Tee Off Celebration

On January 10th members gathered for a fun filled evening in celebration of our year as the host site for the 113th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. Many thanks to Noula Cumins and her committee for a wonderful event. On behalf of the Executive Committee of the 2013 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, I

want to thank the members of our club for their tremendous support of the 113 Club. To

date we have 125 members who will always be remembered for their support of bringing

the world’s most prestigious women’s golf championship to our club. Their support and

enthusiasm is contagious and is heightening. We have almost completed our fundraising

goals of making this event one of the most memorable in the history of the USGA and our

club. We are close to exceeding the record of every previous “member fundraising” effort

and another 25 members would put us over 150; a record that would be hard to surpass.

Won’t you help to ensure our club’s place in history by joining? To become a part of this

extraordinary group, or for more information, please contact Stephanie Atkinson at

[email protected].

Tee Off Celebration

Although a stroke-play format was selected for the first championship, the Women’s Amateur became a match-play competition in 1896, and has remained so ever since. One noteworthy champion is the late Glenna Collett Vare, a lifelong amateur who won the Cox Trophy a record six times. In the 1920s and 1930s, Vare was the darling of the sports world, much as Bob Jones was during that era. Second only to Vare is JoAnne Gunderson Carner, who won five Women’s Amateur Championships. Combined with her two wins in the U.S. Women’s Open and a single win in the U.S. Girls’ Junior, Carner’s record of eight USGA titles is eclipsed only by Jones and Tiger Woods, who have each won nine. Women’s Amateur champions seem to have a remarkable facility to re-peat. Hoyt, Alexa Stirling, Vare, Vir-ginia Van Wie and Juli Simpson Ink-ster have all won the Women’s Ama-teur three times consecutively. A noteworthy six champions — Gene-vieve Hecker, Dorothy Campbell, Margaret Curtis, Betty Jameson, Kay Cockerill and Kelli Kuehne — have won twice in succession. The Women’s Amateur has long identified some of golf’s greatest women players, many of whom have gone on to successful professional careers. Along with the champions listed above, Patty Berg, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Louise Suggs, Marlene Stewart Streit, Anne Quast Sander, Barbara McIntire, Catherine Lacoste, Carol Semple Thompson and Beth Daniel have all secured a place in women’s golf history.

The Cox Trophy

Since 1896 the Robert Cox Trophy has been

awarded annually by the USGA to the win-

ner. The trophy was donated by Robert Cox

of Edinburgh, Scotland, a member of the

British Parliament and a golf course design-

er. It remains the oldest surviving trophy

awarded for a USGA championship. Along

with a gold medal, a replica of the 2-foot-

high (0.61 m) silver case of Etruscan design

is given to the tournament winner. The orig-

inal trophy is on permanent display at the

USGA Museum and Library. The Robert Cox

Trophy is the only USGA trophy donated by

someone from another country.

Q: What is the Format of Play for the

Championship?

A: The championship will begin with 156 of the

best women amateur golfers from around the

world playing 36 holes of stroke play over two

days. August 5-6. The low 64 players will then

compete in match play from August 7-10, with the

Q: What Role does the USGA Play?

A: While the Country Club of Charleston is host-

course for play each day, manage the caddie op-

eration, and execute an evacuation of the course

if required, etc. The USGA will manage the qual-

play throughout the week of the championship

(e.g. select yardages, hole locations, rough

heights, green speeds, etc.) provide Rules offi-

cials, manage the championship’s pace of play,
