PROPOSAL

Project TitleWhat You See is Not What You Get

BackgroundWe experience this situation in our life almost everyday. People usually expect they will get something exactly like what they see as a result. Then, they end up being disappointed if the result is not what they expected. Things that we see in real life, there must be other meaning because everyone have different perception. It’s up to a person to interpret. People need to start looking at things from different point of view and be ready to see the truth.

Problem IdentificationPeople are easily attracted to things that are pretty and believe what they see no matter how much it is being manipulated. There are subliminal message on each of the subject that we see.

Page 3: FYP presentation

Ideation & ConceptFor the project; I would project a visual on a face/mannequin that will make user change interpretation after viewing from different distance and include audio at the end. User would be part of the installation.

Aim & Objectives1. To show how our brain have been manipulated by the image we seen.2. Experiment with the concept of seeing things from different distance.3 To show that there is always the other side of the story that people always miss to see at a different point of view.

MotivationI experience this in my daily life, I have to face with this problem. I want people to realize that this situation always happens. What if people let others manipulate them and not realizing it. We need our brain and eyes to figure out what the real meaning is. There are things that need our eyes to figure out what the real meaning is and to look at things from different point of view.

RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS

Understanding of "what you see is NOT what you get“What you see is not what you get is a statement that I'm pretty sure happens to most people in Malaysia. People have expectation on things and surroundings. They expect to get what they see. When the result or outcome is somehow different, it will cause people to feel disappointed.

IssueThings are made to attract attention. People easily attracted and will straight away believe what they see instead of trying to look at it from different point of view.

Survey

RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS

Survey

My study from this survey leads to conclusion that people easily believe what they see even though they have consider other facts. And the reason they believe is because of the visual that they saw. This means, visuals play a big role for a person to make decisions. It relates to visual perception.

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

Role of VisualFrom my analysis, visual plays a big role in people's perception. People believe what they want to believe. It's not that they believe things without any reason but sometimes, visual illusions can provide an impact into how the brain works. The first thing they see is not necessarily the real truth. Illusions of the visual seem to indicate that our mind does not always accurately represent the real thing. We need to view from different point of view.

Visual Perception Images- Ambiguous figure (multiple intrepretations)-Colour illusions (word written is different from the colour)- Depth illusions (plays with tone and merge the colours with surrounding)- Impossible figures (created with depth and shapes.)- Miscellaneous illusions (hipnotic)- Subjective contours (form of visual illusion where contours are perceived without a luminance or color change)- Hybrid images (cause interpretation change from viewing distance)

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

Causes of Visual IllusionThe eye plays an important role in visual illusions. From the science understanding, it is because of the lighting, colour, character and disposition of objects. also the structure and sensitiveness of retina towards colour and light.

It is definitely not easy to create a visual illusion. Some of them appears coincidently or unplanned. Therefore, there must be an understanding of how visual illusion works.

- The Influence of Angles- Depth and Distance- Brightness and Contrast- Colour (different shades of colour give depths)- Lighting Effects- Mirror Trick- Distortion in size and shape- Camouflage

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

Motion detectionI’ll be using webcam to detect when user come closer to the mannequin so that the video will start to play the sequence.

Webcam Zone TriggerThis software can be used with Adobe Flash. When the webcam triggered a motion, it will bring the action.

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

PROJECTION MAPPING

Instead of using screen to make user experience the change of interpretation, I will use projection mapping. So it will look more real if I project on a mannequin. User also will be able to see the changes through the visual more clearly.

3D projection mapping is really amazing that it has recently emerged as one of the coolest. Therefore it will be more interesting to create effects.

CONTEXTUAL STUDIES

Personal ContextFrom my experience in everyday life, the situation of what you see is not what you get always happen. I have my own perspective on things that I see. Visual illusions that I see motivate me to learn more about this topic.

Cultural ContextVisual is art (which is considered as cultural) is very important in our life. The role of visual is very wide. Visual influence people’s perception. It helps to make our brain make a conclusion of what we see.

Social ContextRelates to human behaviour that different people have different interpretation. I will produce visual that audience have to look at. one look that could represent more than one meaning. Therefore audience are going to interpret.

CONTENT DEVELOPMENT

Hybrid images

This kind of illusion change interpretation as a function of viewing distance. I am going to use this kind of illusion technique.

Make UpMake up is the issue that I am focusing for my content. Woman wears make up to look beautiful and glowing. But for man, they use make up to transform into woman. In other words, “drag queen”. Sometimes we cannot differentiate which is real woman. Because make up really can change someone’s face. Even drag queen can look prettier than woman.

So I will map a visual of drag queen that really looks like a woman and the visual will change to a man.

CONTENT DEVELOPMENT

This is sample of man that use make up to look like a woman.

CONTENT DEVELOPMENT

MethodFor the mannequin, I will project video on it. The video will show the changes from woman to a man. To show how make up can transform a man into woman.

CONTENT DEVELOPMENTUSER INTERACTION DIAGRAM

User will start to walk from a certain point of view towards the mannequin. There will be a visual on the mannequin.

When user go under the webcam, sensor will cause the video map on mannequin to start changing .

Then after the visual end, audio in a form of dialog will be played. Speaker will be placed next to the mannequin.

FINAL SYNOPSIS

We experience this situation in our life almost everyday. People usually expect they will get something exactly like what they see as a result. Then, they end up being disappointed if the result is not what they expected. That brings the concept of, “what you see is not what you get”. Things that we see in real life, there must be other meaning because everyone have different perception. The brain has been manipulated from what we have seen of. Therefore, people need to realize that they should be ready to see the other message

This is a real phenomenon. People don’t really consider other facts. Or maybe look at things on different perspective and think twice. According to a classic psychology study, at first sight people cannot help to believe whatever they see.

The poster shows that the real image and the image shown in the mirror are different. It is like showing the other message that you don’t expect to see. The idea of my installation based on this poster is to take a look at things in different point of view instead of believing it right away. There must be other message behind a subject. Start to interpret or look at things deeply and differently.
