Plain Speaking – Part 2 On the day of judgment, it’s all going to come down to one simple matter: in your life

have you truly loved the Lord? Have you truly served Him as best you could, not perfectly of course, but truly to the best of your ability? How much time have you spent on your knees before Him? Have you truly longed to be in His presence? Is this what your life has been, or not? I say that it’s a simple matter because what is going to count on that Day is the general and not so much the particular. And by that I mean this. What I mean by the particulars of our lives, I mean each and every thing we did. Now among all of those, there are going to be individual acts of sin. We all have them. I don’t believe the Scriptures teach that on Judgment Day, the Lord is going to produce a moment by moment record of your entire life and then you and He are going to go over the whole thing item by item and that you’re going to explain to Him or give an account of literally each thing you did. It’s not as if He’s going to say, “okay, here, on June 23, 1983 at 11:14 in the morning, you said a cuss word. What do you have to say for yourself?” And then you proceed on to 11:15. It’s the general thing about you, the thing that motivated you, the thing you oriented your whole life around, the goal you set for yourself, the thing that mattered to you most, the thing you strived to have or to achieve. It was probably the same thing your entire life. Maybe it changed. But it’s the thing that you were so devoted to, the thing that most occupied your mind, the thing that took up most of your time, the thing that filled your life, whatever you were trying to use to fill that empty space in your soul that only God can fill. That’s what we’re going to be judged on the most intensely. It’s not simply having lots of money that draws the woe. What if your uncle leaves you a bundle in his will? Does that make you woeful? Not necessarily. What if someone is desperately trying to find money to get out of serious debt, and on a whim buys a lottery ticket, and then wins the $100 million jackpot. Is this the woeful type that Jesus is warning about? No. Usually, getting rich is not such an easy thing to do. It takes a tremendous amount of energy, know-how, hard work, diligence, perseverance and strength. If it didn’t, there’d be a lot more people rich people around. But getting rich, and staying rich consumes you in a sense. You may indeed get to a place where you’re rich, and full, and laughing contentedly. But when you come to the end of your life and look back, you’ll see that it’s all behind you and that there’s nothing good ahead of you. You tried to fill the void in your life with wealth and now it has left you empty. These blessings and woes challenge us today every bit as much as they challenged the first ones who heard Jesus preach this sermon. They challenge us to examine ourselves to see what motivates us, what drives us. Is there anything that is consuming us, that takes up most of our time, that occupies our mind, or that we are striving after. As we are getting nearer the season of Lent, we begin to prepare to look inward to see if we’re trying to fill that empty space with anything other than God Himself. Amen.

¿Realmente has anhelado estar en Su presencia? No necesariamente. ¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones! En JesúsEn JesúsEn JesúsEn Jesús Padre DavidPadre DavidPadre DavidPadre David

ATTENTION: ALL LITURGICAL MINISTRIES

In lieu of ministry workshops this year, there will be a series of Regroup- Renew-Recruit (R, R, & R) times for each of the liturgical ministries beginning next Sunday, the 23rd with Environment and Art and the Altar Care ministries. These will all take place here in the church from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., and are for those who already serve as well as for those who may be interested in a particular ministry and would like to know more about it. It is extremely important that you be present for these times to hear and discuss the latest updates in your particular ministry, and any questions and concerns you may have.

The other upcoming dates are: October 14th – Lectors

November 4th – Liturgy Coordinators, Baptism Coordinators, Sacristans

November 11th – Ushers, Greeters, Welcoming Committee

Emergency appeal from Society of St Vincent de Paul Notre Dame You may have seen TV commercials about San Antonio Food Bank in need of food. Recovery from the strain on resources from Harvey last year has

been slow; this is now causing us to have food shortages in a lot of areas. If you could help, we need:

Soup, especially chicken noodle Jelly in a plastic container Canned beans, especially pork and beans and refried beans Breakfast cereal Regular spaghetti (no whole wheat or veggie)

Last month, we gave food to 2, 470 people. As October is the beginning of a new quarter, we expect more families needing food. Thank you.

This is the first of many communications in our bulletin for the upcoming On the Way-¡Ándale! Capital Campaign. This is an exciting time for our parish and parishes throughout the Archdiocese. This campaign will have a tremendous impact on the needs of our parish while also enabling our vibrant and growing Archdiocese to address the bright future of the Church in South Central Texas. Over the last few months, with the help of lay leadership at Notre Dame Catholic Church and the Archdiocese, we have identified our most pressing needs as a parish. We have chosen the following projects to accomplish with our share of the funds raised through our upcoming On the Way-¡Andale! Capital Campaign: Church Improvements We are in need of a study in order to improve our lighting and sound system so that the Word of God can be heard throughout the church. Other items in need of attention include remodeling the restrooms, painting of the interior spaces and refinishing the church pews. School Improvements The outdated air-conditioning equipment needs to be replaced to provide a more comfortable classroom environment for the students. The low roof on the gym building has many leaks and is in need of replacing. Social Center Improvements Upgrades to the Social Center would include enhancing the appearance of the facility by replacing dining room divider, kitchen window divider, replacing doors on the north side, new audio/video equipment for the Fireplace Room and much needed attention for the Men’s and Women’s bathrooms. These improvements will make the Social Center an even more welcoming and usable place where all may gather. Campus Security Improvements The security of our Parish Community is important. We would like to install security cameras and keyless door locks in selected locations and place signage to direct guests who visit Notre Dame Parish. with our share of the funds raised through our upcoming On the Way-¡Andale! Capital Campaign. The campaign will be led by Fr. David Wagner and David and Toni Wahrmund. Together, we have recruited a team of volunteers to assist with this important effort and to help prepare our campaign communication materials. We will be officially kicking off the On the Way-¡Andale! Capital Campaign at Masses on November 10-11, 2018. Please see the enclosed Capital Campaign Preview/Frequently Asked Questions brochure in today’s bulletin for more information and stay tuned for additional bulletin updates leading up to the kickoff!

Ambo By Paul Turner

Ambo, lectern, pulpit-it goes by many names but it serves one purpose, to mount the Liturgy of the Word. In some denominations, the ambo dominates the worship space. Because the Bible alone governs their system of belief, they give its proclamation primacy of place in the arrangement of the sanctuary. In Catholic churches the altar typically dominates the sanctuary because our tradition has emphasized the Eucharist as the climax of our worship. However, this worthy emphasis sometimes caused us to slight the role of the word of God, and our ambos have suffered from sapless designs and insignificant placement. For centuries the priest used to read the Scriptures himself at the altar. Altars had an “epistle side” and a “Gospel side.” Now the Scriptures have their own place, the ambo. (In Greek the word originally referred to a platform or stage). The ambo’s specific purpose provides a place for the Scriptures, the responsorial psalm and the Easter proclamation (the Exsultet, proclaimed once a year, only at Easter Vigil). It may also be used for the homily and the general intercessions (the Prayer of the Faithful). But that’s it! It is not the place for announcements, for the priest’s opening prayer, for the soloist at the wedding, or the folk choir-unless, of course, they’re leading the responsorial psalm. The priest should pray from his chair, and the songs and announcements belong at a stand in a different location. We reserve the ambo for the word of God. Consequently, the ambo should look special. It enjoys a fixed place in the sanctuary, not a portable status subject to removal or displacement. Too often we obscure the ambo with decorations and banners, as if it were merely a hook for hanging pictures rather than the home for word of God. It demands dignity of place, room for candles if desired and a location where all can see and hear the reader. Microphones of good quality are essential in most churches. A church’s best mikes belong with the Scriptures, not just with the musicians. The ambo is the primary place from which we hear the word of God and it deserves our sacred respect. Announcements By Paul Turner

Before Mass is over, we usually hear a few announcements. They are a sign that the community who worships together maintains a vibrant life during the week. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our life. It gathers our week’s activities into a hymn of praise and it sends us forth to proclaim the Gospel to all we meet. We hear many of those opportunities in the announcements. Announcements take place after the communion prayer and before the final greeting and blessing. Although it’s tempting to break the silence after communion with announcements while everyone is seated, that time has its own purpose—to thank God for the Eucharist we share. That important period of thanksgiving stands apart on its own. The communion prayer brings those silent prayers to a conclusion. Then, when communion is done, and before we are dismissed, we hear the announcements. For similar reasons, the announcements should not be made as part of the homily. Although everyone is seated and ready to listen, this time has a different purpose. The homily comments of the word of God; this unit within the Mass should not suffer from interruption. The priest, the deacon or another minister may let us know what is happening this week. Ordinarily the assembly remains standing, but if the announcements are long, they may be invited to sit. The announcements should be made from someplace other that the ambo; we reserve the ambo for the reading and preaching of sacred Scripture. There are no rules for what should be included or omitted. The announcements provide an opportunity for highlighting some information which can be detailed in the bulletin. They are intended to be brief. Those who leave Mass early miss this important time. All who share communion are summoned into service. The announcements extend an invitation to let our communion take root in the community. Copyright © 2003 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration.

This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from.

An adorer is needed for:

Friday 12:00 midnight—1:00 a.m. Friday 10:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

viernes 12:00 media noche—1:00 a.m. viernes 10:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.

A few things to ponder about our Church and our role as Laity.

Mark your calendars for Notre Dame’s Call to Reparation Service on

October 18that 6:30 p.m.

You may be asking, why should I do this?

You should do this because prayer and penance are both spiritual weapons against dark times.

We forget that Jesus said, “where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst.” When we come together as the Body of Christ and we wield the spiritual weapon of prayer and penance, it can change things.

Thoughts to ponder and actions to take this weekW

Are you praying daily for your Church? Why or why not?

Are you making any sacrifice in reparation for the sins committed against the innocent?

What are you doing?

MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR OCTOBER 18TH, 6:30 PM.

This is one thing you can do.

Dear Friend of Our Blessed Mother, you are invited to be part of the biggest Rosary Crusade in history to offset the sins of abortion, euthanasia, transgenderism, Satanism and the growing rate of drug addiction and suicide among young people—our nation desperately needs a supernatural solution.

The solution was given by the Blessed Mother at Fatima in 1917 when she told people to pray the Rosary for world peace. In answer to Our Lady’s request, America Needs Fatima is planning 23,000 public rosaries. A rosary will be recited on Saturday, October 13, 2018, 12:00 noon at the Empty Cross on Benson Drive (the hill above the car dealership on IH10). Please come and help pray the rosary.

For more information, contact Dixie Selgrath at (817)707-0416 or Diana Chaney at (830)822-7491.

Women’s Retreat at Tecaboca November 2-4, 2018

The retreat begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Sunday.

Our reflection in a mirror can be a reflection of Mary, Our Blessed Mother, in ways that you may have never considered. What kind of surrender did Mary make to become the Mother of Jesus? We may find that in our everyday lives, in the ordinary, we are extraordinary – like Mary was when she said the most important “yes” ever said. This retreat will lead women in an examination of our lives yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and how to give “our thoughts, our service to one another, our affections and loves, our words, our intellect, our waking, working, and sleeping, our ordinary human joys and sorrows to God.” Our mission is to echo and reflect Mary in our own mirror.

from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. Marion Worthington tells us about Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody, by Allen R. Hunt. “Ninety percent of Catholics don’t read Catholic books.” This is the penultimate sentence in this book. Twelve vignettes from the New Testament, anonymous, and well-known sources are briefly presented for maximal emotional impact, including the shooting of Pope St. John Paul II, Corrie ten Boom and “one of the cruelest guards at Ravensbrück”, and the fathers of victims and the perpetrator of the Murrah Federal Building bombing. This is not an ethical treatise, but a plea to forgive all perpetrators, whether they have expressed contrition or not. Be more Christ-like and nullify the first sentence above.

On October 27 she will be turning the position over to the couple whom the Holy Spirit has providentially supplied – Doug and Deborah Harris. Genia will continue to be cataloger and bulletin column editor until a replacement appears.

(Rite of Christian Initiation

of Adults)

Please keep our RCIA Candidates and Catechumens in your prayers. They

have been meeting since mid-August and our numbers continue to grow, praise God.

They are learning about the love of God and about our Catholic faith. October 20th

will be their fall retreat. Please pray that they will be open to the guidance of the Ho-

ly Spirit as they learn more about prayer and scripture. Then on Sunday, October 21,

they will participate in the Rite of Acceptance and Welcome at the 11:00 Mass. Keep

them in prayer as they discern their desire to continue on their journey to the Easter

Sacraments in the Catholic Church.

Well, we have the answer:

By exploring the many opportunities to assist your

parish as a catechist, nurturing the seeds of faith in

children, youth, and adults.

But then you think:

I can’t do that. I don’t know my faith well enough to serve in this capacity.

But you do:

While you would be exploring the many opportunities for your own faith formation you

would also be serving and helping in planting and/or nurturing the seeds of faith in so many,

whether it be in our children, youth or in our adults. We really need your help in many areas

whether it be in preparing parents and/or godparents at Pre-Baptismal preparation classes or

walking with our children/teens in their faith journey.

If you feel like you are being called please call the Youth and Family Ministry at

830 896-4233 for more information. Perhaps God is tapping you on the shoulder.
