Nitric acid, also known as Aqua Fortis, is a colorless
liquid. It is used in production of inorganic and
organic nitrates and nitro compounds for fertilizers,
dye intermediates and explosives. The principle
chemical produced from nitric acid is ammonium
nitrate.
Nitric acid is a strong acid that decomposes in the
presence of light into water and nitrogen dioxide and
oxygen.
Nitric acid is produced by catalytic oxidation of
ammonia. Nitric acid is continuously oxidized to nitric
oxide by air or oxygen, in presence of platinum
gauze, which acts as a catalyst in the reaction. The
reaction is as follows:

Majority of nitric acid sold commercially has a
concentration of 68% in water.
