I remember my first year going away to college I sneaked in alcohol on the very first night the good thing is I wasn’t the only one. A few people in my block had done the

same we stayed the night pretending to know each other. The following weekend was worse TUKS RAG is real freedom the package and the burden of freedom follows on a Sun-day when you have to wake up.

Freedom is not holding hands in public but telling your consort that you are going out with high school friends without having a worry. It is about feeling the need to ex-plain to the cashier that the nappies you just paid for aren’t for you but your cousin you don’t want to look like you have a child.

Freedom is to walk pass the security guy at a pub entrances without being asked your age or to produce identifica-tion. It is all written on your face.

Going out partying the whole weekend is a personal choice it has nothing to do with freedom. Freedom is being away from home, wearing your pair of dirty FREEDO

M “Tekkies” on a random Saturday, swag up without worry-ing about mom’s comments.

Freedom is deciding to have bread and coffee for breakfast, noodles and cordial for lunch and dinner be-cause you want to save up for weekend without getting dietary and health remarks from grandma.

But for most of us we know that Freedom is going out to a lounge when no one sees you just to have a taste of that cosmopolitan cocktail, drinking it with your head bowed and your eyes rolling like a skate, without wor-rying about what your dad would think of you when he sees you drinking a red drink from a cone shaped glass with a hanging umbrella. “Son you should drink real beer,

something strong with a bad taste” sit down old man it is just thirst.

That my friend is real freedom the one problem is once you get too much of it, you end up not knowing what to do with it.

Happy Freedom month,Tebogo Tau

DAYS OF THE YEAR: APRIL5TH APRIL : WALK TO WORK DAY

A chance to reduce carbon emissions, get fit, and avoid the traffic jams – what more could you ask from Walk to Work Day?

9TH APRIL: BE KIND TO LAWYERS DAY

Be Kind To Lawyers Day encourages you to – yes, you guessed it – be kind to your lawyer. Wine and dine them, ring them up and tell them how much you appreciate their hard work, and shower them with lawyer-themed gifts!

12TH APRIL: WALK ON YOUR WILD SIDE DAY

Walk On Your Wild Side Day is a chance to do something no one would ever expect you to. Today is a day to embrace your inner wild streak – to wearing nothing but neon pink, dying your hair green for a day, or showing everybody who ever said you couldn’t that you could.

16TH APRIL: ONE DAY WITHOUT SHOES DAY

It’s very easy to take shoes for granted – but many people, and many children in the world don’t own or have access to shoes. Con-sider how much shoes enable you to travel, traverse uneven terrain, and to take care of your feet; and go without shoes on One Day With-out Shoes Dayto show your awareness of and support for those who don’t have access to such a simple but important piece of clothing.

18TH APRIL: AMATEUR RADIO DAY

Amateur Radio Day celebrates the beginings of the IARU – theInter-national Amateur Radio Union – back in 1925. They are best recog-nised for their contribution to disaster relief workers in areas where communications are little to non-existent.

30TH APRIL: HONESTY DAY

Honesty Day is all about telling the truth. Be brave and share opin-ions, thoughts and perspectives that might otherwise go unsaid in order to be polite – but take care not to upset or offend others.

Interview with Blaqseed

Always a Bridesmaid, always a new outfitGot the wedding blues, need new shoes!

It’s official, wedding season has begun amongst my circle of friends. From engagement parties, hen parties, kitchen teas, and bachelorettes as well as wedding days – My wardrobe is feeling

the heat as well as my little red (fake) leather purse.

As I’m sure majority of us ladies know, weddings are a time for celebrating love and pulling out all the stops when it comes to our outfit choices, however when you are literally attending a different celebration of love every second weekend your “choices” start becoming very limited. This has led me to the reduce, re-use and recycle frame of mind.

This term refers to shopping at friends and updating older items to look fresh and trendy. (Sometimes even my mother’s ward-robe fulfils the need for new attire) I have always lived by the rule that staying true to one’s personal style is key when rummaging through friends and families wardrobes for bits and bobs to create a new “wedding appropriate” look that no one has seen before.

You don’t need to spend millions to look like you just walked off

the runway, beauty and great style cannot be bought. It’s about finding something that works for you and the occasion (weddings it seems have become the trend) – and then DIY, mend and make the outfit unique and special and something that people have never seen before. And the best part – YOU CAN WEAR IT AGAIN AND AGAIN WITH A FEW SIMPLE UPDATES! Wedding blues eat my DIY’ed Jimmy Choo’s.

Oh and a quick gym update from the last month’s Morning Glory article. The mornings are becoming cooler and gym goers are be-coming far and few between which has kept me motivated to beat the early morning winter chill and keep this bum in shape (Oh and I now have a full blown addiction to coffee and mid-morning snacks – caffeine is key in staying awake)

(For tips and trends for a chic and stylish lifestyle, or to indulge in all things fashion, find me at www.stylishlymeby-taryn.blogspot.com or email me at [email protected] or twitter @stylishlytaryn)

Franc: I love your name and the way you spell it, how did you come up with it?Blaqseed: We believe that the almighty has planted seeds in all of us, and our intention is to help people realize that. And let their seeds grow into ripe fruit that will feed the nation. Franc: Where are you guys based and how many members are in you group?Blaqseed: we are based in the Vaal, Vanderbijlpark, and Blaqseed is three membersFranc: In what genre would you say your music falls under?Blaqseed: Neo-soulFranc: Did your parents support you in what you choose to do with your life or were they hoping you’d become lawyers or doctors?!Blaqseed: The parents were sceptical at first but they eventually came around when they saw how serious we are with this. Hopefully with this magazine spread they’ll be assured hahahaha Franc: What has been your biggest gig to date?Blaqseed: Auditioning in front of the S.A’s got talent judges and having the crowd give us a standing ovation.

Franc: The music industry is tough in S.A, what do you think sets your group aside from the rest?Blaqseed: We keep it simple; we took the basics of each element that is in Blaqseed and incorporate it in our music. Franc: Who would you say has had the biggest influences on your music?Blaqseed: There’s a variety all the way from Bra Hugh Masekela, Ri-hanna, Tumi from the volume, to Metallica, Prokid who goes by PRO now, Thandiswa Mazwai, Soul Renovators and most underground musicians.Franc: Which dream artist would you love to perform with? Blaqseed: A lot of artists in South Africa are equally good, and

performing alongside any artist that has influenced the South African music industry in a positive and true manner would be a dream come true.Franc: Well we at ICED* wish you all the best in the future, and hopefully we’ll have another chat in a year where some of your goals and dreams have been reached.Blaqseed: Thank you for the chat and I hope our next chat will be about a tour of S.A or Africa.

Interview with Tony BFranc: Hi Tony, firstly I’d like to know, does the “B” in “Tony B” stand for some hard to pronounce Portugeese or Russian sur-name?!Tony B: Hahaha no, My surname is Blom..It comes from German descend.Franc: You are a legend in Vaal and considered one of the best DJ’s we have to offer, but at what age did this all start?Tony B: I started to play 15 years ago at the age of 16 (crap I’m giv-ing away my age here).Franc: You have a new CD out, what’s it called and where can we get it?Tony B: Yea it’s called “LOUDER” DANCE FOR LIFE 2013. This cd is only available as a promotional giveaway @ the venues where I play, but you can download it for free on my Sound Cloud page www.soundcloud.com/djtonyb82 My two other albums is also available on there... Franc: Any big gigs coming up in the next few months?Tony B: For now it’s only my appearance with Cape town Dj’s Pascal & Pearce on the 3de of May @ Cascades Nightclub but my Promoter has promised me that we will do H20 before this year is done..Hahaha..Franc: And where can we see you live every week?Tony B: Only one answer to that question and that is the best pre-mium venue in the whole of the Vaal “Cascades Nightclub / Ultra Lounge / Sky Lounge.Shout Out to Franc and the crew of ICED Magazine thanks for the support and for having me.

If you want to win the new autographed Louder CD from Tony B, sim-ply answer this: At what venue is Tony B the resident DJ? Please send your answer to [email protected], lucky draw will be done

Light weight training is an easy way for women to get a nice “wom-anly” figure while slimming down and firming up. For women to get this look instead of a buff, manly look, it takes a different approach

to lifting weights. Although there are a few rare cases where a women’s goal is to look muscular like a man, women should look like women and men should look like men.

When approaching a workout, men and women have much different goals in mind. In general, a man is going to work out to get buff, ripped or strong .Women, on the other hand, usually workout to get slim, firm and fit … not manly.

Because of these differences in goals there are some do’s & don’ts for women:

• Do not do any “forced” reps.• Do not lift to “feel the burn”.• Do take longer rests in between sets. These items all affect the muscle growth of women who want to tone

up. The first piece of bad advice for women is the usually the amount of sets, reps and weight that they are told to do or lift.

Forget about lifting a little heavier weight with less reps because that builds muscle mass. Right? Wrong.

• High reps create the pump in the muscle.• High reps increase the speed at which the muscle grows.• High reps increase the size and numbers of the smallest blood

vessels in the muscle.By pushing yourself to do that extra set of ten reps, you are actually

increasing the “pump” in the muscle. This is also known as sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. The pump feels good. You feel like you are getting toned. But you aren’t. You are forcing fluid into the muscle … growing the size of the muscle. The best way way to build muscle mass (for women or men) is to lift a high volume of sets and reps. So if you do 3-4 sets at 10-15 reps, that’s great for building muscle, but not for toning up.

When doing sets of 10-15 reps you may have to really push yourself (or your personal trainer may be pushing you) to get in those last 2-3 reps. This is the opposite of what you should do. Stop doing 3 sets of 10-15 reps. Do fewer reps and focus on strength training workouts. It might sound a little strange, because women don’t often want to get stronger, but it strengthens the muscle. Now that you know you should not do high reps, here’s why you should do low reps.

• Lower reps create less of a “pump”• Lower reps are less likely to fatigue and increase muscle size• Lower reps increase tension in a muscle which further in-

creases tone.

Tattoos at the CoastHey ICED-readers

Been a while since I did a “lekker” write up seeing that the westcoast has kept me busy with some projects, but glad to report that Jay is back in action. Bringing you this month a something different.

Now for most of us body art, tattoos, piercings is a way of self-expression of individuality right? I always had a thing for tattoos as most of our generation does, but the question always is what to get, something with meaning. So the Cape Town region offers a lot of this, studios everywhere. But like most of us we are very aware of hepatitis and so forth and who does the best work. Turns out back in the day when yours truly was still on the path of finding myself, I stayed in Richards bay. We use to have a little tattoo shop called Zulu Tattoos, turns out that the apprentice Shane ended up in the mother city…

I phoned Shane up and like old friends we discussed what I had in mind. I sent in my design and he had a look at it, made some suggestions and an appointment was made. Arriving at the shop on the Saturday morning, I was greeted, final discussion and some ideas were thrown around on the sleeve design. Now it’s very rare that you get the feel of a home in the studio. In the prepping process I was at ease with my favorite music in the background while getting my ink done.

Now with over 15 years’ experience, Shane provides all your needs to a level of satisfaction. The shop opened up in Parklands on September 1st 2011 and since then it’s built a happy client base.

Also on the side he gets a lot of guest artists in doing same spectacular work as himself. If ever in the Cape Town region and looking for that old/new school feel while getting your ink done…this is the place to be!!! Check out their website on www.westcoastinkedtattoo.co.za or on Facebook

Be sure to check out next month as I will be bringing you more on the entertain-ment side from Cape Town, Bon Jovi, and Kings of chaos and many more.

Keep Rocking ICED ReadersJ.

Smart “ice cubes” tell you when you’ve had too much to drink

With a few drinks under our belts, many of us can think every thought that crosses our mind is a work of genius, and one student at MIT certainly drew some alcohol-induced inspi-

ration after a late night of revelry – though not exactly the way he would’ve liked. Following a party that ended with a trip to the hospital, Dhairya Dand created a set of “ice cubes” that track how much you drink and flash red to tell you when you’ve had too much.

Dand, a student with MIT’s Media Lab, created the set of glowing cubes after a particularly nasty experience with alcohol that ended with him blacking out and waking up in the hospital seven hours later. Realizing that many people are just as likely to make the same mistake without some sort of clear warning, he designed the cubes to monitor a person’s alcohol intake and change color from green to red, giving them a visual cue to stop.

Each cube is comprised of a colored LED, an accelerometer, IR receiv-ers, and a battery, which are molded into an edible, waterproof jelly to keep the circuitry protected without affecting the taste of the drink. The accelerometer calculates the number of sips a person takes and compares it with a timer to estimate their level of intoxication and change the color of the flashing LEDs.

The smart ice cubes could still be a useful device though, particularly for party-goers who need to make sure they don’t have one drink too many or bars that want to ensure their patrons stay safe.

The final Twilight Saga begins with Bella now a vampire learning to use her abilities. Her daughter, Renesmme is blossoming, but when someone sees Renesmme do something that makes them think that she was turned. This is reported to the Volturri, because it is a violation to turn a child and the penalty is death for both who turned the child into a vampire and the child, cause they deem a turned child too dangerous. Alice gets a vision of the Volturri coming after them, forcing The Cullens try to convince them that Renesmme is not a threat but battle is imminent and they call on friends and family to stand with them. Out of all the Twilight movies this is actually the best instalment it possesses a charm that the other films lacked, the ending is a good one for both die-hard fans and the average joe. A must watch!

Skyfall 9/10When Bond’s latest assignment goes gravely wrong and agents around the world are exposed, MI6 is

attacked forcing M to relocate the agency. These events cause her authority and position to be challenged by Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), the new Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee. With MI6 now compromised from both inside and out, M is left with one ally she can trust: Bond. 007 takes to the shadows - aided only by field agent, Eve (Naomie Harris) - following a trail to the mysterious Silva (Javier Bardem), whose lethal and hidden motives have yet to reveal themselves. When Casino Royale was released, many bond fans hated it, saying that it wasn’t bond but just an action film and that Daniel Craig wasn’t in the same league as Connery and Brosnan, and they were wrong obviously, well because I think that he was a fitting Bond. Casino Royale was excel-lent, Quantum I’m afraid was not, but Skyfall was brilliant, its builds up the Bond Charac-ter and leaves us wanting more, Bardem as the villain steals the show and the dignity of Fiennes rounds off a stellar cast. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and is probably one of the best Bond films ever made.

Metal Gear Rising: RevengeanceThis will not be the longest game you’ll ever play......but it will be

one of the most fast paced games you’ll ever play! This is not the typical Metal Gear game that everyone knows and

loves but don’t hate it untill you’ve tried it. Unlike previous versions of Metal Gear, where the objective is to mainly be silent and stealthy - like a true ninja warrior, Revengeance goes the other way the more you can chop and hack and slash and kick and do all kinds of awe-some stuff to get points to buy more upgrades to make your moves even more insane and awesome to watch - the better.

This is all action all the time, the only time the game slows down is during cut scenes, which thankfully give you time to breath. The action looks like something that’s orchestrated from chaos, but yet beautiful to watch, from running on missles to slowing down time and timing every slash when trying to get a “Zandatsu” in “Blade Mode”(You basically slash open a bad guy to steal his “battery/health” to replenish yours). Oh, and if you were wondering, you do still have your box to sneak around in..... Love it!

Here’s the story - The plot is set 4 years after Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns for the Patriots and the story focuses on Raiden - A cyborg ninja with an electrically charged katana blade(so freaking awe-some!) - And his fight against a military group called “Desperado Enterprises”(They are very bad!!! - they kidnap little kids and steal their brains and then they put the brains in cyborg terrorist things!).

Meatal gear Rising: Revengeance is the rebirth of a new “sub-genre” of Metal Gear and should be welcomed with open arms. The game looks amazing, sounds amazing and is amazing to play and has plenty of re-playability and I highly recommend it. The game is rated 18 and contains a lot of violence and strong language.
