Traditionally the season of over indulgence, the after effects can linger well into the New Year. Weight gain, bloating, bowel disruption and abdominal discomfort can all result from over doing it but can also indicate an underlying problem.

No Party for Your Liver

Supporting your liver can pay dividends at this time of year. If you feel ropey after a night on the tiles or eating rich food, taking a herbal supplement to help your liver cope can really help (Liv & Gall Clear from detox). Drinking lots of water also helps your liver detox and keep you looking and feeling fresh.

Revitalize Your Digestion

Contrary to popular belief indigestion and heart burn are often caused by a shortage of digestive enzymes. Supplementing with Well Digested (from detox) can stop the misery before it starts even when eating a bit more than usual.

Give a Gift of Good Health

If tummy upsets have become normality and just get a bit worse at this time of year it’s worth having a Food Sensitivity Test. You might not want to restrict consumption of certain foods right now but having a test before Christmas means you are ready to get going in the New Year (and it’s often easier to feel motivated after really suffering). What a great Christmas present (gift vouchers available for any amount) for someone with IBS, struggling to lose weight or battling bloating – potentially a permanent solution – how much are they going to love you?

In the Aftermath

Give New Year’s good intentions a boost with a course of colonics. Again, it makes an unusual and very practical present especially for someone who suffers with their tummy. Lots of people talk about having colonics and don’t get round to it. Or you could just treat yourself. Have a fresh start in the New Year and get rid of the backlog built up during 2009. A great way to detox, kick start weight loss or to launch a healthy new lifestyle.

The Yorkshire Clinic in Cottingley recently held the grand opening of its brand new Physiotherapy Treatment Centre, Endoscopy Suite

and Angiography Suite (Cardiac), the most recently completed parts of its extensive £3.5 million development work. The new suite was officially opened with a ribbon cutting and plaque unveiling by Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, Councillor John D Godward and Mrs Jean Godward. The proceedings were also attended by Chris Brandon, Bradford City Football Player, and Jill Watts, CEO of Ramsay Healthcare UK. Donations were given by The

Yorkshire Clinic to The Lord Mayor’s Appeal and The Bradford City Foundation. The Outpatient Physiotherapy unit has now been moved back to the clinic from Cottingley Manor (Nuffield Gym), and Louise Bland (Inpatient Physio Manager) and Karen Nicolson (Outpatient Physio Manager) are now working together to run the new department. The next step in the development work is a new theatre that will be added to the back of the hospital, this will be Theatre Number 5, and means shorter waiting times for procedures as more cases will be able to be seen and operated on each week.

Work also begins in a couple of months on six new Premium Rooms in keeping with the new Premium Care Service. These rooms will be available to those insured or self paying patients, including services such as a consultant of their choice, flexible appointment times, more palatial rooms, fast track admission, a la carte menu, free newspapers, visit by senior member of management, etc.

For more information on the newly opened facilities and those soon to be opened, contact The Yorkshire Clinic on Tel: 01274 550600 or visit www.theyorkshireclinic.co.uk.

In today’s hectic world where most people work flat out and longer hours than ever before, trying to fit in cleaning, washing and ironing, shopping and generally running of a home and family leaves virtually no time to relax and unwind before the whole whirlwind starts again each Monday morning!

Well the answer to all of your laundry, dry cleaning and ironing needs is right on the doorstep in Shipley, at KLEAN4U The Laundry and KLEAN4U The Ironing Shop. If you travel at any time on Leeds Road, you will have noticed this fantastic new facility taking shape, and no doubt the huge banner sign letting you know that they are now open with some great offers, and they are open from 7am Monday to Friday and Saturday and Sunday from 9am. From a single item to a full family wash, you can drop your washing, dry cleaning or ironing off on your way to work and collect on your way home, and don’t forget to collect your 50% Privilege Discount Card! Not only does The Laundry give you back your precious time, they save you money too!

If you don’t pass by The Laundry on a daily basis and have large loads or bulky items such as duvets, rugs, curtains and bed linen to be cleaned, KLEAN4U offer a collection and delivery service too, so you don’t even have to go out of your way...even more time back to you! There’s a great 2-for-1 offer on duvets at the moment which I personally took advantage of. Having put this awful job off for a couple of years, I have just changed from Summer to Winter duvets and decided to take up the 2-for-1 offer. I was amazed at the service, I was advised that I could collect them in two days and pay on collection. When I did this, so beautifully presented were my duvets in quality storage bags - the duvets incidentally had doubled in size with the cleaning process - that I felt I had to make sure that they were mine and not a couple of top quality brand new duvets! If the washing and ironing is piling up or you have items for dry cleaning, we recommend you visit or call The Laundry. Time is the one gift we could never get back...until now. From your individual and family laundry needs to restaurants, gyms, hotels, beauticians and hairdressers etc.

Contract work always undertaken.

to find the perfect tenant the perfect home

Jon Huby from Calverley, gave up a full time career in September this year to pursue his business idea in residential lettings and management, along with his fiancée.

After many years in corporate sales and account management, dealing with large multinational companies Jon was faced with the threat of possible redundancy in autumn last year. He looked at many career and employment options, paying particular interest to the residential lettings and management areas of the property market. Through extensive due diligence within the industry Jon found there was a demand for an agent who could provide outstanding customer service, in what is a largely unregulated market. Jon wanted to stand head and shoulders above his competitors from the beginning, so contacted the Guild of Letting & Management (GLM) and The National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS), for advice and feedback on his research. This led him to complete the BTEC National Diploma in Letting and Management to acquire knowledge and understanding of the current regulations and requirements of the letting industry. Gaining NALS accreditation reflects the strict and correct processes and procedures his company adheres to when dealing with tenants and landlords. With everything in place, Jon decided on the name Lets Go Professional Ltd. It reflects how the company operates and who it deals with. The mission is “to find the perfect tenant the perfect home and provide a perfect service to all our customers”. “Our aim is to make the letting process simple and efficient for both tenants and landlords alike. Our

website reflects this and is a great source of information on our services and how we can help with the time consuming search for that perfect home. Whether you are a single person, a family or a large corporate organisation seeking rental accommodation for their employees Lets Go Professional can find a home to suit.” Jon Huby (Director) Upholding the company ethos, Jon likes to meet customers face to face to fully understand each person’s individual needs and wants. This enables him to explain how Lets Go Professional can help the customers, making the whole letting or rental process seamless and stress free. Need rental accommodation sourcing or managing? Look no further than Lets Go Professional Ltd; the perfect partner providing the perfect service.

Back in the Summer Salon Owner Paul Shakeshaft and Style Director Adele Mason of Yazz Number One Hair Studio, threw down a challenge to the pupils of Benton Park School to design a Retail

Bag which we at Yazz could use to promote our business, at the same time offering the students a chance to dazzle us with their artistic genius! Yazz Number One Hair Studio has been British Hairdressing Business Award finalists for the last two years and need a retail bag to reflect their artistic flair. The school, with the help of Mr Chatterton, rose to the challenge and we received some excellent artwork entries – the job of choosing a winning entry was no easy task but Simon Hudson, the Artwork Designer for GHD, selected an image which he felt best reflected the business. Details of the winning design, along with the winning artist will be featured in the next issue of Here and Now.

The New Inn at Calverley was featured in the October/November edition of Here & Now Magazine, and proprietors, Steve Armitage and Nick Marshall are thrilled at the response they have had from Here & Now readers! Both Nick and Steve,

and all of us here at the magazine would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who took the time to visit The New Inn and experience their great home cooked food and wonderfully unique style of hospitality. Steve and Nick feel they have many new customers who will no doubt become friends, as have their other customers. There will be a ‘new look’ to The New Inn in January, kick starting the New Year with new furniture and redecoration, even more reason to go along and check out dishes from the menu, such as the New Inn Steak and Ale Pie (still a secret recipe never to be shared!), or the many a la carte dishes on offer, and their Speciality Evenings such as the ‘Steak and Seafood Evening’ are so popular that unless you book early you will not be able to get a booking! Sunday lunch is a chance to try some more of Steve’s mouth watering home cooked food, with a choice of three traditional Sunday roasts and the usual extensive menu. The Garden Room Restaurant was introduced to The New Inn three years ago and has proven to be a great success, serving meals in the evenings from Thursday to Sunday, as well as the usual popular bar meals. We recently went along to try it out and were disappointed to find the restaurant fully booked, (word travels fast!), and so we ate from restaurant menu in the bar. Not only did this give us the opportunity to test out the food, which by the way was delicious, we also got to experience and observe the brilliant relationship and hospitality enjoyed by every customer visiting The New Inn. It is easy to see why this pub is bucking the trend and keeping busy; we will definitely be going back to eat there again and will remember to book for the restaurant next time! To dine in the restaurant or to attend one of the events planned at The New Inn, booking is advisable to avoid disappointment, although Nick and Steve always try to squeeze people in where possible, we are testament to that!

Something fabulous has happened in Farsley! Martha’s Home Interiors has opened at 64a Town Street and if you visit only one shop in Farsley, then

this has to be ‘the one’! What an absolutely wonderful place Martha’s Home Interiors is, from the outside this home and gift boutique merely hints at the delights you will find inside. A visit is essential to fully appreciate how special this shop is. With Christmas just around the corner, you may be struggling to buy gifts for family and friends, it certainly gets more difficult each year. With that in mind, your family and friends probably find buying gifts for you more and more difficult. So a visit to Martha’s Home Interiors is a must on many levels; you are sure to find the perfect gifts to buy and unique Christmas decorations, you will also leave with a list of the presents you would like to receive! And the great thing about purchasing items from Martha’s is that every item is stocked in limited numbers to help keep each purchase unique, and your shopping experience exciting with new stock each time you visit. To give you a flavour of Martha’s, there are two major home

fashion lines that are very popular yet hard to source locally. Sia items are contemporary in design with a high shine finish, usually in classy muted shades for those of us who like to decorate our homes with beautiful, elegant pieces. Whether just browsing or looking for a complete new look, Sia offer a style for most homes and tastes. The second major range in stock is PARLANE INTERNATIONAL, beautifully rustic in design, hand crafted from natural materials, items include glassware, wall art, candles, Christmas decorations, jewellery and furniture. Both Sia and PARLANE offer a range that is truly expansive yet you will be amazed at the prices...I was! That’s the really great things about Martha’s Home Interiors, the pricing is so affordable that you will rarely come away with just one item, you will love the fact that your budget will allow you to purchase numerous pieces or gifts and you will want to tell everyone about it and visit again and again. With so much to see from stunning items to grace any home or unique gifts to impress for Christmas, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, even baby showers and christenings, the only limitation is your imagination...certainly not the choice or prices!

Arthritis alert!Joint Anatomy

WINter is here, and just like us, our pets can suffer from arthritis. It is a common problem in pets and may initially go unnoticed as it is often gradual in onset. It is usually worse in the colder months, causing a variety of symptoms including pain, stiffness – particularly after rest, and reluctance to play.

the joints permitting free movements are called synovial joints. A healthy joint has a smooth layer of articular cartilage covering the ends of the bones and is lubricated by synovial fluid produced by the synovial membrane, allowing friction free movement.

Arthritic joints typically show a progressive breakdown and thinning of the articular cartilage. As the cartilage wears, so

pets suffer from pain and inflammation of the joint. On x-rays, new bone can often be seen around the affected joint.

there are several possible causes of arthritis: the commonest is a lifetime of activity, simply

resulting in wear and tear on the joints. Arthritis may also occur following joint trauma or as a consequence of joint malformation (e.g. hip dysplasia), resulting in an unstable joint and increased wear and tear on the cartilage.

Although arthritis cannot usually be cured, the good news is that we now have a great range of treatments to help your pet. For many pets that are carrying a few extra pounds, losing weight can make a huge difference. In addition to weight loss, many pets benefit from anti-inflamatory pain relief medication and food supplements containing glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate. If you are worried that your pet may have arthritis, please come and see us for a check-up!

Feline Leukaemia Virus – is your cat vaccinated?

DiD yOu know that Feline Leukaemia Virus infection is one of the commonest causes of premature death in cats? The virus is found in the saliva of infected cats and is mainly spread by direct contact of one cat with another – usually licking or biting.

Although the virus can cause true leukaemia, on many occasions the effects are more related to suppression of the cat’s immune system – leaving it fatally exposed to infections that a healthy cat would normally recover from. The disease is however unrelated to any human condition and quite specific to cats.

The good news is that there is a very effective vaccine, giving cats protection against this deadly disease. Please contact us for further information or an appointment.

Cabbage, broccoli and stilton soupLump of butter½ cabbage, shredded4 large potatoes, cut into 1 cm chunks1 onion, finely chopped2 cloves of garlic, crushed2 bay leavesA handful of parsley400g roughly chopped broccoli70g stilton (or other salty blue cheese) 500ml vegetable stock

Melt the butter in a deep saucepan. Add onions and sauté until just beginning to colour. Stir in the potatoes and garlic and turn the heat down. Once the potatoes are softened but not crumbling, add the cabbage and the stock and bring everything to a gentle simmer. Add the broccoli and bay leaves. Cover and simmer for half an hour. Season. Bring the pan off the heat and crumble in the stilton. If you like, you can blend the soup in a food processor, or serve it as it is. Serve with warm crusty bread.

Courgette and chilli pastaThis would also be good with shaved fennel.2 courgettes, shaved with a potato peeler into ribbons1 red chilli, deseeded and slices lengthways into long, thin strips.1 onion, roughly chopped½ lemon, juicedA couple of handfuls of fresh rocket or watercress. 50g freshly grated parmesanA few glugs of some good olive oil350g fettuccini pasta, cooked according to packet instructions.

Fry the onions very slowly in a tablespoon of cooking oil. Cooking them over a very low heat will bring out their sweetness - allow about 15 minutes. Add the chilli to the onions in the pan and turn up the heat slightly. After about 5 minutes, stir in the courgettes, lemon juice and rocket or watercress. Once the leaves have wilted, take the pan off the heat and toss the fettuccini in with the vegetables. Serve with a drizzle of olive oil and some parmesan sprinkled over.

Carrots roasted with cumin(Allow 1 large, or 2 small carrots per person)Preheat the oven to 200°C. Cut the carrots into generously sized batons, and toss into a baking tray with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Sprinkle over a teaspoon of cumin seeds and a small drizzle of runny honey. Bake them in the oven for about 15-20 minutes and serve with the lentils, bacon and broccoli.

Cabbage with Lentils and ChilliA comforting quick and easy supper200g lentils, cooked and dressed3 tablespoons olive oil1/2-1 chilli, finely chopped1 onion, chopped2 cloves garlic, crushed½ cabbage, shreddedJuice of ½ lemon1 tablespoon chopped coriander

Sweat the onion, garlic and chilli in the oil until softened. Add the cabbage, season well and cook over a high heat, stirring, until wilted. Add lemon juice, lentils and coriander and season.

Courgette and leek risottoSimple and satisfying to cook, this basic method is infinitely adaptable – just think about different cooking times when deciding when to add the vegetables. Frozen peas or broad beans (blanched and shelled, if you can be bothered) are a good standby, and later in the year roasted squash and sage makes a great combination. You can also add cooked bacon or leftover cooked chicken or stir in some spinach a couple of minutes before the rice is cooked.

400g risotto rice 1 large onion, finely chopped2 garlic cloves, finely chopped500ml vegor chicken stock (you may need a bit more), kept hot50g butter2 courgettes, sliced into ½ cm discs3 leeks, slices into ½ cm discs1 glass of white wine 50g parmesan cheeseA squeeze of lemon juice

Melt the butter over a medium heat in a large saucepan and add the chopped onions. Fry them until they soften (about 5 minutes), then stir in the risotto rice. Toast the rice in the pan with the onions until the edges of the grains are translucent (about 3 minutes), then pour in the white wine and stir until all the liquid has been absorbed. Gradually add the hot stock, one ladleful at a time, stirring it until it has been absorbed by the rice, then adding a bit more. After about 10 minutes of cooking the rice, add the garlic and the leeks and courgettes along with a squeeze of lemon juice. After about 20 minutes cooking time, the risotto should be ready – the grains should still have some bite. Turn off the heat and stir the parmesan and a bit of fresh parsley if you have some. Cover, and leave it to rest for 5 minutes before serving it with a green salad.

As the festive season approaches there are some simple measures you can take to help prevent you coming a victim of crime.

If going out make sure all your doors and windows are shut and locked. Leave lights on in the house, timer switches are a good idea. Don’t display Christmas presents in open view from outside. When shopping make sure you keep handbags shut and don’t leave them on the trolley unattended. There is usually an increase of bags stolen therefore my staff will be spending more time patrolling the local stores as we want to prevent crime. I am aware of the following postal scam where a card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate number). DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize. If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call. If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 02072396655

I have been working closely with SNOOP who are an organisation working with children and adults with learning disabilities. The Help I’m Lost card scheme has been launched in the area. If you work in a local business or shop and are interested in participating in

the scheme by placing a sign in the window then please contact Carol Beardmore or Carol Amery on 01274 621066 or e-mail [email protected]. This is a very worthwhile scheme and I would urge local businesses to become involved.

A modern cafe in Baildon, run by local girl, Sharon Frost, provides the ideal place to call in for a coffee and cake with friends or for a lovely home-made lunch.

Nine@ Westgate serves a varied menu of breakfasts, lunches and take-away sandwiches, cakes and pastries, all of which are home-made, and if you fancy a glass of wine with your lunch, Nine also holds a full alcohol licence. Plus, there’s an exquisite range of Fair Trade specialist coffees to round off your superb dining experience. Sharon trained as a chef at the White House Restaurant on Baildon Moor and then for a time, became its head chef. She has now realised her dream of running her own eatery and explains: “I have always wanted to run my own catering business and enjoy dividing my time between the kitchen and working out front in the cafe.” Baildon is a lovely, picturesque village with some fabulous shops and places to visit so

makes a great place to spend a day on your own, with friends or family, and Nine@ Westgate is the perfect place to stop off for some good, wholesome, hearty home cooking. In fact the cakes and pastries are so scrumptious that you will probably want to take some home too! Situated in the old mill house on Westgate, which was originally built as the mill owner’s house, it has previously been a girls school, a post office and, more recently, a bakery and tea rooms - probably remembered by people of Baildon as Feathers, run by the Jowett family for over 50 years. Despite its many re-incarnations and inevitable building alterations, Nine@ Westgate manages to combine its original external character with a modern day thriving business, and although you may no longer be able to buy

your stamps or learn your times tables there, you can always be sure of a friendly face, a welcoming atmosphere and superb food. Sharon makes sure of that! Nine is also now open every Thursday and Friday evening, when Sharon turns the cafe into a fabulous Bistro with a menu to challenge many other local restaurants. And if that wasn’t enough to fill Sharon’s time, she also provides a thriving outside catering business!

Bookings are now being taken for Christmas lunches and evenings. A visit to Nine@ Westgate is highly recommended, it’s the place to meet and eat in Baildon!

Just a reminder of some of the pleasant days we’ve had, whilst we are experiencing this awful cold, wet and wintry weather. One of our favourite

pastimes is walking and occasionally we do this with comrades from our pensioners’ group. On this particular occasion, it turned out to be yet another beautiful sunny day with clear blue skies for Jeff to lead the walk, this time starting from Pateley Bridge. We started with a steady climb uphill, with a spectacular panorama over the village behind us as we progressed, and then the views of Nidderdale began to open up. We were surprised to find a llama grazing in a field as we passed. As we walked along the traffic free lane of Ladies’ Rigg, one of our group who had an interest in biology, gave us a running commentary on the colourful wild flowers in the hedgerows alongside our path. Then we had a lovely downhill stretch into a valley, passing a farmstead with a multitude of various categories of geese, free range hens and sheep (Old MacDonald’s Farm sprang to mind). When we reached Low Hole Bottom, Jeff informed us that the private house we came

A Junior Pensioner Nidderdale Way Walk

across was once Pateley Bridge YHA and centuries earlier it had been cottages for the lead miners. We continued along broad tracks to eventually drop down to the old Merryfield mine workings, where there are still pieces of metal wreckage in places. We descended the steep hillside amongst the spoil heaps, to the remains of the Prosperous lead smelting mill next to the stream, which ceased operating in 1872. This was our spot for lunch, where we sat surrounded by the ruined walls, to tuck in. After that we crossed the bridge and followed the path through the woods up to a broad vehicle track. The return leg was a welcome downhill stride, where pheasants could be seen darting across the path to hide in the bracken and ferns, and rabbits were cleverly hiding in places

in the fields, unnoticed until they moved about. The track led through a number of caravan sites, some with colourful displays of potted plants in the doorways, all basking in the sunlight. We diverted from our path to see the 35ft diameter waterwheel which remains as evidence of the former hemp mill, which is now converted into apartments. Further on, we decided to leave our track again to take a tea break alongside the river. This was a good choice as we were rewarded by seeing a kingfisher flash by us as it flew the full length of the river downstream. The remainder of our walk was a pleasant riverside path back to Pateley Bridge. Most of us decided to treat ourselves by calling into a café in the main street, to enjoy home made scones and pots of tea. Happy days!

Who needs a will?

Married couples: Without a will, it is not certain that your spouse will directly inherit your assets, unless they are jointly owned. Do not assume that your assets are jointly owned, this is not always the case.

Unmarried couples: Without a will your partner may not receive anything! Your entire estate will probably be divided between your children; if you don’t have any children then your assets will be shared between your relatives.

Divorced or separated: Without a will your ‘ex-spouse’ could be entitled to claim a part of your assets.

Parents of young children: By making a will you can ensure that the courts are aware of who you wish to care for your children in the event of your death.

We design your ‘will’ around your own personal and financial circumstances in the privacy of your own home and at a fraction of ‘high street prices’. For an information pack on the services we offer or to arrange a free no obligation consultation to discuss your needs and how we may be able to help you please contact Ian Thornton on 01274 620702 or 07712 137021.

How can we help?

Making your wishes known after your death.

Not making a will can cause all sorts of problems for those you leave behind. Many people think that everything automatically passes to certain people upon death. But this is not always the case. We will help you make your wishes clear so there can be no error; leaving you happy in the knowledge that you

1. Choose who draws up your will wiselyYou can make your own will using a DIY kit available from the local stationers but the process is full of pitfalls and errors are easy to make. Solicitors make a lot more money sorting out badly drafted wills and dealing with claims against those wills, than they make for drawing up wills. DIY is OK for home improvements, but, unless you’re extremely confident and knowledgeable, it’s not for wills.

2. Choose your executors wellExecutors are responsible for exercising your estate in accordance with your instructions after you have died. It is a responsible and demanding role, and involves handling large sums of money. And don’t forget to check that the people you choose are happy to take on the role.

3. Appoint a default or substitute executorIf you are married, you will probably want your spouse to be your executor, but don’t appoint them as your sole executor. If you both died together in a plane crash or a car accident, neither of you would have an executor living. Always appoint a default or substitute executor as a fall-back position in case your spouse is unwilling or unable to act.

4. Appoint guardiansIf you are the last living parent and you die leaving children under the age of 18, a guardian will be appointed by the court if you have not specified who this should be in your will. If you are unmarried but you and your partner have children, you might not even get guardianship of your children. If an unmarried man dies, his female partner automatically gets guardianship of their children, but if an unmarried women dies, her male partner does not. You should appoint each other as guardians in your wills to overcome this problem.

5. Appoint trustworthy trusteesThis might sound obvious, but if you are setting up a trust in your will or if your beneficiaries could be aged under 18 when you die, you will need to appoint trustees. Trustees will be responsible for managing and investing money or looking after property until it passes to the beneficiaries, so make sure they are people with a good grasp of financial matters – and that they are still young enough so they don’t die before you do.

6. Make specific legaciesIf you want to preserve family heirlooms or items of sentimental value, (for example, a grandfather clock, or a wedding ring), you should leave these items as a specific legacy to a named beneficiary.

Paying for Long Term Care.

One in four women and one in six men may require long-term care. The reality is that homes have been sold in order to pay fees. Not only will we make your position crystal clear but there are also ways in which we can show you how to better protect your assets from this possibility.

Inheritance Tax Planning.

You would be amazed how much money is paid out to the taxman because people don’t always plan properly. Not only can this be upsetting for relatives but also all too often the bulk of the tax could be lowered. We are experts at helping you reduce this risk.

Making plans in case you become mentally incapable.

Have you considered who you would like to look after your affairs if you became unable to do so? By arranging a Lasting Power of Attorney, decisions regarding pensions, investments, and property would be made by a person of your choice and can help prevent squabbling under such difficult circumstances. Not planning for this possibility can mean sometimes it’s too late. If you fail to elect anyone then your affairs will be arranged by the Court of Protection- Public Guardianship Office, their role in your affairs may be costly, intrusive and frustrating.

Leeds United head towards the festive period with a tight grip on the League One promotion race. After 17 games, Simon Grayson’s

side were six points clear at the top of the division and were a whopping nine points clear in the promotion places. The 1-0 defeat of Leyton Orient at Elland Road at the end of November saw the unbeaten home record stretch to 20 matches and as the New Year beckons, Grayson’s men are established as the firm favourites to book a Championship return. But the manager is determined to keep his feet and the feet of his players firmly on the ground. “We’ve had a great start to the season and we’re in a great position,” he said. “There’s a lot of other clubs who would love to be in the position we’re in – but there’s still a long way to go. Promotions aren’t won in November and December, they are won in May and it’s where we are then that counts. “What we’ve done is given

Max is Mad for it at Leeds

Leeds United loan man Max Gradel was delighted to secure his short-term future with the club, following an extension to his loan move.

The 22-year-old, who joined from Leicester City for an initial month, had his stay extended until January 2 after impressing both the manager and the Elland Road fans. Gradel struck the winning goal against Orient in November and walked away from Elland Road with his second Man of the Match award of the month. “I’m very happy to be back here,” said Max. “Leeds asked Leicester, and Leicester didn’t say no, so I’m really happy. Leicester thought it was best for me, and best for me to keep playing first team football. “I haven’t spoken with the Leicester manager, but I hope to speak to him in January to see what options are available to me. I don’t know what will happen, but I want to play first team football and we’ll talk about it in January, and see what the best thing is. “It’s Leicester’s decision and we’ll see, but I need to do what’s best for me at the moment.” The player has settled in quickly with United. “The manager, the staff, and the players have helped me settle down quickly and I’m enjoying it here,” he added. “I need to get more confidence and get my fitness levels high, and I’m looking to keep on going now. “We have a lot of games coming up that we have to be ready for, and I’m looking forward to things.”

ourselves a platform with the start we’ve had. We’ve shown a good level of consistency and we keep raising the standards higher and higher. I thought we were terrific when we won 4-0 at Bristol Rovers, but then we went to Brighton and turned in what I felt was our best performance of the season. “It’s all about keeping it going. We have the players here who have a real belief in what they are doing. There’s no complacency among them and if they see other players slacking they tell them. That’s how it should be.”

We at Bradford City are rapidly approaching the unfortunate 25th anniversary of that tragic day at Valley Parade on the 11th May

1985 when fire swept through the main stand in less than four minutes and claimed the lives of 56 people, and injuring hundreds more. As a result of this, a special unit was set up by Professor David Sharp to look into the treatment of burn and other plastic surgery treatment methods. This unit is known as the Bradford Burns Unit, based at the University of Bradford. However it is facing closure and we at BCFC, in conjunction with the T&A, are trying to raise a massive £100,000 to keep the unit open. A committee has been set up and all manner of events have started to take place - already the fund stands at over £15,000 and of course all different sponsored events are taking place. Our joint chairman, Mark Lawn, is of course embarking on a sponsored slim and vows that if he doesn’t lose weight he’ll donate a sizable sum of money to the unit, so if you see Mark out and about (you can’t miss him) slip him a big bag of chips. Shipley Bantams have teamed up with Saltaire Brewery who launched a beer on the 27th November which will attract a donation for every pint drunk. An evening at the brewery saw ex City legend John Hendrie pull the first pint, so if you’re in as pub and see a beer called

BANTAM BLONDE have a few beers and help a great cause. Road signs are our next venture. A sign with the BCFC crest and the name of the stadium and street, would look great on a child’s bedroom wall. They will retail at around £10 but, for an extra £5, you can have them signed by Stuart McCall, these signs are being manufactured at the moment, so look out for them around Valley Parade in the next month. Two of our members Martin and Steven Stewart who live in Keighley - walk to every home game and this season it is hoped that on the last home game hundreds more will walk with them collecting donations on the way. We are to host a fund raising night at The Shipley Club on Saturday 16th January - let’s hope the Bantam Blonde goes down well that night, being teetotal I love nights like that as I’m the only one able to remember what happened. Lots of other fund raising ideas are being processed and I’m sure you’ll all hear about them in due course, so if you have any ideas and would like to help out please give us a shout. All those on the Internet can visit the Shipley Bantams Website and log on to our memorial page where all the details can be found - www.theshippers.co.uk Going on from the 25th anniversary, it is forgotten that the game played that day was to celebrate our promotion from the old 3rd division and our manager at the moment played that day.

“Sometimes in life football takes a back seat...”

So what a fitting tribute it would be if, on the anniversary of 11th May, we could look back on the season in the knowledge we had obtained promotion - which would be a great tribute to those fans who sadly perished that day. So onto this season and the task we face. Well it’s not quite like the 1984/85, season which saw a bunch of youngsters with the odd experienced player taking us to the top of the league with a 3-1 victory against Millwall at VP on a cold November night, but this squad of youngsters seem to be progressing well. It really is a joy to watch them play, even in defeat we applaud them off the field - like the home game against Crewe in October when the whole ground joined in the acknowledgement to the players. Long may our style of football continue and let’s hope the youngsters keep progressing at the rate theyhave been.Earlier in the season it was great to catch up with a wonderful man - Bill Walsh, an Internet friend from New Zealand who left England for the other side of the world back in the early 50s. He’s still City through and through and it was a complete pleasure to listen to his tales of supporting City as a youngster. Bill joined the Bantams Beak team on BCB radio 106.6 fm to give us an insight into what it’s like supporting a team from afar. You too can listen to the ramblings of the Shipley crew on match days at around 1.30pm having a reet good moan!

The big news coming out of the Grattan Stadium was the decision of Club Captain Paul Deacon to leave the club and join his home town team Wigan.

He has signed a three year contract at the DW Stadium and will be player coach this season before stepping into the full time role as a coach. Paul has been an absolute legend for the club and during his eleven seasons at the Bulls – since 2007 as Club Captain - the Great Britain international has amassed a Club record of 2,605 points in a total in 326 appearances including 46 as substitute – 75 tries, 1,140 goals and 25 drop-goals. Paul hails from Standish in Wigan and played his junior Rugby with the Hindley amateur club. He played for Wigan Schools and Lancashire Schools and was a member of the

England Schoolboys team captained by former Wigan and Bradford hooker Terry Newton. He made his senior professional debut for Oldham Bears four days before his 18th birthday, joining the Bulls at the start of the 1998 season. Paul didn’t have long to wait long for his chance in Super League, scoring a try and a goal on his debut at scrum half in the Bulls’ 36-10 Super League home defeat of Huddersfield Giants in June of that year. By the time another former Wigan ‘great’, Henry Paul, left Bradford to switch codes with Gloucester, Paul Deacon was already established as the Bulls’ first-choice scrum half. His career has gone from strength to strength at the Grattan Stadium and in 2006 he broke the Club points and goals records previously held by the legendary Keith Mumby. He played in all

five of the Bulls consecutive Grand Finals, picking up the Harry Sunderland

Trophy as Man of the Match in 2002. In 2007 Paul was appointed Club Captain and in August of that year he was named at Scrum Half in Bradford’s Team of the Century. 2008 saw Paul celebrate his Testimonial season after 10 years’ outstanding service for the Bulls. Paul Deacon made his Great Britain Debut in 2001, in all making 11 appearances. He has also represented England and Lancashire. In November 2005 he suffered a life-threatening injury whilst playing against New Zealand but recovered in time for the start the 2006 season. He was recalled for the Great Britain Train-on Squad for the 2007 Test series but pulled out due to injury, subsequently ruling himself out of contention for the England World Cup squad due to a knee injury sustained in the play-offs against Wigan. Bulls Chairman Peter Hood was full of praise for the scrum half: “Paul Deacon has been a wonderful servant to Bradford Bulls and he embarks on the next stage of his rugby career with our very best wishes. I doubt that his record points tally will ever be surpassed and, whilst he would doubtless have gone on to add to that number had he continued to play for us, all good things must one day come to an end. Paul has decided that now is the right time to bring down the curtain on his illustrious Bulls career. The Club fully respects Paul’s decision and has agreed to his request that he be released from the remainder of his contract.” Paul Deacon said of his decision: “I would like to thank the Bradford Club, their fans, players, coaching staff, management and Board for 11 truly memorable years. It has been an honour to play and Captain the Team but I hope they can understand the great opportunity I now have to progress my career beyond my playing days. To work alongside Michael and Shaun Wane really excites me and I can’t wait to get started. The icing on the cake for me will not be having to make that daily journey over the M62!! “I have always harboured a desire to play for my home-town team and I hope to help Wigan win some silverware before I hang up the boots. Bulls Coach Steve McNamara understands Deacon’s reason for leaving: “Paul has been outstanding over a large period of time and has been particularly strong over the past 12 months when it’s been difficult at times. He’s been good for the club and good for me as a coach. It’s sad to see him go but it would be a shame for him to miss out on a tremendous opportunity like this.
