Friday 8 April 2010 Issue Three Hundred and Seventy-Three Happenings Hargest 12 Outdoor Rec Kayak Camp Equestrian News Kim McCabe and her horse Charlton Officer Kim McCabe Year 12 student, Kim McCabe has been selected for the Otago/ Southland Team to compete at the New Zealand Pony Club Eventing Championships in Taranaki over the holidays. Kim is the first Hargest student in many years to achieve selection into this team. Otago/Southland Secondary Schools Equestrian Teams Showcross Event Two JHC Teams competed at this event. The Red team was placed second overall and consisted of : Kim McCabe Clare Bramley Kelly Russell Annie Russell Katie Weir The Gold Team was placed fourth and consisted of: Kelly McDonald Lee Warren Aimee McCallum Lana Medder Maeghan McCallum Tessa Schmidt Nicole White Nicole recently competed at the Horse of the Year Show in Hastings. She was one of four riders to be selected for the Otago/ Southland team competing on her pony Benson Dun It. Nicole came second in the 6 Bar Pony of the Year, 2nd in a 1.05m pony class which had 122 entries and narrowly missed out on the 1.10m Pony of the Year Championship class. On her other pony Cuban Connisseur, Nicole took out 1st place overall in the Pony 1.20m class and 4th place overall in the Speed Pony of the Year 1.20m class. This year she has also competed for the South Island at the North Island Showjumping Champs. Her team was placed 3rd overall out of 33 teams. Interschool Competition Congratulations to the James Hargest College equestrian team consisting of Kelly McDonald, Aimee McCallum and Meaghan McCallum, who won the AMP trophy for the Interschool competition at the Invercargill A & P Show recently. Their smart uniform, polite nature, enthusiasm and committed performance was very admirable. Please pass on congratulations to the students and the teacher(s)/parent(s) who managed them.” The James Hargest College team of Rachael Wilson, Lydia Smith, Bailey Lovett and Leah Dixon came third in the schools’ section of the Challenge. Netball Congratulations to Morgan Hunter (right) who has been selected as the youngest member of the Otago/Southland Netball Team in the Lois Muir Competition. Just one step below the Southern Steel! Cycling Southland Secondary Schools’ Track Cycling Championships Congratulations to the Hargest Cycle team who had a combined total of 45 points during this meet, 11 points clear of their nearest rival. Sean Fox (pictured top) was unbeaten for the day winning the 500m time trial and the scratch races over 500m and 1250m. For his efforts he claimed the individual honour of Best Boys’ Under 19 rider. Brandon Waerehu and Andre Zwies represented the school at the Regional finals in Dunedin on March 8. From the group of fifty contestants Akib, Pierre and Hamish made the final round and Akib was placed second.

Akib’s prize was a trip to Wellington along with a parent, to represent the Otago/Southland region in the National finals on March 20. There he was placed sixth overall. The school is enormously proud of his efforts. Over the last three years Hargest has had two pupils in the National finals plus an ex Junior Campus pupil won the competition last year.

All the students win a Collins electronic spellchecker for their efforts.
