Pentecost and the Ministry of the Holy Spirit—Part 2

Now that Christ has come, what is the ministry of the Holy Spirit? In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells His followers. Jesus says, “When the Advocate comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of Truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me, and you also are witnesses.” Jesus continues, “when He comes, He will convince the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father. When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” The Holy Spirit’s ministry, now that Christ has come and has been crucified, resurrected and ascended into heaven is to bear witness to Him and to inspire us to do the same. That means the Holy Spirit, as the manifestation of the presence and power of God, is creating, nurturing and growing the Church. Imagine what the world would be like if all of a sudden all traces of Christianity were withdrawn. No more Church, no Vatican, no more Bibles, no other Christian books, no Christian schools, no more seminaries, no monasteries or convents, no more Christmas or Easter, no Christian hospitals or charities, no Christian television, no Christian websites, nothing left in the world to remind us of Jesus. The fact is we probably cannot imagine such a thing. And the reason we can’t is because we DO have all those things in the world. And the reason we have them is because the Holy Spirit came just as Jesus said He would. We have the Church and the New Testament and Christian schools and all the rest of those things I asked you to imagine not having because the Holy Spirit is alive and well and working, do His ministry in the world, in the Church and in us.

The Apostles didn’t start the Christian Church all on their own. It’s not as if they were sitting around one day after Jesus had died and suddenly one of them said, “Well now what do we do?” And another one said, “Hey I know, let’s start a new religion!” That just doesn’t happen. A dozen defeated, dejected, worn out guys, hiding out for fear of their lives, afraid of being executed just like Jesus don’t all of a sudden begin boldly proclaiming that Jesus rose from the dead and converting thousands of others to the faith and start planting churches. In the Acts of the Apostles, immediately after the Holy Spirit visited the apostles, Peter began preaching the Gospel to the crowds. And three thousand people were converted. And the Church was born. And it grew. And it spread. That is the manifestation of the presence and power of God. That is the ministry of the Holy Spirit. To be continued . . .

NOTRE DAME SCHOOL 8TH GRADE GRADUATIONAwill take place at the 5:00 Mass on Saturday, June 2nd; please come and celebrate with these young people and their families as they pass another milestone in their lives.

On the weekend of June 2nd and June 3rd all parishes in our Archdiocese will be conducting a second collection for the Priest Pension Fund. This fund supports the pension for priests who have reached retirement age. This year there will be 69 priests receiving pensions. After faithfully serving many years in the Lord’s vineyard, the Priest Pension Plan ensures that our semi and fully retired priests may have a dignified retirement by being able to pay for the many expenses encountered in retirement. As the average age of priests continues to rise and priests, along with the general population, live longer lives, there is a greater need than ever to ensure the viability and strength of our pension. Please be generous in making a donation on the weekend of June 2nd and June 3rd to support our Archdiocesan Priest Pension Plan.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Notre Dame Kerrville Conference would like to thank Father David for continuing to support our work by allowing a monthly second collection. The generosity of the congregation in May benefited us in the amount of $3336. Also in May, we received 2200 lbs. of food as our share from the US Postal employee’s Food Drive. July, with its high electric bills, will soon be upon us. We are planning already, which first starts with prayer! God continues to provide what we need and starting last August, we weathered some unexpected events. First came the 40% decrease in our share of infant supplies from an annual drive. We more than made up for it in receiving overstock from Hurricane relief agencies. Then came Hurricane Harvey. This time it was more about calls offering donations of items Red Cross could not accept as first responders. It was tricky finding ways to get the targeted donated goods to the coast. With the help of parishioners, an OLH coach, and a Mother General from a religious order, we found coastal residents in need of clothing, bedding, and infant supplies. Also, last fall, a local charity had to cease immediately financial aid assistance for 3 months. We were able to cover the neighbors coming to us for assistance for the first time without cutting back on our usual financial distributions. We were able to do this through robust store sales and second collections. January ended being our largest month ever for utility aid. We were cushioned by generous end of year donations. This year’s 40 cans for Lent gave us 50% few cans than 3 years ago and a little less money than last year. This shortage was more than made up for by a first time donor walking into the store and handing over a 4-digit check. The Holy Spirit is with us in our endeavors. If you would like to join us, please call for volunteer opportunities. Also, if you have a group or organization and wish a Vincentian to speak about our work , we can schedule this.

Silent Lamp: The Thomas Merton Story, by William H. Shannon.

Fans of Thomas Merton will be eager to read this volume, called “an authoritative, if not definitive, biography” by a leading British scholar. Its unique format alternates between conventional chapters, heavy on the author’s interpretation of events, and “chronologies”, outlines of events in Merton’s life and contemporaneous events of world history, including the publication of books now recognized as classics. According to the author, “There are several ways in which this book may profitably be read. First, it could be read from beginning to end, as one would ordinarily do with a book. Second, one could initially read the chapters and consult the chronologies as it may seem necessary or read them after the chapters have been read. Third, one might read the chronologies first of all to get a fairly quick picture of the Thomas Merton story and follow this by a reading of the chapters. The choice depends on the reader and the kind of knowledge and interest he or she may have in Thomas Merton. My hope is that, whatever that knowledge and interest may be, this book may prove a source of growth for those who read it.”
