The Alpha and the Omega – Part 8: The Incarnation “I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.” These words we say at Mass profess our belief in the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. He came down from Heaven. In other religions, humankind attempt to reach up and touch God. In Christianity, God came down to meet us. In talking about the Incarnation, I can think of no better statement that what St. Anselm wrote in his treatise entitled, Cur Deus Homo which, translated from the Latin means “the reason for the God-Man” or “the reason for the Incarnation”. Anslem discusses why God became incarnate in the person of Jesus Christ. Was there no other way for humanity to be saved? Why must God become a man, and why must He die? St. Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, is writing from his perspective in 11th-12th century England. He talks about what would be “fitting” or not fitting regarding Almighty God. Why, some ask, couldn’t God have simply forgiven us by saying so? Anselm replies that it would not be fitting in that case given God’s infinite dignity, nor would it satisfy the demands of justice. So why couldn’t we ourselves sacrificed our lives for the reconciliation of humanity to God? The answer is that any and all sin is an offense to God. Since God is infinite in His holiness, His majesty, His goodness and righteousness, His dignity, any sin against Him is thus likewise infinite in its magnitude because all sin is ultimately against God. As Anselm sees it, in any transgression against anyone, there is the offense against the dignity of the person sinned against. The offender therefore owes a debt of recompense to the one offended. However, Anselm also believed, as was the custom in his time, that not only was recompense owed by the offender to the one offended, but also something extra because the offense was also against his dignity. For instance, if you stole a cow from your neighbor, not only did you owe your neighbor a new cow, you also owed something extra. And, if you weren’t able to repay the debt, another member of your family could on your behalf. Only on these terms could justice be served. In the case of humanity’s sin-debt against God, the magnitude of that debt is infinite, owing to the infinite magnitude of God’s dignity. Plus, we owe something extra to God. Since humanity is finite, we could never be able to repay God, nor the extra we owe. Only someone who is also of infinite magnitude could pay the sin-debt humanity owes to God. Yet, only God is infinite. We seemingly have an impasse, and humanity appears to be tragically and eternally lost. The solution, Anselm thinks, would be to have someone who is both a member of the human family and at the same time divine. Such a person could pay the sin-debt humanity owes to God. Jesus Christ is both God and man, and is therefore also infinite in His holiness, majesty, goodness, righteousness, and His dignity. But Jesus, being God Incarnate, doesn’t owe God a sin-debt because He never sinned. This is what makes Jesus’ sacrifice so inconceivably glorious. It is the ultimate act of self-sacrifice, out of His infinite love and mercy, to save us when we didn’t deserve it. And because Jesus’ sacrifice was so great an act, He is worthy of the greatest reward there could possibly be. But because Jesus is already divine, no more greatness or reward could be added to Him. So, Jesus takes the reward that He earned and gives is to us. That is our salvation, and that is the reason for the Incarnation. To be continued . . .

Catholic know God as their Father and Jesus as their friend, yet most bypass the third person of the Holy Trinity in their spiritual lives. The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, remains a mystery for many of us! BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. A parishioner told us about The Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ, by Archbishop Alban Goodier, S.J. This book is a difficult yet extremely moving writing that can touch the lives of readers. I have read many books on the Passion and Death of Christ through-out many years, but Archbishop Goodier’s book tops my list. This book is by far the most revealing, most moving, and most inspiring book on the suffering and death of Christ during his last hours. The reader will come to believe or, at times, feel he or she is at the very place of this horrific event. Archbishop Goodier, S.J., is an acclaimed, highly well-known master of many books on the life of Jesus Christ during the 19th & 20th centuries. The author excelled in this particular book by actually bringing alive to the reader the very human feelings, thoughts, memories, and words that Christ actually experienced during his last three days of life. Archbishop Goodier also brings to the intellectual mind of the reader Christ’s very own, very personal human actions, feelings, thoughts, words, etc., which captures the sense of His sadness, fear, pain, depression, feelings of hopelessness, loneliness, betrayal, and unspeakable suffering. Such an awareness can reach deep into the readers own heart or even life in an unbelievable or unexpected manner. It is possible that a reader may actually feel in his/her own person some or even many of the same feelings that Christ felt. Pick it up in the Narthex. This book was reviewed by Genia Schuler, a Notre Dame parishioner.

RCIA REFLECTIONS: (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

With the beginning of Lent, RCIA enters the period of

purification and enlightenment. The Catechumens,

awaiting baptism, are now called the Elect.

You will see a poster in the Narthex with pictures of

the adult RCIA Elect and Candidates. Many thanks to

Cynthia White from Kerrville Framing for the

beautiful job she did in preparing the picture board.

Below the poster board, in a basket, you will find

prayer request sheets. Please take one and during Lent

spend some time praying for that person who is

journeying to the Sacraments of Initiation at Easter.

They know this great community at Notre Dame

supports them in their desire to join you all at the table

of the Lord at Easter. Thank you all, and may God

bless you greatly.
