Hello and welcome to the January February edition of
the BT8 Focus magazine.
Happy New Year!
We have a New Year, New You theme to this issue. If you’ve overindulged
during the festive season, and are
thinking about taking up some new exercise, we’ve some ideas for you on
pages 10 to 13.
Our book review features some of the best and most amusing novels written
as diaries, some classics I’m sure you’ll be familiar with and hopefully one or
two new ones too.
We’ve also got plenty of puzzles to keep you occupied during these long Winter
evenings, including a new one - Two Minutes Trial - which can be found on
page 20. No cheating!

But what’s the alternative when you need a regular exercise regime to help you lose weight and regain vitality?
Working out at home with the help of a video console has become a popular alternative to going out to a dance class or a gym. The great advantage is that it allows you to design a programme to suit your own needs and preferences.
However if - like me - you’re not a great self-motivator, you may find it hard to keep going without a human instructor to give encouragement. After several attempts to follow an aerobic routine in my lounge I felt that the floorboards had suffered enough and made the decision to join a regular exercise class.
So how do you find a movement class that will suit you?
A quick browse round the websites of local clubs is likely to reveal a baffling array of exercise styles with exotic-sounding names such as Zumba, Pilates, Iyengar Yoga, Spinning, Hatha Yoga and Tai Chi.
It’s nice to be spoiled for choice, but there are a few things to consider before you start shopping for the lycra bodysuit and matching accessories. How old are you? Do you have any medical conditions? How much exercise do you
normally take (for example, do you regularly walk, bicycle, play a sport, or are you a complete couch potato)?
If a leisurely stroll around the supermarket is your main form of exercise then a cardiovascular workout is probably not the place to start.
You need to build your programme slowly, so it may benefit you to start with a beginners’ yoga class where you will be concentrating on breathing and stretching rather than trying to push yourself way beyond your normal limits.
Don’t make the mistake of assuming that yoga is just about bending your torso into strange positions whilst inhaling incense and chanting. There are a variety of different kinds of yoga out there - some are not for the faint hearted!
Iyengar Yoga is a great choice for all levels from
beginners to experienced yogis. With its main emphasis on detail, precision and correct body alignment Iyengar yoga tailors the practice of poses in a safe way to the individual’s ability. You are in good hands as teachers are trained to correct postures with appropriate use of props like blocks, bricks and belts.
If you are new to exercise classes you will be glad to
It’s January, and having eaten and drunk your way through the contents of at least three shopping trolleys during the festive season, you are feeling in need of a quick fix so you can begin to feel healthy again.
The time of the year doesn’t help. Spring is still a couple of months away and although you’d love to go for a bracing walk in the park, you know that after half an hour in muddy boots, being soaked by persistent rain, you’ll give up and go home.

know that yoga is about doing as much as you feel your own body can manage. It is definitely not a competitive sport. After working through the yoga poses, the classes usually finish with relaxation time - Shavasana is everyone’s favourite part - so you float home feeling relaxed and calmer.
There are a variety of different kinds of yoga, some of which are really quite challenging for a beginner, so do have a chat with the instructor before booking your course to make sure that you have chosen the right type for you.
Pilates borrows heavily from Yoga and was originally devised to help injured dancers and athletes. Once again there is an emphasis on good posture and exercises are designed to strengthen the spine, improve circulation and open up the joints.
When I started Pilates I found some exercises really quite tough – particularly those that focused on small muscle groups around the joints – but as with yoga, you
can look forward to a fantastic sense of release and revitalisation at the end of each class.
A fitness programme that is currently enjoying huge success in this country is Zumba. Invented by Columbian choreographer Alberto Perez in the 1990s, Zumba combines exercise with dance. Unlike conventional dance classes where the instructor faces the class and teaches a series of steps, Zumba is a continuous series of free-flowing moves – the instructor sometimes stands with his or her back to the class, demonstrating actions for the students to follow.
With its slogan “Ditch the workout – join the party”, it offers a great way to enjoy exercise without feeling that you are being observed and judged by the instructor. If you enjoy dancing to music then this is probably a good choice, but do think twice if your movement is restricted or if you suffer from high blood pressure.
However you decide to pursue your new exercise regime, make a promise to yourself to keep it up. You won’t really start feeling the benefit until you’ve settled in to your new classes and begun to master those new moves. After a few weeks you’ll be surprised to find how much better you feel, both physically and mentally.
It may take a few attempts before you find a class that suits you, but it will be worth it in the end. Make sure the New Year really does mean a new you.

MAKE 2013 THE YEAR YOU TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR FINANCES
Hopefully your other New Year’s resolutions are going well, so here are a few financial ones to help you make the most of 2013.
1) Check your savings rate - Some savings accounts are paying as little as 0.1% interest but it is easy to switch to a better rate. Also check that you are not paying tax on the interest if you don’t need to – if you are a non-taxpayer you can fill in a simple form to get interest paid gross or opt for an ISA which is tax-free.
2) Check your mortgage deal - Bad news for savers is good news for borrowers, as many of us have seen our mortgage payments reduce. However, a lower payment doesn’t necessarily mean you are getting the best rate, as lenders are keen to attract remortgage customers and there are some great deals out there with low fees. This could also be a good time to overpay, reduce the interest payable and get your mortgage cleared early.
3) Check insurance renewal dates - You know you should shop around for your insurance cover, but renewal notices usually only come in two weeks in advance and don’t give you much time to look elsewhere. Take a note now of when your car, home and private medical insurance is due for renewal and start shopping around a month before.
4) Know what you are paying for - Have a look through your bank statement – do you know where all the direct debits and standing orders are actually going? If you have financial products, such as pensions, life insurance or income protection then make sure you have the policy documents and you know exactly what you are paying for.
5) Make a will - This is one that most people put off, but having a will in place can make all the difference to your family if the worst happens.
And finally...
6) Get your finances on track for 2013 by booking your free, no-obligation financial review with Freedom Financial Planning - And let us help you with all of the above!

WISHING YOU PEACE WITH GOD
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ.
(Bible – Romans 5 v 1)
FORGIVENESS OF SINS Through this man (the Lord Jesus Christ) is preached unto you
the forgiveness of sins:
And by him all that believe are justified from all things.
(Bible – Acts 13 v 38 &39)
LASTING CONTENTMENT Blessed (happy) is he whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
(Bible – Psalms 32 v 1)
CERTAINTY OF HEAVEN For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life (in Heaven).
(Bible – John 3 v 16)
DEAR READER It is our desire and prayer that 2013 will be the
beginning of a happy future for you. True joy and lasting happiness can
only be found through a personal knowledge of Jesus Christ as Lord and
Saviour. Have you considered the cost of dying without Him as Saviour?
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world,
and lose his own soul?
(Bible – Mark 8 v 36)
He that believeth not the Son shall not see life but the
wrath of God abideth on him.
(Bible – John 3 v 36)
