Commutershave theirsay on rankDELIAH BRINKHUIS

Taxi drivers have not started oper-ating from the newly built taxi rankthat was completed in August thisyear.

An official opening of the rankthat was planned for 18 Septemberdid not take place, but according tochairman of the Somerset West andDistrict Taxi Association, WalterWilliams, the taxis will not makeuse of the rank until their require-ments are met.

Williams says they werenot consulted in the initialplanning of the rank and isunhappy about the currentstructure. A major concernfor the association is that theinterim rank that was builtat a cost of R1,1 million willperhaps have to move fromits current premises on thecorner of Zandvliet and Mu-sica Avenues when con-struction of a permanentrank starts in three years.Other concerns are that thenewly built rank was builtwithout a roof for the taxisto park under, can only ac-commodate 15 of the 75 taxisat a time, and also the lackof toilet facilities and waterfor commuters and drivers. The Helderberg Gazetteasked the community of Ma-cassar how they feel abouttheir newly built taxi rank.

Dennis Khana says the engineers and of-ficials should have planned the rank inconjunction with the taxi association andcommunity in order to ascertain if it issuitable for the use of the commutersand taxi drivers. He says a roof is neces-sary as this will protect them from rainand heat.

Bridgitte Viviers says the new rank shouldhave toilet facilities and a tuckshop.

“If there is no roof for the taxis to park undercommuters will have to stand in the rain. The newly installed bus shelters will not giveenough protection against the rain. Theplanners have to think of the commutersas well,” says Beatrice Swarts.

Marcus Kroneberg says the interim rankis a waste of money. “A public meetingshould have been held to involve thecommunity and the taxi drivers. The rankshould have a roof as other ranks in CapeTown, he says. He also feels that it shouldhave a washbay so commuters can betransported in clean vehicles.

“Clean toilet facilities are definitely neededfor the commuters who sometimes haveto wait long before the taxi is full and cantransport commuters to Somerset West. Arankwithout a roof will also be uncomforta-ble for commuters who will have to sit inthe warm taxis.

Pauline Daniels says the current rank isat the most suitable place. “It is a wasteto spend the money on an interim rankonly to have it demolished andmoved else-where. There are many institutions and or-ganisations in Macassar that are in needof funds.

“Instead of improving our rank it wasmade smaller and left without a roof; allother ranks in the rest of Cape Town haveroofs. Why was a permanent rank notbuilt now tomake it better for commuters, instead of wasting R1,1 million on aninterim rank?” asks John Middleway.

Learning about organic gardensSomerset West resident VanitaDrew is passing on her love forgardening to disadvantaged com-munities.

Drewruns the Soil for Life organicgardening courses which also pro-motes recycling. She primarily offers these courses

in disadvantaged communitieswhere she incorporates the use of re-cycled material. She utilises house-hold waste items such as vegetablepeels for compost andanything fromold tyres or plastic baths are used ascontainers for the plants.Drew she gained knowledge and

experience when working part-timefor Waste Wise, environmental edu-cators and a recycling company.Through the company she also

completed an organic gardeningcourse.Drew decided to share her knowl-

10 people at a time at their homes.Recently she also offered courses

at the Boys’ and Girls’ Towns in Ma-cassar and the Silver Oaks retire-ment home in Somerset West. These courses are for beginners.“It is very comprehensive because

it teaches people that gardening forfood is achievable at a low cost andalso beneficial to the environment,”says Drew. She sponsors her students with a

gardening starter pack which con-
