Hemi Hakena - Senior Kapa Haka Break-upThe senior campus Kapa Haka celebrated a very successful year with a break-up at Camp Omaui on the 20/21 September. We were blessed with a wonderful presentation from Dr Nichola Voice on Taonga puoro-Māori musical instruments. The celebration was full of laughter, way too much kai, fireside waiata, kaimoana collecting and lots of whanau time.We had the opportunity to present Matua and Pa with two beautiful kahu huruhuru.Thank you to all whanau who have been amazing in their support of their rangatahi this year, senior management, our tutors and our wonderful rangatahi.Ngā mihi nui

Principal’s Comment

Whanau Report

Andy WoodPrincipal

The decision to stand down as principal was not an easy one. Leading a school such as James Hargest College is a privilege and an honour, and likely to be the pinnacle of anyone’s leadership career. I have enjoyed this position immensely, and given my best to a school I have loved for well over 30 years. When the conviction comes that it is time to move over and let someone else bring fresh eyes and ideas, it is not an easy thing to deal with.

I hope to continue my contribution to public education, and to school leadership in particular, in other ways for a number of years yet. I am proud to be a public servant, and to be associated with delivering the highest possible quality of schooling in the public system.

I will have been in teaching for 42 years, and principal of Hargest for 10 years. In that time I have seen many changes. Something that has not changed is the potential power of the

mentoring relationship between a student and a teacher; the opportunity to invest faith, hope, expectation, skill, and useful feedforward into a young person’s life. Even the opportunity just to invest a warm smile is valuable. The relational aspect of life at school will never change and remains at the heart of a teacher’s sense of vocation.

There is plenty of water to pass under the bridge before I leave, at the end of Term 1 next year. The school has enormous depth of teaching and leadership capability within its staff, and I have a high level of confidence our Board will make a wise appointment. Meantime, it is “business as usual” here at Hargest.

Nga mihi nui

Enrolments for 2020 are very strong, and we are humbled by the confidence shown by the community in James Hargest College.

Hargest is not eligble for the Government’s new $150 payment per student in lieu of parent fees and donations. The scheme is attracting significant pushback as schools point out to the Government that the “Operations Grant” is woefully inadequate for the provision of everything expected of schools, and $150 simply doesn’t “cut the mustard”. The BOT will be watching this space closely.

Our Principal, Andy Wood, advised the Board well before our public announcement of his retirement late last term. The position of Principal is currently being advertised, with the Board hoping to announce a new appointee by the end of the year. We regard this as the most important decision we will ever make!

Rhiane taught every level, from Year 9 to Year 13 .He is a highly respected teacher and role model to all students on and off the rugby field. Rhiane loved literature and the language of his subject and this led to very successful classrooms. His colleagues

The Blake Young Leader Award is presented every year to students all around the country who show great leadership in making a positive change towards a better future for our communities and our planet earth.

Sir Peter Blake is one of New Zealand’s greatest heroes. He was a world- famous sailor, adventurer and environmentalist who never gave up on his dreams. He sailed in five round-the-world yacht races and kept trying until he finally won it on his fifth try – taking him 17 years! He also won the Americas Cup for New Zealand – twice!

Sir Peter Blake couldn’t have done these things if he didn’t believe in himself. His style of leadership was to build a great team and empower them to be strong individually, but to work together to succeed. He is a great example of leadership, and how, through hard work and self-belief, you can achieve your dreams.

Devon Pirini was awarded the Blake Leader Award at James Hargest Junior because he displays great leadership qualities that Sir Peter himself would have recognised.

Devon is a positive role model. He is consistently caring, kind and respectful. He makes strong decisions to do the right thing regardless of peer pressure or social standing. Devon is willing to take on extra responsibilities and is respected and liked by his peers and teachers alike. He takes on leadership within sport and gives back to his sport through refereeing. Devon conducts himself with a high degree of integrity and upholds the integrity of others at all times. He carries a lot of mana and is

Blake Young Leader AwardJunior Campus

highly regarded within the entire school community. Devon is integral in team building and works tirelessly at motivating others, leading by example and living by the values his whanau have raised him with. He is a mature, outgoing and level headed young person who takes everything in his stride and is humble about the positive impact he has on others. Devon naturally possesses leadership skills and qualities that holds him in good stead for being a fine recipient of the Blake Young Leader award. Congratulations Devon!

Thank you to Kate van der Weert from Westpac for presenting Devon with his award at assembly.

Final Day for Senior Students

Tuesday 5 November 2019

Compulsory classes will finish on Tuesday 5 November for all Year 11-13 students. However, all teachers will be in their scheduled classrooms for the following two days Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 November. This time is set aside for pre-advertised and arranged tutorial, one-to-one help, giving feedforward on exam answers, or completion of Internal Assessments.Subject teachers may contact you with a plan for your son/daughter. We ask you to support the teachers and arrange for your son/daughter to attend classes that have been advised. This time can be most valuable for some re teaching, confirming understanding, practising exam questions and, in some cases, completing an Internal Assessment. From Friday 8 November (the day NCEA exams officially begin), there will be an extensive range of tutorials available. These are often arranged across a Department and it may not be your son/daughter’s teacher delivering the tutorial. When students are at school they need to be with a teacher in their classroom or working quietly in the Library. Year 11 and 12 students must wear school uniform on all occasions. From this date, Year 13 may wear tidy mufti when they come to school.

For the first time in history the Hargest Gold A netball team won B grade in a gripping final. The tone for the Nelson SISS tournament was set after beating SGHS A team for the first time in 20 years. Going into the tournament ranked a lowly 21st, opposition underestimated us. However, our strengths were in our skills and connection on and off the court. Resulting in winning game after game. The Coach Rochelle Van Beek and Manager Sue Yeo were both passionate and dedicated towards the success of our team. For them and many supporters it was very rewarding seeing us demonstrate everything we have been taught. Determination secured the semi final against Waimea ranked 1st. This was convincingly won 30-21. Which then led us to a guaranteed place in A grade for 2020, and the final later that day. Credit to the tough time playing in prem grade this season, we all gained resilience and knew that success was not only in the score, but in the journey. This resilience was paramount in the final as we closely chased Riccarton throughout the game. Key to Gold A, all of us again, lifted one another. The nail biting final quarter was fiercely fought, from five down to our team being 29 all seconds before the final whistle blew. We were tied!! Under a pressure cooker playoff, to win, either team had to be two goals ahead. Patience, tenacity and cool heads enabled us to score those last two goals and win B grade. This was a fitting tribute to farewell our only Year 13 player Kayla Tufui. Winning the grade was the pinnacle of an entire seasons hard work, dedication and strong bonds between us as players, with the coach and management.

Hockey

Once again JHC Hockey Boys are a force to be reckoned with down on the turf at Turnbull Thomson Park.

We just had the one team of boys this year and they developed well over the season. A very cold but enjoyable competition was held in Dunedin during Term 3 at the Taieri Exchange. Tournament week was at home in Invercargill but the boys spent each day together. When they weren’t on the turf preparing for or playing rival teams they were enjoying group activities around the province. Everyone agrees the team went from strength to strength

and were exciting to watch by the last game. Roll on next year as this group of young and talented players hit the turf running.

JHC Girls’ Hockey Team this year are our best performers in the last 10 years. Despite a slow start and several games to get the team sorted these girls made progress in leaps and bounds, The Taieri exchange competition was played under freezing conditions but with the extra sideline encouragement from former Hargest player Emma Ryan the team developed some valuable strategies. By the time the girls headed off to tournament in Timaru they knew they were up for the challenge. Getting to the semi - finals and getting 4th over all was an outstanding effort.

Thank you to Mrs Blair for giving her support for this amazing opportunity. The team were given a place in the finals. Congratulations!

As the result of competing in the Oceania Junior Cup in Australia throughout the year, Cormac Buchanan has been asked to trial for both the Red Bull Rookies Cup (Europe) and Asia Talent Cup (Asia) series for 2020. No New Zealand rider has even made the cut before so to even be invited to attend the selection events is achievement we are proud for Cormac to have reached. He will be trialling in Spain and Malaysia - an incredible opportunity for him to compete against riders from around the world. Cormac has also met Yamaha New Zealand to formalise a potential contract for the New Zealand Championships next year as their 150cc development rider.

We are undertaking a big relabelling project in the fiction section of the library. We will be organising all of the books by genre to help

students find the type of books they enjoy reading and that means stickering and re-barcoding each book. To help us complete this

project in a reasonable time-frame, we would love some volunteers from the community to help with the labeling and shelving of

books. The volunteers don’t need to have any prior knowledge to help us out.

The dates for helping at the moment are: Tuesday 22nd, Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th October

from 9.30 - 11am.

Please email Kirsty at [email protected] to let me know if you can make any of these sessions.

Volunteers wanted in the library

On the last Wednesday of the term, the school launched the latest edition of Interrobang, a magazine of creative writing and art by the students.

An audience gathered in the library to hear authors read their work, including New Zealand poet Cilla McQueen. A variety of students and parents attended and the magazine sold well. Copies can be bought from school reception

Top right: Students working on their business idea

The Young Enterprise BP Business Challenge was held at the JHC Senior Campus during the last 3 days of Term 3. Over 80 students from JHC, SBHS and Aparima College experienced a hands-on learning experience where they developed skills to create and run a business. After 3 days of hard work, students pitched their ideas to a panel of judges from local businesses.

Congratulations to the winning team “Face Link” who were a combination of JHC, SBHS and Aparima students.

As we move towards the end of term 3, we’ve noticed that there are some students and families who are unsure of the way we use devices at the Junior Campus.

Below is a summary:Phones are not considered learning devices• They should not be used at school at

anytime unless the teacher has given permission e.g. to text or call home because an after school game has been cancelled.

• If phones are brought to school, they should be handed in for safe storage until it is time to go home.

Devices for learning• No teacher - no device. Devices are for

learning and are used under teacher supervision and direction during class time.

• There are two lunch times each week where students can catch up on work and complete homework with their devices in the ICT room.

• The three strike system is used for misdemeanours.

Device use at homeOur children will be using computers and technology for the rest of their lives – you are in the best position of being able to get them off to a safe and positive start. Netsafe has 7 tips for Parents and Whanau which give advice about online safety. For further information go to: www.netsafe.org.nz/online-safety-for-parents/1. Understand: Read about the

potential online risks, challenges and sometimes illegal behaviour young people face to understand what may happen

2. Learn: Ask your child about what they do, how they use devices and who they talk to, to learn about their activities. Check in regularly to see what has changed

3. Explore: Take the time yourself to explore the sites, apps and technologies your child uses to improve your knowledge and understand their experience

4. Agree: Create a family code with your child to agree on what they can do online including sites to visit, appropriate behaviours, privacy settings and limits

5. Start: Recognise each child has unique needs, but some online safety concepts are universal. Start by teaching yours the Five tips to help your child thrive

6. Model: Be a good example to your child. Make sure you role model the sort of behaviours you want to see your child use online and offline

7. Plan: Make a plan so everybody knows what to do if something goes wrong and where you will be able to get advice and support in challenging times

Our experience at the Junior Campus suggests that limiting recreational screen time and keeping technology in family spaces, rather than bedrooms are good practices.

We strongly recommend that all students from year 7 - 12 are equipped with a personal device next year. Since introducing 1:1 device use with a pilot class 4 years ago, we have been ‘rolling up’ a 1:1 device learning environment year by year. During this time the school has transformed many of its other systems to digital platforms. Students in all year 7-11 classes this year now routinely use access to their school digital platform (Google for Education) for their normal work. Device use is about ‘which technology is best’ - device or paper and pen, and often this means using both at once. Next year we continue rolling up this process. It is important that we prepare students for their future, not our past!

Which Device? As a school, we are comfortable for students to bring their preferred device to school. We do not advocate one device over another. Students typically use a range of devices including iPads, Laptops,

chrome books and tablets. As a primary device we recommend the following minimum specifications:• Minimum screen size of 7 inches

(minimum usable resolution of 1024 x 600)

• Running iOS11.0+, or Android 6.0+, Mac OSX 10.11+ (El Capitan) or Windows 10

• Battery life of 5-6 hours• Wireless Capability• Minimum storage for tablets of 32GB

(due to the increasing size of apps)• Google Chrome installed (Google

Cloud Print is used for printing from student devices)

• Protective case strongly recommended• Bluetooth keyboard or keyboard/

tablet case combination is recommended, particularly for smaller tablets less than 9” e.g ipad mini

We recommend buying a device that is or can be updated to the latest operating system as this will give the device a longer life and allow newly introduced apps to be used.

The Health Nurse is available at the Junior Campus in Term 4. If you have any concerns please phone the school office and we will arrange for the Health Nurse to contact you. If students wish to see the Health Nurse they are able to make an appointment by placing a request in the green post box in the office foyer.

Medical CertificatesSenior Campus

If your child is absent for more than three days due to illness, a medical certificate may be required. There is a high level of correlation between attendance and academic achievement. We need students to be in class whenever possible.

A reminder to students to come to the office and sign out if you are leaving during the school day. Parents/caregivers are to come into the office to collect you and are not to go directly to the classroom. If you are returning later please come back through the office and sign back in.
