- 1. Graphic style In the presentation I will be introducing each
graphics style and I will be illustrating, discussing and
evaluating the examples of the art style in at least 4 games. The
graphic style that I will be evaluating will be cellshading,
photorealism, exaggeration and abstraction. I will discuss which
genres of game style might be most commonly used in and explain the
effects it has on the player. In each graphics style I will be
evaluating the specific graphical style.
2. Colour theory Colour theory is a method using a certain
colours combination mixed with each other only using the colours in
the colour wheel. When it comes to computer gaming colour theory is
extremely important to let the game standout and be unique for
example when it comes to creating posters and covers and the actual
video game as all the colours have to complement each other and
stay consistent. There are three colour groups that are very
important are the primary colours, secondary colours and tertiary
colours. The three primary colours that are the base of the colour
wheel are (red, yellow and blue) as we mix those colours they
create all the colours in the wheel of colours. 3. Cel-shading
Cel-shading is not a photorealistic but is a specific design to
make computer graphics to look like the image was hand drawn.
Cel-shading is specially used to give the video game a more comic
book look to it by using a thicker out lines makes the image look
less realistic and more comic. 4. Game one-Crackdown Crackdown is a
third person shooter game, which open world. Crackdown is a very
non photorealistic game, the game looks like the style of a comic
book or cartoon. The game is cel-shaded which makes the characters
look more shadowy and mysterious. 5. Game two-Dragon ball z The
game is a video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles
based on the anime and manga series Dragon Ball. The game resembles
real drawn animations. The game recreates a style of tradition 2D
Series. The game is a very good artistic design which creates a
very realistic game thats hand drawn. 6. Game three-The Fairly Odd
Parents The game is a released for the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo
GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and the PC in 2003. It is based on
the famous Nickelodeon cartoon show, The Fairly Odd Parents. The
game looks very hand drawn as they characters look very simple to
draw. The game uses simple colours, and imitates the style of a
cartoon game. The game gives the impression that your playing in a
cartoon. 7. The genre and effects of cel-shading The genre of game
this style might be most commonly used in the type of game that are
aimed for young people and comic games. The effects that
cel-shading has on the player is that it makes the player feel as
if they were apart of the game. The game gives them that cartoony
experience and the style was used for many games as it was new and
fresh. 8. Evaluation Cel-shading is a very difficult technique that
is very well used in games. Cel-shading has a very nonrealistic
sense to it as it looks very hand drawn. Celshading is seen as very
childish art style as it contains mostly things that are anime or
cartoon. 9. Photorealism Photorealism is a genre that is based on
how painting is using cameras and photographs. This creates a
photogenic image, the images look very real however they are
difficult to be recognised on a photograph. The graphics is their
to make something for example the environment to look very
realistic and real. 10. Game one- Modern warfare- call a duty . The
game is a first-person shooter video game developed by Infinity
Ward and published by Activision for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and
Microsoft Windows. The game is very photorealistic giving that
feeling that the game is real. Advance technology is used in the
game to make the game look as real as it can, to give the user that
feeling of being in the game when playing. For example, the
lighting etc. 11. Game two-Crysis The game is a firstperson shooter
video game developed by Crytek, published by Electronic Arts for
Microsoft Windows and released in November 2007. the game is very
realistic as it has the right colours and light and its has highly
detailed surroundings. The game is very clear, this gives the user
feeling that the game is real. 12. Game three- Battlefield The game
is a first-person shooter video game developed by EA Digital
Illusions CE and published by Electronic Arts. The game renders
graphics in real time as its first person shooter. The game looks
like something will appear to be on a photographic. The images in
the game looks really real that they are hard to recognise from
photograph 13. The genre and effects of photorealism The style can
be any genre from action adventure to horror. The majority of a
photorealism game are first person shooter. The effects that the
game has on the player is that it looks so real for them and its
something that people would do in the real world but on a game. 14.
Evaluation Photorealism is liked technique that is very realistic
and real. It makes the audience feel like they are actually in the
game when playing. The game creates a very photogenic image that is
very well designed. 15. Exaggeration Exaggeration is something that
is completely something different to what you would normally
expect. Exaggeration is things that are very over the top for
example the character is not human and is something strangely
different. Exaggeration is used to make something look more better
than it actually is. 16. Game one-Battle stadiumD.O.N The game is a
Japanese fighting game for the GameCube and PlayStation 2 featuring
characters from the three popular manga series. The game is over
exaggerate a lot especially with the environment there in. for
example the levels is a fire background. The game is very similar
in art in cartoon. 17. Game two- Final Fantasy The game is a
roleplaying video game developed by Square as the seventh
instalment in the Final Fantasy series. The game is very well over
exaggerated you can tell by the characters as the game is very
similar to anime. 18. Game three-Halo The game is first person
shooter thats released for the Xbox video game console. The game is
very over exaggerated and the art style is where the artist
exaggerates many things within the game. The games art style is
used for anime and manga typically. 19. The genre and effects of
exaggeration The game can be on anime which the art style focuses
on using over the top graphics. The amount of the things are most
very much exaggerated. The effects that exaggeration has on the
player Is that the game takes it to the next level and makes the
game seem to good. 20. Evaluation I learnt that exaggeration is
also a very well liked art style as those who watch shows that
anime series love playing the game. This gives them the feeling of
living a anime life and running away from the real world out here.
21. Abstraction Abstraction is an art style that doesn't want to be
realistic, it wants to stand out, be unique. The work created in
abstract may resemble some things but will have a lot of
differences to it or maybe have a lot of strange things in the
game. 22. Game one- Botanicula The game is a is a pointand-click
adventure game developed by Amanita Design. Thats released for
Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux. In the game there are 5 main
characters like a: leaf, feather, mushroom , poppy seed and a twig.
The art style of the game is unusual, and the black creature on the
right is unlike anything you've seen. This is very abstracted as it
stands out very well and doesnt look real whats so ever. 23. Game
two- Geometry wars The game is a minigame, thats updated version of
the game, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, is available for download
on the Xbox 360 via Xbox Live Arcade. In the game nothing is at all
human, or remotely anything except collective of shapes. The game
is so unreal and it stand out from the crowd so much. 24. Game
three- The unfinished swan The game is a by made by Giant Sparrow
for the PlayStation 3 and which is distributed on the PlayStation
Network. The game starts with a fully white space, the game is very
unrealistic and over exaggerated as the colours black and white
that are mostly used. The game is based on the prototype tech demo
and featured splatting gobs of black paint in an otherwise white
world. 25. The genre and effects of abstraction The graphical style
can appear on artistic, puzzle and creative game. The effects on
the player is that the game is really easy however it can get hard
when it comes to telling what things are. 26. Evaluation Ive learnt
that abstraction games are the complete opposite to photorealistic
as its very unrealistic and very different. Ive learnt that
abstract need stand out to the crowd and be very unique.
