Dear Friend of Annunciation Parish & School, Friday, December 8th, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A “solemnity” is the highest ranking feast on the Catholic Church’s Calendar. This feast day is also a Holy Day of Obligation. Our Masses here at Annunciation Parish will be at 8:15 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The Immaculate Conception cel- ebrates the fact that Mary, herself, was free from sin from the moment she was conceived in her mother’s womb. The December 8th Solemnity of the Immac- ulate Conception is celebrated exactly nine months prior to the September 8th Feast of the Nativity (Birth) of Mary! There is a famous tapestry in the Reims Cathedral which is made up of fifteen tableaux connected to Mary’s life. Tableaux VI, “The Perfection of Mary", is full of symbols regarding Mary’s Immac- ulate Conception. Upcoming Events

A Wonderful First Weekend of Advent at Annunciation!

Early in the morning on December

13th, especially in Scandinavian

countries, it is common for the oldest

daughter in the family to wear a white

gown and red sash, with a wreath of

candles on her head, and serve coffee

and Lucy Cats (saffron buns) to the

household. It’s the feast day of Santa

Lucia, or Saint Lucy!

Saint Lucy lived in Syracuse on the

island of Sicily. Around the year 304,

she was martyred at a very young age

during a time when the Emperor Dio-

cletian was persecuting Christians.

One legend says that during the

persecution, Lucy’s eyes were

plucked out!

Saint Lucy is the Patron Saint of those

who are blind or suffer from eye diseases, as well as the

island of Sicily. She is also one of our Second Grade’s

Patron Saints.
