Prepared by Joseph Walsh Studio - May 2016 Design Studio Internship Programme | Information & Guidelines JOSEPH WALSH | JOSEPH WALSH STUDIO Joseph Walsh is an internationally renowned designer maker, whose work reflects an understanding and sympathetic use of material, an intimate relationship between finding forms and creating structures and a continuity and resolve from concept to making. Based in Co Cork, Ireland, his studio employs a skilled team who achieve his ambitious pieces. From both culturally and academically diverse backgrounds such as the Furniture College Letterfrack (Ireland), the Shinrin Takumi Juku (Japan) and Les Compagnons du Devoir (France), the team continuously challenge existing practice to realise his challenging concepts in an innovative environment. With an ethos of continual learning and dedication to excellence, Joseph Walsh Studio has now established itself as one of the leading studio workshops in Europe. JOSEPH WALSH STUDIO INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME The Joseph Walsh Studio internship programme offers a 9-month design studio internship to a limited number of candidates. Under the supervision of a Senior Design Technician at the studio, those who participate in the programme will work alongside members of both the design and workshop teams. By the end of the programme, which includes instruction from members of the team as well as master classes from external participants, the intern will have understanding and knowledge of each phase in the Joseph Walsh Studio commissioning process, from concept to installation. ENTRY CRITERIA § Successful applicants will have completed a recognised third level course and/or completed a basic apprenticeship programme. § They will be organised and efficient, have the ability to work successfully as part of a team and have the desire to learn. § Interns will be required to supply their own hand tools and hand-held power tools. PERIOD & DURATION OF INTERNSHIP This is a 9-month internship programme, commencing in September and running until May of the following year. The programme is full-time with interns having the same annual leave allocation as the studio team over that period (i.e. 15 days). DELIVERY OF INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME Each intern will completed their internship programme under the supervision of a Senior Design Technician at Joseph Walsh Studio.

PROGRAMMEDETAILSThe programme will be divided into three modules. Module2(4–6months)- Modelmakingprocess;woodorfoamsculpting,photoshootandclientpresentation- Technicaldrawingsandengineeringspecifications- Anintroductiontoandunderstandingofmaterialselectionandpreparation- Anintroductiontoandunderstandingofthemakingprocess
Module3(7–9months) - Finishing- Finalphotoshoot- Packing- Installation
Overall§ InternLog;eachinternwillberequiredtokeepalogordiary,recordingtheirdailyexperiencesand
scheduleofwork.Thiswillbesubmitted to their supervisoronamonthlybasis.At theendof theprogrammeboththeinternandthestudiowillretainacopy.
§ JosephWalsh Studioworkshop standard; it is expected that all internswill, on completion of theprogramme,havereachedtheJosephWalshStudiostandardofworkinanumberofareas.Thisnotonlyappliestotechnicalabilityandskill,butalsotoorganisational,timemanagementandproblemsolvingskillsaswellasdemonstrationofinnovationintheworkandintheworkenvironment.

RobertInghamRobertInghamtrainedatbothLoughboroughCollegeandLeedsCollegeofArt,followedbyadegreeatLeedsUniversity.AsaneducatorheassistedJohnMakepeaceintheestablishmentofParnhamCollegebefore becoming Principle for twenty years. He has also worked with Buckinghamshire ChilternsUniversity College, the Centre for Furniture Craftsmanship inMaine,GMITLetterfrack Collegeand hasworked with JosephWalsh Studio, in an advisory capacity, since 2006. He has exhibited widely, is amember of Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, has been granted the Freedom of the City ofLondonandisaFellowoftheSocietyofDesignerCraftsmen.
EXTERNALCOLLABORATIONSInternswillhavetheopportunitytoparticipateinprojectswithexternalcollaboratorsincluding:ArupsConsultantsfromArups,aglobalfirmofdesigners,planners,engineersandtechnicalspecialists,whoofferingabroadrangeofprofessionalservicesforthebuiltenvironment,haveworkedwithJosephWalshStudioonvariousprojectssince2010SimplyRhinoSimplyRhinoLtd.,supplyRhinoSoftwareandallitskeyPlug-Ins,offersupportandhaveprovidedexperttrainingintheUKforoveradecade.InadditiontoJosephWalshStudiotheirclientshaveincludedAntonyGormley,Foster+Partners,HeatherwickStudio,MarkNewsonLtd.andZahaHadidArchitects
REVIEWANDASSESSMENTAttheendofthe internshipprogrammethe internwillhaveaformalreviewwiththeirsupervisorandJosephWalsh. Internswillbeassessedbasedonbothintellectualandtechnicianabilityaswellastheiroverallcommitmenttotheprogramme.
EXPENSESJosephWalshStudioInternshipsareunpaidhoweverallparticipantswillreceivean€800euromonthlyinexpensestoassistinaccommodationandsubsistence.
