May/June Issue of the BT8 Focus - a community magazine and business directory for residents living in the BT8 area of South Belfast.
Welcome message from author
This document is posted to help you gain knowledge. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think about it! Share it to your friends and learn new things together.
Hello again Everyone. What a difference a few weeks can make! Since the last issue of the BT8 Focus, the huge Spring snowfalls have been and gone. I don't think any of us expected it to be so bad - as someone said, it looked like Narnia. Today, as i write, it’s much more Spring-like - sunny and a good deal warmer. If only we could guarantee a ’Summer’, the snow wouldn't seem so bad.
For some time I’ve been fascinated with the orbiting International Space Station (ISS). I love to see it flying overhead - only possible on clear nights. (check the website www.heavens-above.com for 10-day orbit predictions). The current Commander is Canadian astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield. In April he posted a
beautiful picture of Belfast from space “Belfast
graced with
a touch of
haze on a
clear Spring
night” - I
just had to include it here. He posts the most incredible photos of Earth taken from the ISS. To see them, follow him on twitter @Cmdr_Hadfield or search for him on Facebook. A daily reminder just how amazing our planet is.
Look out for the next issue of the BT8 Focus in July 2013.

Hello, my name is Marianne. I’ve just opened a really special Dog Grooming Salon on Mount Merrion Avenue. I wanted my salon to be different from other Grooming Salons, so I based it on a human Beauty Salon. There’s no smell of wet dogs and no hairs lying about. I want your dogs to feel comfortable and safe, in a place of peace and calmness. I offer not only grooming, but also advice on coat care and grooming tips for customers. I follow Caesar Milan's Theory - becoming one with a dog when being groomed, treating all dogs with kindness and love. I do not have any dogs waiting in cages, I groom one dog at a time. I really love what I do and I take pride in my work. I would like to invite you to visit my salon - I like to have consultations with all my clients before I groom their dogs. To make an appointment, please give me a ring.

Wills - Part 1 Do you have a Will? It’s something everyone needs to consider at some point.
If you’re not sure if you need one, read on. We have compiled some of the most common questions we receive from clients in relation to making a Will.
“Why should I make a Will – everything will go to my family anyway so what is the benefit of a Will?”
▪ A Will allows you to name the people who you want to distribute your estate (known as 'the executors'). By making a Will YOU can choose who you would like to take on this somewhat onerous task. Without a Will in place your next of kin will be primarily responsible which can be a difficult burden at such an emotional time.
▪ You can ensure you leave your estate to the people you want to receive it. Currently without a Will the law stands that your spouse will receive the majority of your estate. However if you would like to leave specific gifts e.g. to a sibling or grandchild, a Will is the best way to ensure your wishes are carried out.
“What should my Will contain?” Your Will should outline your wishes after your death – this can be in relation to the distribution of your money and possessions but it can also refer to non-pecuniary wishes such as: - ▪ Your remains – as morbid as it may seem it is something we all have to think about.
Whether you choose to be buried or cremated can be put into a Will. The provision is not binding on the executors however your wishes will be known.
▪ Charitable Legacies – can be easily outlined in a Will. (The added benefit to this is that at present they are not liable to Inheritance Tax)
▪ Sentimental items – such as jewellery or photographs can be left to specific people.
“I want my wife to remain in the marital home when I pass away, however I want to ensure the house is ultimately left to my son – can I do this?” This is a common question, particularly in the farming community. You have two options – You can use your Will to grant your wife a Life Interest – i.e. a Right of Residence until she passes away, and request that thereafter the house be transferred to your son. The alternative is that you and your wife make 'Mutual Wills' – i.e. you both leave to each other your whole estates and once the second spouse passes away everything is left to your son.
If you require further advice on setting up a Will, Campbell Stafford’s experienced team will be able to help you. Please contact Michael Stafford or Louise Harvey for more
information. In Part 2 next issue, we will cover more common questions about Wills.

UPDATE ON RECENT PENSION CHANGES
Pensions have been in the press a lot recently with two major changes being introduced – the flat-rate state pension and auto-enrolment for employees.
The state pension system has been heavily criticised for being over-complicated and unfair. Under the current system, the full basic state pension is £110.15 (for 2013/14) per week. This is earned by having sufficient National Insurance contributions – 30 years of qualifying activities; which can include employment or being in receipt of certain state benefits such as child benefit or carers allowance.
Dependent on the level of National Insurance contributions being paid, an entitlement to Additional State Pension (previously known as SERPS) can be built up. This can take the state pension to over £200 a week. Those who have retired on a very low income can be entitled to State Pension Credits, to take their income up to a minimum £145.40.
Under the new system, to be introduced for those reaching state retirement age after April 2016, the flat-rate state pension will be £144 per week (expected to have increased to around £155 per week by the time it is introduced) and is dependent on 35 years of qualifying activities. This is a much simpler system but will actually leave a lot of people worse off, highlighting the need to consider your own personal retirement planning and not just rely on the state pension.
Company pension auto-enrolment was introduced for the biggest employers in October 2012, and will gradually be rolled out to the smaller employers over the next few years. The majority of employers must have a pension scheme in place by April 2017.
Under the new rules, employers must offer a suitable pension scheme that they contribute a minimum amount to, while the employee normally also must contribute a minimum amount. Employees can choose to opt out of the pension scheme but are otherwise automatically enrolled.
The advantage for most employees is that their employer is contributing to their pension pot. However, the amounts involved could be quite small and again you need to consider your own personal retirement planning and not take for granted that you will have enough to retire on.
For a free review of your current pension arrangements or for further advice contact Emma Greer; tel: 07885 407604 or e-mail: [email protected]

St Ita’s Primary School - Environmental Youth Speak Final
Clara McGowan from Mrs Maguire’s P7 class made it to the Grand Final of the Environmental Youthspeak Competition. Having won the Castlereagh area heat of the competition, Clara was invited to the Northern Ireland final which this year was hosted by Limavady Council and compered by local celebrity and illusionist, David Meade. The competition encourages environmental awareness among young people by giving them the opportunity to research and debate environmental issues. Pupils can improve their communication skills, develop self-confidence and articulate arguments based on environmental facts. Clara stunned the judges with her speech entitled “My Waste’s Got Talent”. The competition was fierce and Clara was pipped at the post by another contestant. However, a great day was had by all.
Congratulations to our Cross Country Team who did so fantastically well in the Castlereagh Borough Council Cross Country Finals. In very windy and cold conditions the girls went out in force. Rachel Scott finished 1st followed very closely by Amy Stewart, who had the run of her life, in 3rd, Khara Edgar 4th and Sophie Senior 6th.
Ellen Kealey, Niamh Loughran and Rachel Agnew also finished well up the 60+ field. The girl’s team came an amazing 1st place. The boys ran a tactical race with Fintan Farnan putting in a tremendous sprint finish to clinch first place followed by Kevin McKeown 23rd and Daniel Connor 25th. The boys were unfortunate to be pushed into 4th place in the team event. Our girls and Fintan qualify for the South Eastern Finals on May 2nd.
We wish them all the best of luck at the finals!

Anti-Social Behaviour As we approach the summer months police are asking young people in the area to take responsibility for their own actions when in public.
Police often receive the following types of complaints:
Anti-social behaviour/noise/nuisance
Use of quads/motorcycles on public roads and places
Criminal damage to property
Street/underage drinking
Police want everyone to think before they act and be aware of the impact their actions have on the local community.
