While many Clemson students rushed home after finals to spend time with their friends and families, a group of 16 students did something different with the first week of winter break. These students, representing

traveled to the Dominican Republic to build a house for a family in need. The team, accompanied by two members of Clemson faculty, united with Cambiando Vidas, an organization whose Spanish name means “Changing Lives.” Cambiando Vidas pairs with groups from the U.S. to provide affordable, safe housing for families in the Dominican Republic. The team helped fund the build and joined the family and community to building the house in San Juan De La Maguana. Over the short span of one week, the team completed the house and made valuable connections with the family and their community. As the Cambiando Vidas website states, “By the end of the week-long build this unique mixing of concrete, people, and cultures reveals that people are more alike than different, and that a house is much more than a collection of concrete, metal, and wood.” For the past four years, Clemson Greek Life has been privileged enough to send teams to the Dominican Republic for this life changing experience with Cambiando Vidas. This is a tradition that we hope will continue to carry on in years to come.

Greek of the Month Order of Omega is pleased to announce that Arthur Throw-

er is our February Greek of the Month. Arthur is the president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) while being a brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and a member of Blue Key Honor Society. Arthur says he attributes his passion to the potential that is on our campus. “I saw organizations with pur-pose and value and I knew they’d give more value to my life,” said Arthur. He hopes to bring out the full potential of the NPHC council and all of Fraternity and Sorority Life. People often re-mark “Arthur’s passion for anything he does is contagious.”

When he has free time, Arthur has a love for mu-sic and anything creative. He says “I do a lot of busi-ness during the day and so I like to have as much cre-ativity [as I can] in my free time” Because of Arthur’s unprecedented passion for life and commitment to our Greek community, we are proud to name him Greek of the Month.

IFC Rush Returns to BowmanWith a well-run week of rush behind us, this spring semester looks very promising for the

IFC Fraternities and their new respective pledge classes. Spring 2014 IFC Recruitment was held January 12-17, beginning with Smokers on Bowman Field Sunday and Monday. The First In-vite Round followed on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Final Invite Round occurred Thursday. Approximately 180 academically eligible men participated in Spring Rush, with about 110 of them accepting bids from one of Clemson’s 22 fraternities that are overseen by the IFC. 140 bids were given out on the Friday the 17th, Bid Day. Following each fraternity’s bid day accep-tance ceremony, many held joint Rush Blowout celebrations to mark the end of Rush Week.

Students Prepare for NPHC Orientation This year’s Spring NPHC Orientation was held January 13 at 6:00 pm in the Lila Holmes Ballroom in Clemson House. The orientation included an overview of the organization’s history, presentations from each of the NPHC’s nine organizations, and a video entitled “Meet the Greeks.”

During a rotational segment, orientation participants were broken into groups and traveled around to each organization’s table. Participants learned more specific information about the presence of the organizations in the Clemson community and on campus. The orientation ended with a Q&A segment. During the segment, the NPHC Executive Board answered individual questions from prospective members.

The 2014 NPHC Orientation was an absolute success and provided hope and a sense of fulfillment for the future of the NPHC.

Greek Life Welcome President Clements

For the first time in 14 years, Clemson University is welcoming a new president to campus. President Jim Clem-ents began his term on January 1, 2014, just in time to sup-port his new school in Miami at the Discover Orange Bowl. Previously president of West Virginia University, Jim Clements and his family have strong ties to Clem-son University. His wife, Beth, has two brothers who graduated from Clemson University. Jim Cle-ments and Beth have four children: Tyler (21), twin sisters Hannah and Maggie (18), and Grace (14). Clements is very passionate about land grant universities, something that West Virginia Uni-versity and Clemson University have in common. In response to the student enthusiasm and wel-come the family has received from the Clemson Greek Community, Clements said, “We already feel right at home at Clemson. So many students have stopped me to say hello. I can understand why we have such a great reputa-tion as a friendly campus with happy, engaged students.”
