perished from within. “We live in it from day to day, and we do not see the decline.” Remember, that was in 1974. “We take it for granted—we get used to things, and almost accept them as the rule.” Despite the decline blaring today, isn’t that a rule? How many Catholics accept the counter message to Humanae Vitae? Sheen pointed out “the press that we read, the television that we see, is in no instance inspired by Christian principles. As a matter of fact, there is, on the part of many of us, the tendency to go down to meet the world — not to lift the world up. We are afraid of being unpopular — so we go with the mob.” The good bishop noted we were living in the fourth 500-year period of Church history, explaining “the Church is not a continuing thing — it dies and rises again. It proceeds on the principle of Christ himself as priest and victim. “And there comes the defeat, the seeming decay, we are put in the grave, and then we rise again. We have had four deaths in our Christian history.”
