1. The Samsung smart window

Here is the teaser video for a new “transparent” smart window screen released at CES 2012

(world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow)… And from all reports, it’s one of the hottest

pieces of technology seen so far. It’s actually a transparent screen. The Samsung Smart Window

wraps the whole “minority report” experience right up. Supposedly, the new “Smart Window” is

just about to hit mass production, so we won’t have to wait too long in 2012 to get our hands on

one!

2. In Memoriam, Stu The OMD mouse.

Stu the OMD mouse.

First spotted in OMD a few weeks ago. He began tweeting with a philosophy of insights, ideas, cheese.

His first tweet was “Hey @omdinfluentials - I thought I heard people talking about Rentokill. Say it aint so?”

His last tweet was something I couldn’t ignore:

“Hey @johncclancy – you on ignition 5 this week? Any chance you could highlight my plight?”

May he rest in peace.

Nike have just launched a new band called fuelband. It contains a small chip that helps measure every single step you take and gives you daily reports on every single piece of activity that

you carry out when out and about. They have added a hashtag called #makeithappen to promote the launch.

The the Nike FuelBand asks you how active you want to be? You can set your daily goal and Nike+ FuelBand tracks your

progress, lighting up from red to green throughout the day. Get to green and you’ve hit your goal. Making life a sport is the way that Nike wants you to live your life. It allows you to

turn everyday into a game. You can challenge yourself to capture records, reach new milestones, unlock

special achievements and more.Is it an overpriced pedometer at $149?

4. The joy of quiet

“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.” – Albert Einstein

I read an interview with the perennially cutting-edge designer Philippe Starck. What allowed him to remain so consistently ahead of the curve? “I never read any magazines or watch TV,” he said. “Nor do I go to cocktail parties, dinners or anything like that.” He lived outside conventional ideas, he implied, because “I live alone mostly, in the middle of nowhere.” Around the same time, I noticed that those who part with $2,285 a night to stay in a cliff-top room at the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur pay partly for the privilege of not having a TV in their rooms; the future of travel, I’m reliably told, lies in “black-hole resorts,” which charge high prices precisely because you can’t get online in their rooms. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/opinion/sunday/the-joy-of-quiet.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all

5. The Joy of books

In a world where e-books are taking over from paper books, how does a local book store attract attention?

A couple in Toronto took matters into their own hands and created a stunning stop motion video over the course of a year using the books in their store. Everything you see in the video, can be bought in the shop. Quite a lot of effort to go to, you might think, but over 2 million people have watched the video in the last 2 weeks, and you can bet interest in Type bookstore has increased if nothing else.
