Here's how fantasy sports became a billion dollar industry Established in the late 2000s, fantasy sports were nothing but just a new trendy thing available. Enlisted as a gambling sport, the game didn’t get the kind of recognition it deserves as it was not easily available and the government didn’t permit its citizens to play this game. The best fantasy apps of that time didn't give up and today, the fantasy gaming industry is a billion dollar industry in India. The journey hasn’t been a kind one, the abuse, the ignorance and the insult that all the brand ambassadors and the companies faced because of being a game that is full of risk is enormous. On top of that, the government hasn’t really lifted the ban or declared it to be a legal game. The Supreme Court of India gave them the permission to run the business but the apps are still not available on Google Play Store. Thus, the users are not given the freedom that they deserve. After so much struggle, the fantasy organizations have managed to send the right message to their customers that yes, it is a game of risk but it has nothing to do with gambling or with fixing. Legends of the games like MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli and others were appointed as the brand ambassadors of the game and when they endorsed playing fantasy games online, users showed interest and slowly fell in love with the game. Everyone realized that it is a game of skill and has nothing to do with gambling or fixing. On top of that, they were earning a lot of money from it by just applying their skill and knowledge about the game. Multiple cricket fantasy apps started giving heavy discounts and it encouraged more users to join the game but then the pandemic struck the Indian subcontinent. As sports were completely shut down for quite some time, the industry was going through a really tough time. A lot of companies started introducing Ludo, Teen Patti and other household games and that literally worked wonders for the industry. When many of them lost their job because of the pandemic, fantasy sports helped them earn a lot of money in a very little time and again, the industry gained a lot of users and now after almost two years after the pandemic, more than 50m million people regularly plays fantasy cricket and other fantasy games and with the help of all these fantasy games user, the industry is now a billion dollar industry. The kind of attention it’s getting, in the next 30 years, don’t be surprised to see them as a trillion dollar industry!
