Hospital Grade Testing
Cord Pull TestThe cord must remain securely fastened afterstraight pulls of 30 pounds, and rotating pulls (in a 3-inch circle) of 10 pounds for two hours.“Displacement of conductors, insulation, andouter jacket of the flexible cord AWG 18 SVTshall not exceed 1/32 inch. There shall be nocuts, rips, or tears in cord insulation.”
Heavy-duty cord stress is typical abuse forindustrial plugs and connectors. Levitonincreases the weight in the straight cord pulltest to 175 lbs. with AWG 14 ST and in therotating pull test to 20 lbs., ensuring positivestrain relief under industrial conditions.
Mechanical Drop Test A sample wired plug or connector is suspended horizontally by its attached cord, and released so that it impacts a hard woodsurface 45 inches below the point of suspension--repeated for 1300 cycles. “Thereshall be no breakage, deformation, or otherdamage which would interfere with the func-tioning of the device.”
Impact Test A wired plug or connector is subjected toimpact from a 10 lb. weight repeatedlydropped from a height of 18 inches. “Thereshall be no breakage, deformation or othereffect that may interfere with the function ofthe device.” Plugs and connectors are sub-jected to severe impacts in industrial settings. Therefore, Leviton exceeds the UL require-ment by dropping the weight from a height of36 inches.
500 lb. Crush TestA wired plug or connector is placed betweentwo steel plates and subjected to a force whichis steadily increased to 500 pounds. “Thereshall be no breakage, deformation or othereffect that may interfere with the function of thedevice.” Leviton knows that in real industrialenvironments, plugs and connectors arecrushed by forces exceeding 500 lbs. Weperform the crush test with a force of 2500 lbs.to ensure that our devices withstand the reallyheavy hits on the job.
Abrupt Removal of Plug TestA steel-bodied test plug with brass blades is inserted into the receptacle. A 10-poundweight dropped from at least 24 inchesyanks the plug out of the receptacle.Thistest is done eight times with the receptaclerotated into different positions to create thegreatest stress on its face and contact. Afterthis, the grounding contact must retain afour ounce, 0.184” diameter grounding pin, with the receptacle face down, for oneminute. There shall be no breakage of thereceptacle that interferes with the receptaclefunction or the integrity of the enclosure.Thereceptacle shall maintain the grounding pathintegrity through the receptacle.
Ground Pin Retention TestThe grounding contact of the receptacle isconditioned by 20 insertions with a .204”oversized pin. After conditioning, a 0.184”diameter pin shall be inserted in the ground-ing contact which shall be capable of sup-porting at least four ounces for one minute.
4oz.+
Power Blade Retention TestA test plug with oversized blades of .075” isinserted into the current-carrying opening ofthe receptacle for 20 conditioning cycles. After the conditioning cycles, the contactshall be capable of supporting for oneminute 11/2 lbs. secured to a single .055”thick solid steel blade without holes.
1.5 lb.Assembly Security TestA force of 100 pounds is applied through the slots to the base of the receptacle while the yokeis supported at its screw mounting positions. There must be no cracking of base or permanentdeformation of yoke.
In addition...Leviton Hospital Grade receptacles undergo these demanding tests:

Frequently Asked Q
uestionsFrequently Asked Questions
1. How does a surge protector work? A Surge Protector, sometimes called
a TVSS (transient voltage surge suppressor); Diverts surge currents away from equipment by creating a low impedance path to ground.
 Typical components include: MOV: Metal-Oxide
Varistor
 SAD: Silicon Avalanche Diodes
 Gas Tubes
 LCR filters
2. How do surges enter a building? Surges Enter A System In Two Ways: Conducted (Directly On Lines Entering
or Leaving A System)
 Radiated (Indirectly Via Electro-magnetic Fields)
3. What is IEEEC62.41?
The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers have developed C62.41 59to provide recommended guidelines on surge exposure levels with respect to location. The standard amplitudes and wave forms are the basis for testing surge receptacles.
4. Does the NEC cover installation of Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors?
Yes. NEC Article 285 TVSS Protection covers short circuit rating and installation and connection of TVSS or Surge Protection panels.
5. What are the three basic types of occupancy sensor technologies?
Passive Infrared (PIR) 'Line-of-sight' device that responds to infraredchanges in a workspace.
Multi-Technology single unit that combines PIR and Ultrasonic to controllighting loads in a workspace.
6. Can occupancy sensors save energy and reduce power bills?
Yes. Since lighting accounts for 50% of the electricity usage in a typical commercial or institutional facility turning those loads off when not required can have a considerable impact on the bottom line.
7. Are adjustments required to make surethe lights do not go off while the workspace is occupied?
Most commercial grade occupancy sensors are self adjusting. After initial installation the device monitors occupancy patterns and automatically compensates for 'real-time' usage and sets itselfaccordingly.

Remote Supervisor Provides Clear Indication of Protection StatusAll Leviton Panel mounted SPD’s are equipped with real-time diagnostics that indicate protectionstatus. However, when these units are mounted in electrical closets, or other out-of-the-way locations,a diagnostic alert might not be seen or heard for some time.
The 52000-RS Remote Supervisor can relay protection failure or power interruption warnings fromone or more Leviton panel-mounted SPD’s. Warnings are provided by an optically coupled sensor anddata lines comprising up to 5000 feet of #20 or #22 twisted-pair wiring. One Remote Supervisor canmonitor up to six panel-mounted SPD’s. The Remote Supervisor provides both a visual and audiblealert, which can be silenced at the press of a button. The unit is equipped with a test circuit, anddesigned for surface mounting. It draws power from any 120V source through a six-foot line cord.
