Tena Koutou1. Congratulations to

Jacob Mika who has been elected on the BOT as student representative. We look forward to his contribution to the board.

2. Work is underway on both campuses for the replacement of the coal boilers. This should ensure more efficient and consistent heating in our learning spaces. Plans have been finalised for an all weather multi purpose turf on the junior campus with this project due to be completed in term one next year. The turf will replace the existing tennis courts which are being developed into a car park.

selection evening. This can be a confusing time especially for families new to NCEA so please contact us if your son or daughter needs further assistance. Our Year 8 and some Year 9 students are also choosing subjects for 2021. These subject selections help identify our staffing needs for next year so it is important that our students make informed choices and I thank parents and caregivers for assisting them.Good luck to all our Year 7&8 students for your Athletic sports next week. I look forward to watching you compete and support each other. Parents are more than welcome to attend.

Kia ora whanauIt was great to welcome back our students this week which, for our seniors, is the final weeks of preparation for the end of year external examinations. I want to acknowledge our Year 11-13 students for their effort and conduct while sitting evidence exams at the end of last term. Students should now be entrenched in a routine of regular study and revision. A reminder that reports for Years 11-13 will be issued on Friday 23 October. I’m sure our Year 13 students are also looking forward to our school ball (version 3) at the end of this month, an event that is traditionally a highlight for many school students. It was nice to informally meet many parents last night at our Year 10-12 course

Isolation Poetry CompetitionNZ Southland Literacy Association

Congratulation to Eulalia Terra Theodoro for winning first place in the Year 9 and 10 Isolation Poetry Competition (Term 3) which was open to Southland students years 1-10.

The competition celebrated International Literacy Day, and students wrote a poem about their isolation experience from earlier in the year. Eulalia’s poem appears below:

IsolationAt the table, I sitSurroundedYet,Alone

I read,I watch,I hear

Information comes inSuffocating me Taking over my thoughts

“Stay in”, they say

So I stay putDrowning in my own solitudeNowhere to goNo escape

So I speculate,I foresee,I foreshadow,I wait

At the table, I sitSurroundedYet,Alone

Leana BreenWe are very pleased to introduce Leana to our school community. She has just taken up the position of Student Account Manager/Receptionist at the main office of the Senior Campus. You will continue to receive a very warm welcome from her as you have done from Tricia and Helen over the years. Leana comes with a wealth of experience with school systems, having spent several years in a similar role at another secondary school in Invercargill. While the Student Management System eg Kamar may be different we expect she will adapt very quickly. Please give her a

warm welcome next time you are at school, paying your accounts or dropping off your child’s lunch or PE gear! In her spare time Leana enjoys time with her friends and family, tramping, camping and reading.

WelcomeStaff News

Emma CoatsworthEmma has taught at the Junior Campus since 2008. She has been a caring and passionate teacher who always sought to deliver high quality, integrated and responsive learning for her students. Emma has been a supportive and valued member of our Junior Campus team and has been more than a colleague to many. Emma has taken on many challenges over those years. She ran the Junior Campus student council, enabling the students to be engaged in making changes for the benefit of us all, and she REALLY got our School Socials up and moving with lighting displays, great

music and fun activities. Emma was a member of the Sloggers group (slow joggers) even though she is a really good runner she would help the group keep slogging. Emma has helped run our Facebook page over the last couple of years which has really helped us to celebrate all the great things our students do. Always up for a new challenge, Emma took on Teacher in Charge of P.E and found she had a real passion for leading the subject. This passion has led her to a new job with Sports Southland facilitating sport in schools. We are sad to be losing Emma but helped by the fact that she will continue to work with us in her new position. So it’s not Haere Ra, rather Ka kite anō ki a Emma!

Paula RooneyPaula Rooney has worked a Teacher Aide at the Junior Campus since 2015. Over that time Paula has worked with many students, supporting them in their learning and their development at the Junior Campus. She brings a sense of structure and security to the students she works with and builds strong relationships with them. She is caring, empathetic, understanding and very patient. Thank you for all the mahi you have done over the years for our students Paula, and all the best with your new job working with younger children.

Attention 2020 Year 9 students. Exciting news! Students will be asked to confirm your option subjects for 2021. There will be the choice of two new and exciting options, Drama and Agricultural & Horticultural Science!

Year 10 Drama will teach a range of valuable skills that can be applied to many aspects of your life. Take a look at the following list - the 8 ‘C’s of Drama:

Creativity - the ability to respond to situations inventively and seek solutions

Confidence - the ability to act and react to situations and to people

Communication - listening and expressing ideas to others Compassion - the ability to see things from another’s point of view

Culture - the exploration of difference and unity

Collaboration - the ability to work with others on a shared task

Critical Thinking - learning to identify and evaluate evidence to guide decision making

Challenge - being outside of your comfort zone

Year 10 Options

Agricultural and Horticultural Science is an applied science taught at all year levels in the school.

At Year 10, the course covers growing plants, their processes and their uses. We also study a variety of animals that are farmed; their behavior and structure, and how we use them. Half of class time is spent on practical activities in the horticulture area or in the classroom. Students can grow seeds and plant them into the school garden, take cuttings and grow a range of plants from them. They have a small garden plot to look after.

Agricultural and Horticultural enterprises in Southland already employ significant numbers of people. Our department maintains contact with the industry and runs field trips to farms, vegetable growers and other examples such as seed and wool industries.

DebatingSouthland Secondary Schools debating Competition held at JHC September 6.

We hosted the competition at JHC and the uni student debaters travelled from Dunedin to adjudicate. It was a tremendously successful competition with our school taking three of the four cups.

After a forum initiated by the student leaders at JHC, it was decided the uni students would run a Southland development squad tutored through Google Classroom by their debaters. It is an exciting prospect because it will enhance debating in all the participating schools.

factory, Riverstone Castle and also took photos of French related objects. The students also did some activities in French and ate French styled meals, including escargots.

Interrobang

On 15 September, the school launched the latest edition of its creative writing and art magazine Interrobang.Student writers performed their work, the magazine was on sale, and novelist Lynley Dear gave an informative lecture on her own work and what drives her to create. The picture left shows the team that put the magazine together. On the left is the Editor, Natasha Guha-Tyrie, who chose the writing and handled all the correspondence with the writers and artists. On the right is Chief Designer Mikah Buchanan, who did most of the layout, posters and other design work. Seated at the front is Kaylee Martin, who designed the front cover.

The first run of the magazine rapidly sold out, and more are being printed. Copies can be bought for $5 from reception at the school.

English TutorialsWeeks 1 - 3 Term 4Students are encouraged to write literary essays on their written text under time constraints as best revision practice. Their teachers will assess the essays and give them feedback for the next step. In their Close Reading of Unfamiliar Text booklets they have practice tests to complete. Due to the lateness of the External Examinations specialised tutorials will take place in Weeks 4 and 5. The times and subject will be posted on notices and in Classroom. If a student requires a individual tutorial with any English staff they are to organise that independently.

TutorialsFinal Day for Senior Students

Tuesday 10 November 2020

Compulsory classes will finish on Tuesday 10 November for all Year 11-13 students. However, all teachers will be in their scheduled classrooms for the following two days: Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 November. This time is set aside for pre-advertised and arranged tutorial, one-to-one help, giving feedforward on exam answvers, or completion of Internal Assessments.Subject teachers may contact you with a plan for your son/daughter. We ask you to support the teachers and arrange for your son/daughter to attend classes that have been advised. This time can be most valuable for some re teaching, confirming understanding, practising exam questions and, in some cases, completing an Internal Assessment. From Monday 16 November (the day NCEA exams officially begin), there will be an extensive range of tutorials available. These are often arranged across a Department and it may not be your son/daughter’s teacher delivering the tutorial. When students are at school they need to be with a teacher in their classroom or working quietly in the Library. Year 11 and 12 students must wear school uniform on all occasions. From this date, Year 13 may wear tidy mufti when they come to school.

GymSport 2020Junior Campus

On Friday 18 September, James Hargest Junior Campus had four GymSport teams compete in the annual competition. This year it was a little different due to Covid as we were unable to combine with all the other Southland schools. But this didn’t stop us from putting our best foot forward. The teams were combined of Year 7 & 8 students and they all competed on the vault, beam and mat. Each team had also spent the term making a group routine that had to consist of different gymnastics techniques. Our teams all performed to their very best and enjoyed the opportunity to show off to their peers and family the skills they have been working on over the term. Congratulations to you all for your hard work and dedication.

HockeySouth Island Premiership Tournament

This year there were changes in the hockey tournament structure due to Covid. JHC girls first X1 qualified for the South Island Premiership Tournament based on their 3rd place finish last year at Audrey Timlin. The girls had a fantastic experience playing with some of the top school teams in the country and represented the school well. The young team matured through the week and showed true Southland grit against top class players and future Black Sticks.

Although we didn’t win our matches our performance was respectable and something to be very proud of. The girls were extremely grateful for the opportunity to go to tournament when many other sports had been cancelled

CAIMS Tournament Christchurch

It was great for the students to see that even though they are from a small city at the bottom of the country, that we can still mix it with the best from the big smoke! Along with the super sporting success, it was great to see the students sharing positive experiences with their peers, embracing the billeting experience and making new friends. The staff and supporters were incredibly proud of our students. Thanks to all the supporters who made the trip up and all the staff for their mahi (especially Waine the bus driver).

Special thanks to the following businesses who supported our tournament fundraising efforts: Bowmont Meats, DT Kings, Miele Apiaries, Morrifield Greenhouses, and The Headache Clinic.

Thirty-six Year 7 & 8 students participated in badminton, hockey, netball and volleyball attended the Canterbury Intermediate and Middle Schools Invitation (CAIMS) tournament in Christchurch from 15 - 17 September. The majority of students made the long bus trip to and from Christchurch and were billeted by our wonderful friends from Cobham Intermediate School in Christchurch.

Our teams faced fierce competition over all sports throughout the tournament. The students were wonderful ambassadors for our school and Southland, achieving our most successful CAIMS tournament results ever, with all teams placing in the top three!
