Dear Readers,

In celebration of the National Arts Month, Gazette features the Culture and Arts groups of the Institute; the Literatour Mindanao which is one of the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) National Committee on Literary Arts’ programs celebrating the literatures of the country; as well as promotes the album of Sebuano songs of staff member, Ms. Telet Amba.

It is not enough that we draw attention to the significance of culture in the arts playing a large role in human development for it also opens many possibilities because art, to borrow the ideas of the scholar Susanne K. Langer, “is the epitome of human life, the truest record of insight and feeling”.

With such cognizance, we get to understand that the love of one’s culture and its creative expressions make us proud of our own race; and, because of it, we begin to know our cultural identities that to some, can be both boon and bane – a discourse usually initiated by scholars in the academe.

The Gazette also gives attention to the Institute’s programs in research and extension, the visits of foreign scholars, the 9th national conference in Filipino, the foreign travels of our own scholars, news features on Newton-Agham scholar Charlie A. Lavilla, Jr., the first FabLab in Mindanao, the first MINSUPALA Art exhibit, the last of a two-part feature on the College of Nursing, and the first batch of our Campus Ambassadors.

The Gazette is proud to offer this issue and it is hoped that you will enjoy reading it.

Its strong thrusts in science, engineering, and technology programs and its establishment of

its own technology business incubator earned for MSU-IIT as the top choice in the establishment of a Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) facility for Mindanao.

The choice was based on a four-month study among the country’s seven (7) regions commissioned by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Nomura Research Institute (NRI) Singapore Pte. Ltd.. The study’s findings were discussed during the Seminar on Fab Lab Utilization in the Philippines at the JICA Philippine Office Auditorium in Makati City on February 16, 2016.

Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Edgar W. Ignacio, Vice Chancellor

for Research and Extension Dr. Jinky B. Bornales, and Fab Lab Mindanao Manager Lemuel Clark S. Velasco attended the seminar.

As a shared service facility (SSF) of the Department of Trade and Industry-Region X, FabLab Mindanao will focus on enhancing product design and development of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Region X through computer-aided design, prototyping, short-run production, and research and development.

According to the NRI, FabLab Mindanao in MSU-IIT can serve as a technology access center where local businesses gain access to basic design services with workshop offerings in equipment use and programmable micro controllers.

As an academic institution, MSU-IIT

provides training by incorporating the services of FabLab Mindanao in the laboratories of academic programs related to design and prototyping.

The NRI also recommended that FabLab Mindanao be a service bureau which will perform the research and prototyping functions of targeted industries, like the fabrication and automation of motor drivers for food processing and the pulping abaca fiber. With its strong link to the Institute’s in-house technology business incubator, FabLab Mindanao can also become a hub for the commercialization of innovations.

For the operations of FabLab Mindanao, the NRI proposed a four-phase business model. The last phase of the said model includes the possibility of starting original projects in micro rockets and micro satellites.

MSU-IIT could be the gateway for the world to understand Mindanao said visiting professor Dr. Toshiko Tsujimoto.

Dr. Tsujimoto, or Toshiko-san (Ms. Toshiko) as she prefers to be called, came to IIT for a lecture series on qualitative research to undergrad and graduate students of some of the colleges, as organized by the School of Graduate Studies.

Prior to the week-long lecture series, she was invited as plenary speaker to the Ika-9 na Pambansang Kumperensiya sa Filipino (9th National Conference on Filipino). Her lecture at the conference dealt with her experience of learning the Filipino language within and outside the Philippines.

During the course of her visit, Toshiko-san was introduced to the Institute’s extension programs: the Badjau community and the Bayug Island restoration.

She found this to be an impressive endeavor of the Institute, to do action researches that address issues and solving problems in the community. This sense of contribution to society in the academe, according to her, is interesting because she sees the different missions of Kyoto University and of MSU-IIT.

When asked about IIT’s presence in the ASEAN radar, Toshiko-san believes in the great potential of the Institute for exchange programs and academic integration, especially with the cultural diversity in Mindanao.

Her expectation and objective as a visiting professor was simple: to give what could be helpful to the Institute especially in terms of research and, at the same time, to learn something she could bring back to Japan.

She also adds that her visit to IIT, which is also her first visit to Mindanao, opened her eyes to the everyday life of the people in the island. She saw how people live harmoniously in a culturally diverse society which, she said, Manila clearly lacks and misrepresents.

According to Toshiko-san, while multiculturalism in the U.S., Europe, or Australia had been well studied, “the definition of multiculturalism [in Mindanao] will be very different from that of European countries.” She believes this diversity in Mindanao could be worth looking into especially by her fellow and student “Filipinologists” in Japan.

Toshiko-san looks forward to bringing her students in Mindanao to immerse them with the diverse reality in the Philippines.

Dr. Toshiko Tsujimoto is a Senior Researcher at Kyoto University Asian Studies Unit. She finished her Doctor of Literature (Sociology) at SungKongHoe University in South Korea. Dr. Tsujimoto was also a post-doctoral fellow at the Center for the Study of South Korea, University of Toronto.

Designed to precondition mindsets of units with extension services to include impact assessment as part of extension service planning, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development (OVCPD) conducted the Impact Evaluation (IE) Orientation on January 24, 2016 at the Institute Boardroom.

The IE Orientation featured Dr. Ma. Christina Duyaguit, Director of Institutional Planning and Development Services (IPDS) of OVCPD as speaker. Duyaguit just came from a technical course training on impact evaluation after being awarded with a full scholarship by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS).

Duyaguit explained the need to assess extension related policies, programs, and projects. As a guide, she also presented the

Theory of Change (TOC), a general format used to present the desired or expected results of an Impact Evaluation.

“In its simplest form, it describes the sequence of events that one expects the program to put in place that will lead to the desired outcomes” Duyaguit said. Participants were the members of the Institute Committee on Extension and Community Involvement (ICECI) composed of representatives from the different colleges and units of IIT.

OVCPD plans to conduct another orientation regarding IE this year to train the participants and to cover more extensively the actual procedures of the assessment. By then, interventions on the project may be given emphasis to establish whether such intervention benefit the beneficiaries.

The British Embassy awarded 26 scholars of the Newton Fund for 2016 at the British Ambassador’s residence in Forbes Park, Makati on February 3,

2016. IIT’s resident chemist Charlie A. Lavilla, Jr. is one of the four recipients of the PhD Scholarship.

The awarding was loaded with more great news. Launched in April 2014, the Newton Fund was supposed to initially end in 2019. However, the embassy announced in the awarding that they will be extending until 2021, also doubling the budget from £75 million to £ 150 million. This means that more aspiring scholars could benefit from the Newton Fund program.

According to Lavilla, the British Ambassador to the Philippines, Asif Ahmad, emphasized on the need for Filipinos to start innovating research projects instead of just replicating foreign projects. He believes that the Philippines has a pool of competitive and capable researchers. He hopes that such grant as the Newton-Agham could harness the talents of our researchers.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario Montejo resonated Ahmad’s enthusiasm. For him, such opportunity would lead the Filipinos to realize the dream of becoming a “technology self-reliant Philippines”.

Promoting Lanao’s indigenous literatures: IIT hosts NCCA’s Literatour in Mindanao

Promoting Lanao’s indigenous literatures: IIT hosts NCCA’s Literatour in Mindanao

Dr. Hope Sabanpan Yu

Mikha Marohombsar Alawi Dr. Steven Patrick Fernandez

The Office of Publication and Information (OPI) of MSU – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) hosted “Literatour in Mindanao and Forum” at the Institute Mini-Theater on

January 29, 2016, in cooperation with the Department of English of the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), and the National Power Corporation (NPC).

The Literatour is a series of literary tours and forums sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and Arts National Committee for Literary Arts (NCLA) chaired by Dr. Christine Godinez Ortega, OPI Director and faculty member of the English Department.

It aimed to promote the country’s literature through the works of Filipino writers and the places where the writers hail from therefore rich in literary history, hence the other project objective to promote these places as tourist destinations.

Literatour started in Cebu City last year with the University of San Carlos (USC) as its host headed by the Project Director Dr. Hope Sabanpan Yu, Director of the USC Cebuano Studies Center and the NCLA Coordinator for Central Visayas. Yu also came to MSU-IIT as a speaker during the Mindanao Literatour.

Literatour is one of the NCLA’s initiated projects to promote the literatures of the country inspired by the tour of Intramuros and

Chinatown conducted by the National Book Development Board based on the novels by young Filipinos. Food and places mentioned in the novels were visited and dishes described in the novels were likewise ordered by tour participants in the restaurants within the aforementioned areas.

At the USC, the forum focused on the writing of literary history. A panel of historians and writers critiqued papers submitted by selected fellows from Visayas and Mindanao including faculty members from the History Department of CASS. Later, there was a guided tour to Carcar City where participants viewed the gallery of Sebuano writers, visited the Carcar History Museum and held a brief forum on Cebu’s traditional drama such as the linambay.

The Luzon Literatour was held in Bacolor, Pampanga with its local groups as host. The Project Director was the poet from Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Allan Poppa, NCLA Coordinator for the NCR.

There were Crissotan performances, a lecture on the literary history of Bacolor, a book fair organized by the NBDB and other university presses of Manila and Kapampangan book publishers, an exhibit organized by the Ayala Foundation with the ADMU Fine Arts Program and the Capampangan Center for Culture and Arts. The Luzon Literatour ended with a writing/processing workshop conducted by the

Promoting Lanao’s indigenous literatures: IIT hosts NCCA’s Literatour in Mindanao

In situ: IPAG’s interpretation of Christine Godinez-Ortega’s poem “ Legend of Maria Christina Falls” performed at the NPC’s Agus 6 & 7

Dr. Steven Patrick Fernandez

High Chair and ADMU Fine Arts Program.

Literatour in Mindanao had four lectures of varying perspectives in approaching folklore and the darangen texts that shared the goal of promoting and celebrating the indigenous literatures of the Lanao area.

The darangen (song) is the epic shared by the Maranaos and the Maguindanaos. It is on the UNESCO list of Intangible Heritage for Humanity.

The forum lasted the entire morning and was an opportunity for students and academicians alike to take part in the discussion of the cultural development of our literatures and the methodology of transcreation.

The first speaker Sabanpan Yu shared about folklore as a means for human beings to interact with nature in her talk “Indigenous Literature and the Environment.” Yu further emphasized the need to be eco-critical in order to have a deeper awareness of the effects of human interference in the dynamics of nature and culture.

Sharing her manga illustrations of select darangen texts, second speaker Mikha Marohombsar Alawi talked about the process and struggles of recreating the Meranao epic in a visual form without sacrificing its heart and content, and why she felt the need to transcreate the darangen.

Dr. Ednairah Pambangan Esmail from MSU –Marawi, discussed the beauty of the darangen as repository of Maranao values and talked

about ways on how she adapted some episodes as instructional materials for Grade III pupils, in light of the Mother-tongue based education in the K-12 program.

She advocated the use of select texts from darangen to introduce good values and promote cultural identity among the Meranao youth. Esmail also took the opportunity to poke fun at her students who knew the plot and characters from Shakespeare’s plays but not from the darangen. Later, she presented to the Project director Godinez Ortega samples of the illustrated texts from the darangen.

The Artistic Director of the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG) and faculty member of the English Department, CASS Dr. Steven Patrick Fernandez was the last speaker for the day. He expressed his joy over the recognition of the term “transcreation” as a performance process as evidenced by the use of practitioners and scholars in various venues. Fernandez also presented the pedagogy he has expanded and developed for transcreation.

In the afternoon, the participants were treated to a performance by MSU-IIT’s resident theater company IPAG at the National Power Corporation’s Agus 6 and 7. IPAG recreated “The Legend of Maria Cristina Falls” based on the poem by Godinez Ortega.

To some participants, the IPAG’s performance proved enthralling and moving because it was back dropped by the timed-release of the Maria Cristina Falls. By CFGO with report from Jermae Benette Dollete, CASS

Gabi ng Sining: the cultural education of IIT’ans by Christine Godinez Ortega, OPI

Culture and the arts are integrated in human societies and as somebody said, music and poetry matter

in our lives because as humans, we have emotions.

The MSU-IIT has, for its part, acknowledged that a holistic development of the individual is part and parcel of its mission hence, the creation of its resident cultural groups to showcase the Institute’s talents and in the process, learn about Mindanao’s “cultural semiotics” and the country’s diverse traditions and heterogeneous creative expressions.

Aside from channeling the youth’s energies for a sense of aesthetics, the show helps develop the student’s discriminating taste amid the proliferation of inane entertainment from noontime TV shows.

The Gabi ng Sining that began during the Charter Day celebration in 2009 is the brainchild of the Cultural Development Office (CDO) Director Zayda O. Macarambon. It aimed at introducing to the IIT community especially the

freshmen, the Institute’s cultural groups that, at least, once a year, perform for free. The production has since grown alongside the Institute’s aim of becoming a leading academic institution in Mindanao.

According to Macarambon, the Gabi ng Sining began with a noble vision but has since been beset by many problems -- from a proposal for a themed production that could not, it seems, be realized; difficulties in putting together such a production with sub-standard lights and technical equipment; the lack of funding to support a challenging undertaking of about P95,000.00 to P120,000.00 per production; and, according to Macarambon, the lack of cooperation by some faculty members to the ‘cause’ of culturally-educating the youth.

Macarambon has stressed the importance of rehearsals and had asked for cooperation from the IIT community to allow students to rehearse and to be allowed to do make up work during their absences which the Administration supports by way of a Special Order.

You see, rehearsals, like revisions to any composition are a must towards quality performances. It instills discipline in the actor who must aim at perfection in his art. One can deduce that at this time in IIT’s journey towards becoming, the cultural landscape is still in its adolescent stage.

The recent Gabi ng Sining held on February 26, 2016 at the Gymnasium gathered a big crowd of students, faculty and staff and from the general community to watch the performances of the Institute cultural groups and independent, student groups: the Octava Choral Society; the Integrated Development School’s Ringkaran, the Echoes Band; the Kalimulan Cultural Dance Troupe; Dance Society; the MSU-IIT Cheerleading Team – Lions; the Kalilang Traditional Ensemble, and the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG).

Sheer verve and enthusiasm to entertain the crowd characterized this year’s Gabi ng Sining. The loosely-structured show opened with all the groups filling up stage space, their brief moves promising an entertaining evening, and, finally proceeding to the

Grand Finale

Page 12: Gazette (February 2016) - PDF

12 | Gazette

show proper we witnessed the lively singing of IDS students, the innovative dancing of the dance groups, the appeal of the Echoes Band, and the acrobatics of the Lions cheering team.

The show ended with the performances of the Kalilang Traditional Ensemble, with the impressive play on the kulintang and indigenous instruments and a much applauded display of deft hand movements balancing fans in the air by the resident onor.

What was admirable of the show was its highlight, the return to our traditions by way of the innovative, quick movements and rhythms, colorful visuals and sounds and neat choreography from the IPAG, Kalimulan and the Kalilang Traditional Ensemble after all that spirited prancing, jumping and leaps of a cheering squad and from modern dancers, the singing of native airs by young artists, and the overwrought, aerial ballet on a rope by a charming student promptly reminding this writer of Charles Darwin’s Origin of the Species by Natural Selection.

Levity aside, this year’s Gabi ng Sining could improve its future concept towards a themed production, raise the level of presentation that is less predictable, at the same time, appeal to a motley crowd whose occasional hoots and whistles were unnerving.

Another significance of Gabi ng Sining cannot be overemphasized in light of the Institute’s offering of a Culture and Arts program and the advent of ASEAN integration in December 2015.

One of the three pillars of the ASEAN is the Socio-Cultural Community to realize a humane society and to strengthen cultural identity among diverse, multi-ethnic groups. In this sense, IPAG Artistic Director, Dr. Steven Patrick C. Fernandez said that “we [IIT] must make a mark” in the process of knowing our cultural identity therefore loving our own, and promoting our creative expressions.

With the institutionalization of student cultural fees approved by the Board of Regents in March 2015, it is hoped that Gabi ng Sining will continue to be held for the IIT community among other co-curricular pursuits.

Representing the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) Sub Commission on the Arts, this writer’s message that evening was to encourage the young students to join cultural groups to draw their potential in creative expressions and most important, being able to work with different personalities for that total, inter-textual contexts of experiences.

Such dynamic allows the individual to become either a good follower or a future leader because ultimately, the person develops self-confidence and yes, humility as well, while performing before a live audience or, before that frightening dark space when the lights go off.

Shakespeare, the greatest dramatist of the millennium and beyond had said, “All the world’s a stage” from his famous play As You Like It. Learning, therefore, through the exits and entrances of local actors onstage and offstage might as well begin with MSU-IIT’s journey towards artistic maturity with Gabi ng Sining.

*The author is Secretary to the NCCA Sub Commission on the Arts and is Head of the NCCA National Literary Arts Committee. Her reviews on books, films and plays have been published in various publications since 1996.

Curriculum and its Students

Since nursing education today must keep pace with the global changes to ensure the continued delivery of quality and effective patient care instruction, the goal is to develop health programs that will meet the health needs of the region in particular and the country in general.

At present, CON is drafting its proposal for a graduate program, the Master of Science in Nursing with majors in maternal and child nursing, medical and surgical nursing, and psychiatric nursing. It is hoped that the proposed program will be approved after a series of consultation and evaluation processes with the members of the curriculum council from different levels.

To produce globally competitive health manpower in mind, the college has been very supportive of students’ academic, social, and personal growth. Students are sent to join leadership trainings and research programs, providing them the knowledge, skills, and experience in addressing issues of local, regional, national and international concerns.

Additionally, the college has started accepting students with SASE score below 70 and the challenge of transforming low performing students to high performing students has been accepted. Dean Jondonero believes that students can be trained with the right motivation. With the college’s nursing education, it is ensured that graduates of the program can work in educational, practice, and research settings.

K-12 Transition and ASEAN Integration

Preparation for the K-12 transition began in 2015. One of their preparations is the established faculty work plan in which select faculty members take graduate studies. In fact, in their faculty development program, Dean Jondonero is slated to take doctorate degree this year together with one other faculty member. Three faculty members sent out for a PhD are returning before 2016 ends. Dean Jondonero is cheerfully positive that the college achieves its goals set in 2020, especially in faculty development.

Significant change and innovation are needed for ASEAN integration. CON faculty members sent for paper presentations collaborate with the host university. Today, the CON has established partnerships with universities in Indonesia and Thailand, and the dean strongly hopes to increase the number of collaborations with educational institutions and healthcare organizations with other member countries of ASEAN.

With ASEAN integration fully implemented, Dean Jondonero hopes that MSU-IIT will have good relationships with universities of ASEAN nations in order to see smooth mobility of faculty and student exchange. He confidently believes that development of partnerships with a broad range of community organizations and providers can create mutual benefits and provide more learning opportunities for both faculty and students.

CON aspires for AACCUP Level III Accreditation status and to eventually be

recognized by CHED as a Center of Excellence (COE) for nursing education. The college believes that these certifications will help boost its image not only as a top performing school in licensure examinations but also its potential to continue delivering high-quality healthcare education, consequently, contributing to the realization of the Institute’s vision as a world-class institution.

CON over the next five years

With strong support from the administration and academic and community partners, CON looks forward to host an international conference. The college is positive that in over five years, there will be more faculty members who will have PhDs, and are prolific in research papers and publications.

When asked what one thing about CON he would like to change, Dean Jondonero replied, “…it’s the location of our space.”

Although content with their current site, Dean Jondonero and the faculty, staff, and students would appreciate it if the college has its own building. In their present site, and although they never complained because they see climbing four flights of stairs several times a day, every day, as a form of cardio-exercise, they still see this as an arduous activity.

But CON, as reflected by the work performance of its dean, faculty, and staff, nothing seems to stop them from rising to the top and, staying there, definitely.

“Mindanao is ideal for internationalizing its local government because it is at the crossroads,” so said Dr. Trevor Hogan, Research Director of Australia’s La Trobe University during his first visit to MSU-IIT.

Hogan introduced the programs and research thrusts of La Trobe University to a group of MSU-IIT’s Deans, Directors, Department Chairs and some faculty members during a luncheon-meeting held at the Boardroom on February 1, 2016.

Hogan talked about the 25 areas of discipline in humanities, the social sciences, science and technology in his university that was founded in 1967. He talked about the multi-cultural make up of his university with 25 nations represented within its sprawling campus. He emphasized the response of his university to many challenges of the faculty to engage with other disciplines and being cognizant of information technology integrating this in the academic setting.

Among the more significant aspects he shared with his audience was the indigenous strategy in education by introducing Trobe University freshmen to know about indigenous Australia and to learn about indigenous languages that provide much potential for research.

La Trobe University is among the top 400 universities in the world. It is located in Melbourne in the state of Victoria, Australia. In its official webpage, La Trobe is advertised as one of the elite universities in the world with “more than a third of subjects assessed in the latest QS World University Rankings.” as released in the UK in 2015.

Dr. Feliciano B. Alagao, Vice Chancellor for Planning & Development for his part introduced the guests to MSU-IIT’s academic and extension programs, research thrusts and other achievements of the Institute.

Her singing voice so impressed the composer Tarongoy that Amba was instantly offered to perform his songs so Amba traveled to Cebu City for a recording.

Her first musical album “Antolihaw” is already available in two versions (pop and classical style), and has the following songs: Sa Mahal Mong Kasingkasing, Antolihaw, Siya ug Ako sa Kangitngit, Kon Talikdan Mo, Ang Bugtong Damgo Ko, May Naghilak sa Langit, Dongari Ka Day, Kapunongan Sumbanan, Kinabuhing Banikanhon, and Amahan Namo.

During the interview, Amba wished for the support of local artists in reviving the local musical industry. She visited the OPI to promote her album which is on sale. Part of the proceeds will go to the Sendong Deus Caritas Village in Iligan City.
