Germany’s Automotive IndustryGermany's Automotive industry is one of the most important industries in the whole economy, contributing around 20 percent of all gross domestic product (GDP). The industry represents over 30 percent of passenger cars manufactured, close to 20 percent of all new registrations and boasting the largest concentration of OEM plants in Europe. By the end of 2015, the sector created a turnover of EUR 404 Billion and employing a workforce of over 792,500 workers.

Germany's Automotive Industry offers a huge opportunities for local and international sales along with sourcing that has lead to a huge export success story. Germany is one of the world leaders in manufacturing, accounting for 15 percent of the world's total production. This was seen in the increased demand of German produced passenger cars and light commercial vehicles represented by EUR 384 billion in turnover at the end

Section 1

AT A GLANCE

1. Germany is the the Automotive Hub of Europe and produced 5.708 million passenger cars and 375,000 commercial vehicles in 2015

2. About 77% of the manufactured vehicles are exported

3. German Automotive OEMs produced 15 million vehicles worldwide in 2015

4. The sector recorded a record turnover of EUR 384 billion and employed a workforce of over 775,000

5. There are over 40 OEM production sites located in Germany

6. 21 of the world’s top 100 automotive suppliers are German companies

7. R&D personnel within the German automobile industry reached a level of just about 100.000 in 2015. Around 792.500 are employed in the industry as a whole

of 2015. This turnover was reflected in the production of 5.7 million passenger cars being and over 375,000 trucks and buses manufactured in 2015.

Germany has achieved an export success. The domestic market generated a total revenue of EUR 133 billion. Over 77 percent of cars produced were ultimately destined for foreign countries, a new world record. This means that on a global scale, one if 5 cars produced globally is a car made by a German OEM.

German OEM's have been responsible for over one third of international R&D expenditure, accounting for EUR 17.7 billion in 2014. Also, German is responsible for 60 percent of European R&D growth. Over 100,000 people work in Germany's R&D field.

Global Market Perspective

The demand for German produced cars has remained strong, in particular for foreign markets that continue to demand vehicles that has been increasing by 3 percent annually. Germany was the most significant exporter of passenger cars in 2014, leading both Japan and South Korea.

Many of the German produced cars are exported to Germany's neighbor countries, which accounts for approximately 50 percent of exports. The USA follows with the second highest demand for German vehicles followed by Asian markets. The market for high end premium vehicles is very high in the USA and China. For many German OEM's China remains the primary and important export market for high end luxury cars.

The high end German luxury production owes its thanks to its work-force, world class R&D, excellent infrastructure and its automotive heritage. The production of premium segment cars researched 36 percent of the western European light vehicle production, and is expected to grow further.

There is a consensus amongst industry analysts that the premium market segment will grow faster than the total passenger car segment within the next decades. This can be due to the increased demand for high-value, premium small and compact-sized vehicles and premium SUVs. The German market can meet this increased demand. Most German based OEMs have already launched or are intending to launch new products to meet the premium market segment. With excellent product standards, sustainable development and innovation as well as the know-how based on the country's automotive manufacturer tradition. This will strengthen Germany's position as a leading hub for manufacturing.

Worldwide Reputation

Germany's reputation of its "Made in Germany" label is seen in a positive light, that is attributed to durability, efficiency, safety and quality. The drive for German OEMS and manufacturers to maintain

Founded in 1913, BMW started building airplane engines in 1917. In 1923, BMW started building motorbikes and eventually in 1928 they started with the production of cars. Shortly after the Second World War, BMW's factories were dismantled by the Allied Forces and the company was only allowed to manufacture household utensils and bicycles.

In 1950 BMW returned to the production of cars. After a slow start, the company focused on luxury cars, becoming one of the most admired carmakers in the world.

The parent plant of the BMW Group is located in the north of Munich, directly at the Olympic Park. Located just beside the BMW Group plant are the Group Headquarters in the BMW four-cylinder, the BMW Museum and the BMW Welt.

The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) consists of more than 620 companies involved in production for the automotive industry in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The members are divided into three manufacturer groups automobile manufacturers, automotive suppliers, and trailers, special bodies, buses. These three manufacturer groups find their representation in three divisions each assigned a managing director. More than 70 employees in 20 departments actively pursue the interests of the German automotive industry. The President, Matthias Wissmann, heads the VDA which has its headquarters in Berlin.

The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) nationally and internationally promotes the interests of the entire German automotive industry in all fields of the motor transport sector, for example in international trade and economic, transport and environmental policy, technical legislation, standardizing and quality assurance. To an equal extent, VDA promotes services in standardization, research and quality. It organizes the world’s largest trade fair for mobility, the IAA (International Motor Show), as well as other congresses and it regularly publishes on all automotive topics.

The origins of the IAA can be traced back to more than 100 years. In 1897, 8 motor vehicles were exhibited to the public at the Bristol Hotel in Berlin.

From these humble beginnings, a regular exhibition was established that, due to its high visitor turnout, had to be separated into an alternating exhibition of passenger cars and commercial vehicles in 1991. In odd-numbered years the IAA Cars is held in Frankfurt; even-numbered years see the IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hannover.

The automotive world meets at the IAA Commercial Vehicles. It is the world’s leading trade fair for mobility, transportation and logistics. Its comprehensive innovations, exhibitors from several industries, discussions and, last but not least, the expert visitor structure represent a unique profile.

The IAA Commercial Vehicles is special because practically all the suppliers are represented alongside the manufacturers. The IAA is therefore the world’s only mobility fair which represents the entire commercial vehicle industry along the whole value-added chain, providing the best conditions for good business.

With its broad spectrum the IAA provides a comprehensive overview of the international commercial vehicle industry:

IAA Hannover Event 2016

The “New Mobility World logistics” will be held for the first time at the 66th IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover (22 - 29 September 2016). The goal of the initiative is to map out digitization, new logistic concepts, offers and services of the exhibitors in the commercial vehicles sector even more clearly and to address new companies and visitor groups.

“The New Mobility World logistics aims to create a content framework that fosters discussion and new contacts. After all, new and future-oriented themes are distinctly more dialogue-intensive”, said Matthias Wissmann, President of the VDA, talking about the further development of the IAA in Hanover.

The content of the conceptual framework will be mapped by the five thematic areas of Connected Vehicle, Assisted & Automated Driving, Alternative Powertrain, Urban Logistics and Transport Services. Within this framework there will be various programs presenting these thematic fields and the matching products of the IAA exhibitors. They will include a separate congress programme with discussion forums,

such as for instance the carIT Congress, and events focusing on “Last Mile” topics or networked and automated driving.

On the “Pitching Day” for start-up companies young enterprises will for the first time be given an opportunity to present their ideas and solutions at the IAA and establish contacts with the commercial vehicle industry. All the events will take place in the congress section in Hall 19 and be accompanied by exhibitions with opportunities for non-industry companies and start-ups to make presentations too.

In addition, the IAA exhibitors can participate in guided tours round the IAA that reflect their themes. Innovations, services and products can thus be presented appropriately. Interested visitors from the specific target group will be taken to the exhibitors’ stands on such tours.

In the “New Mobility World LIVE” demonstration area, exhibitors will be presenting products, services and applications in live demonstrations. Trial drives with electric commercial vehicles will also be possible.
