Provincial Hospital and the nextday he was transferred to GrooteSchuur Hospital. A CAT scan re-vealed that Petri’s C5 vertebrae onhis neck had been ruptured.OnFriday 27December he under-

from the waist down. She says hecan move his neck, shoulders andarms. He is still in ICU at GrooteSchuur’s spinal-cord section.Audrey says shewas able to visit him three

She says Petri, who has sincepicked up an infection, will remain in hospi-tal for another month or so, and thereafterhe will be moved to a rehabilitation facility

in Mitchells Plain. He is, however, respond-ing well to antibiotics. On 20 December Darren Francis, assistant

director of communications for WesternCapeGovernmentHealth, issued a public no-tice titled:Prevent DivingAccidents this Holi-day Season – Dive Feet First.Thenotice says: “GrooteSchuurHospital’s

Acute Spinal Cord Injury Unit admits and

treats an average of seven pa-tients every year who sustain se-vere neck injuries secondary todivingaccidents.Themajorityofthese injured patients, mostlyyoungpeople, will bepermanent-ly paralysed from the neck down(quadriplegic).“Western Cape Government

Health would like to encouragepeople todive feet first.Headfirstdiving, whether with out-stretchedarmsornot, isextreme-ly risky and is not enough to pre-vent neck injuries.“We would also like to urge

people to be careful when body-surfing.“If someone is injured in a div-

Approval formallsdraggingHEDDA MITTNER

Theproposals for the development of twonew shopping malls in Hermanus whichwere recommended by council in April2012 for approval by the Department ofEnvironmental Affairs and Developmen-tal Planning (DEA&DP), are still beingheld up at provincial level.

The two developmentswaiting for final ap-proval are Retail Africa’s Whale Coast Vil-lage Mall, to be built on the 12 hectare sitebetween CTM and Engen, and PropergationEstate’s Overberg Mall on a 10 hectare siteat Hoek van de Berg in Hawston.

The DEA&DP issued partial environmen-tal authorisation for both developments on6 January, subject to compliance with cer-tain conditions. This means that both devel-opments have been given the go-ahead interms of environmental legislation, subjectto a period of appeal.

Notification of intent to appeal has to belodged within 20 days, and the appeal mustbe submitted within 30 calendar days afterthe lapsing of the 20-day period.

“Land-use approval will only be finalisedby the DEA&DP once the appeal process in

terms of the National Environmental Man-agement Act (NEMA) has been completed,”says Riaan Kuchar, Overstrand Municipali-ty seniormanager: TownPlanning&Proper-ty Administration.

Jannie Kruger, CEO of Retail Africa, sayshe hopes the process will gainmomentum inthe new year. “However, it is a very compre-hensiveandthoroughprocessandother legalaspects such as rezoning and adjustments tothe spatial developmental framework stillhave to be completed. In the meantime weare being patient.”

RetailAfricahadapplied for authorisationfor a retail facility with a total footprint of38 900m², but authorisationwas only grantedfor 27 800m², with the option of expandeingin phases as the market demands, up to amaximum of 38 900m² by 2024.

In order to secure their position, Checkersrecently bought 2½of the 12 hectare site, andwill be incorporated into the master plan ofthe development project.

Krugerhassaidearlier that theprojectwillincorporate the strong heritage character ofHermanus. “The mall will reflect the typicalCape vernacular, combining a fisherman’svillage feel with elements drawn from thesurrounding Hemel-en-Aarde winelands ar-

ea.” He added that the Whale Coast VillageMall will be “a high-quality, low-impactbuilding with well-landscaped spaces thatwill harmonise with the scenic surrounds ofHermanus”, in keeping with other Retail Af-rica projects such as the Constantia VillageinCapeTownand the IreneVillageMall nearPretoria.

Lambertus van Zyl, CEO of PropergationEstates, says the process will probably dragon for at least another year. They intend tolodgeanappealbecausetheywereonlygrant-ed environmental authorisation for a foot-print of 10 000m² for the Overberg Mall inHawston. “That is too low for our purposes– the site allows for a regional shopping cen-tre with a surface area of 35 000m² and thepossibility of extending up to 70 000m².”

Van Zyl believes the location of the pro-posed Overberg Mall is advantageous to thewhole community as it will ensure a moreeven spread of traffic and ease congestion to-wards Hermanus.

“If a regional centre is too close to theCBD,itwillhaveadetrimental impactonbusiness-es. All retail in Hermanus will come undermajor pressure and the vacancies that arecreated will eventually be occupied by bot-tom-end retailers.”

Stormers kies Hermanus bo enige ander plekJANHENDRIK COETZER

On Friday 10 January, shark-bitesurvivor Thomas Browne, wasback on his surfboard less than amonthafterbeingbittenbyagreatwhite shark. He was accompaniedfor this momentous step, whichtook place at Kammabaai, by agroup of close surfing friends andhis family.

While out for a surf at Die Plaat on16 December, Thomas was bitten onthe back of his left thigh and theshark’s lower jaw bit into his surf-board.

It seems the shark bit onto a fin ofthe surfboard which may explainwhy it released Thomas’s leg andthen swam away. The shark left sixdeep teeth marks on his leg.

Quick thinking and lots of adrena-line helped Thomas to catch a waveback to shore, whereafter his friendswere able to get him to MediclinicHermanus in good time. The attackhappened early Monday morningand by Wednesday of the same week

Thomas was out of hospital, much tothe relief of his parents Sandy andJeremy Browne.

On the evening of Friday 10 Janu-ary, Alison Kock, research directorfor Shark Spotters, Thomas Browneand Dr Shaun Luyt, an anaesthetistat Mediclinic Hermanus, chatted toabout25surfersandswimmersaboutthe localwater conditions and shark-relatedmattersat theKioskonOnrusbeach.

Jeremy Browne (Thomas’s father)says: “Thomas talked about his re-cent attack. Alison from Shark Spot-ters chatted in detail about whitesharks and answered questions.Shaun, who attended toTom’s opera-tion, chatted about medical respons-es to a shark attack. It was an infor-mal gathering at the Kiosk arrangedby Graham Thjabring.”

He says Alison explained the be-havioural patterns of great whitesharks and migratory movement ofsharks.

Thesearesomeof thepointsAlisoncovered:

) Shark attacks in general – only

350 worldwide since data have beencollected.

) Chumming and shark incidents– no direct link to more attacks.

) Shark figures are actually de-clining at the seal colonies even withcage-diving operators chumming.

) 40sharkshavebeentaggedoffer-ing great new data.

) Cameras have been fitted tosharks showing that sharks will in-vestigate everything in their envi-ronment and are very inquisitive.

) Shark attacks are more oftenjust sharks being inquisitive.

RoadworksonR320still inlimboandworkersunpaidHEDDA MITTNER

The roadworkers who were em-ployed by Vusela Constructionon the R320 roadworks projectbetween Hermanus and Cale-don, have still not been paidsince October 2013. The compa-nywasplacedunder liquidationby theWesternCapeHighCourton 6 December.

The department of transport andpublic works has terminated itscontractwithVusela Constructionand senior operations managerAnton Nell, said on Wednesdaythat the negotiation process witha new contractor is almost com-plete.“We’ll be making an announce-

ment regarding thenewcontractorwithin the next week or two, andhope to resume construction at thebeginning of February.”The upgrade of the R320 which

linksHermanus to Caledon entailsthe tarring of the dirt road acrossits entire length, but by the end ofOctober last year, only about4,5 kmofthe16 kmhadbeensealed.

The work started in March 2012and was scheduled for completionin September 2014.A spokesperson for the road

workers, Anthony Wells, said theworkers, who are all local labour-ers fromtheCaledonarea, receivedtheir last pay at the end of Octoberlast year.“We suspected that all was not

well with the company as far backasApril 2013,” saidWells. “Ourpaywas often late and there was a lackof equipment on site.”According to Wells the workers

were called in on 5 November fora meeting where they were told bythe foreman that Vusela Construc-tion had been placed under provi-sional liquidation and theywere tocease work until further notice. At another meeting a week later

they were given claim forms fortheirNovember andDecember sal-aries, which they were instructedtocompleteandhand inat theCale-don police station.“Approximately 40 to 50workers

were left without an income lessthan two months before Christ-mas,” said Wells bitterly, “and we

still haven’t received anything. Itisveryunfair that thepeopleofCal-edon and their families have beenleft to suffer like this.”Wells said their contracts with

Vusela were for the period fromFebruary 2012 to September 2014.He is hopeful that the workers willbe re-employedby thenewcontrac-tor.“The employment contracts of

all Vusela’s employees were sus-pended by the operation of law onthe liquidation of Vusela,” says Si-valutchmee Moodliar from SanekTrust Recovery Services (Pty) Ltd,one of the three liquidators ap-pointed by the WC High Court.“In terms of the insolvency legis-

lation, these employees’ claims forarrear salaries and wages againstthe company in liquidation arepreferent andwill rankprior to theclaims of trade and other concur-rent creditors.“The employees have been ad-

vised to prove such claims againstVusela at the firstmeeting of credi-tors which will be convened by theMaster of the High Court withinthe coming weeks.”

MAIN ROAD RESURFACING BEGINS: Main Road between Harbour Road and Marine Drive was closed to traffic yesterdaymorning at 06:00 and will remain closed for resurfacing workuntil the end of February. The sidewalks with crossovers for pedestrians will remain open for the duration of the project. Vehicles will be diverted to alternative routes from a number of intersections on Main Road entering Hermanus on the R43 fromOnrus and Stanford, while businesses in the closed section ofMain Road will have to cope with supply deliveries from adjacent streets. These roadworks were originally scheduled for October 2013, but the municipality bore the brunt of an outburstby business owners who feared they could lose up to 40% oftheir annual income during this busy period. Although the roadupgrading was welcomed, it was the lack of public participationon the timing which angered the business community. Aftermuch negotiation with council, headed by the Hermanus Business Chamber, the timing agreed to was now, after the schoolholidays. For maps indicating the alternative routes, and earlierarticles published, go to www.hermanustimes.co.za.

HighSchool, herewecome!HEDDA MITTNER

Approximately 184 learnersfrom various primary schoolsin the Overstrand have en-rolled for Grade 8 at Her-manus High School.

On Orientation Day on Tues-day the new arrivals gathered inthe hall with their grade headAnneke Harms and members ofthe matric council to find outwhat lies instore for themduringtheir first week in high school.

In keeping with tradition, the“initiates” have to don an A3-sized cardboard nameboard witha photo of themselves at the ageof five or younger and wear out-landish hairstyles – this year it’sa bun on the one side and threeponytails on the other for the girls and astraight parting with hair flattened by gel forthe boys.

Each learner received an instructions &guidelines booklet which they have to studyuntil they know all the rules and regulations, the names of all the members of staff and the

matric council as well as the layout of theschool, the school song and the sot-lied.

They will not be allowed to wear theirschoolblazersuntil theyhaveearnedtherightby passing their “blazer test” on Monday.

The Grade 8s were divided into groups onTuesday and in about two weeks there will

be a newcomers’ concert where each grouphas to perform a song fromHigh SchoolMusi-cal in front of the whole school.

Clara Lawrence, a Grade 8 learner, whocame from Hermanus Primary School, saidon Tuesday that she was very excited to bein high school, “but also a bit petrified”.

Referring to the concert and another Her-manus High tradition where Grade 8s haveto invite a matric learner to the Valentine’sBall in front of the whole school during assem-bly, Lawrence said: “It’s embarrassing but al-so a lot of fun.”

Ready for their first day of high school on Wednesday and dressed according to a strictinitiation “dress code” were (from left) Grace Page, Keelan Nel, Tayla Gordon, KeeleyBrowne, Chloé Taljaard and Khanya Mgwedane. PHOTOS: KERRY VAN RENSBURG

Food for thoughtOf all the towns vying to host the Stormers’annual preseason training camp,Hermanushas become the outright favourite – becauseof the bounty and beauty the area offers;because of the welcome the players receivewhen they are here; and last but not leastbecause of the fabulous field at HermanusPrimary, where the players are put throughtheir training sessions. And they don’t intendlooking elsewhere for a better field.“We are here to stay,” said the Stormers

team manager, Chippie Solomon. This is food for thought. The top condition

of the sports field at Hermanus Primary wasoneof themaindeciding factors for theirdecision. The surface, according to Solomon, makes it a safe field to play on as the teamcannot afford to lose any players due to injuries while training. He says their relationshipwith the school is such that they can pick upthe phone, confirm dates, and when they arrive all is sorted and arranged. What a feather in the cap for the school.

Andwhatagreat spinoff forotherbusinessesin town and surrounds. But it takes effort and commitment to keep

the field in tiptop shape for a handful oftraining sessions.Which ispart of the school’snormal commitment to its sports grounds, said school principal Barry Cilliers.Whenexcellence is an everyday standard,

the benefits and returns flowalmost naturally.

Why were fireworks allowed on 4 January?I read the article ‘Vuurwerkherrie bars los’in theHermanus Timesof 9/01/14andrealizedthat notmuchhas changed in the 14 years I’velived here. There is cruel, avoidable distressfor all types of animals, the loss of animalsand a fire hazard due to illegal and so-calledlegal fireworks.TheFireDepartmentseemstobealittlecon-

fusedas towhenNewYear shouldbe celebrat-ed. Giving permission for a display on 4 Janu-ary without notifying the public would meanthat they expect us to sedate our animals foraboutaweekeverydayandnight toaccommo-date a visitor who seems to have some clout. The first fireworkwent off on 30 December,

2013 at 21:25. Neighbours down from Potchef-stroom lost two cats on the night of 4 January

and we are on the other side of Voëlklip. Oneof the cats only found its way back to theirholiday house the evening before they left togo home on 11 January.I am not alone in wanting to knowwhat the

actual procedure is for giving permission forthe use of fireworks. Is a meeting held aboutit or is it enough to have a beach front proper-ty? Please can Joe Schoeman explain this pro-cedure and the criteria followed, if any, to theratepayers in a transparent manner. Why permission can’t be given for a half

hour before and after midnight to celebrateNewYear, I don’t know, or arewe celebratingfireworks?

SALLY DOVEVOËLKLIP

Joe Schoeman, division commander:Fire & Rescue Services, responds:

The main criteria for the discharge of fire-works outside the designated areas, includes:

. Application must be in writing and ad-dressed to the Chief: Fire & Rescue.

. Fireworks are only permitted if they areconducted by a professional pyro-technician orlicensed competent person.

. Permisissionmustbeobtainedfromthepo-lice department’s explosives unit and be sub-mitted with the application.

. A site inspection is then conducted and asafety risk assessment for the area is done.

. The applicant as well as the technicianwho is going to be in charge of the fireworksmust complete an indemnity form and take re-

sponsibility for irregularities or claims.. Applications are approved with strict con-

ditions to ensure that adequate safety proce-dures are followed.

. It is the responsibility of the applicants toinform the community/neighbours of their in-tention to use fireworks on a specific day andtime, and to handle objections.

. The law does not require a municipalityto inform residents about approved fireworks, but it is expected that applicants do so out ofcourtesy to their neighbours.

Only three beaches in the Overstrand are al-lowed fireworks on New Year’s Eve between22:00 and 01:00 – Grotto East, Hawston andKleinmond – because they are deemed the safestareas for uncontrolled fireworks.

Some down time for the language issue?I refer to the letter by Summerell in theHermanus Times of 9 January 2014 regard-ing the above. The ongoing polemic relating to the rep-

resentation of English versus Afrikaansin our local newspaper is becoming triteand repetitive.Surely, this is a matter for the Editor to

handle and in my opinion it is being ade-quately dealt with by that office.I am however concerned with another

issue pertaining to this communication.Am I being oversensitive or is there a

nuance of individual/language/culturalsuperiority in the contribution of yourcorrespondent? On reading her letter carefully, it is

clear that a derogatory attitude towardsAfrikaans is displayed, especially in thelast paragraph. She is obviously of theview that the English language (her lan-guage) is far superior to Afrikaans. If thatis her opinion, so be it.It still doesnot giveher the right to refer

to my language – “colloquial Afrikaans”- in an offensive way.I would suggest that she offers an imme-

diate apology to your Afrikaans readersand that, in future contributions, shethinks twice before allowing her prejudic-es to show.Met dank en goeie wense in Afrikaans

– ook aan u korrespondentGEORGE WATERMEYER

Barbara Summerell responds:I must congratulate you on your mastery

of the English language to interpret nuanc-es. I wish I was anywhere as proficient inthe Afrikaans language.

Language is not one of my strong points.

My own is so complicated that I have usedup my language proficiency on strugglingwith English. I am Celtic by origin.

I assume you are new in the Overberg.Welcome. Enjoy. Be happy.

From the editor:Hermanus Timeshas received (and pub-

lished) a number of comments on the ba-lance of language in our publication.Although it is always uplifting to know

we are part of a community that caresenough to keep sending a continuousstream of letters (and SMSes) – whetherthese be congratulatory, challenging ortongue-in-cheek, and voicing opinions ona variety of issues – let’s give the languageissue some down time.We do our utmost to ensure a good and

balanced read everyweek, despite the lan-guage “challenge”.But, on this topic, we do need to explain

why the index headings on the classifiedpages have suddenly changed to Afri-kaans only, when they had always beenbilingual until a few weeks ago. One rea-der took it upon himself to count thenumberofEnglishadsintheclassifiedsec-tion tostrengthenhisquery/complaint re-garding the sudden absence of English in-dex headings. This is due to a new ad booking system

implemented across the Boland Mediagroup. The request, to bring bilingualheadings back is being addressed.Although the timing of the system

switch-over made our explanation to thisreaderall themoredifficult, wedoaskthatyou bear with us while it is being workedon.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

Letters column provides insights into strange workings of human mindSometimes the letters column of the Her-manus Times supplies surprising food forthought as well as extraordinary insightsinto the strange workings of the humanmind. Today was such a day.A certain gentleman wrote about traffic

congestion caused by road blocks held dur-ing the festive season. As one started toread, onewas inclined to sympathise – poorman, delayed in his quest to go shopping– what an inconvenience! However, thepoorman,delayedfor27ter-

ribly long minutes at the inappropriateroadblock, was discovered to have out-standing traffic violations! One wondershowanyonecanbearrogantenoughtocom-plain about a road block when they are thevery reason for the inconvenience to every-one else. Sir, pay your tickets and such aroad block will not be necessary. Not only did the poor man have to wait

27 long minutes, but when he was finallyreleased to go (his face having reflectedmany different hues of anger, by his ownadmission), he furiously spun his frontwheels inanger (byhis ownadmission) and

shot out into the traffic because, he says, none of the traffic officers assisted him inrejoiningthequeueof traffic.Extraordinar-ily hemanages to be surprised when the of-ficers pursue him and give himyet anotherticket. This, after he had earlier stated thattheir concern should be the safety of driv-ers, not the collection of cash. Driving withsquealing wheels into traffic does not seemto register in themindof this poorput-upongentleman as a somewhat unsafe activity. Finally he tells us that he is looking for-

ward to his day in court when he expectsto have ‘fun’ detailing the poor judgementof theHermanusTrafficOfficials.Well, Iamnot sure how much fun it is going to be topay his latest fine (he has after all made anadmission of guilt in a public newspaper)and why anyone in authority should wastetheir valuable time listening to his strangeversion of officials doing their duty as theyshould.

CLINTON D’OLIVEIRA

Jan Cilliers reponds:The author of the above letter is right; the

human mind is indeed a strange place. Heonly read in my letter what he wanted to readand then came to some weird conclusions. The case in point is that he or she didn’t seethe wood for the trees. In his own words itwas an inappropriate roadblock. He alsodidn’t take cognisance of the fact that I men-tioned alleged offences. He also assumed thatit was unsafe to spin my wheels. If, and onlyif, it was an unsafe hasty departure, it wasthe direct result of the traffic department notproperly managing a roadblock in peak traf-fic in a safe manner.

He also thought I admitted guilt. He alsothought that my face reflected anger and notfrustration as I said. There is also a differ-ence between spinning wheels and a squealfromtyres– thewordquantify comes tomind. No sir, although my letter was writtentongue-in-cheek, I think you should look atthebiggerpictureofsafetyonourroads .Howmany deaths are caused by spinning wheelscausing damage to the road and how manyare because of excessive speeding and/ordrunken driving? I think you should re-as-sess your criticism.

Genoeglike weer totherfs toeslaan

The weatherman says now that the holiday is over and thechildren are back at school, it is time to look after the gardenand plant some flowers or trees, as the weather is perfect forplanting. A few clouds are expected today and Friday, but forthe next few days, sunshine weather can be expected.

She made a mental note of it but soon for-got.

In October, a chance meeting with an oldfriendwhohadbreast cancer finallyprompt-ed her to go for a check-up.

Anultrasound revealed a lumpandabiop-sy confirmed that the tumour was malig-nant (cancerous).

“This was a curve ball and I knew that Ineeded to be calm and stay positive, andaboveall trustandbelieve thatmynewfoundfaith in Jesus Christ will lead me throughthis,” says Lize.

After the initial shock, the financial reali-ty came crashing down on her.

Lize is a freelance artist and also has aslimming treatment business. Both theseprovide an erratic income and she does nothave a medical aid plan.

“My only option was to use a state-fundedhospital. I was referred to Tygerberg Hospi-tal,butthefirstavailabledate foralumpecto-my was at the end of January this year.”

Then something amazinghappened.Neliaand André Schreuder in Johannesburgheard about her predicament from LizetteVoigt, a mutual friend.

André,whohad recently been throughhisownbattlewithcancer, wasconcernedabouta waiting period of four months to have theoperation.

He promptly decided to make a donationon behalf of his company, Villa Crop Protec-tion, to pay for the operation.

LizewasadmittedtoMediclinicPanoramain December, her tumour was removed andshe is back home and recovering well.

“I realised that the operation was madepossible not only through the amazing kind-ness and generosity of my friends Lizette,André and Nelia who paid for it, but alsothrough the power of prayer.

“I am overwhelmed and forever thankfulto my friends and church for their prayersandblessed towitnesshowourLorduses an-gels to revealHis goodness and performmir-acles.”

It was an enchanted evening when members, friends andsponsors gathered for the Lombardi Senior Centre’s endofyear Christmas function held at the end of last year beforeclosing for the holidays. The theme of the party was MatricClass of 1990. Jenny Sauls, manager of Lombardi, said itwas because many of the members of the centre did nothave an opportunity to finish matric, as they had to work,so they were never part of a matric class. But when NelsonMandela was freed from prison in 1990, it was a symbolic“graduation” for all of them. Jenny thanked the many people who contributed to the success of the evening. Kittens dumpedin refuse bagJANINE VAN DER RIET

Five newborn kittens tied up in a blackrefuse bag were discovered at the Stan-ford municipal dump on 29 Decemberby a resident from Stanford.

Nico Steneveld couldn’t believe hiseyeswhenheopenedthebaganddiscov-ered the tiny wriggling kittens. Whenhe found them they were only ten daysold and their eyes were still closed.

He took the kittens to the Stanford VetClinic where they are being cared forby staff with support from the StanfordAnimal Welfare Society (SAWS).

MercedesBenzCLA: thehip sedanHANJO STIER

Caution caution, I’m about to go intogrumpy-old-man mode. What happened tocommon courtesy and goodmanners?Whydo our lives move quicker and quicker?Who needs all these new cars we have onour market? Take the new Mercedes-BenzCLA, for example.

Who is it aimed at? Unconventional, young-er, lifestyle-orientated customers, ladderclimbers and innovators who are looking fora confident, sporty, untamed, compact C-seg-ment sedan with sporty, powerful design lan-guage and an aggressive, stand-out, dynamicedge to it – according to Mercedes-Benz SouthAfrica. So what’s wrongwith the C-Class?Well, yes,

M-B execs were quick to point out, the slightlylarger, rear-wheel-drive sedan is more re-

strained and classic so the new CLA is in noway a C-Class substitute. In fact, it looks, feelsand drives differently, for customers whower-en’t considering this brand before, also finan-cially.Isn’t that being greedy? Not really, they

would argue, by following the daring CLS de-signs with a lower price tag, this car lures acompletely different *cough* younger *cough*audience and hopefully they’ll stay with thethree-pointed star. Merc aims to lead luxurysegments by 2020, locally by as early as 2015.Really. How? Progressive and exciting prod-

ucts, like thisCLAwithaworld-recordCd (aer-odynamic) value of just 0.22. All engines arestate-of-the-art, turbo-charged four cylinderswhich comply with Euro 6 emissions regula-tions; one more than they have to. All petrolsare also BlueDirect (direct injection) motors.Sounds complicated. What else? All CLAs

have anEco start/stop system to further lowertheiremissionsandconsumption.Otherstand-ard items, besides most available electric andautomatic goodies, are a dynamic DirectSteersystem, Attention Assist drowsiness detectionand Collision Assist system. Is that all? Of course not. The CLA is packed

with safety features to the tune of five Euro-NCAP stars and an advanced award, it boastsa premium interior with lots of individualisa-tion options, differing specification levels andahostofconnectivitysolutions–moreofwhichwill be added in the near future.Right, which models are available? For you

Sir, CLA180 and CLA200 turbo-petrol(90kw/200Nm and 115kW/250Nm) or CLA220CDI turbo-diesel (125 kW/350Nm) with either6-speed manual or 7-speed double-clutch auto-maticgearbox(includingeco,sportandmanualmodes with shift paddles).Bothpetrolcarsclaimaverage fuelconsump-

tion of around 5.5F/100 km with about 130 gCO²/kmwhile the dieselmanages 4.5 and 117 g.Allof themhit100km/hineighttoninesecondsand can reach 210 to 230 km/h. The boot takes470F, the fuel tank 50+6F, maximum load is525 kg and the turning radius is 11m.For absolute speed freaks, there’s also the

CLA45 AMG which assaults you with anotherworld-beating 265 kW and can scare Porsche’sby hitting 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. After sam-pling the dynamic CLA range on our launchroute, we were given the chance to fling theAMG around an airfield – amazing.GoodHeavens.Howmuch?TheCLA45AMG

isaboutR675 000andslightly soldoutwhile theCLA180 costs R348 700, CLA200 is R372 200 andthe CLA220 CDI will set you back R397 600. Allcarsaresoldwitha6-year/100 000kmfullmain-tenance plan anda choice of seven exterior col-ours.From our short drive and all these impres-

sive specs I can confirm that the CLA is not anoldman’scar, especiallyagrumpyone.Judgingby the public’s reaction,Mercedes has certain-ly hit their mark and will attract a lot of hipnew clients. And for clients with a new hip, there’s always the C-Class.Galimoto Media

The second of Volvo’s threemuch-anticipated concept carsis the new Volvo Concept XCCoupé. Inspired by the design ofmodern sports equipment anddemonstrating the safety capa-bilities of Volvo’s new ScalableProduct Architecture, it is a so-phisticated and capable car forpeople with an active lifestyle.

“Those who love gravity sportsfreely seek new thrills and chal-lenges. To ensure that they makeit back in one piece, they preferhigh-performance equipment thatoffers the ultimate sense of free-domandprotection,” saysThomasIngenlath, Senior Vice PresidentDesign of Volvo Car Group.“TheVolvoConcept XCCoupé is

perfectly in tune with this activelifestyle. Its capability and protec-tion is cleverly integrated into thesophisticated looks. Concept XCCoupé is readyandwilling tobringyou into the adventure zone andback,” he adds. The three concept cars are de-

signed to demonstrate vital ele-ments of the company’s newScala-ble Product Architecture (SPA):namely the confident stance, theperfect proportions and the mostprominent design signatures.“Volvo’s Concept XC Coupé also

shows how clever engineeringmakesitpossibleforustoreinforceour world-leading safety withoutcompromising design, size orweight. Thanks to the extensiveuse of high-strength boron steelandstructureswithnew, ingeniousdecoupling, we canmake SPA cars

morecompactandsaferat thesametime,” says Ingenlath.The two-door, four-seater Volvo

ConceptXCCoupéhasastrongcon-nection with its sibling, the VolvoConcept Coupé. However, the larg-er 21-inch wheels, the more accen-tuated wheel-arches and the tallerroofline all contribute to amore ro-

bust impression and a fuller, capa-ble look. The extended distance between

the dashboard and the front axle isstill a very powerful visual ele-ment.Thecapable stance is empha-sised by details such as the newbonnet and a beltline that spans anelegant bow along the length of the

car.The connection with modern,

high-tech sports gear is highlypresent in the concept car. Amongthe sources of inspiration for thedesign team is the Swedish compa-ny POC, which develops high-techprotective gear for gravity sportsathletes.

“Several orange details and exte-rior graphics in combination withbold use of matte rubber mould-ings, which cover the rear end ofthecar, addto thehighly functionalexpression of the design,” saysIngenlath. To strike the right balance be-

tweenaestheticsand functionality, the design team has also given tra-ditionalSUVelements,suchassidemouldings and skid plates, a mod-ern interpretation. They are moreintegrated into the sleek design, ly-ing flush with the surroundingbody areas.Just like Volvo Concept Coupé,

the face of the Volvo Concept XCCoupé is characterisedbyanew to-pography on the bonnet and the“floating” grille, flanked by head-lights featuringnewT-shapedDRLlight guides. The rear light signa-ture is also a distinctive element inthe new design direction of VolvoCars.“Both concept cars showhowwe

canshapeourcarsfromnowon.Weadd emotional value to the Volvobrand with the calm, confidentbeauty that is thehallmarkofScan-dinavian design,” says Ingenlath.Volvo Cars paved the way for a

completely new segment by intro-ducing the V70 Cross Country in1997. The range has been continu-ously developed and extendedsince then.Presently, it spans from the Vol-

voV40CrossCountry, via theXC60and XC70, to the XC90.“With the Volvo Concept XC

The aggressive new Lexus RC Fcoupe – equipped with new 5.0-litre engine with power wellabove 330 kW (450 hp) – will belaunchedattheNorthAmericanInternational Auto Show onJanuary 14.

Themodelhasbeenstyled forop-timum high speed stability to sup-port themostpowerfulV8perform-ance car ever developed by Lexus. The RC F is based on the spectacu-lar new RC coupe revealed at theTokyo Motor Show in November. It has wider wheels and tyres, anactive rear wing, air scoops, cool-ing ducts and carbon-fibre compo-nents, each delivering what Lexusdescribes as “functional beauty”.“The form of each component is

carefully designed to contribute toperformance,” Lexus RC F chiefengineer Yukihiko Yaguchi said.“Unique air outlets in the hood

and rear section of the front fend-ers contribute to optimum enginecoolingandhandlingstability, andcreate an aggressive look that im-mediately conveys the expectationof a dynamic driving experience.”The signature Lexus spindle

grille dominates the front of theRCF and encompasses one singleF-patterninitsmesh, fromthebon-net line to the lower lip.Thebonnetis higher than that of the RC andhelps create a powerful flared pro-file suited to an F model.Ducts beneath the front bumper

and fenders and strategicallyplaced aerodynamic stabilisingfins create a stance which furtheridentifies the F model.Airoutletsat therearof the front

fender formthe shapeof anLwhenthey merge with side sill exten-sions, while stacked trapezoidalquad-outlet tailpipes at the rearadd further aggression. The RC F has taken design cues

from the Lexus LFA supercar. An

active rear wing deploys from theRCF’s deckat speeds over 80 km/hand retracts at less than 40 km/hto enhance the coupe’s lines atstandstill. Three variations of 10-spoke 19” forged aluminiumwheelsareavailablebygrade.Twoare machine polished and on theHigh Plus grade the wheels arehand polished by a craftsman. The striking cockpit-like interi-

or of Lexus RC F complements the

aggressive exterior. Unique com-ponents include the meters, steer-ing wheel, seats, ornamentationand pedals. The instrument panelis dominated by a switchable cen-tral dial which changes accordingto the four selectable drivingmodes. The information, colour ofthedisplayandsize of text all alter.RC F debuts a Lexus-first ellipti-

cal cross-section thick-grip steer-ing wheel with optimum place-

ment of paddle gear shifts.All-new high back seats with an

embossed F on the headrests havebeen styled to resemble tight-fit-ting athletic sportswear and to of-fer similar levels of support. Theseats are available in a selection offive leather trims.Outstanding new L-shaped rub-

ber slits in the brake and accelera-tor pedals combine form and func-tion by providing better foot grip.

Awet 18 for Erniein HermanusCILENE BEKKER

The Hermanus Golf Club saw its fair shareof who’s who playing golf during the season, which also included a foursome made up ofErnie Els, Dr Johann Rupert, Schalk Burgersnr, and Els’s brother-in-law.Their friendly round of 18 holes took place

on 10 January after the rainy week whichsawthecoursehaving to close for threedays.“Wemeasured 205 mmof rain,” says SharonSleigh, club manager. The wet course did nothing to deter these

keen golfers from playing. “We’re just hereto enjoy and hit the ball,” was the responsefrom Els when advised of the conditions. He has since returned to Florida.According to Sleigh they had a very good

season overall, with a tally of 6 982 18-holerounds played inDecember. “The number ofvisitors rounds hit a record high of 3 500 inDecember.Thisisalmost500upfromourpre-vious record of 3 070 in 2011.”

Wet greens did not deter Ernie Els from enjoying a foursome at the Hermanus GolfClub in the company of Dr Johann Rupert,Schalk Burger snr and Els’s brotherinlaw.
