Hulp teen geweld uitgestelNICOLE MCCAIN

’n Program van die Stad Kaapstad gemikdaarop om gesinsgeweld in TemperanceTown te verhoed, is eers van die baan.

Vandie inwoners sêhulle is gladnie verbaasnie en sien dit as net nog ’n voorbeeld van hoedie Stad hulle in die steek gelaat het.Die programwat op 22Oktobermoes afskop,

is volgens Richard Bosman, die Stad se uitvoe-rende hoof van veiligheid en sekuriteit, onbe-paald uitgestel. Die Stad kon nie redes verskafwaarom dit uitgestel is nie en wanneer dit ge-implementeer sal word nie. Slegs die volgendeverklaring isuitgereik: “DieStadKaapstadhet

hierdie program eers opgeskort om seker temaak al die nodige prosesse en prosedures isin plek.”Carol Misrole, voorsitter van die Temperan-

ce Town-burgervereniging, sê die skuif ver-baas haar glad nie. “Die Stad belowe en belowenet. Hulle bestee geld op die verkeerde dinge.Hulle gee mense hoop en doen dan niks nie.”Volgens Misrole is huishoudelike geweld ’n

ernstige probleem in dié gemeenskap.Gordonsbaai sepolisiewoordvoerder, ao.Ni-

co Beukes, sê dié kantoor het reeds 30 klagtesvan gesinsgeweld sedert die begin van die jaarontvang. Hy voeg egter by dat dit moontlik isdatbaiemeergevallenieeersaangemeld isnie.Misrole noem ’n geval van ’n vrou wat haar

genader het omdat haar man glo die hele toe-laag wat hulle vir hul twee kinders ontvang,uitgedrink het en toe op kos – waarvoor daarnie geld was nie – aangedring het. Haar manhet haar glo met die dood gedreig en met ’nskroewedraaier in die skouer gesteek.In nog ’n geval onthou Misrole hoe sy verby

’n sjebien gestap het en gesien het hoe ’n man’n vrou se kop teen die muur kap. “Sy is soos’n stukkie papier teen die muur gegooi.”Beukes sê iets moet gedoen word om dié ge-

weld vas te vat, en glo gesinsgeweld kan ver-bind word aan ander kwessies soos alkohol-misbruik en werkloosheid.Misrole sê die groot aantal sjebiens en smok-

kelhuise in die gebied dra by tot dié geweld.

Syskatdatdaar tussendiesowat150huisemin-stens vyf sjebiens en sewe dwelmhuise is.Misrole sê een van die probleme wat lei tot

oormatige dwelm- en drankmisbruik, is die ge-brek aan fasiliteite in Temperance Town.Daaris behalwe ’n kinderspeelpark, geen ontspan-nings- of beradingsgeriewe nie. Sover haarkennis strek, is daar net twee kerke in die ge-bied en geen nie-regerings- of welsynsorgani-sasies wat die gemeenskap ondersteun nie.Nog voor die program veronderstel was om

geïmplementeer teword,wasMisrole reedsbe-kommerd dat dit net ’n korttermynoplossingsonder enige langtermynverandering souwees. “Onsmoetmensehêwathulleheelhartigaan die program wy,” meen Misrole.

It’s not often Gazette publishes an articleunder a heavy veil of secrecy.

Butwhen25-year-oldSilviniaCameroncameforward, asking to publicly thank the familywho took her in, one could hardly say no.Silvinia has been living with the Goosens

since the beginning of the year, while shetrains to be a hip hop dance teacher. She saystheyopened theirhome toher, andhaveneverasked for anything in return – not even rent.Linda (47) and Willem (48) Goosen moved

toSomersetWest fromGauteng twoyearsago.Despite having three daughters, they opentheir home to family friends who need help.“It’s part of their hearts,” says 23-year-old

Chanelle Goosen of her parents. “They takepeople in and look after them.”ChanelleandSilviniasaytheGoosensare far

toohumble tobe interested inhavinganarticlewritten about them, which is why the two se-cretlyarrangedawaytosaythankyoupublicly.Silvinia adds, “They try and fill a need

where and when there is one. That’s the kindof people they are – always willing to serveand lend a hand where possible.“They took me in. I was a stranger to them.

We’dneverspoken–Ihadjustbefriendedtheirdaughter, and they were so inviting and wel-

coming itwas unreal. They trustedme, a totalstranger, with their home and family.”The family even bought her a small scooter

to help her get around.And she’s not the only recipient of theGoos-

ens’ kindness. They often help out Chanelle’sfriends, be it by providing accommodation orhelping with transport.Chanelle says one of her friends was inter-

ested in buyingher father’s car. “ButGod laidit on his heart, and he decided to give it tothem instead.” In another case, her parentsrepaired a friend’s scooter, after her dadpushed it 20 km in the blazing sun. “And theydidn’t ask for anything in return.”This is oneof theirmostnoteworthycharac-

teristics,saysSilvinia–theGoosensgivewith-out condition. “There are no strings attached.Often people put conditions on generosity.”Chanelle says the culture of giving has al-

ways been in their home. “It’s nice to knowthey care. It’s how I grew up. For me, it’s nota huge thing.”But for the people they help, the kind deeds

areenormous.“They’vefedthehungry,clothedthe naked, and housed the homeless,” Silviniasays.“Theyareanexampletoallpeopletogenu-inely care and show affection and not just sayit. Broadlands Park-inwoners het op Sater-dag 20 Oktober saamgespan om ’n huis afte breekwat volgens hulle ’n sekuriteitsri-siko vir die gemeenskap ingehou het.

Volgens Denzel Vercuil, assistent-koördi-neerder vir die Strand-buurtwagte is die huisin Petuniastraat deur die gemeenskap en diebuurtwag afgebreek.Hysêdieeienaarvandieerfhetdieplaaslike

buurtwag genader en gevra dat die huis ge-sloop word omdat misdadigers ’n winkel daaropgesit het. “Die eienaar van die huis het be-sluit genoeg is genoeg,” sê Vercuil.FrancisLukas, sekretaris vandieStrandge-

meenskapspolisiëringsforum,hetbevestigdiegemeenskap en die buurtwag het die huis ge-

sloop en dat kriminele aktiwiteite daar plaas-gevind het.“Die huis het baie probleme geskep en die

polisie was gedurig daar. Daar is met onwetti-ge vuurwapens en dwelms handel gedryf.”Lukas en Vercuil vertel albei van ’n geveg

wat ’n paar weke gelede in die huis plaasge-vind het, waarna ’n 53-jarige man gesterf het.Volgens polisiewoordvoerder konst. MbuleloMafuna, het die geveg, wat na bewering ooreienaarskap van die huis gegaan het, vroeg op2 Oktober uitgebreek. ResidentsofRusthof inStrandhaveanastysmell under their noses – and they’re nowlooking to the public protector to make itgo away.

The smell comes from the Soetrivier canal,where sewage is leaking into the water. BrettHeron, the City of Cape Town’s mayoral com-mitteemember for roads, transport and storm-water, said recently that prolonged overflowof sewage and byproducts of vinegarmanufac-ture were at the root of the problem.TheCity startedcleaning thecanal on17Sep-

tember, but residents say the stench has stillnot gone away, and have now approached thepublic protector to take the City to task.Morkel Cottage resident Jan Vass, says the

problemsstarted in2006.Hesays thecommuni-ty has approached local government severaltimessincethen,askingthatthecanalbeeitherlined with concrete, or that pipes be laid downto carry the water. However, he says the Cityhas not heeded their request, and this is whyhe took the case to the public protector on 17October. Vass, who received a receipt from thepublic protector, says he expects members ofthe protector’s department to visit the sitewithin the next week or two. “If they [the City]had just answered us, I wouldn’t have had togo to the public protector.”At the time of print, the City had not com-

mented on the community’s decision to ap-proach the public protector.Vassadded:“Theydidn’twant to listen.They

spentR9,8milliononthecanal initially.Nowhowmuch are they spending to clean the canal everyyear? They want us to live with this forever, andI say, no, we’re not going to accept it.”According Stuart Pringle, councillor for Ward

The City’sfire safety inspectors and law enforcementofficials, together with the Explosives Unitof the police, will conduct inspections atfireworks display sites to ensure that allsafety requirements are met.The City’s law enforcement department

will also be on duty in residential areas, andLayne says this year law enforcement au-thorities will have a zero-tolerance ap-proach to those who discharge fireworks il-legally.TheCity ofCapeTown’sLawEnforcement

Department will be on duty and will actswiftly on complaints received.However, residents in the Macassar

Beach area have requested that revellers beconsiderate.

Qohnietah Salasa says that the fireworksare a nuisance.“They carry on the whole day. And you

should see how it looks.”Salasa says there is refuse left the next

day, and alcohol bottles are often left in thestreet because alcohol is not allowed on thebeach.And having the fireworks so close to their

home also upsets her animals. “We have ahorse,whichwehad to tranquilise last year.It also upsets the dogs.”Layne urges residents to keep their pets

safely indoors where possible.“Animals are easily frightened by fire-

works and can become distressed or try toescape from their properties. Before youleave your home on Guy Fawkes, please en-sure that your pets are safely secured onyour property, in familiar surroundingsand out of harm’s way.”Salasa says her neighbours also experi-

ence similar problems.“We hope it will be more controlled this

year. I have nothing against people havingfun.”

Wyk 84 se raadslid, Stuart Pringle,sê hy het klagtes van verskeie inwo-ners, besighede en kerke ontvang oordie huidige ligging. Pringle sê besig-hede in die gebied voel kriminele ele-mente skuil tussen diegene wat diesentrum gebruik, en dwelmverwantemisdaad indie gebied rondomdie sen-trum is kommerwekkend.

In pink to fight breast cancerStrand women stood togetheragainst breast cancer on Wednesdaylast week, in celebration of GlobalPink Hijab Day.

The international day, which aimsto raise awareness around breastcancer and fight Islamophobia, was

commemorated locally at the IqraLearning Centre in Strand.

Some150people,manyofwhomarebreastcancersurvivors,attendedthefunction. Many went for the freebreast exams, which were given toover 70 women on the day.

Young Lwandle soccer players have re-ceived an unusual gift – sent all the wayfrom England.

After reading aGazette article about a Lwan-dle soccer tournament, Barry Wolford fromLeicester in the English midlands presentedthe Helderberg Local Football Association(LFA) with 10 soccer jerseys from professionalfootball club Leicester City.

Wolford was entrusted with the jerseys be-longing to his late friend Graham Robson, whodied in September. Robson, who was an ardentfanof thefootballclub,hadcollectedthereplicashirts over the years. “He was well respectedat the club,” says Wolford. “And he would bevery pleased at the moment, because they’recurrently at the top of the log.”

The shirts, as Wolford explains, take one ona short history of the club, documenting thejourney through all its different sponsors,ranging from chip companies to banks. Rob-son’s partner, Pat Hale, asked that the shirtsbe passed on to young players.

Sandile Bavuma, spokesperson for the Hel-derberg LFA, says the jerseys will be givenaway as awards at a ceremony in November.

Specifically, he says, the jerseys will go tojunior teams in Lwandle, whose players rangein age group from u.11 to u.17. Barry Wolford hands Sandile Bavuma, Helderberg LFA spokesperson, one of the Leicester City soccer jerseys.
